The fact this one doesn’t have a chorus, and the beat is a ticking clock; it talks about writer’s block, impatience and agony, it just set the mood too perfectly for a come-up type of story/track.

The song's from the Soundtrack. He's rapping about the perspective of him writing rhymes, trying to get better as Rabbit from 8 Mile. This song is not about crazy bars, it's about his delivery and showing you the perspective of the character. Half past three is three thirty. He's talking about him thinking his rhymes are sucking and he needs to write better, but, the more he forces it, the worse they come ut and he questions why he puts himself through this and then that is why it ties into Jimmy and going to work to "Beat the Clock" and he remembers he does not want that life and that is why he puts himself through this pressure, that he actually does not even enjoy.

Could also be an anecdote to the Song 3 a.m. Cause he remembers to have read the clock at 1 a.m. then 2 a.m. and then at 3.30. So maybe he doesn't remember the time from 3 a.m. till 3.30 (cause if he remebers this time, then he would remember to have looked at the clock at 3 a.m.)

I just can't get over that some people still can't admit that he is simply the best rapper when looking at the great picture. He is simply so diverse that he combines 3 rappers in one (MM, Eminem and slim shady) to express the thoughts in his head. The greatest lyricist (is there one english word he hasn't in his vocabulary and the unreal capability to use them with countless metaphors and comparisons noone even thought about, put together in sick rhymes, best style (either pick one out of the hundreds or just the fact that he has hundreds is enough to make him stand out above any other rapper ), the best bars, countless of them in one track e.g. alfreds theme, the best battle rapper (none of the greats in the game want beef with Em) and one of the best storytellers (subjectively therefore only ONE of the best) not to mention that he holds the world record for fastest rap (Godzilla) or that he does all this shit for decades. One could go on forever. Every rap fan should objectively have no doubt that he is the best rapper because he simply masters everything that makes rap rap on a level that is above 99% of all others. For the remaining 1%, he is still one of the best. You don't have to like him or celebrate him, everyone has their own taste and that's not to be criticised in any way, but to have the goat debate is to make objective comparisons and separate yourself from personal preferences. Then there can only be one answer

    • @shepps-xs7dy

YESSSSS! I have asked for this one for a while. The storytelling on this is so good. He is talking about the process of writing his rhymes and what goes through his head and the battles with writers block and needing to produce. No chorus just flow. Killed it!
Next suggestion is one you MUST BE READY FOR, Lupe Fiasco - Put you on game. DO NOT ATTEMPT THIS IF YOU ARE NOT READY TO THINK. The flow, bars and perspective are open to interpretation and INCREDIBLE. If you do this song, you have been warned. Keep grinding young fellas 💪🏾 @cartierfamily

He was happy at the end of 8-Mile because he "found his voice". He won on stage. He knew he COULD flip an audience. He KNEW he could pursue rapping without feeling like he was spinning his wheels doing nothing. All he had to do was gain the confidence to get on stage and spit.... which he didn't think he had until he did it and won.
Yeah, he was going back to his "dull life", AT THE MOMENT.... But his DREAMS were still alive and he knew he could pursue them despite all the personal set-backs he already had to endure to get up on stage and win the battle.

if you continue to listen to his old songs, you will understand why he had such an big impact on such a mass of people. its not his lyrical wordplay (even though he is the G.O.A.T at it). It's his ability to paint a picture for the one who is listening. Doesnt matter if its funny, sad, angry or just motivational. He can take u on a journey only with his words AND can combine this with the absolute sickest cadence and flow and rhyme skills. And i think thats what made him the best rapper. And i also think thats what he is missing today a bit. He just focus to much on the rhyme itself and forgets a little bit about what made him so fucking good and relatable to all of us.

@@danielajayi9311 yeah i think the concept and the Idea of Revival was great. It was a great fucking Story He had to Tell and im pretty Sure If Had done it right it could be amongst His Other top Albums.. BUT the way He executed it was Just not good. WAY to Pop and the Beat choice was not good, the production Just wasnt good tbh. I mean its a Album where He has a Song with pink and pink has the biggest Part on it in HIS Album? I am a Eminem Stan, i am listening to him since i was a child but this Album Just wasnt it. (Still better than almost every Album of Other Rappers but still Bad for His Standards) But at this Moment u can only compare him to himself.
He still has Songs where He Shows He can do it but also a Lot of Songs are Just Misses. And thats sad because Back in the day He NEVER missed. For me the breaking Point in His career was Recovery. Before that every Album was a 10 out of 10 for me. But the way he was riding the beats before that and the flow and the everything was just INSANSE. But Then idk, for me at least ,He lost a Bit of His Touch. And i HATE the fast rapping lol :D Was cool for the first few times but now its annoying. i mean already proved that he is the best at doing it fast. idk why he still does it though. But at the end of the day he is in a position where he just does what he wants to do and its good for him. Still though i would give a lot of things just to hear him spazzing out like he used to do in the 2000's just with new ideas and content he has to offer now.

You're wack. Eminem is leagues above what he used to be. I was around & grew up on Em. I think it's you who forgets an artist cannot stay stagnant & he must evolve & push the boundaries of the art.. simple ass surface level storytelling is not a strongsuit of any artist, it's a preference. It's what the sheep like. That's why Eminem started rapping like tupac when he got with dre & stopped the infinite ish. Because the masses just want simplistic surface level ish. Its a simple blueprint used across most all music genres & it IS NOT what makes him good.

The clock strikes midnight, 1, 2 then half past 3. Now actually thinking about it didn't really make sense if you don't genuinely know. So he's making hourly references, but even without that it is assumed that hrs are referenced, dating back to non digital clocks. 1 hr has 60 minutes so half past would equal 30 min of that hr so 3:30 is half past 3. I’m still gonna keep requesting a Nas - “Rewind” reaction because that one deserves to be done. I think it would be fun to see if you guys could figure out the story from the actual beginning to end cuz he spits the story backwards in this track.
As far as D12 and Eminem’s - “My Band” would be a fun because the whole song is practically a conversation amongst each other be they rapping the conversation pretty much

@@samueld5418 it really is. I don’t think people realize how difficult it is to really tell a story backwards like he did and make it flow nicely. The creativity behind it was crazy, even some of the dialogue in the story he’s telling was backwards

"I'm gonna make you hate me because you ain't me."
Love that he turned it away from simply a consequence of becoming successful, instead making it sound like his goal is making everyone hate/envy him and being successful is simply a consequence of achieving that goal.

You guys are great! 1 2 and half past 3 is 3:30 am. midnight, 1am, 2am, 3:30am. I think he was just being creative with his rhymes. But he is up late working on his craft with writers block as someone else mentioned.

This song is from the 8 mile soundtrack and it is Eminem rapping as B Rabbit character (whose name in the movie is Jimmy Smith). Hence the line “Jimmy Smith ain’t a quitter”

he was happy at the end of 8 mile cause he gained the respect of the people that doubted him. and the last scene is supposed to imply that he's gonna go on to bigger and better things very soon. aka getting signed.

This song is off the 8 Mile soundtrack. His character's name is Jimmy Smith/B-Rabbit. This is the perspective from Jimmy Smith.
"...the clock stikes midnight, 1 - 2 then half past 3. This half ass rhyme..." referring the late nights he's up writing that the time flys by and its midnight then 1 AM then 2 AM then 3:30 AM (half past 3). He's still not happy with what he wrote. So he rips the page out the notebook and starts over.

Clock reference in the rap is something people often miss interpret. The clock strikes midnight, the 1am, 2am the half past 3am, meaning he's been writing for more than 3 hours trying to get the perfect lyrics in paper
