- Today, we're going to take a look at the Retro51 Tornado, a very nicely made pen, with a nice refill, and serious EDC cred, which ultimately ended up blowing me away.

I have been using Retro 51 pens for many years and have that exact pen. No big deal, but just so you know, the brand is Retro 51, the style is Tornado and the model is Lincoln. There are many Tornado models that do not have that swirl pattern. I think tornado refers to the shape, not the pattern. What is great about this pen: They make excellent gifts with many different patterns and themes, and are relatively inexpensive. The bad: the clip still works perfectly fine, but after a number of years of use, the clip is a little loose and wiggles.
adamar 26.2madness I agree with all of the above. I have a leather version and my clip is incredibly loose. I’ve checked with a local AD and they said that the only way to repair the clip was to send it to Retro 51.
LOL better review in the comments.
Can I stab someone with it ? Is it tactical??? Lol my girl just heard this video and said “are you watching THAT GUY again? Did he just say pen?” 😹
My wife is starting to hate me for watching Nick that much.
omg, same here... 😂
Great review , your insights are very interesting, I love trying out different brands, watching your posts ,gives mea headstart ,thanks.
I've had one for years in a titanium blue and silver color scheme. It is a great pen and your review is spot on.
It was worth waiting til the end for that wonderfully painful pun! Truly, these are great pens. Two points I didn't hear clearly mentioned: the Tornado comes in a WIDE range of finishes; some folks even collect 'em! There's always a new theme. Of course, they're such great pens, that one will serve you well and last and last and last. Second point, these can serve as tactical pens while truly "flying under the radar"!
I'm a die hard fountain pen user and always have several on my person for daily use -- supplemented nearly all the time by my Retro 51 Tornado. They're easy to operate one handed, too!
Have one. Great pen 4:01 but definitely needed this to remind me how to change the refill
What a voice! Excellent reviews, too. Many thanks.
again commenting on an old video...I noticed the tip being a different color at the beginning and thought "odd"....then after you showed the little Tornado design on it I thought "Brilliant"....The tip is like debris scatter, dirt and so forth.....Great Touch....Thanks for the review...I'm keeping this one in mind...
I had one of these for 4 years before i finally lost it, i bought a new one to replace it. I use Fisher pressurized refills in them. I like the feel son much i bought the fountain pen versian then replaced the nib with a 1.1mm stub and i love them both.
Received mine yesterday and it is a beauty. It seems they corrected 2 of the nick-picks: the point is chamfered and the color is uniform.
I love the Tornado. I keep a "Lincoln" set in my suit. Gorgeous pen.
Really awesome design look pen!!!😊👍💜
Your pun in the end blew me away.
You should review matching mp! Eraser alone will blow your mind; plus lead thickness is great !
If you put up an Amazon affiliate link I'll definitely use it, I'll probably pick one up, but I'd like to support the channel if I can
I have had a Jefferson and maple burle retro51 for many years now. Some of my favorite pens with Parker refills. Be careful of the clip as you said, my Jefferson rocks a broken clip, no way to service myself.
Great review, thanks Nick
No crap Bic. For me either I go for a Fisher space pen with f 301 or my cross edge or my pentel enner gel the alloy metal version or I go for even my forray twist pen witch is a met pen with a laccured finish
)))warning the forray I'm talking about is discontinued(((
The refill is a Schmidt p8217 btw if you like the refill enough to toss it in another pen
would a mont blanc roller refill fit into it?
As far as I know, this specific finish is named Lincoln, Tornado being the model. Love these pens due to all the available finishes - everyone will find something that they like.
Can this pen fit a mont blanc rollerball refill?
I think I might grab one of those.
Saw the video...bought the pen. It's actually really nice. Hope this doesn't happen with any watch videos I see.
My favorite pen to write with but I’ve had two fall apart on me this year. 😐. Back to Lamy fountain and rollerball pens.
Try the Lamy Pico for a good EDC type pocket pen.
Fall Spain?? Excuse my ignorance
tim rogers typo
@@patricknaswell2686 gotcha. I was super confused.
does ink smears with this rollerball pens?
Whoa! I thought these pens were clickers! Thank for the informative review!
I think I'm getting a little more amenable to the idea of a brass pen. That's handsome. Pardon my previous prejudices.
You're pardoned
These are fine writing instruments.
Thanks for the review. Not my favorite pen. The cap can be difficult to remove for ink cartridge replacement because of the smooth metal surfaces.
Well done...
It's a 'nick pick' but you did not mention the amount of pen that's outside of the pocket as the clip is not deep carry. Was this intentional? Thanks for the review!
Ehh, that's borderline for me, in this case, with the knurling, the retrieval is just so good. But I should've mentioned it.
To add to that “nick pick” - on my Tornados, I’ve had a problem with the top of the pen being heavy enough to pull the pen off balance if clipped to the placket of a shirt (I usually keep my pen clipped to my shirt placket behind my tie.)
RoboJim contributes alot to your channel.
He does!
The Parker pen you have is my favorite, but try the plastic one, your fingers slip too much on the metal.I find Parker refills have none of that stutter that you talked about.
6:30 Its Tactical . High Speed Low Drag!
Nick have you tried a Lamy Pico?
Not yet!
Nick Shabazz Lamy ballpoint and rollerball refills are crappy! I've tried four M16 refills for the Safari, they all skip. I'm still quite infuriated because the Safari is such an awesome pen!

Cut down a Montblanc Fineliner and jam it in there, excellent.
I put one of these pens in my mailbox as a Christmas gift to the mail lady, but apparently she didn't think much of it as she never bothered to acknowledge it.😟
Btw, you paid $30 while I bought mine for $45 or $50 off Amazon. I was robbed.😠
...and the Retro 51 comes in Titanium, too! 😵
looks top heavy
I will take the Bic Roundstick. Still impressive that you can talk for 10 minutes about a pen.
Eee thats all folks!
i like to watch some videos at 2x speed for efficiency but nick talks so fast already i struggle to understand at 1.75x speed! Im not a newbie at sped up videos, been doing that for years and thats how i got through med school.
But this pen, at $30, lacks the most valuable quality a pen can have: Disposability. I like not having to keep track of my pens the same way I look after my keys. I have a profusion of pens around me, and they are constantly getting lost and being found. At least that is the case for ones I use around the house. As for pens at work, I use to work with idiots who would not carry a pen. But they would come over to talk to you and say, can I borrow your pen? Then five min later they are deep in concentration chewing on the end of your pen. With a cheap employer furnished pen, I can tell them to keep it.
One time I had a guy at an adjoining desk who insisted on borrowing my ruler rather than getting one himself. I discouraged his borrowing by letting him see me using the ruler as a back-scratcher. Under the shirt, of course. But I digress.
..... did you really just type that? Lol
This is a review... of a non disposable pen.
That's like comparing Gription work gloves to disposable vinyl gloves and knocking them for not being disposable lol
Like... really?
EDC pens and other gear may not be for the percentage of people who could loose them. An el cheapo ho hum pen or other thing is called for.
I’ve had this pen for years and have never lost it. If you care about something you won’t lose it.
