Thank you for the super detailed and thorough test!
wow man at 18:27 I thought you'd skip the screwing part, but you explained that too!! Amazing explanation, keep it up!
After 3 weeks from this video, 4090 legion is out of stock. I think this is because everyone noticed that this year’s legion pro 7i is the best bang for the buck laptop of this year and it has the best price-performance ratio in my opinion.
the 4080 is good too
I just got this laptop with the 4090 for $2500 from B&H on black friday. An absolute steal imo.
2700 with taxes😂 i know cuz i got it too
current promo is $2500 with no taxes, if you get approved for their credit card.@@KhalilAlcantara
I'm waiting for 10am to go buy one at B&H (that store is crushing it lately).
On sale $1,999.99. My first gaming laptop, looking forward to it.
Just recieved my replacement yesterday. Excited to put its through its paces.
Guys, 4080 version is at 2199 on B&H, sick deal with 32 GB ram!
Just got the 4090 there for $2,650... good prices. Think it retails around $3,300.

This was very nice to see. I just got the 4080 one and looking forward to it even though I think it is $500 more expensive than it should be just because nVidia bumped up prices of GPUs in the last few years but hopefully this lasts more than 6 years and goes strong for motion design/video/photo editing.
How much did you pay for it ?
I see one on sale for $2050 USD right now the 4080 one with 32 GB Ram and the i9. Im wondering if the price has dropped down
@@brentcox2961 US prices will always be lower but of course add tax and for me currency exchange in Canada is world be about the same as that. I still think that's way too much but everything is too much these days it should be at least 500 cheaper

New sub! You got me! Soon as you said your for the ppl. That's all I needed to hear. Thank you for dedication and hard work. 😊
Looking forward to a guide on undervolting/overclocking this laptop!
BH got the 4090 version 32gb for $2499 and the 4080 was selling for $1999.
and it's still there
You do excellent work, and your videos are chalk full of valuable information. Bought a 4090 version after weeks of research. It's a powerhouse. Awesome experience so far. You're right about the display. While the gamut may be lacking slightly, the brightness compensates, and it's plenty vibrant. Thanks for taking the time to test all these awesome machines.
I'm glad you are going to do a follow up video with the custom profile option and undervolt. You are leaving a lot of performance on the table, crank those power options, I hit 33.8k in cinebench and almost 23k (combined) in Timespy. Changing the power options has a huge impact on gpu.
What graphic score in timespy?
Also very interested in the follow up video!!
Very interested in this as well!

Can you share your undervolt, power management settings?
Superb review and thank you!
Thanks for watching
Please do the tweaking and optimizing video step by step for the Legion Pro 7i
Brand new subscriber here! Thanks so much for helping with my decision. I will be picking this up tomorrow as I have one on hold for me. Did you ever do a live stream showing how to under volt this and tamper with overlocking safely?
Yes! I would love to see you optimizing this bad boy!!
Yea sold. Although no DaVinci/ editing charts. Please make videos for us editors! Thanks. And a clean comparison to desktop 4080 please 😜. I've heard the legion 5 3090ti out performs /holds up to 40 series?
Thank you Gizmo!! Are you planning to underclocking / overclocking for the Legion 7i? Just choosing performance mode and overclocking the GPU, I can get 22,500+ on Time Spy graphics.
Great content 👌 👏
Thanks! That was very helpful, in terms of both the laptop, and buying strategy. What did you think of the fan noise?
Picked up the 4090 version. Would be really interested in a video covering undervolting CPU and overclocking GPU. I have been able to hit close to 22,000 in Timespy with a only a 115mv underclock and would love to optimize further with the GPU.
got the same laptop. But i have a problem, during cyberpunk the CPU only goes to 1.8ghz??? I'm in performance mode.
what are the temperatures in games on your legion? And how much tdp does the video card produce in games? In general, are you happy with the laptop? I used to have a 5 pro with an i7 11800h rtx 3070, now I’m thinking of switching to a pro 7 with an rtx 4090, do you think I won’t regret it? Laptop is only needed for gaming
I've been using this laptop for a month now and it performs like my i7 10700k RTX 3090 desktop. The laptop has a program where you can adjust the TDP of the GPU. Max TDP is 175w and it reaches about 74-78c in games like Cyberpunk 100% ray tracing maxed. The CPU reaches 90-100c but you can set the max temp of the CPU in the lenovo legion program. I set it for 85c and lose only 1fps. Amazing laptop. Only problem is it's a bit heavy.
@@user-xt6cs4xl6y
Hey Gizmo, are you stilling going to do another live stream/video on undervolting/overclocking this Pro 7i?
Waiting for the tuning livestream.
Just for the record, I'm trying all sorts of ways to get into the advanced bios to simply enable the XMP profile and do a mild undervolt, but it seems impossible with the latest bios version
U don’t need to go into advanced bios to undervolt
Just got my Lenovo 7i Pro 4090 a couple days ago. Pretty darn impressed so far. But that's because I'm coming from a Dell x17 so I expected nothing less. Thermals are amazing. This thing runs really cool and quiet and blows away Dell's useless cooling. Noise at full blast is also not too bad. The performance so far has been great and the laptop looks great. As mentioned the screen is somewhat lacking compared to others that are priced many hundreds more. Ideally, at this price point I just want everything. I don't see the point of trying to save a few hundred on a premium loaded laptop. Just give me everything. 17in or 18in screen, metal everything(don't care if it weighs 10lbs because I workout), better ports, bio metric security, and even though I likely don't need it but I just want 64GBs of RAM because you never know........
For this price you're getting incredible performance and incredible value so no complaints so far at this price point.

