Cheers for the guide and reviews. For best results with this laptop I can say 100% positively to turn off "CPU to GPU Dynamic Boost" as it causes micro-stutter in numerous games. That goes for all 4080 Intel laptops from what I've learned. Also go into the bios and enable e-core parking with FN + K, e-cores are causing my unit to occasionally stutter on youtube videos where the sound goes horrible for like .1 second as well as sometimes desktop icons become unclickable among other suspect behaviors that seemingly all went away with e-core parking.
I've got the KWCN38WW update (vs the 32WW you're showing) and it looks like they may have done away the CPU overclocking options. There are only a couple sliders for the GPU.
Hmm interesting, I was just messing with that setting last night, I have the AMD variant but I wasn’t really understanding why at 75w is the threshold for cpu to gpu dynamic boost. I didn’t experience micro stuttering at all but that could be because AMD can keep clocks running high with lower power then Intel maybe? Idk tbh I think I would preferred the Intel version. I will say I’ve had zero issues with thermals with the 7945hx to my surprise it actually runs cool as hell.
For everyone here, the AMD Lenovo Legion 7 doesn't have PBO or CPU overclocking. You can enable the extreme setting in the bios and in vantage there is the GPU overclocking same as with the Intel model. A little bit of a shame that there isn't options on the CPU but that might be AMD more than Lenovo stopping it from happening. Either way with a 4090 this laptop is a beast in games!!
just overclocking the GPU from the Lenovo software, 215 MHz boost. measured it a few times. digging it! Can't wait to see what I get undervolting the CPU!
Great job. especially on the cpu. These intel laptops are known for having poor 1% lows in games due to power hungry cpu not getting enough watts when the gpu is active. Glad to see this issue alleviated by undervolting.
Thanks man! Haven’t touched the settings much since I was mainly gaming on my desktop 4090 in my room, and the laptop is mainly for playing sim racing connected to a 32:9 monitor and the default is already plenty enough. Recently Wukong came out and connected this 4090 laptop to my 83” OLED in my living room, and man, using your settings with my Llano cooler just boosted performance so much!!!! Thank you!!!!!
The best results I have achieved are: - Undervolt with Throttlestop, - 0.1 on CPU core and - 0.08 on p cores and e cores. Throttlestop is better than lenovo Vantage as you can undervolt p cores as well. Below that I will just get crashes - GPU overclock of +200 core / +500 memory with MSI afterburner. - I am getting 31-32k on cinebench and 19700 on Timespy (full fans). Very good improvement vs stock (29 in cinebench and 18500 timespy) Cheers!!
Nice! Are you on Custom Thermal mode in Lenovo Vantage with full speed fans? Also do you have the CPU Overclock option in Vantage ON (green) for 5.6ghz?
100 percent yea you can almost any Intel laptop this will work just works a little better on the 4090 cause it’s cpu bottlenecked in some games but you will still see improvements every cpu is different silicon lottery
11:39 - 11:43 what happened there? That exact part is what many people are having problems with, Vantage not being able to actually find and download the driver it requires for unlocking CPU overclocking. What happened during that 2 minute cut? Where did you find the actual driver Vantage needs? It is not the one on Lenovo's website. I have spent over 30 minutes trying to find a solution now, please share!! 🙏
I also had this problem - what fixed it for me was just restarting my computer a couple of times, and ALSO - installing a patch to Game Driver (I dont remember the specific name, but its the one Vantage is using to be able to undervolt). Ive done it through Vantage updates tab - it seems like it has to be done manually, because Vantage has problem with it. Hope it helps! (you can download this driver through Lenovo site)
Hey there! In the latest bios update for the legion 7 AMD, they've added the option to CPU overclock. Do you have a means to do the same breakdown as you've done for the intel 7i?
after buying and returning quite a few 4090 laptops, legion pro 7i AMD 4090 is the best, not just value, the best overall. thanks for the video for making it even better for me.
will the same vantage setting work for the 4080? I'm not so much looking for more performance increase as just running the laptop cooler without losing performance? thanks for the video
Love the video. I have a question. What temp is your cpu at idle? mines is between 50 and 65, usually around 60 on the table without the Iets. Is that normal?
I have the 4070 variant and got a stable overclock of +180mhz gpu and +360mhz vram. The performance jump is insane. Like literally insane. Forza Horizon 5 in extreme graphics mode @ 2k native resolution goes from 20fps to 120fps. Presumably this is because I run out of VRAM that the overclocking seems to handle for some strange reason. But the performance increase is freaking huge. I'm probably getting more fps than a stock 4080.
Gizmo can you do a legion pro 7 (non I) with the AMD cpu? I just bought one with a 4080 32gb of ram, ram speeds are 5200 on amd compared to 5600 on Intel but I have a feeling I can get the AMD mem controller to push 5600 easily unless it’s a limitation from their IF.
I just picked up my Legion Pro 7i and I'm curious as to what the risks are to Undervolting and Overclocking it using your methods? Is this something I should do or am I taking a big risk?
I can OC my GP66 memory like +1800mhz but is that even improving performance at that point ? I heard boosting the memory over ~10% (700 in my case ) will end up in calculating artifacts back to normal is that true and might reduce performance?
thanks a lot for your responses 🙏 , still I have one more question , when im putting balanced mode wich is the recommended plan from win , it gaves me the best results, less temp ans less noise abd more fps unlike in lenovo software the balance +ai mode or performance mode that's giving me 12c more on temp , fps slightly better almost the same and the fan are noise , how it can be ?
