Hey this is great, I've been having so much trouble trying to find a video explaining all the parts I need. I was wondering if you could answer my question- I have a stove/range that runs on propane as well as a stackable dryer that heats with propane. I was looking for the appropriate regulator to fit to my propane tank, would this regulator set-up work for both types of appliances?
Missing is his hard line (which is steel) which usually comes through the wall and usually has a sediment trap for big propane cans and the inside shut-off knob so you can shut off the gas and clean behind the stove the regulator is supposed to be hooked to the hard line outside the house with a piece of copper tubing to the regulator this regulator they are using is to small along with the can a 100lb or a 200-250 lb can is advised for keeping pressure constant so all burner can be used not just one like shown he says hack and that’s what he did hack it!

Not a bad video just procedure of how he ran the yellow flex connectors through the exterior wall that will fail inspection Flex connectors are intended to be used from the on/ off gas ball valve to the Appliance not intended to be ran as gas piping.
Great video, Guess you could use a camp stove, also I would be tempted to put the propane tank inside, so you could turn the valve OFF when you are not using it

How did that yellow hose hold up? It’s made for low pressure NG but I wonder if with the regulator dropped it enough so there’s no need to replace it with the more expensive LP line

When to lowes today. Picked up a old stove earlier. To get part for conversion. And dipshit there tried telling me my stove was to old and it can't be done. Mind you I've done it years ago at my old house when I bought it.

How well has the installation held up over time? I'm looking to do the same type of simple install. Did you end up covering the regulator on the outside of the house to protect from weather?
I did cover it i purchase a plastic storage bin at home depot so it looks very nice from the outside and cut a hole in the back of the storage bin and keep a spare tank in it as well
Coupler is SOOOOO important. You cannot just connect a propane tank to it without the adapter or you can burn the stove up and likely the house down in an uncontrolled fire or close to it. One the adapter is on - you're good to go. Adapter is usually about $6 to $25 depending on where you buy. Works for Wolf commercial stoves too.

Helpful but can u explain the part name or size I have same Maytag stoves I have find every where the hose can fit inside male part or hose can female side can fit in but I didn’t get but I might still in search if u can help explain the part type that’s much much helpful after this comment I m going to find on another store which is 8-9 for today just for that hose 😅

So you needed a fitting to get the yellow hose attached to the regulator on the tank end. I think I have the same size yellow hose with 1/2" inner diameter on end and the fitting reduces to 3/8" that screws directly into the regulator. Is that what you have?

There are so many parts can you be more specific as to what dept maybe barbecue or appliance perhaps a part number. I have been in home Depot and Im trying to just get connection adapter for a gas to lo conversion. I have a Maytag range mgr4552bdb that uses a silver gas flex line and simply want to connect it to a smaller 19lb propane tank. I also would like to know if the flex gas line needs to be left out of the equation because it's not going to be gas anymore.

Hi. Thanks for the video. Wondering how big our stove is and is it just grill top or oven too? Looking at hooking up a propane grill/oven, 30 inch standard stove, and wondering if I can do that with a bigger tank (say a 100 gallon one) or if that won't work. Like you, we can't get refill on a big standalone tank so will have to run into town to fill up.
Georgie Smith my stove is about 24in worked no problem. i don't see any issues with a bigger tank or maybe daisy chaining some 30 gallons together.
You might want to check with industry standards & safety codes. There are a few things wrong here. You should use a solid black iron through the wall or shield the flexible line from friction & abrasion. The line outside should have a protective covering. The entire line should be grounded.
You're most likely correct. And if propane companies would actually sell small amounts of propane to us or contractors did not charge thousands and thousands of dollars to do simple jobs, we wouldn't be fumbling through these DIY projects and making mistakes like this. Literally no one in the propane industry will do business with homeowners who only want lp for 1 appliance. No one.

Can you use a similar set up for a ventless propane log set for a fireplace? I'm looking to convert a wood burning fireplace to propane using two 30lb tanks, like an RV setup and don't know if that yellow line will work in the fireplace (looks like it would melt!)
I have a Ventless Propane Log Set as well and they did run a yellow line, so yes this will work, All the heat goes up, infact i have a plastic Remote control box under the fire so i can turn the fire on or off with a wireless remote.