@user-xt6cs4xl6y I would recommend it. I don't play a lot of games but as far as I can tell the temperatures range around 65C to 70ish at the highest setting for Call of duty. About half what you would get with a Dell with half the performance.
Please post an updated video tweaking bios and undervolts
Just ordered this laptop with a 4090, its on sale right now for 2700. Have you made the video on the undervolting process? I was really interested in that.
2499 Dec 24 2023
Costco is selling the Legion Pro 7i for 2499 right now. 32 gb ram, 2 tb, but only 4080: 12gb.
For those unaware, it’s very likely you will receive slightly lower performance in hybrid mode due to how Optimus works. Essentially, the dGPU still renders the image, but then it hands it off to the iGPU which in turn displays it. Running in dGPU mode will force the 4090 to render AND display. It will literally turn off the iGPU at that point.
Later benchmarks and updates to drivers will demonstrate this.
Also, use performance mode if it’s going to be plugged in. There really isn’t a reason not to. It will automatically kick back to Balanced/auto mode when on battery.
Hey heads up, core isolation appears to cause performance issues with warzone so if you disable that setting in windows defender you should see noticeable performance increases. I think core isolation makes the game run on the E cores only?
Core isolation makes Windows run in a secure container to prevent exploits, but up to 25% performance hit. Microsoft turned it on in 11 by default for security.
@@rayw8252 makes a big difference to performance and Sick of defender doing 4 to 5 scans every startup too

Hi, what kind of a power cord was given to you? 3 pin c13 or c15?
Great content and thanks for the detailed review! But when testing it, do you think that when typing the keyboard flex is noticeable? Or is it Negligible?
Very minimal flex. Hardly any.
Around the WASD area there is massive flex on mine and many others on Reddit.

Great review! The best channel in this subject, I’m between the scar 16 and this, but I don’t know if the mini led display is worth the $800 difference, and the coil whine scares me. Keep bringing this great content!

