Let me give a personal example of what Bjorn is saying. A few years ago, I dropped a $35,000 Solar System into my house. To me it was less because the government supplemented it some but that wasn't free money. I will pay for it in increased taxes over my life. The solar panels reduced my power bills about $150/month. Meaning not including interest, it will take me 237 months (or 20 years) to get my money back. Solar is expensive and it takes money to install to get those small savings over time. I get more energy than I need during the day and sell the rest (about 600 kwh/month) back to the utility coop at 3 cents per kilowatt which they sell to my neighbors for 10 cents. But when it's cloudy/rains or its dark outside (mostly winter), I'm dependent on the utility again. Because I went away from natural gas to an all electric home heating system, my utility bills are higher in the winter than summer. Less hours of sunlight, heat pumps work harder in the night/winter. This is not the simple answer politicians put forth. People need to listen to Bjorn Lomborg. His organization has already done the math.

some live off grid with a 500W inverter and 5 kH/h of storage … but you have to wash your own dishes …
I live in sunny south Africa. It's ridiculously expensive, we still pay our corrupt utility Co R1000 which is about $50 a month and we have to use carefully.
You say you will recover your investment in 20 years. Considering the average life of a solar panel is about 20 years, I'm afraid you've given yourself a whole lot of hassle for nothing...

He is a dane, we are in nature a bit on the humble side, we often dress down, like Bjørn and call eachother by first name and care less about fancy titles, we are a logical species, that like to use better arguments instead of raising our voices or play on emotions.
I do get the impression that he actually thinks it's a load of old bollocks, but when he says 'climate change is real' I think what he actually means is 'let's assume that climate change is real', as he's trying to make his arguments more palatable and more likely to be implemented.
It's a fucking soundbite from Lomborg who is no dummy. "climate change is real" and "climate change" is NOT what we're talking about. He knows that and continues to mis-word, mis-speak, to continue to key-word "climate change" narrative to the ignorant of the world.

It seems to me that no one is willing to truly listen to what the man has to say. What hes saying makes sense and if anything should give hope.
Besides climate change i feel we have a even bigger problem with education systems. If the only thing our education systems manage is creating a room full of morons how can we expect to solve any problems?
Today's teenagers including my otherwise intelligent Grands, have "climate anxiety." Since they are too brainwashed by our educators to look at the science critically, starting with some opposing viewpoints by our most eminent physicists (Happer, Lindzen), geologists (Plimer, Bridgestone), , and academic atmospheric scientists (Curry, Christy), I discuss Lomborg's views on priorities for humanity particularly the less wealthy countries. That appeals to their liberalism and idealism. Tell them about the failed Greenpeace/UN experiment in Sri Lanka. Maybe this post will help some others to widen your views.
@@njb67 there are some exemptions. I remembered an older discussion with bjorn lomborg at perdue university when i wrote the comment above, where a lot of polite young people asked a lot of overall quite good questions. In comparison this university really stands out in a bad way.

Unfortunately for the younger generations this video is a testimony to the naturally missing maturity that corrodes such an important discussion. The young seem to have too much to learn to even comprehend a basic understanding that maturity will eventually bring them. On the other end, I do appreciate Lomborg for being willing to attempt to discuss with such an immature audience.

The analogy of the smoker is not correct for climate change policy !!!
Using the example of a smoker not given up because he hopes research in curing cancer will save him. This fails because cost stoping compared to cost of research is not the same as cost climate policy v cost of research! Climate policy(stop smoking) runs in large numbers eg 5% GDP where as R&D runs into billions.
Zion lights also points out climate policy cost lives, in that poor developing nations are required to stall growth and suffer poverty large populations rather than use natural resources that release carbon!
Any sort of combustion releases CO2. For now, and as far into the future as we can project the amount of CO2 that humans release from where it has been sequestered by plants and animals in the past.
The sad truth is that we are very close to the death point of all life because the concentration of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere is so low
I do bleive that the example (I might be wrong) was more aimed at, that it is hard to make people do somthing they don`t want, even if it is better for them in the long run.
Yes, it doesn't remotely work as an analogy, because a smoker would just give up smoking and be fine, whereas if we gave up fossil fuels we'd go back to the dark ages.

I was having a quiet dinner for two in a Paris restaurant in 2007 discussing climate change with my partner. I had recently read Bjorn’s Skeptical Environmentalist. A woman at a nearby table who had been listening in leaned over and gave me a similar harranging to what we witnessed here and claimed that Bjorn was a dangerous man. Just making the point that there almost 20 years ago climate extremism was already in full swing and it’s obviously got a total grip of western politics now. It will be many years before sane voices can prevail again and then only after our lives and our economies have been totally ruined in the West.
In the meantime, the Earth continues to warm, and will continue long after YOU are gone from this Earth. Have you bred yet? Go ask your descendents.

Not sure I appreciate the girl’s demeanor interviewing Bjorn. She doesn’t have respect for his presence. She’s early in her profession and has no right to speak to him as though they are at the same level. I would rethink having her host or interview someone of the same caliber.
what exactly did you not like about it? I mean I also got the feeling she was not on his side, but at least she did not interrupt him and let him respond to everything. and I prefer hearing harsh question over softball questions.
why should she respect him? he's not a climate scientist and does not know how climate change works in fact all those citations in that book he wrote are from papers that expressly argue against his claims that climate change is no big deal because many of them came forward after he wrote it

Resource depletion is a thing we should be concerned about but just like biodiversity, it's not primarily due to climate change. A tiny portion is, but most stems from our insatiable desire to be richer. Climate change is not the cause, its a side effect of the same root cause.
