- This is what happened when I broke lawn care Rule #1 when it comes to brown spots in the lawn.
Fungus in my St Aug - this was a correct diagnosis but there was much more going on in addition to the fungus which we now know. • St FUNGUStine

To clarify: The diagnosis of brown patch disease in summer was correct, but where I made the mistake is that once most of it was recovered, the areas that remained brown I should have dug in those earlier but I kept thinking it was just slow to recover from the disease and lack of water. But really, I was hit with both - disease AND grubs. I hope that makes sense. Key point - dig!
Solid advice!
Maybe you could try some Andersons Organic Grub Control ....it's the bacteria - BT-Galleriae....the BT we all know/love but the strain that targets grubs...I used it this year and OMG it is amazing...
If I hear you try to apologize about not making your own lawn as perfect as your clients i will put up a meme of laurel and hardy.
You purposely saved the video of you squeezing the guts out of grubs for thanksgiving day afternoon, right after I’ve eaten. Thanks. 😂
They taste like chicken ! 🤘
Oh yeah he specifically mentioned saving it just for you jimothy.
@@TheLawnCareNut mine taste like chicken with a kick of nicotine! 😜
Great video man really enjoyed it and your videos are helpful and I appreciate you happy Thanksgiving to you all!!!
Just in time for pudding!
I mean this is on my top list of lawn care but videos. Over the past 2-3 years of watching all your videos, this one hits the top. The reason is because no matter what there is always something to learn and I like that. Great video and hope you had a great thanksgiving.
Thanks Alan for a fantastic 1st year in keeping my lawn lush and green. I really enjoyed it!
Nice work bro !! Your nuttiness has only just begun !
Grubs and a hurricane in the same week and you still make a sunny 😎 positive video. Well played fine sir. Well played.
hoorah thanks bro!
Happy Thanksgiving Bro. In 2008 that happened to me. I started pulling up a few spots thinking I could just resod those spots. I end up pulling up all 2K sq ft and re sodding the whole lawn. 12 years later the lawn is still going strong and I learned my lesson.
My man and partner. Happy Thanksgiving bro 👍
I remember when you taught this lesson a while ago. I had some brown patch last year, pulled up so much grass it was scary. Confirmed grubs, followed your steps and got it fixed.
Yelp, me and my bermuda back yard had a moment, till I started noticing mole damage from eating grubs in my yard. About the only yard with damage because I started improving my soil and micros...definitely paid too, lesson learned. Good stuff Allyn.
I had a grub attack this late summer and then a case of moles. Wiped out the front yard. Digging, digging, diging. I didn't do it other. But, I have a project for the spring and who doesn't want to level a yard, when you can. Lesson learned.
Happy Thanksgiving, Allyn! We very much are thankful for you and all that you have done for each of us over the years. May God bless you, Sir.
Wow exactly what happened to me and my brother. We are now in the process of adding new sod to many areas. I made the exact assumptions you made and I paid the price. But now I know and this will not happen again. Thanks
This is a great video, shows that no one is perfect all the time.
thank you for sharing. this video is a great reminder of the damage grubs can do. i live in the midwest where besides grubs we often have to deal with ticks as well. i used to treat my lawn with spectracide granular insecticide in the spring and had no issues with critters for about 2 months but noticed that i would get dead spots in mid to late summer. turns out it was grubs so i stated doing a second light application and that did the trick for me. no more issues. i don’t like using chemicals but haven’t found an effective alternative.
Enjoyed the sailing clip at the end. This video was a blend of the two things I watch on RUclips. Happy Thanksgiving!
Love the vid allen!! Love seeing what to do. But I really love watching what NOT to do. You show the good and bad. Thanks!
Wow. I had the same thing happen in NWI. I too let it go (hubby was cutting the grass and I never walked my ground) . I dug and there was grubs!! Well, I got mad and burnt the grass off cause of the poa annua as well. I will take care of it in 2021! 😂
OMG I have done the same thing. My problem was crane fly’s and grubs. It happened where we get quite a bit of rain runoff. I did use 1app of grub x . I think it washed away. Live n learn. Thanks Al
That sail boat at the end brings back so many happy memories.
OMG! You are human. Not too many people will wear their humility on their sleeve like this. Sometimes I find that we tell ourselves we don't have a specific problem because we talk ourselves out of the investigation, and often the right remedy, for whatever reason. Great Vidya. Never be apprehensive to consult others. Sometimes they can talk us off the ledge. Cheers.