Why am I not getting sustained 140w on stock? I am getting 78.6w on average with peak being the 165w and the current typically at 109w. My score was 26016 running on performance. Basically question would be why did i throttle so badly down to 109w when only my core 5 hit up to 97w max ? Edit: Found out why his and mine were different scores! Important if you don't know what that performance switch does! In the bios, dude didn't know what that performance mode setting was. It was to allow you to have a sustained long term tpl of 140w, that's why he was getting 29000+ vs my 26000+ in r23. He had already had it switched on extreme before hand, and that's not by default. He turned it on not knowing what it did. But i'll give him credit for making this video, otherwise I may have never known why my laptop never goes at full power. So you choose in the bios what you want. Normal or extreme performance mode. That's what that switch is for. It caps your long term TPL! So I answered if there's a difference? 26000+ vs 29000+ on The Lenovo Legion Pro, huge difference!! Lol, he was talking like it was nothing important!
I ended up going with the pro 7 (AMD variant) from Lenovo website, it trades blows with the 13980hx and my available options were the 13900hx or 7945hx, so based off those choices and the AMD variant being $200 cheaper, and should out perform the 13900hx, I got it with a 4080 and 32gb of ddr5 5200mhz (guess that was the max speed for the AMD variant, Intel was 5600mhz) don’t think it will make much difference as I’m sure I can mess with the bios/ ram timings and can get the IF to support higher speeds but I guess I’ll find out. I just had the 13900hx ordered and I called to cancel and get the 7945hx variant, just sucks there isn’t as much software like Intel xtu and all the stuff. I think I can use Ryzen masters with the 7945hx it also has an 80mb cache but that is because of the split ccd I believe each ccd has 40mb cache, but regardless it still has more L3 cache, then the Intel from what I researched. Seems more efficient, lower power levels to achieve same clock speeds should lead to lower temps. I’m super stoked to get this beast,
The AMD variant crushes the Intel variant in multicore, and is only like 150 points behind in single core. They both boost to 5.4 and AMD always gets faster with a modest undervolt and I’ll be doing that with 80-110w instead of 130-170w lol. I dunno seems to me like the smarter cpu, I am worried about the AMD chip throttling if they only give it that 95c throttle limit, while Intel let’s it get to 100-105c before throttling. I have yet to see someone do a legion pro 7 vs pro 7i with same config, maybe you can make a video out of it.
@@rezamajidizavie oh so also the clocks go above 5.4ghz btw, I’ve seen em get to 5.45 without enabling overclocking in the bios, you can push it to 5.65 with the bios overclock, you can change PBO settings and how long it lasts, and how much is pushes, but I only saw a small UV selection it was a +\- and the values are 1-5, I dunno if that is -1mv or if the 5 is actually a .5mv undervolt or if it’s a .05 it really isn’t that clear but .05 is like nothing so I’d imagine it’s 10-50 on those values, and you can do a 10-50mv or .1 to .5v UV through the bios. That part was confusing as hell so I’d rather just use software. I’m gonna see if this unlocked cpu let’s me download Ryzen master so I don’t have to use some third party utility, like xtu. That being said I have an Alienware m16 with the same exact specs just 16gb ddr5 and just the Intel variant (still in the box too, caught it on sale, it’s back to $2700 now but I’d sell it for cheaper 😉), and I’d like to see if it offers a wider array of tuning with the Intel chips besides some power sliders and a small (and hard to understand) bios undervolt with the AMD cpu. If Lenovo won’t let me UV the AMD cpu more, I’d almost certainly go with the Intel one cuz we have seen you have full control of that aspect of the cpu with Intel.
I am Doing after a lot of testing on my Dell G16 7630 with a RTX 4070 and 130W (Stock Voltage is 0.0940 and Stock Clock is 2350Mhz): For max Performance: 2600Mhz at around 100W with 0.0940V and an average of 71-72°C and 8400Mhz on the Memory - is it good? For max STOCK Performance: 2445Mhz at around 85W with 0.875V and an average of 70° C and 8400Mhz on the Memory - is it good? Fans are spinning always in Auto-Mode which is fine for me and try to hold the GPU around 70°C.
Can I undervolt my CPU and GPU and later turn to Balanced mode or Quiet mode to maybe preserve power or keep laptop quiet? If needed. It will mostly be plugged in but on occasion it will be transported with me while I work. Im a home health nurse. Thnaks guys.
Originally, you could only undervolt via the bios settings, but I believe if you update the bios and turn off undervolt protection you can use throttlestop now
I hope the Lenovo software gives me this type of customization in their software with the AMD variant, I’d imagine it will with just different power levels and boost times I believe you can increase the PBO to last longer just like you can with Intel turbo mode. Guess I’ll find out. Is that something you know?
Yes, it can run it. But optimal resolution and FPS may not be hit in every game, but many of them, yes. Think of the laptop 4090 as a desktop RTX 3090 with less vram.
I can't understand why undervolting isn't lowering temps anymore... I remember Dave2D posting a video saiung that undervolting really lowers the temps.
Good day! I 'm using previous years legion pro with RTX3080Ti. Have you ever experienced battery % constantly dropping even below 50% while gaming while the AC adapter is plugged in? I used your guide to undervolt my laptop but the problem still persists. Any idea what could be causing it?
I've been having a nughtmare trying to get my samsung external monitor detect this laptop it detects it the first time, but after about 15 minutes or anytime after, my monitor can not detect this laptop! Please reply: So i did this on the same laptop as you but with the 4070 and my fps in warzone is around 100 fps on low settings, is this normal? am i doing something wrong?
To start with his GPU is much more powerful and has a lot better clock speeds!! So obviously, i would think, you shouldnt copy paste his settings!!!! Its two very different tiers! Look for a 3070mobile overclock instead. Dont think its gonna help though.