If it only had a version with a better display for a bit more to pay, I would instantly buy it. But they cheaped out so hard this year ;(

@@chayanmitra5486 yes, Legion laps have the best combination of cooling, performance and mobility (legion 7 with size of 16 in has comparable performance with 17 or 18 inch laps from other brands)
Does the thunderbolt 4 port support power delivery (USB C port at the left of the laptop)? My laptop would not charge when I connect USB C cable (through Monitor that support up to 65w) to the USB C port at the left side of the laptop. It works fine with the UBS C port at the back of the laptop (beside the ethernet port).
Jarrod's review mentioned the TB port on the left does not support PD... only the port on the rear supports PD.
Can only get 115-120 on my legion 7i in the cyberpunk bench. Anything specific you did to boost performance? It seems you left everything stock. Maybe you just won the lottery lol.
How is the backlight bleeding?
I've noticed that the battery drains when I use the performance mode for gaming on this laptop. Of course it is being connected to the original 330w charger. I'm wondering if you've experienced the same issue because I think there is an issue with my device.
I think this is a common problem with Legion pro 7i, and I see many people reporting this problem. I have returned it for this reason
Unfortunately, they didn't change or refund. They just told me that it's not a problem and battery power borrowing is a method to help the system under heavy load. To me, this is not acceptable though! The CPU and GPU wattage under the heaviest possible load must not be more than the laptop input power, otherwise, the machine must be equipped with a higher wattage charger! I'm really disappointed and I don't know what to do 😔

İs it better than msi raider ge78hx 14vhg?
I bought this laptop this week and have had nothing but issues. Running hdmi 2.1 48gbps 3m cable out to a 75inch Sony TV. There is no audio at 120hz 4k. It sometimes plays audio at startup then fails everytime.
I've tried a fresh windows install, updated bios and gfx drivers, tried changed cables, lengths of hdmi 2.1 cables. Disabling non essential audio outputs and the issue remains.
Very disappointed in this as I have a 4 year old XMG Fusion 15 1660ti that manages to do the same task with audio all the time.
I would strongly advise avoiding this laptop if you wish to use it as a media centre for a large TV with 120hz gaming at 4k in mind. I've returned mine for testing hoping to get a refund.
Asus or Lenovo? 😮💨 pleaes suggest
Does this laptop support ram faster than 5600?

Idk how you are getting it to boost clock to 175. Mine hits that LIM POWER at ~164.
Are you in custom mode? I could not get it to do 175W in custom mode. Performance mode woth gpu OC got me the best results
I must say I do not like Lenovo Legion design at all, but I ended up buying one (not this year though) and I must admit that amazing cooling, performance, display is phenomenal and fans are like a wind sometimes, but nothing which would bother me at all. Being a 16" display, wouldn't it be better to run games in FHD for higher refresh rates? I don't believe there would be a visible difference between QHD and FHD when gaming aside from better refresh rates on the FHD at that screen size. Please correct me if I'm wrong!
If you have good eyesight, you can see the difference, but I would say it is not a huge visual difference for most people
16" QHD gives you 189ppi whereas FHD gives you 138ppi. From research I've gathered online about HD gaming, 90 ppi is baseline and 140 ppi is optimal.
RTINGS is saying top 5 gaming monitors as of October 2023 are as follows.
alienware 25" ips fhd 88 ppi
asus 27" oled qhd 109 ppi
samsung 32" va uhd 137 ppi
alienware 34" qd-oled qhd+ 109 ppi
samsung 49" qd-oled qhd 109 ppi
most sites I'm seeing are saying the 32" 4k monitor is hands down the best monitor for gaming.
In the case of the lenovo pro7i gen 8. By running it in FHD and you actually get to use the 240hz refresh rate more consistently and in most cases probably locked.
It would be interesting to see two lenovos side by side, one running qhd and the other running fhd both max performance w/ optimization to see which looks better.

The AI setting needs more gameplay. It gets better with time. I have used this and the more you play the more it learns how to configure and it improves. A first run isnt a fair comparison. FYI for those buying this.
Interesting take. Could be right. I had assumed the AI has been pre trained for optimal balance of CPU/GPU, but maybe it needs to experiment and learn after the fact. The thing is though that custom mode just will have higher power limits than what the AI mode can probably ever achieve since it will have lower power limits.
Fan Noise? Generally speaking, how did it sound under load? I could hear it in the background in the video. Some laptops have a loud fan, but its not as 'noticable' based on the frequency of the noise produced... (oh, and just subscrived)
This one is pretty reasonable on Fan Noise. It can run pretty well in Quiet mode, and the normal working fans in performance mode are loud, but not terrible. Max fan mode is loud though.

