I'm a huge fountain pen collector. I have about 60 pens, some costing upwards of $600. I was never interested in any pen that wasn't a fountain pen. However, I got into Retro 51 Rollerballs recently and the rest is history. I already have 14. Some rare ones, some common. I've fallen for Retro 51 HARD, and I don't plan on stopping anytime soon. Let me very clearly state something: I am a collector, through-and-through. I fit the definition "collector" so well that, "if you open the dictionary to 'Collector', you'll see a picture of me." Retro 51 Rollerballs are the PERFECT pens to start collecting. They have so many different designs, they have limited editions, and to top it all off, they are great pens, and more versatile than fountain pens.
A pen is a tool. A hammer is only used for nails; the same applies to fountain pens. You can't use a fountain pen for everything. "Sometimes you need a saw, not a hammer." In this analogy, the Retro 51 is a Leatherman, or "multitool".
Don't get me wrong, I will never stop collecting fountain pens, but now I have a new type of pen to start collecting as well: Retro 1951 Rollerballs! I can't recommend them enough.
When you did the close-up of the pens, I wondered why Brian was wearing nail polish! 🤣
Ha! There's older videos with our videographer doing the B-roll with long nails, nail polish, wedding rings, etc and people are so confused why Brian's hands look like that... - Colin
That’s so funny! For a brief second my brain wondered when Brian started wearing nail polish. LOL! Im glad I’m not the only one who went there.
I was going to say that I liked Brian’s manicure! Haha!
I just was going to type the same thing. Guess we are seeing a new side of Brian! 💅
Loved this show-and-tell. Thanks, Eric!
Thank you, Brian!🚒
Thank you, Brian and Eric. I hope the weather does not harm you and yours.
Fantastic choice of Retros to start up you collection Eric. I hope everyone stays safe at Goulet and all along the East Coast.
I know it's more expensive/time consuming to use b-roll footage but it makes the video so much smoother.
At This year's Atlanta Pen Show, I participated in the informal focus group Brian and Colin had regarding whether Goulet should carry Retro 51. I hate to be the kind of guy who says "I told you so," but I TOLD YOU SO!
I kept expecting Eric to slip that Dynasty into his pen case as Brian kept talking. 😄
How fun!! I think I need a Retro 51 roller ball now... 😀
Thanks for this overview, I can see some folks getting these Retro's as Christmas gifts.
BTW please stay safe.
Be sure to get Rachel some floaties and a tether, she's way to tiny for high water and wind. Stay safe. Thanks for another great video.
I gasped when Eric said “I traded the Dark Lilac” lol I want a Dark Lilac so bad 😭
24-25 August 1932: Amelia Earhart flew her red Lockheed Model 5B Vega, NR-7952, across America stopping in many cities along the way. That is why the pen is red and why it has the NAA number NR-7952 on it.
I have my Retro 51 Tornado Lincoln EXT, and I really do love the way it looks. I am curious to see if you guys will eventually have some of their fountain pens, and what they are.
Good luck with everything, and stay safe.
When you first showed the P51 the months ago, i thought it was green, and i REALLY wanted it.... but then when you announced you were carrying them, it looked more neutral....
Brian, I hope everybody will be safe from the upcoming hurricane at your area. Our country, the Philippines, will also have a tropical hurricane (called typhoon) to hit us today covering large area of the Luzon island. I pray everybody will be safe.
So what's the deal with rollerballs? are they refillable? can you use fountain pen ink in them? Now that you're carrying these can we get a rundown on how they work? Rollerball 101? :)
This is our first major leap into rollerballs, not sure we will do more brands beyond Retro 51 (also seeing how they do through the holiday season). That said, they don't use fountain pen ink but these refills (www.gouletpens.com/collections/retro-51-rollerball-refills ) I don't think you can refill those beyond just buying another one. - Colin
Yes there are refills. The tip screws off to replace the cartridge. Be careful not to loose the spring located in the tip. That is all there is to it. Hope this helps.
Greetings!
Thank you for all you do to help us folks who suffer from the fountain pen virus!
Could you please identify the pen case Eric has? It is exactly what I've been looking for!
Thank you!
I think it's a generic product from china so it doesn't really have specific name, but if you're interested, White Glove Reviews did a review on it (same case but brown)
These pens are really nice. I really do like the Buzz, I may have to get one. I count myself very lucky to have gotten a Dynasty. I didn't know about the wrapping vs l. Acid etched. Does the wrapping hold up as well over time? Since the Dynasty is important to me, I would hate for it to wear down.