Thank you ,👍🤘
In addition to grubs you might consider that you may also have some Take All Root Rot (TARR) - Gaeumannomyces graminis var. graminis. When I had a St. Augustine lawn, I never had a problem with grubs and I never treated them. I did have a lot of TARR because of too much water caused by my improper watering in combination with the often rainy East Texas rainy climate. The cheapest solution I found as opposed to re-sodding was a 0.5 inch of sphagnum peat moss. Make sure before applying peat most to go out with a leave rake and dethatch or take out as much of that brown dead crap and bag it and throw it away. There is something in the peat moss that cures TARR and as an added benefit you get some organic nutrients amended to the soil. No doubt you have some grubs because you found them and they are probably munching on all of those yummy stolens.
Great video Allyn, hang in there. That St. Augustine will recover quickly with just a little love.
I’m out here in Southern California and was hit hard with grubs this year. Had to pull out a pretty big area in me fescue. Dropped spectracide on it a couple of days ago but definitely looking forward to seeing your next video. Maybe at the beginning of next year you can provide a step by step of buying the right tools, dirt and sod to patch up those damaged areas.
Damn grubs..... At least you figured it out. Nice job!!🥃🥃
This year grub control was applied either late June or early July. Just a yearly application we use every year. But in late in the summer the grass had brown patches throughout (live in Michigan). Those damn grubs attacked my yard. Contacted Lesco and the representative said that this year, we’ve had a bad drought and they grow down in the soil. The grub control was less protective. I’ve been hammering water due to the drought. Man you can’t win....all the grubs came up in my yard! Reapplied for grubs, cut out most of the affected area and laid new sod.
Savage move at 7:00 ! Make them pay!!! 🤣 Thanks for sharing.
On the bright side, the guy's lawn across the street looks super nice
Granual Milky spores works well. Its the only thing I put down for grubs on my property.
It’s kind of funny that you mentioned breaking your own advice and not digging. You may recall I had shared pics of my park strip with you earlier this summer. I was convinced it was fungus, you felt it was more so stress. Well. You were probably right as I later noticed my irrigation was way out of adjustment hardly irrigating that area. I water at 4am and never did a walk around to check coverage this year.
Any way been a great season my turf did well, lots of credit to what if I’ve learned from LCN and love the convenience and selection of YardMastery.
Happy Thanksgiving 🦃
No joke the EXACT same thing happened to me. Although up here in wa state it’s too late and cold to aerate the lawn I did put some insecticides down and in the spring I’m gonna do some renovations. I think I didn’t do the pull test at first cause I was hoping it wasn’t grubs. Lesson learned in my end too!
I honestly could have guessed this at the beginning. Here in the uk we too are still seeing chafer grubs.. they're still high in the profile but starting to go dormant as we ease into early winter. Wish we had insecticides here.
Don’t worry about it, LCN. I service hundreds of properties in north GA and I’ve over complicated things before instead of just digging!!! Sometimes it’s that simple LOL
Good vid Alan ... my St Aug looks like crap right now. Fortunately, no grubs, but just looking punky (but green) after the weed and feed. I'll just keep plugging along. After seeing this video ... I'm reminded, that as much as I love working on my lawn, ... I'd rather be sailing! Happy Thanksgiving everyone!
Literally made the same mistake on my lawn this season. I will never make that mistake again!
Exactly right 👍🤘
It's revenge of that grub you popped when you reset your sprinklers near the pool. lol I prefer to throw the grubs on the sidewalk and watch the birds go bonkers for them. :D
Same. Saw it coming from a few houses down the street. By the time I knew it.. it was in my front yard
7:02 " You better had throw up all that grass you ate" LOL
I gotta get it back somehow! 😂
Man I really hope the US-Canada border opens up by spring next year. I need to pick up Grub EX, weed b got and Jonathan green UB or my lawn is toast!!!
Just found one of those guys while fixing the irrigation yesterday, even after putting down imidacloprid just 2 weeks ago. Also have an area between 2 trees that are not really recovering and look similar to what you have there. Timing couldn't have been any better.
Thank you Allyn! You are The Godfather!
thanks bro!
I literally check for your videos daily. I probably look forward to them more than I should lol.. about to put down a grub app myself, I think I’m dealing with the same issue down here in fort Myers as well
thank you for that bro! Be sure you dig and check for sure!
Oh man, I also received a dose of humble pie in late summer on my back yard which was looking amazing. Over applied Aluminum Sulfate thinking that was the only problem, but then also got hit by a round of grubs. Almost a total loss between the two.
