70000 Britannia Stomps Over Tigley & Hemerdon - Royal Duchy - 2015

  • To say this year's Royal Duchy trains have been a disappointment, would be a major understatement, after the two previous tours ended in failure. For the final Duchy, we would see Britannia head over the heavily graded Devon Banks, where the Class 7 puts on a sturdy performance with a superb soundtrack up Hemerdon Bank.
    The day starts off at Totnes, where the Brit is seen flying round the bend, with it's safety valves blowing as it prepares to hit the bottom of the bank, on it's way up to Tigley & Rattery. A few miles up the line, we see 70000 digging in hard as it approaches Tigley, unfortunately a HST temporarily gatecrashed the approach shot.
    For our third location we head to Devonport Station where the loco is seen topping the 1/59 section out of Plymouth station. For the start of the return leg we chose Hemerdon Bank & Hemerdon sidings, where the packed out bridge, witnessed an ear deafening climb of the 1/42 Hemerdon Bank, with some lovely evening lighting. The sound of the Brit, continued towards Hemerdon Sidings where the loco can be heard quickly accelerating on the lighter grades which in turn caused a tasty slip. The lighting was difficult at this location so I had to bump up the contrast so it's a bit bright in some areas, so apologies for that.
    We finish off the tour with a couple of night shots as 70000 is firstly seen storming it's way through Tiverton Parkway on it's way up to Whiteball & Taunton. With a scheduled stop at Taunton, we headed to Bridgwater, where we capture our final shot of the tour sweeping through the station.
    A top notch performance from the Brit and great to see everthing run so smoothly. I hope you enjoy the coverage.

    For me this engine was " it " !
    Huge, powerful, frightening ( I was fourteen ) beautiful and representative of the very ultimate of British Railways post nationalisation engineering. Saw it and many of its class and loved them.
    Closely followed by the 9f's.
    Lovely video, thank you.

      +Sid Parker Sid, I'm glad you enjoyed the video. The Brit class is a favourite of mine. I can't really comprehend what it would of been like back in the day, seeing these locos day in & day out ! Regards, Liam

      +acw71000 Very much in top form is Britannia. A shame Ollie is not running at the moment, steam tours would be in a much stronger position with two Brits to call on.

    I love the shot of it thundering thru Totnes at 65mph. Brings back memories of my steam days as a fireman on the G W R.

      I would of preferred no blowing off to be honest, as it masks the the sound of the loco working well, but at least the loco was ready for it's gruelling climb.

    I live in ex GWR territory in Carmarthenshire. I used to love going to my local station, buying a platform ticket (those were the days and watching the trains go by. A fair bit of shunting from the local foundry took place through the station at times and that was always enjoyable to a little lad. Occasionally the Western engines were joined by a BR standard class and I remember at least once seeing a Britannia go through on passenger work. I didn't like it. Top heavy looking and untidy I thought, compared to the Halls, Manors and Castles. I also remember jumping out of my skin when the safety valves popped while it was taking on water from the column at the end of the platform. Despite my aesthetic objections to them though, they did perform well with the lousy post war coal they were given. But I was always loyal to the Western engines.

    I do love Britannia and her sister Angry Ollie. It's a pity the two have never double-headed together. It would be good to see the two together on one train, if it's at all possible.

    If you want the job done, put a Brit on it. It really says something, and not something complimentary, about BR's methods of crew training in the 50s that the Brits got such a bad name among Western Region crews, doesn't it.

    • @MarshSteamVideosTM
      @MarshSteamVideosTM  8 лет назад

      +AndreiTupolev A class 7 loco, performing like a class 8. Always a good performer.

    • @markturner4219
      @markturner4219 8 лет назад

      +AndreiTupolev Speaking as the son of a GWR driver I can assure you it was nothing to do with driver training. A top link express driver driving long shifts on steam trains every working day of his life was far better trained than the very excellent crews that work specials today. The Brits didn't have a bad name on the WR, they just didn't offer anything that the castles and kings already there couldn't already do and as supplied were not as economical on fuel or as sure footed on the hilly routes. They were removed from london and Plymouth as surplus to requirements and stayed for some time at cardiff where my father drove them for many years on the relatively easily graded route from south wales to london. People forget that castles were still being built into the 1950's so there were plenty of new and also upgraded castles available. the brits were much more needed elsewhere such as on the East Anglian routes out of Norwich, and also as emergency back ups on the southern while many of the bullied pacifics were 'grounded' for safety checks.

      +Mark Turner it also didn't help that they were left hand drive engines on a right hand signalled railway when travelling at speed.