I'm thinking of a Retro 51 pen set : with a Pink Floyd ball point with an extra fine and a fountain pen (same theme) with an extra fine.
Then I'm sold.......even if I have to get a second mortgage.
Thinking to myself, "Why do I keep clicking on these videos?"
It's a great time for writing in your journals or sketchbook with your new fountain pen and inks for Goulet Pen by candle light...…...Your customer should send in images of them writing with a fountain pen by candle light...…...
Hope you'll be safe despite the hurricane! And I personally refuse to buy Retro 51 because I know I'll need all of them if I start :p
Yes, it is a slippery slope on par with fountain pens. Just have to hope that no new editions appeal to you! Couldn't resist dinos, but who knows where that leads from here. ;) - Colin
Dang, I didn't know about most of these versions. Real pretty! Gotta ask though, what's the nail polish?
Also, stay safe everyone! Hope no damages or disturbances happen.
Stay safe. Praying for everyone at Goulet Pens that you'll experience no harm or property damage.
My understanding was the popper referred to a click mechanism rather than the twist of the tornado, and does not mean limited. Could that be clarified please. Love everything you do.
Unless there's other Poppers, Brian was referring to the Tornado Poppers which are still twist mechanisms and are limited edition. Here's more info from the Retro 51 site: www.retro51.com/fwi_tor_pop.html - Colin
I have to be silly…Love the cut away, but Brian what color is your nail polish? :-p
Great info as always, thanks.
Looks like Colorverse Space Laika to me. Or maybe Noodler's Whaleman's Sepia? ;) - Colin
Not interested... *sees fossil pen... goes to goulet pens to buy*
Kephra Rubin I feel you....now I want the fossil pen
It was my first Retro 51 purchase, didn't think this day would come, but dinos! - Colin
Yeah it's hard to pass up dinos! Lol
Same here!!
Ok, these are starting to look pretty cool. Brian mentioned some "popper" ones that are limited. How do I know if they will be limited? Will the description say limited edition? Want to make sure I don't miss out on one .
Yeah our product page should say limited edition popper. Here's the page from Retro 51: www.retro51.com/fwi_tor_pop.html . Looks like 4 have been released this year with 2 more to come. We started with Engine 37 just a few weeks ago but we don't really market it because they tend to sell pretty quickly, especially if it's a popular design. Just something to keep an eye out on! - Colin
Good to know. Thanks Colin!
What's the ETA for Retro producing Fountain Pen editions again?
No clear ETA, but should be this fall, maybe November? Just saw a version with a few changes and I'm pretty impressed! - Colin
I love mine, so if they’ve improved it, it’ll be worth the wait!
Will Goulet be getting the Retro 51 fountain pens at any point?
Yes! Should be coming later this fall. - Colin
Hooray! I really like the look of the black cherry finish.
I love the Buzz. However, $40 for a pen or $40 for a fountain pen?? 🤔 ......
That's the dilemma, isn't it? That said, I got the Dino one yesterday and I'm loving it. I've got plenty of great fountain pens, but not many other pens. - Colin
I have the buzz and i don't regret it. The honeycomb etching feels so nice and i love the details like the bear finial. I also own dr. grey and now the dino so just be warned that it's hard to only have one retro 51.
The Goulet Pen Company For as long as I can remember, I’ve had a pen and mechanical pencil virus...then I caught the fountain pen virus...LOL dang, I’ll probably go for it.
Do the Retro 51 come in extra fine point or fine?
Ours only come stocked with one side which is probably a medium but looking online, it seems there might be some fine options that are compatible. Schmidt & Monteverde could work? - colin
The Goulet Pen Company Thanks for the info!!
Do you sell the refills for these pens
Just the Retro 51 refills (www.gouletpens.com/collections/retro-51-rollerball-refills ). I believe others fit but not sure of different compatibilities. - Colin
Any "Parker Style" also referred to as "G-2 style" refill should work in these pens. Just go go your local Staples, Office Max or Depot. Go to the area with the fancy pens and see what kind of refills there are. Find a refill for a Parker Pen and any other refill that looks like that will work. Other popular brands in this style are Schmidt, Fisher and even Monteverde makes a few. I personally like the Parker Quink Gel refill in my Retro.

Meh. Too gimmicky.
They do have a couple solid color options like this Stealth one (www.gouletpens.com/collections/retro-51-tornado-rollerball-pens/products/retro-51-tornado-rollerball-pen-stealth?variant=12766414176299 ) if you're not into each design. - Colin