Wow... grub prevention is a must for my Ohio lawns. Skunks and other critters will dig up hour lawn beyond recognition during the night which is a early give away. I throw 'er down every Spring...🤣
That’s too bad about your lawn. Glad you figured out the problem. Happy Thanksgiving, and thank you for sharing.
hey bro! thanks for the comment! Good news is I know it will come back so it will be all good!
Happy Thanksgiving! All the best to you & your family.
4:40 " I have Beautiful black soil compared to my neighbours who have dry sand" 🤣😂😅💪
Thank you for all your helpful advice! Enjoying learning all kinds of new stuff and trying to apply it.
Happy Thanksgiving Allyn! Thank you for sharing all of your knowledge with us.
I agree for cool season lawns it's much more important.
Now i can finally say for once my lawn is almost in better shape than yours.. at least until yours recovers from those grubs!
Mine always suffers from me driving over/parking cars on it, spilling/leaking coolant, gas and oils..(Freedom Factory type of damage) but due to the covid lockdowns Ive had lots of spare time for lawn care last summer, and that shows! :)
The Guy who started it all for me, with those Indiana stripes Happy Thanksgiving
I have St. Augustine Raleigh and live in the west part of the FL panhandle... I did put Grub EX as well as Spectracide granules twice throughout 2020. I also did a blanket application of Bifen IT about the first weekend of October. I also did Disease EX and BioAdvance RTS fungicide twice this year. After seeing a yellowing that started in one part of the lawn, a week ago I did another Disease EX and Bioadvance RTS fungicide thinking there was a large patch on my lawn since the soil temperature dipped below 70F for a bit. After all the fungus and insect treatment, the grass is still gradually yellowing. Could it be that my grass is going into dormancy? It has not been cold at all... I do not understand what's going on. Can you please give me some direction? Thanks Allyn.
Thanks for the videos. Have learned a lot since I subscribed. When will your products be available in California?
Some of them are now. Working on the rest.
Thanks for the great video. Just proves that we all can have problems in the lawn but if we follow a diagnosis process, it can be corrected.
I know you said that you will make a video with the chemical that you used, but I am facing similar issues now, did you use Bifen I/T? Thanks.
Bifen won't do it. You want trichlorfon
Happy Thanksgiving back at you Allyn thanks for getting us through a tough year with great videos and music to relax us!!!!!!
Keep em coming!!!!!!
Say hi to DAD for us!!!!
I gave up on those Toro heads....one batch most heads wouldn’t drop when done. Stripped gears etc...boy did they go down hill. Switched to Hunter ultra and not one issue.
I've used toro and Hunter and always go back to Rainbird. Where I live now they have Hunder sprinkler heads installed and the lawn started dying when it got hot. When I tested out the sprinklers, half the heads didn't work so I replaced them with the same thing. After a week or two, things didn't get better, so I checked the heads again and half of them weren't working again. I guess the water pressure in this area varies too much for them to work reliably. I replaced them all with rainbird and things are going great. No problems at all.
Happy Thanksgiving...I did the exact same thing to my twin brothers yard this year up here in Orange Park florida 🤣..we wouldn't be human without the mistakes..love the song at the end while sailing... don't worry about making videos every other day for us RUclipsrs..Go enjoy the holidays with your family!!..we will be here when you get back👍
Appreciate the videos all year long bud !
Here I’m watching this with my father-in-law. We looked at each other with that “Ewwww” expression when you squeezed those grubs!
😂😬
Not even lying you need more Anoles around your house. I find these grubs and the lizards absolutely suck em’ down!
Learning right along with you!
When I see a patch of sorts, I usually apply a fungicide cocktail. But the simple fact that a fungus invaded the grass tells me the grass is stressed in some way, so I also apply a heave insecticide to address any other concerns, especially grubs, sod worms and chinch bugs.
Hey Allyn quick couple of questions I have a brown patch problem 3 weeks ago I threw down some disease ex in granular and bioadvance fungus control hose spray but still have the problem. I lower my watering because I thought it came from to much water, do you recommend another dose of disease ex and fungus control? And do I throw it down with the temp fluctuation we're going to have in Orlando in the next few days? Thanks for your help I enjoy your videos.
Bag those clippings make sure you are using the curative rates 🤞🏻
@@lawn2learn Thanks for the advice, mine is a side discharge but I'll blow the clippings off and watering as usual? (I water twice a week)
I live just north of Nashville , Tn my front lawn is mostly tall fescue. I have Bermuda grass in one section. I need to know how to rid the Bermuda grass. When do I oversee and put my first shot of fertilizer? Thanks
Thanks for posting your humanness.