did u end up doing it? have the same laptop since a week ago and also using this vid as a guide to get my cpu undervolted as its getting rlly hot in a certain game, like reaching 100 degrees celcius. did ur values kind off match the ones the vid used?

I'm talking about the stats showing in blue, green, and orange letters that you are using to help dial in your settings. Sorry, it's probably a dumb question, and it is quite possible you covered it and I missed it.
Hey. Thanks the Video. Somehow my GPU only reaches around 150watts in Timespy but reaches up to 175watts in Furmark. Anyone knows what causes this problem?
I was annoyed at fan profiles only being available in custom mode But then noticed in custom mode you can use revert to either balanced or performance or actual custom you've chosen and apply your own fan curve Therefore in custom actually having it reset to performance mode but full fans if wanted at the same time Easier to understand if you just look And try its confusing to explain

Man, sadly I can't undervolt my 7i, I guess 😢 After some researching, I found out that I'd only be able to undervolt it if I disable VIrtual Machine and some other feature that might be getting in the way (undervolting doesn't even show on BIOS mode). As a developer, I use WSL to work, so I did try to uncheck VM, but WSL died 🫠 Is there any other way for me to undervolt the 7i?

For max Performance:
2600Mhz at around 100W with 0.0940V and an average of 71-72°C and 8400Mhz on the Memory - is it good?
For max STOCK Performance:
2445Mhz at around 85W with 0.875V and an average of 70° C and 8400Mhz on the Memory - is it good?
Fans are spinning always in Auto-Mode which is fine for me and try to hold the GPU around 70°C.
Has anyone found any significant battery life difference with these settings? Has anyone ran tests on it?

Good day, have you tried to undervolt processor on Strix 18 ?Do you know what software is safe to use for that model?
Originally, you could only undervolt via the bios settings, but I believe if you update the bios and turn off undervolt protection you can use throttlestop now
I hope the Lenovo software gives me this type of customization in their software with the AMD variant, I’d imagine it will with just different power levels and boost times I believe you can increase the PBO to last longer just like you can with Intel turbo mode. Guess I’ll find out. Is that something you know?

I wonder if this laptop can runs a VR Pimax Crystal!! I just have bought one, and want to buy a VR to use in racing games.
Yes, it can run it. But optimal resolution and FPS may not be hit in every game, but many of them, yes. Think of the laptop 4090 as a desktop RTX 3090 with less vram.

I remember Dave2D posting a video saiung that undervolting really lowers the temps.
Because most modern cpus just clock higher to hit the same temps.

Man, sadly I can't undervolt my 7i, I guess 😢
After some researching, I found out that I'd only be able to undervolt it if I disable VIrtual Machine and some other feature that might be getting in the way (undervolting doesn't even show on BIOS mode).
As a developer, I use WSL to work, so I did try to uncheck VM, but WSL died 🫠
Is there any other way for me to undervolt the 7i?
I only wanted to set a cooler clock for the CPU when I'm not gaming, cuz it runs above 40mhz all the time, and it's an unnecessary power consumption.
Maybe try different user profiles?
