I’d recommend you very much the short story “Midnight Mass” by Machado de Assis. It’s one of the best short stories by the greatest Brazilian author! Happy holidays, Eric! ♥️🎄

We also had our first snowfall on the first here in Kelowna, Canada. I love the wintertime for reading by the fireplace. I'm working on my second novel while the first is with my agent, and the winter has made it into book number two in a very vivid scene.

I recommend to read a beautiful English victorian novel "The Gadfly" by E.L. Voinich- a brilliant book which very few English people know, read or even heard of. And that's a pity, because the book is really excellent!

I've just started 'Winter Pasture' by Li Juan, and so far so good! Very wintery story following a family's winter migration in rural China. I would like to add the annual banquet to my tbr sounds good.

I'm excited to read "The Annual Banquet of the Gravedigger's Club" which is not yet out in America, at least not that I've been able to find. Thank you, Eric.

    Beautiful photos!
Thank you for showing such gorgeous editions! More to be added to my teetering piles of books to read!
When it snows I always think of Jules Verne’s Michel Strogoff. Haven’t read it in years, should dig it out and do so while it’s cold outside.

Love this even though I am in summery Cape Town. I hope you have a good festive season Keep warm and reading. I must reread Independent People I loved Black Narcissus and then had a Godden festival reading all her books.

I actually just got tickets to see Black Narcissus at the BFI as well! I had no idea it was based on a novel, I'll have to look into it. Thanks for sharing that.

I just loved Wolf Border❤ currently reading Independent People as am visiting Iceland in March. Sometimes hard going but excellent writing. Where I am it is hot and humid with natural disasters on every front, huge rain, a cyclone, fires, electricity outages and so on. A covering of snow would be very welcome. 🤭as always lots of lovely reading there.

I have a proof copy of This Plague of Souls and it is calling to me, I must say. I read The penguin Book of Christmas Stories last year and really enjoyed it. This year I have Nature Tales for Winter Nights (a truly gorgeous cover), the new British Library Women Writers Stories for Winter and Nights by the Fire and Tove Jansson’s story collection A Winter Book so I am ready for snowy days and frigid nights! Thanks for showing us your local park. How lovely!!!

@@EricKarlAnderson in the astronomical calendar, but it doesn't make sense for winter to start the day after Midwinter, the winter solstice when the days start getting lighter! for centuries people have followed the solar calendar because it matches up with nature and the solstices and equinoxes

Might I highly recommend Michelle Paver's "Dark Matter"and "Into Thin Air?" They are not similar except in the wonderful feeling that you are reading from inside a snow cave, and you really don't know what those shadows are. Both books have a lot of heart, trust me, despite their frightening storylines (in fact with the first one I wanted all the covers pulled up to my neck and all the lights on, and I am in my 60s). If I can find it (I am still living out of boxes) I think I want to re-read Peter Hoeg's "Smilla's Sense of Snow." Would LOVE to see the Black Narcissus movie, I adore Rumer Godden. My most unforgettable Christmas story is '"The Gift of the Magi."

Interesting that you like Cărtărescu so much :) I'm a Roumanian and even though he is very well-known in my country, he is not very liked as an author or a public figure. Seeing that you enjoy and recommend his work a few times, I might buy some of it and go in without bias. I hope it's worth it :) (I did try a small book of his called "Why We Love the Women", but I DNF it, it wasn't that great for me at the time, but I was in my early 20s, now being in my late 30's, maybe I'll see his work with different eyes). Those are good recommendations, thank you!

Why is Cărtărescu disliked? I'm so curious. Hope you give his books a try again.

@EricKarlAnderson Hi, this was more like 8-9 years ago and it was because of his endorsement for a political figure/ party, he was involved in politics, but on the polemic side of it, not him actually being a politician. I don't know if it's the case today because I stopped following all political events (and stopped watching tv). As an author, he seems to have pros and cons as well. Not everyone likes his style of writing. In a book of his, he literally wrote 1 single word for several pages, so on a more modern side, I don't know because I only heard of it, like I said didn't read much of his work.

@@EricKarlAnderson It is the fate of all writers, artists in general, who get involved in politics to attract a lot of negativity, irrespective of who they support - though I think this really was a mistake on his part, since the man he supported was not worth it. However, in literary circles and among readers Cărtărescu is not only well liked, he is considered a mega-writer, a very intelligent one and is revered - his books sell like hot cakes. I read a bit by him, I admire him and Nostalgia is on my list as well. Hope to read it soon, maybe this winter!

@@magdadumitru5731 Hi, I agree, but as a writer, he has a personal style that is not for everybody, unfortunately. He is more of an artist, he even admitted in an interview that he doesn't edit much (which is obvious) and he writes like a poet, but in prose. So more of a writer's writer, for the critics and literary juries, etc. Just my opinion and what I've read about him and his work.