👍👊
How did you repair those areas and what products did you use.
Happy Belated Thanksgiving to you and I'm sorry for not thinking to say this to any videos today. At least I done it once yesterday LoL.
What's the best way to prevent these? I've had them pretty bad the last two years. I normally use ortho bug b gone, but seems that doesn't help too much.
Looking forward to the next video!! Happy holidays !!
I don't know that much about all the lawn diseases but my first guess was grubs. I've had my run-ins with grubs over the years.
Nothing like squishing grubs right after filling up on thanksgiving dinner........thanks Big Al. LOL
Ha ha !! 👊🤣🤣🤣
You trained me well the first thing I said when I looked at you grabbing the grass is grubs
Blame Brett. He was the distraction..😂🤣😂🤣. Hope you're having a great Thanksgiving Allyn 👊🏻
Yes he is and was 🤣🤣🤣🤣
🙁 My neighbors are my grubs. They park in front of MY house/lawn and walk across and also, can't get out of their cars in their drive without stepping all over mine. I'm hoping to afford some type of fence that still looks decent for front sides without costing a ton. May I ask what was that pink flower / plant? I love it.
I did the same EXACT thing this summer! I'll be all over this next year, 100%.
So I've got small worms all throughout my property.. should I only apply to my lawn?? I don't have anything of importance out in the rest of the property....
I used to lose my lawn to grubs all the time, started using Acelyprin and I have never had a problem since.
good job DR Lawn !! when are you going to show us a bout the palm tree green up ???
soon for sure!
I was thinking grubs due to the time of year (Aug.-Sept) and that video you did on the life cycle of a grub.
That music and detective work at the beginning had me expecting you to cut to a clip of you yelling in the street "THERE WAS A FIREFIIIIGHHHTTT" ....straight out of boondock saints! Happy Thanksgiving bro!
I'm curious about your thoughts on milky spore: whether or not you used it for grub control and why.
It can work but takes several years to build up .
@@TheLawnCareNut so why do you never talk about it then? I started two years ago and it has completely solved my grub issues. It always makes me nervous that you never talk about it like there’s some sort of downside.
I got it also! I put down dr earth Organic Fungicide!! Hope it help!
Feel your pain I did the same thing with fall army worm last year 😭
Our st. augestine dyed after the freeze Dec 2 2020 any suggestion? is it dead?
I think Brett must have planted them in your lawn to get a little headstart
for sure I can blame him and he can't say anything about it! ha ha!
Thanks LCN for making a bad week better. That was a big grub, are they vine weevil grubs? Christmas light video incoming?
Hey, where is the video of what you did he fix the issue?
the music as he's smashing grubs... hahaah!!!
haa LCN , always trust your gut, and now I am watching the grub destruction that is leading to the extinction of them out of your yard but you will get it resolved because you are the right man for the Job .
Happy thanksgiving to your family too.
Did you not put grub killer down this year? I always do, my experience most times brown patch is from grubs. My fescue lawn the grubs were as deep as 6-8 inches!! Pull test is what encouraged me to keep digging
Happy Thanksgiving Allyn !
My lawn had a breakout of grubs last month here in the cape. I think the wild cattle egret have taken care of it for me.
Great , you tought me how to fix my lawn , and now I have another thing to worry about ! I'm up here in the Northeast should I put grub x down now or wait till April ?
Hope you had a great Thanksgiving
what video had that shot footage of the nature strip?
Happy Thanksgiving! Ow. That sounds painful getting bit in the root(s)🤣. I found some grubs in part of the lawn earlier this year and threw down some grub treatment. Die grubs die! That boat looks like fun!
I'm in n.e pa. When should I apply disease x and should I apply grub x , also. ( Feb, March 2021)?
What is the best sprinkler head and spray nozzle to us on St.Augustine?
Thank you, Al.
Appreciate you putting out this video.
👍
Happy Thanksgiving (a day late)!
✌️
LOL...was gonna say "didnt you do a grub app".... Nope you answered that. Damn grubs and sod-webworm tore me up this year. One thing I learned is Bayer Advanced liquid insecticide does NOT work well on sod-webworm. did 3 apps and they just laughed at it. Hit my lawn 2x with Bifen IT (one app followed by another in 3 weeks) and webworm dead.
Sorry brother...but you give us amateurs all hope!🤣...thanks for everything this year!
🤘🤣👊
Should have put um on the grill, little thanksgiving appetizers. 🤣
I hear they taste like chicken!