You can use the yellow Flex connector you just can't put it through a wall. the yellow Flex connector is designed to go from the gas ball valve to the Appliance. it's not made to run for a long distance example connecting them together will not pass code. that's strictly from the gas ball valve to the Appliance

Some important code violations that could be catastrophic. The yellow line should never be run through a wall or outside. Also, what you called compression fittings are actually flare fittings. Only specific type of compression fittings with the correct tubing can be used sawfly.

There is a regulator on the stove top that came with it (it has the spring that gets flipped depending on whether you are using propane or natural gas. Do I use that regulator AND the one at the grill tank?
Correct best to use both.
The cap on the regulator can screw off and I will be a spring in there on some regulators with the cap there is a plastic piece that you have to flip so the bigger end goes on the spring pressure that's for LP

You don't list the parts (adapters) you used, which is probably the most important part of the equation. I recently did the standard switch from NG to LP that most gas ranges are set to accommodate (changing out orifices and switching the appliance regulator from Natural Gas to Propane), but no one at Home Depot, Lowe's, Ace, etc. seems to be able to tell me how to get from the Propane Tank to the existing Natural Gas hose that attaches to the cook top range. I was thinking this would be the easiest part, but it seems to be the step causing the most problems. It's just this: what goes between the Propane Tank regulator and the standard yellow hose flare fitting? In the video it looks like you found a single, compact adapter, but I can't find that piece for the life of me!
+Daniel Beahm I picked up a kit at Lowes that was a standard Gas Stove connection Kit, it had a bunch of different adapters then picked up the Regulator in the same store but a different section of the Store. +Review Outlaw Thanks for the response! Ace, Home Depot, Lowe's... they all told me this was the weirdest thing they'd ever heard of and I'd need to go to a specialty Propane supplier. Idiots. It's very simple. The main component (the adapter I needed the name of) is actually a 3/8" FP (flare pipe) to 1/2" MIP (what's on the stove) adapter. Every grill sold these days has a regulator that screws to the tank, and a hose that screws into the grill (you can buy this regulator/hose combo separately at all the big box stores). The end of that hose has a 3/8" FP fitting. Thus, with the adapter you can screw the hose directly into your stove (connecting it directly to a 20# tank). A couple people have asked, so I'll mention this... the reason you want to use a regulator on the tank in ADDITION to the regulator on your stove is that the stove regulator is just making sure a consistent flow of fuel is entering your stove (the appropriate amount of either NG or LP, depending upon which way the regulator is set up). The regulator on your tank is changing the pressure from High Pressure (out of the tank) to a lower pressure, thus you need BOTH regulators. Hope this helps others, and thanks again for your video!

That part is incorrect that yellow Flex connector is not designed to penetrate through a wall expecially exterior walls that should have been hard pipe. so hard time going through the wall into the house then you will need to install a gas valve before hooking up to your Appliance. ITS technically always supposed to be pipe, gas valve, then the regulator. That yellow Flex connector is intended only to go from the gas valve on off to the Appliance. it's not intended to be ran as gas line directly this video is shown in correct way hooking this Appliance please do not follow this procedure thank you

All you change is one piece in the main line.
This is the same for stoves, water heater, and drier.
Yeah new stoves are different.. my stupid stove had 7 orfices that had to be changed as it came set for NG and it came with the instructions and orfices for LP
Even my ventless heater has 2 different orfices depending on if NG or LP

Just ot be clear, this stove was already set up for LP right? Because you can't just plug in LP to a natural gas stove. The manufacturers typically have conversion kits to change out various parts to make it compatible.
But thanks again for posting. I want to hook my new range up outside in my garage before moving it inside so I can do the chemical burn off prior to installing it. But since I don't have a LP connection in my garage, I needed to know if (and how) I can use a 5 gal propane tank.
My stove came with the parts to convert over to LP but yes you are correct you need to covert it, Good idea to test outside just in case! reach out to the Stover manufacture and see what they recommend for me it was in my manual, best of luck!
Thanks for that. That's exactly what i was planning to do, but my propane supplier told me it's illegal. (I'm in New York state.) Is this true, or is my supplier trying to con me into renting a tank when I don't want or need one?