It's a long post but I really do need your help Gizmo, if you have some time at any point.
For the Legion I would have been happy not to upgrade to a 17 inch+ which was originally the plan, as my 2021 11th gen 3080 has been amazing (besides a lot of white bleed in dark content). Max all turbo clock sustained at all times and never a throttle, 150 watt on GPU easily and never over 70 degrees. It's nuts for what it was. But 1980HK long in the tooth, and I notice with games like spiderman, when I tried a 2022 GT77 with just a 3070ti(!) but the 12900HX, I would get at least 40% percent FPS higher stable FPS. And more games will move towards smashing the cpu as well as the gpu as time goes on, IMO. So I have been looking all year to upgrade and everything is lacking somewhere for me and I don't know what to do.
The new Legion 7i loses all forms of integrated windows hello which 2022 had, and no lights on ports anymore is crazy. But the plastic touch pad is the biggest sin as I am a HEAVY touchpad user for all uses bar gaming (I come from macbooks prior to 2020, since around 2005 so 15 years).
I also would have preferred 4K this year with real HDR and that doesn't leave many options but Razer 16 or MSI GT77. The latter has no G-Sync which REALLY bothers me and apparently the screen is slow and has bad ghosting/response times. Power limits on the 16" Razer *whilst* Gpu is loaded are terrible and not suitable for me overall. Same with 18". I love how easy Razers are to open, I love the good speakers in the 18 and the port selection, and even the 18" has a good IPS HDR 500 nit that is ultra fast 3ms average RT, but I can't get past the wattage thing. If they upped it to have 75 watts like the GE78 for example, when GPU loaded, I'd get one and that would be it, despite having an experience with Razer support in 2021 that I will never forget. Mind numbing. The worst EVER. But that's another story. I did say never again back then, but I've softened a bit.
Wants: It has to be a 4090 - non negotiable, and minimum 13900HX, I must have USB 4 or thunderbolt as I run a firecuda gaming dock with an internal 4TB NVME, 4TB HDD and 5 USB A Gen 2 hub on it. My audio interface is thunderbolt 4 so there's that too.
I don't want to lose HDR, even the Dolby vision of the Lenovo makes a massive difference in Netflix, all the cloudy compression artefacts in dark scenes are gone. So Alienware out this year with 300 nits. Asus out cause no secondary F key lighting and I use F keys heavily in a dim room for my music production. Asus' lack of all windows hello is off-putting also for the near 7K price here in Australia (Strix Scar 18, 64gb, 1TB, 4090, 13980HX - not even 2TB storage LOL!).
Acer no options for 2023 in OZ yet. Same with Omen but that doesn't look that great.
MSI GE78HX was so close but no G-Sync and 400 nits max.
If Alienware had good speakers and a bright 4K screen, that would have been the end of it, as their support for me have been second to none in all past experience. But they don't.
If Lenovo hadn't gone to the chopping block, that would have been a contender too, but they did, so it isn't.
Things about GT77 that piss me off are 720P cam and UHS 1 sd card (max 100mb/s, more like 85 real world) in a near 10K AUD laptop. That's stupid.
And MSI's refusal to pay the G-Sync bios unlock fee, as the screens have the adaptive sync stuff already there, the GT77 has 48hz-144hz so all g-sync would do is add advanced optimus and Nvidia's software control for the VESA sync (it's not hardware G-Sync after all) which lets it work with all Graphic API in DGPU mode unlike the windows/Intel Adaptive sync.
Why they won't do it is anyone's guess and the most expensive gaming laptop in the world that doesn't have it. It's kind of a piss take..
But even if I get past that (I care mostly about G-Sync for 100% cycle accurate retro emulation for systems which are not precisely 60HZ, and old arcade games) and work around it by using direct X in Retroarch instead of Vulkan or Open GL, and playing full screen instead of windowed so the Intel adaptive sync works (with optimus enabled of course), I don't know if I can get past the screen response time.
