  • With a shortage of available locomotives, either due to failures, prior commitments or no time for gauging checks, LMS Black 5 4-6-0 no.44932 was roped in to take charge of June 16th's 'Royal Duchy'. Because of this the normal load of 9 (8+Support Coach) would have to be reduced as Black 5s are limited to 7 over the notorious South Devon Banks. RTC must have been feeling confident though as the load had been reduced to 8, one coach over the Black 5s limit! This would provide a serious challenge for the crew over Dainton, Rattery and Hemerdon. The weather would also play a part in how well she would do, as in a contrast to last week's sunshine and warmth we had cloud and rain.
    Our first port of call for the day would be at the little car park on the final approach to Whiteball Tunnel as 44932 climbs up Wellington Bank, it would've been the field just before this but the farmer had his cows in there! The 5 is seen going very well as she storms through the rain and enters Whiteball Tunnel. Our next shot brings us to the top of Dainton Tunnel, this is where things start to get interesting. Even more so as she would have a standing start from Newton Abbot after being held by a late running Voyager. It was touch and go at the top but Ray Churchill's excellent driving shines through and she makes it over the summit in glorious style.
    Our next location would be on the 1 in 78 climb out of St Germans, although a combination of a late get away from Dainton and 44932 having a shortened stop at Plymouth meant we got there with less than two minutes to spare. Although we didn't get as far as my planned location which was into the next field seen through the trees. I didn't even have time to setup properly so just had to lean my tripod against the nearest fence post and hope for the best. At least I got a shot though, right?
    The obvious choice for the first return shot was on the bridge at the top of Hemerdon Bank. There didn't seem to be many people there for it, that is until ten minutes before she was due when every man and his dog showed up! 44932 is seen giving an almighty bark as she slogs up the final stretch of the 2.5 mile long 1 in 42 climb, it was truly amazing considering the load was over her limit! The final shot of the day saw us just outside of Stoke Cannon, the last time I was here was back in March for 60163 'Tornado', and it was a hell of a lot darker then! 44932 is seen cruising along nicely, catching the last of what little light there was poking through the clouds. A nice shot to end what had been a lovely day's filming.
    Filmed on a Panasonic HDC-HS900 with Pro Sound L92AA and Panasonic VW-VM2SE (St Germans shot only).
    Enjoy.

    Thank you very much indeed :) It really was some fantastic driving to get a Black 5 up the Devon Banks with 8 on. The sound once she was right on top of us at Hemerdon is probably the best I've heard all year!

    Brilliantly filmed. Brilliant crew of her. I live in Newcastle Australia and this loco would've done well. And the person follows the train around. A big 👍 up.

    Lovely clips Kris. Unfortunately I had to miss this one so your video gives a real flavour of 44932s run. Keith

    Thanks for posting your amazing compilation of videos of the Duchy with 44932.
    I was on the charter with my family and we were so impressed with Mr. Chruchill's driving skills, especially to get up Dainton from a standing start at Newton Abbott, I had to shake his hand when we arrived in Par. I'm sure he breathed a sigh of relief when Dainton Tunnel appeared.

    Thanks very much :) It certainly was quite a feat to get a Black 5 up Dainton with 8 on, and from a standing start away from Newton Abbott as well! Well done to Mr Churchill!

    Thanks very much John :) She did very well considering she was over loaded! Mr Churchill's excellent driving certainly helped when it came to getting her over Dainton, even more impressive when you consider she had a standing start from Newton Abbott!

    Hi, I met you at Dainton, which was nice. Even if you didn't manage to untangle your jacket from the fence in one piece it was worth it to capture such a great video, both in subject and expertise. A really brilliant series of filming. No doubt our paths will hopefully cross again. Merv.

    This may sound weird, but sometimes I'm happy when engines need repairs because it means you occasionally get to see locos that don't normally come down south. :)

    She really did do well considering she was one over the limit for a 5, I have heard she's a bit more powerful the most Black 5s though, something to do with the superheating I believe. Just refreshed my memory on the 45407 clip, now that really was a slog! Thanks for watching and commenting Andrei :)

    • @Rosie6857
      @Rosie6857 6 лет назад

      It does seem a good 'un but it can't be superheating, which could make it a little more economical but not more powerful. Probably undersized wheels ( they can wear down to 5' 9") or re-bored cylinders (half an inch over or more). The wheels of a Castle were allowed to be down to 6 ft 4 7/8 in from the nominal 6' 8½" provided there was enough metal left on the flanges.

    Excellent performance. It does seem to be capable of handling some impressive loads, that loco. Great sound acceleratring over the top at Hemerdon. There's another video of 45407 really slogging on Hemerdon with 7 on a few years back, and this was much quicker.

    Many thanks for sharing , much appreciated. Just goes to show what a fantastic job the Castles and Kings did. I do realise the Black 5 was roped in because of failures and it made an impressive job of it. I wonder if a Hall might have made it look any different? Many thanks once again.

    • @Rosie6857
      @Rosie6857 9 лет назад +1

      LuckyTrucker1 A Hall is slightly better for this kind of slogging because of its higher tractive effort. The boiler is about the same. All trains in steam days stopped at Newton Abbott and only really piled it on once past Aller Junction. The 8-load was the maximum for a Hall, 9 for a Castle and 11 for a King. My desktop on this machine is a photo I took aged 16 (13 Aug 1959) in the pouring rain of a Modified Hall (7921) taking 8 up. No slipping, and loud! It was routine but that takes nothing away from 44932's efforts, especially the 8 up Hemerdon.

    Better than any equivalent Hall can do

    • @Rosie6857
      @Rosie6857 4 года назад

      Rubbish. I have personally seen a Hall take 8 unassisted up Dainton in great style. (13th Aug 1959). It was routine. I'm not saying the Black 5 is no good, far from it, but a Hall has the edge at low speed, having a higher tractive effort and an equally good boiler.