I'm NOT a code-knowledgeable guy, but I believe it should be through-wall in black iron pipe. There may be other newer options (CSST??) that I'm not at all up on. It is difficult to get good info on how to do it b/c they all want you to use a licensed contractor. Why is electricity so easy and gas/propane so difficult?!
+George Soulier I agree it is a bit silly since the fact it's pretty much a grill setup with some adapters and its inside instead of outside. I would not call a contractor to setup a grill so why call one to setup a oven. I do have that yellow flex tubing going outside at my home from a fireplace that a licensed contractor setup so it should be ok.

What about the regulator that is in the back of the stove? The one that you remove and flip over to use LP instead of Natural gas.
Depending on your stove it might be a slightly different setup than mine but yes you might need to adjust the regulator depending on what it is currently setup for.
But if there's a regulator in the stove that's switched to be for LP gas do I need an external regulator?
Yes you do.
Yes for LP you should have a red regulator at the propane tank and that regulator well regulated to 10 psi. A man before your Appliance you will have to have a gas ball valve and also another regulator commonly used maxitrol to regulate it to11 inches water column. If you have too much pressure going to your Appliance you will blow the gas valve so make sure your regulated to what the appliance calls for which 4 LP is usually 11 inches water column.
Richard Long u have to use a twin stage witch is brown gray or silver witch will have 2 vents on them ... red is only if u are putting a second stage not 2 stage but second stage at your house witch will take the 10psi down to 11wc for your stoves and other appliances

+Noe Gonzalez the flame is normal for this propane, and i use it for just breakfast so i get 2-3 weeks out of it.
Define seems kind of small with the gas not all the way on high then you need to adjust the regulator you can take the cap off the regulator turn it clockwise only twice then turn your stove back on and check your Flame . then go from there on adjusting your regulator whether you want your flame bigger or smaller.
I have been using a small tank, too. Hooked it up where my 100# tank used to be - used the old regulator and pigtail and it works great! 1 meal a day lasts me 3 - 4 MONTHS yes you read that right, MONTHS! Best way to go if you don't cook a lot and do not use propane for any other purpose.

Yellow hookup hose is not rated for penetration through an exterior wall. You need to use rigid pipe there. Otherwise you have a building code violation and your insurance company will not be pleased.

If you have a copper gas line coming out of the house, is this the same as the compression fitting on the stove? What adapter do you need?
I'm not sure I would go to a Local Hardware store and show them a picture and see if they can help they also sell Adapter bags with a bunch of different Adapters and converts that will do the trick for you.
Wait so , is this procedure safe to follow after all or are the people in the comments that say the yellow hose shouldn't be used the way it is being used in the video right? Because I've been having a hard time finding everything and this is the only video that actually has the materials I have currently. The only thing I need to know is if this is safe and I can do it? Well messing around with Gas is never really safe, I would highly recommend getting it professionally installed, This is just a quick video showing how I did it, you might have a different setup and best to have a Pro set it up if you are uncomfortable. This setup has been working fine for the last 4 years for me.
I too had a hard time finding anybody who could even understand simple explanation of what I wanted to do. This video definitely on the money however it is best for a pro, nevertheless sometimes even the pros are in conflict. Motives...lures for a permanent big tank propane install for home....nonono kickbacks for playing the I don't know game....nonono.....