With what you have read, what do you think? I found a GT77 with 4TB, win 11 pro and 64GB ram factory ready to deliver today if I want it for 30% discount. Is that really my best bet this year? is there anything on the horizon? Do you think Razer will increase cpu wattage with a bios fix? Note this is not optional as in my video editing and audio productions with video editing I need maximum cpu clocks, so it's not just for show for me.
Oh, there is the Clevo, but of course I can't find a single review on it. 500 nits 4K 144hz WITH G-sync, 64GB ram, 13900HX, 4090, 17". Claims 330W of sustained cooling but I don't believe it and without a review anywhere there's no proof, and Jarrod rejected one from the Australian reseller even though they helped him start his channel (why I don't sub to him anymore).
On paper, it is IT, every single feature I want, all secondary functions backlit, 17", 4K, G-Sync, 1080P webcam WITH windows hello, etc. It's all there. But have no idea how loud it is and what performance is like.
Sigh!
I don't think the RUclipsr is going to comment... I'd ask r/laptop or any unbiased laptop reddit...
@@starsonist I am waiting on a review at ownordisown channel of a particular laptop he is literally reviewing as a favour to me, he had one sent.
It has everything I want, 500 nit 4K 144 hz g sync screen, 13900HX, 4090, 1080P cam with Windows Hello IR, Thunderbolt. It's a Clevo chassis that a few OEM are using so the review is relevant anywhere that uses the same chassis. Look out for it this week apparently.
He said it's a nice ;laptop and I will like it but I need to watch the full review to make up my mind, so just waiting on that. if I don't like it, I will get either the Razer 18 with 4090 or the GT77 with 4090 and just make do without G-Sync on the latter. The good thing with the GT77 is the big chain retailer that has the best price for it here has exclusive 64gb ram whereas all other stores have 32. It also has 2x2TB SSD so I will simply never need to open it to upgrade it. With the Razer I will have to add a second drive and upgrade the ram, so, food for thought. I think maybe I can live without G-Sync and use windows VRR through Intel driver when using optimus mode, and I am liking the idea of the GT77 cause it has both fingerprint sensor and IR, but also has mechanical KB, numeric keypad, and proper HDR1000 but absolutely no bleed cause it's mini led. I am so sick and tired of every laptop I bought having crazy bleed, even my 2021 lenovo legion pro 7.
There are no gaming laptops with high performance OLED this year, so, not an option. Maybe we will see a 17 or 18" OLED next year with 240hz. That would be amazing.
@@teddym2808 Thanks for the clarity. I'm planning to buy one of these myself, got scammed out of the 3070, 32GB acer nitro 5. thermals suck and they throttle so bad, can't even underclock because intel doesn't like you messing with the cpus on the H models...
@@starsonist Sorry to hear that. One thing I know is that you can definitely undervolt on the Razer and MSI (advanced bios shortcut needed). In fact MSI makes it so easy to disable E cores, or some E cores for example. For me, I will be disabling 8 so the laptop has more power devoted to 16 cores rather than 24. I do not need 24 cores for what I do LOL.
@@teddym2808 Does Legion have a good bios from what you've experienced? Acer Nitro 5 bios sucks. They only give you one option, and that's to change the GPU being displayed...
My legion 5 sucks cuz the fan is always on when playing games like league of legends
These games you will likely get more than 300 FPS and those FPS loads on the cpu rather than the GPU so it make the cpu overheating which causing the fans to spin loudly try locking the fps.

Still broken charging ports.
what??
@@franciscovalderrama3456 charging ports often get loose and don’t charge. Same design since a lot of years. My
Legion had to get soldered a new one.

Uff every laptop has many flaws....😢
Thanks for the info
1 gb ethernet !! Nope ...
There is no reason for those stutters and dips on a $3000 laptop.
2nd
plastic everywhere. there's no doubt last year legion 7 is the very good build quality and PREMIUM look than this year model.
Reporting on your warzone issue: Your gpu is barely using 35% of its power, assuming it uses 100% power. 100 fps + 65% = 165Fps minimum
There is an issue with the game, Windows, Or it could be a slow ram. even my 3070 5800H is having higher fps than this 4090 laptop in warzone
