    Great hack “BIG” Tom! An added tip ... put ink into a shot glass or sample tube and just put your dry ink tube in and leave it to wick up the ink. You can flip it if you want full saturation.

    Thanks Tom. I always love these "hacks." I've already tried this in a couple of "Flairs," a "Pilot Precise V7 Roller Ball" and a "Hi-Liter" with good success. It's NICE to find new ways to use fountain pen ink and to expand the boring colors that usually come in over the counter pens.

    • @radellaf
      @radellaf 5 лет назад

      The V7 is a little different since it has an ink chamber rather than a sponge/fiber reservoir. You have to pull the point-feed assembly and then it's just like an eyedropper fill FP. Flair pens are fiber refill just like the Retro.

    There's an easier (if slower) way to do this with fiber-reservoir refills like that if you've used them up first. Just put it point down in a mL of ink in a sample vial and give it a few hours, or a day (whenever the level of ink in the vial stops going down). This also works for partially dried out refills if you use water (but use .25mL or so at a time, stop when the water doesn't absorb or any ink color comes out of the point). This method will not work with Tombow or Pilot V5 type free-ink (FP-like) reservoirs. Cleaning a refill, emptying with a paper towel and refilling, repeat a bunch, would take forever. But, if you actually use your rollerball nearly dry, you can fill with FP ink and use the blue or black color residue. Red in black for a nice red-black, green into the blue for a teal color.

    I like the idea of filling rollerballs with fountain pen ink, but I'm a bit weary of doing it with the Retro 51 given its capless design. Anyone have recommendations for capped pens that use the same refill or that can have the same hack applied to their refills?

  • @_iErik

    Can this be done to other refills, like the Schmidt 5888, Monteverde rollerball refill, or Pelikan 338?

  • @matthewschneider8106

    What an interesting thing to do and try. I couldn't really tell in the video, but it seems that the sponge has some kind of casing that keeps ink from contacting the metal barrell, is that true?

    • @GoldspotPens
      @GoldspotPens  5 лет назад +2

      Right. It's a plastic coating that keeps the sponge from touching everything. Only the ends are exposed.

  • @jodicobourn7445

    Could you use Speedball brand inks for this? I know the ink used in the video is water based. Would non-water based inks be too viscous for something like this?

    • @GoldspotPens
      @GoldspotPens  2 года назад +1

      We haven't tried it. But, we feel like the water-based dye ink will provide the best flow. India or shellac-based inks might be too thick.

    The refill cartridge price is what has kept me from using this and other rollerball pens. Could you use the same technique for other pens as well?

    • @GoldspotPens
      @GoldspotPens  5 лет назад +1

      This particular refill, although it fits the Retro 51 rollerball, does fit other rollerball pens that are compatible with this Schmidt 8126 short capless cartridge. So, any pen that uses this type of cartridge, you could perform the hack in the same manner.

    • @drawmeanelephant69420
      @drawmeanelephant69420 5 лет назад +2

      Why not just skip the eyedropper and set sponge in ink? Way less mess that way b

    • @radellaf
      @radellaf 5 лет назад

      The method works with most rollerballs, including disposables like Uni-Ball, as long as they have fiber reservoirs instead of a free-ink (FP-like) system like a Pilot V5. For that type (e.g., Tombow) you have to pull the "feed" out and ED fill. If you can find a way to get the plug out of the back you can either do what's in the video, or just use a syringe to refill a used-up pen by sticking it into the end of the fiber and slowly filling (watch closely in good light, maybe with the point slightly above the back, to see when it's full, then suck a bit of ink back out). The new UniBall Micro pens have a very hard to remove plug, so I usually refill those with the capillary method where you put it point down in a sample vial with a mL or so of ink. If it's not too dried out, it'll suck up the ink. The color won't be pure because of the original ink residue, but I don't mind.

    • @GoldspotPens
      @GoldspotPens  3 года назад +1

      This method only works for the rollerball style cartridge. The ballpoint refills are filled with paste ink and don't have the same sponge that the rollerball has.