The little regulator that's in the appliance is definitely not enough to handle the pressure coming from the tank that's why it's important that you regulate outside of the tank to knock it down to 10 psi Post-Standard LP regulators are red or they have dual regulators which is 2 and 1 to save space . it is very important to remember to regulate properly because if you don't your Appliance gas valve will blow and won't be no good. Most LP appliances call for 11-14 inch water column on the inlet I believe natural gas is 8 inch water column

Seems you have some good info and I'd really like to hear your thoughts on soft copper lines going into my log cabin to hook up to a propane log FP. Seems most indoor propane "fireplaces" are requiring 100LB tanks but I can no longer huff that size tank.
Most say to use a blue flame wall heater which lets you use smaller (40, 30 & even 20LB ) tanks. But I really want a propane log fireplace. Most folks say you have to have the pressure of a 100LB tank which you don't get w/a smaller tank. Can a regulator give you the pressure of a 100LB tank? Or is there something else that'll fix it to be dependable & safe? Would really appreciate any help in this matter. Thx!
@@PANDAMANImpressions depending on state you live, soft copper may or may not be legal and depend on how long in feet the run is. Here where I live. Soft copper is permitted to run 10 ft and no more!!! So as long as tank is outside the wall, and within 10 ft of the appliance, you can run it. Soft copper is very fine product stood test of time over 40 yrs now. Black iron is also used widespread as a longer run that is buried. Most houses here use soft copper to the wall and then convert to the newer style yellow flex line from there to appliance. As far as volume, pressure and regulator, gas is gas. You can absolutely run a fireplace on a 20 lb bbq tank!!!!! My neighbor did it for the 1st year he built his new house!!! The propane company had issues with getting tank and truck delivery due to his lay of land and various trees in the way also wet winter time so he just hooked a small tank and it ran just fine. But be aware, you will be changing tanks more often...duh....smaller tank means it will run out more often. Go figure lol. Other than that, theres no difference. Now to the regulator, the fireplace you buy will have the regulator either with it in the packaging or will have a regulator size suggestion listed in the manual. You can either buy from them or generic regulator for cheaper as long as it falls within scope of the factory recommendation. Good luck.
Just use dish soap with some water in a spray bottle to test for leaks.
NOT SUPPOSED TO USE TEFLON TAPE AT ALL ON GAS PIPE FITTINGS
If it isn't a compression fitting I would use the Teflon tape to insure no leaks. Compression fitting does not need Teflon tape.
Pipe dope... most are rated for use on propane or natural gas connections... and yes no tape or dope on comp fittings.. but I'm sure everyone knows that.....

You can it won't hurt anything, it's not required as its a compression fitting, just make sure you have no leaks
It's because for some reason I connect everything just like the video but it won't work. the only difference is that I am using a different connector for the tank.

What typ of regulator you using?I want to run 40 lb tank for 5 burner cook top, and thought you need a two stage regulator.
He used a single stage grill regulator which does obviously work but your insurance company won't like it. The purpose of a two stage regulator is for it to have a built in fail safe in the event the regulator fails "open" which would expose your propane appliance to tank pressure which can be up to 140 psi instead of the much lower pressure it is designed to use. The potential is there for the appliance to fail, or even the delivery hose because it was never meant for that level of pressure.
know doubt, safety is everything, with out it there can be injury and possible death always check the code for you area...i'm somewhat concerned about the the non solid pipe going inside the wall..your doing good but i'd change that for sure.

I want to dry some meat. I was thinking of buying a used stove and connect it to a gas in my backyard to dry meat. I don't want to use the he natural gas line. It will cost a lot.
I'm not sure how long it takes to try dry mean, i say you would get 4-6 hours of running the stove Straight before you would need to switch tanks.

The issue i had with the video is that you showed "That you can hookup a 20# LP tank to an appliance!". No "How to connect a 20# LP tank to an appliance". You left out all the information on what parts you'll need, where to get them and what sizes you may need. And then show how you did it step by step.

You are also required to have a shut off valve within 6 ' of the stove or any appliance. You did not attach the hose to the wall or studs. You didn't pressure test the system. This video is a thumbs down.

C Sanch I picked it up at Lowe's I'm not sure if it's name if you bring all of your adapters to the store you should be able to get it working
Does the propane work to heat the oven as well as the stove top?
I would think it does. I just purchased a propane RV stove and it uses the same propane supply for both the oven and the stovetop.
