That 5Ton wrecker reminds me of when I entered the Military in 2005. I joined the MP's of the Mississippi National Guard. We had a mechanic SFC that wore a white rag around his head as if he was a Ninja. He slept in that truck, ate in it and nobody sat on it or drove it but him. Called it Bertha and had it painted on the hood of the truck. We tore up all kinds of trucks from Engines to shafts and he rolled in cursing and spitting tobacco. He fixed them or pulled them out. LP/OP's (observation / listening posts) in the middle of nowhere and then a tranny went out or started smelling. This video reminds me of NTC at Fort Irwin California with hills like Ft. Hunter Liggett and Camp Robinson. Drops, hills and curves. Love it folks.

Years ago a very windy and steep mountain road between two towns I lived in was completely reconstructed. During the process, the construction crews pulled out over 50 vehicles from the canyon, some with human remains in them. The ones with remains where vehicles that no one knew were down in the thick brush and solved the missing person cases. Each time a vehicle was discovered with remains in it, the site was shut down while the coroner was called out. Because there were so many vehicles being located, the sheriff department eventually kept a csi deputy on scene during operation hours so things could continue without shutting down the construction sites.

To keep from hanging up on rock faces, hook the vehicle in the middle. I know it sounds counter-intuitive but it works. And you should really REALLY operate your rig from the side away from the direction of tip. You don't want to be between the truck & the "over the side" point. Yeah. I've done all of this in years past.

I used to work for the Forest Service and run maintenance on all these roads. In about 2010, some punks tried to run our 45k lb excavator off the canyon road and down this very ravine. They walked it from the lower parking lot all the way up, tore some of the guard rail up with the thumb attachment, then tried to walk it off the cliff. Thankfully, they couldn't figure out how to lock the machine in motion without someone in it.

Build a heavy sledge with several anchor points for rigging and some hardened skids on the bottom to slide over rocks. Put an angle front and back on it so it will slide up and over large rocks. You could load it with equipment and slide it down the mountain then load the sledge with garbage and winch it back to the top.

Been there many times. There's easily over 100 cars, Jeeps, trucks, etc in there. Most just get covered over every few years and people toss off new garbage. Only a handful of people(I know 1 personally) have actually ever gone off of this. All the other cars are intentionally pushed off to get rid of(stolen or derelict)

I love what y'all are doing, I really do BUT I am a strong believer in safety first (as a business owner). I lived in Centralia, WA for many years an worked for AAA Star Repossession and Recovery. They taught me a good sum in my younger years. Having four lines down hill, 1 as a primary, 2 for a secondary (for the object you are recovering) and 3 for safety ( for you), and a secondary safety for you as well.. This way you dont lose your load an you dont lose yourself. Lead by example is my motto.. I would start lookin at that for future reference, my 12 year son wants to be a tow truck driver and apart of a recovery unit because of y'all. Hence the reasoning for my comment here today.

I've seen many similar crashed vehicles in my 60+ years of wandering our mountains, in nearly every canyon along the front. Used motor oil, batteries, tires, etc. need to be removed as all of the water from these mountains gets used multiple times, from agriculture to potable municipal water supplies via groundwater replenishment. Obviously, there's got to be a bunch of lead and brass there too, but only so much one can do. Great video and example!

Knew he was going over, had to call in a barge crane to get it back on it's wheels. Ah it was beautiful down there, on our way to Managua, Nicaragua, something to do with Noriega. Never made it, had a main steam leak when we were bottom blowing the boiler. Had to stay there for a month for repairs. Bummer for us, not the rest of the ship. We only got 2 days liberty, gotta stick with the boiler during repair. Hole snipes job, fun never ends, till ya gotta do steam and water sides. Have great tales about them job's, not enough space to tell of em. Maybe later, if you call for help from a guy that knows what a 24 and a carry on means.😮

I picture something similar to a log dolly. Either that or go out ahead of time drill anchors on either side of your drag path to give your self more points of advantage using snatch blocks.

This job your doing reminds me a recovery I did in eagle river, Alaska, took me over 4 hours to recover a Ford ranger 1/2 ton 4x4over the side of a street on mile high rd. The truck was more like 2 miles off the side, I wascusing a 85 GMC 1 ton dually with a Holms 480 split boom, that was a blast, I got it back on the road and in his garage before his dad got home, which his dad knew what the son did, I only charged his dad $600.00

With all the steep recoveries you guys do with vehicles and trash collection I am surprised you haven’t made a sled that you could hook up (maybe with big wheels and a hoist for lifting cars onto the sled) that would make it easier to get them uphill. Just a thought.

The old Maine loggers used a capstan winch with continual cable or chain miles long Come to think of it the modern guys logging in Washington state Alaska Oregon use some rig I forget the name of it They would be a asset to y’all. I bet they got some cheepy cheepy almost free ones kicking around. Thanks Guys one of best videos I have ever seen. Can l come play to

Great Job! a small video editing critique, The sound levels jump drastically between cuts. It makes watching difficult, as I have to turn the audio up for the non-musical montages, and then rapidly quiet the play back during the montages, as my son is sleeping in the room above me. And not waking him is paramount in my mind. But Watching you guys solve problems, while doing impactful charitable work is awesome!

Honestly, a beefed-up skyline yarder like they use in logging would be perfect for a job like that. Especially for sending some bins up and down to haul out the garbage and small bits.

Hey Dave, do you have enough cable to run from a spot up where the 5 ton is to an anchor point down and possibly across the canyon? At a manageable height, that you could hang a sheave on a cable that you could high line the vehicles up without so much drag. We used to high line drill pipe that way on oil rigs. It is a matter of having a long enough cable and an anchor point.

Heavy D you and your crew are AWESOME!! It is amazing what you guys do. A couple tips if you are open to them. Get some wooden jack plates for under those screw jacks. Turn the crane to the opposite you are jacking, try to lift something heavy where the truck tilts, screw down the jacks, put the weight back down. That will give you a bit more stability. Since i am seeing this so late, you will be able to use your blackhawk to airlift them out!!! Also on that, IF you wanted to, get a thick tarp material and make it into a pool, for lack of better words, then garbage could be loaded into it and you could lift it out with your helicopter. Maybe with that community volunteers would go load it and then when its full it could be lifted out and brought back empty. Some of these ideas could even be floated to the local authorities and maybe they would pay you for your time efforts and fuel costs. REGARDLESS you and your crew are true CLASS ACTS!!!!!
