  • The Toronto Maple Leafs got their first victory of the pre-season, but did we get a clearer idea of which forwards are making a case for a job in the bottom six? Mike DiStefano and David Morassutti give their thoughts on the Leafs' 2-1 victory over the Montreal Canadiens, which had some concerning moments with William Nylander leaving the game and John Tavares limited after a hit. With the victory, Mike and Dave get to hand out their Three Stars of the Game, highlighting strong performances for Nick Robertson, a pair of veteran defencemen and Easton Cowan. Mike and Dave end the show by discussing the tough decisions the Leafs coaching staff have to make, with a lot of forwards vying for jobs in the bottom six and only so many positions up for grabs.

    Cowan couldn’t get through defensemen in practice and got easily knocked off the puck by AHLers himself. It’s been reported that Pacioretty and Lorentz basically have deals in place to join the team. Cowan isn’t ready or making the team. He’d get eaten up by the Panthers and Bruins. But y’all keep weaving fantasies because that’s what you’re being sold.

      didn't see him making the team being the questionable 28th overall pick. send him back down let hunter work on the issues management sees with him and let him play the world juniors and the memorial cup

      Berube know what he signed up for. He's not stupid. Maybe Treliving sold him on future moves, specifically next summer when the Leafs have a lot of money to play with.

    Kypreos going off on Robertson is pathetic. It was an incredibly unlucky play. Sure it was a lazy move but no one would mention it if Willy stays on his feet

      To be honest , after watching Nylanderbfor years , i have a feeling he probably thought it was a Montreal player hooking so he took a dive
      These guys are very hard to knock down when they dont want to go down , also the love tap to the helmet puts Nylander out of the game ? My god

      Robo did nothing wrong. Guys do this all the time now and it CAN work. The outcome sucks but the play is common. Robertson's being told to compete at his hardest and he was.

    I've seen leaf player's and others do that exact same play to boost their teammates in the past and I always thought it was a good play. It might have been Reilly I believe done it in the Tampa series and it worked.
    Willie falling and getting hurt is just unfortunate that's all.

    • @timlee1794
      @timlee1794 18 часов назад

      It was a low-IQ play by Robertson. Montreal already had puck possession and starting to turn up ice. Plus, the Leafs had 2 defencemen back. The push made no sense.

    • @bradbradbury8561
      @bradbradbury8561 15 часов назад +1

      @@timlee1794 Reilly did that same push in the playoffs when they played against the lightning and it was a good play, what's the difference?
      There is none, only your opinion. Multiple players do that same move to help their teammates get back on defense, if you watched hockey you'd see that.
      And if he went back on his own as some have suggested, to get Willie's man and the puck went the other way for a goal against, who's fault do you think it would be then?
      It would have been Robertson's fault for not staying and covering his man.
      Sometimes making the right play doesn't go as planned, it's called bad luck, and that's all that happened here on that play, bad luck.
      It's too bad but it happens.

      Thanks, even with Matthews not playing, Willie leaving in the second period, and JT only playing 12 minutes they still outplayed them badly, getting outshot 34-17.
      All joking aside, MTL should be around a 40 win team this year and about a 88pt team, and next year pushing for a playoff spot.

    Robertson's mistake was assuming the player in front of him was intent on backchecking hard and would benefit from a boost. If he would have hesitated long enough to view Nylander's number he would have known that impossible.

  • @Spike10111

    This was a Robertson game in a nutshell. He has a lethal shot but lacks hockey IQ. He wants to make a name, and get a raise, which means he's too trigger happy and not team oriented. He plays like he's on an island by himself. Berube needs to coach that out of him if they decide to keep him.

    • @bradbradbury8561
      @bradbradbury8561 19 часов назад

      Low hockey IQ, he stripped his guy on the back ckeck of the puck, drawed a penalty, and went in and scored the game winning goal, all on the same play.

      during regular season when you are not already down a man and the game means something. pre-season pretty much means nothing except having players go through the motions, getting reps in and seeing who fits in where.
