I think the most use I would get out of it if I were to get it would be for the instant creativity syndrome. It would be nice to have for those times you get an idea but you don't have a computer or laptop handy you could just use that with the speaker and record chords, grooves or leads to be used later when you're in an actual studio setting.

@Angelina Ramos true... there's actually so many times I steer away from my studio room just because I know I'll get too involved and all I want to do is put down a simple melody for later. Lol
@@ianmuessig I would probably just use my phone for reference. Haha and then use a sound I actually like from my computer. Lol

I use my iPhone and an Orba but will be using this to learn chords and how the choices correlate. Music is such a trip, did you take any formal courses on the subject?
Brought one second hand for a older pc and software this video convinced me to pull the trigger, thank you for revisiting
I bought one of these for my 3 year old son and he loves it. I was also surprised how much fun I have with it. Never used an MKP before it and I also like how easy they are to setup. I can definitely see why you use them. So simple and to the point which is making music! My buddy also bought one recently for a looping setting without PC. I completely agree with this video.
The MPK Mini Play plays well with the MPC Live 2. The effects, keygroups, and now with the 2.10 new plugins, it makes them a great portable duo. I just throw those 2 in my backpack and I’m good.
Great to know cause I think that will be the set up soon. For now I got a Sp404a and may soon get MPK Mini Play.
Although Novation Circuit sounds like better combo, just higher price bracket

I find my Mini Play very versatile. O can hook it up to my Yamaha keyboard for additional sounds, and plug both my Yamaha and Akai into my desktop working off the DAW for projects at my workstation. Or if I'm just playing around with a new tune I can sit on my couch as a standalone or plug it into my laptop. I was staying in hotel for a few weeks and took my Akai and laptop with me for relaxing in the evenings, I would never be able to take my full size keyboard everywhere. Such a great tool for the money.
This thing is lacking in alot of ways.. but i honestly just wanted something with all these options that i didn't need to have plugged into a computer or external speakers... seems the market is lacking on stuff like this... so i got it, ill end up keeping it, its fun of nothing else.. wish it had at least 32keys tho... that would be ultimate... lets get them to make a 32-37 key one! Power to the people! Haha
It will fit in my backpack which is a bonus ,so even when I haven’t got my electric guitar I can compose , practice drums , come up with riffs etc

I love that 80s electric piano sound like a DX7 , I’ve got the MPK mini play 3 arriving tomorrow , to use as a sketch pad with my electric guitar
I bought one of the mk3 versions to (re)learn piano and chording to play along with music and have all of these built in sounds to get my feet wet in music production. I wanted something stand alone that I could also introduce my kids to keyboards and drum rhythms. I didn’t want to have to plug in to anything so for a used version for $115 I was pretty happy. And then if I want to progress further, I can get a full keyboard and use this still as a synth in a worship setting or for simple beats on music.
To be good you need practice, practice and practice, and that mini play is really beautiful for that
The build in sounds sound pretty good to me. Not too cheesy. Especially for a cheap standalone keyboard. Love the review buddy. I just ordered one!
I ordered the MPK mini a few weeks ago. I just sent it back this morning. I found it a little too toyish. The keybed was pretty spunggy.. More so the black keys. Velocity was a big problem as well. The pads were ok, when used at 127. Knobs are also sufficient. I think its deff a great starter midi controller for a more of a beginner . I guess I'm use to weighted full sized 88key synths/workstations. That being said... I love your content brother!
This is a keyboard for techno. I'm having so much fun playing chords a dropping beats on top of it. Plus you can play microtonal melodies with keys and the knob in the corner. I started playing with mine only recently and the more I learn what it can do, the more out-there the possibilities are.
But if you only listen to western music you might want to invest into something that will bring you closer to a recording studio. Still more than decent for the price.
11:07 __pro tip: if u plug your 404 up to another 404 + a LT w/ FL Studio ...your almost as powerful as Skrillex, Nine Inch Nails, The Prodigy etc ...all depends on your experimention, dedication and patience ...I was literally programming 4 samplers to talk back and forth to each other ...sky's the limit ...until my pads got stuck 😒

It is not for everyone. But it is the best thing for me. It is so convenient that I can just play anytime, anywhere. This was what got me to learn playing keyboard. I imagine when I am on holiday, I would take it with me.
They’re going to release an updated version sometime in the near future. Might be worth holding off for a few weeks.

Even though the internal sounds might not be to your liking it comes with mini grand, velvet, and hybrid plugins and those are pretty good.
I wonder are we allow to customize sounds and replace the building sounds? Or custom sounds only functions on midi and we cannot save our own sounds to the keyboard itself.

Is onboard (inbuilt) bass sounds are good for bass guitar? As I wanna use it only especially for bass as I use korg Krome for primary one for live programs. This small keyboard will give freedom from burdening two big keyboards if it is good for the bass parts.

I was tempted by the original Mini Play but ended up buying the Mini MK3 because of the pads & better keybed. Looks like they've included those in the new Play so might be tempted. Especially if they've improved the built-in drums!
How do you know they have included the better pads in the new play? Do you know when it will be released? Or how I can find this information?
...the endless encoders is what sets the mini mk3 apart from the mini play.
I'm literally in the market for this because I dont always wanna play while bringing my iPad everywhere... hopefully the 2nd version will come out soon :D
One of the reason I love it is the cheesy sounds. Run through pedals and love have the drum pads with kits. I hope the new one has dedicated midi out.

Lovely video. I wana know if there is a midi controller with inbuilt sounds and full size keys. I am a musician and i wont like to get accustomed to mini keys. It disturbs my flow
I wish AKAI would add the Play features to their MPK 249 and MPK 261 keyboard. That would be perfect for me. For now I can only think of digital pianos that can also used as a midi keyboard.
Wow I never new that midi had speakers and it's own sound selection. And I must admit that sounds aren't that bad.
Still I just enjoy the work flow my launchkey mk3 bring the my DAW. Ableton of course.

It was my first midi and I pretty much became the artist I am on this midi. Never even figured out how to map the midi with the software but I might dig it up and try and use it with my new found dawlessness

@@SunnsKitchen hmm I’m tryna remember. It was 5 yrs ago so bear with me. I downloaded the necessary software that I needed to, and the akai daw that I never used, opened the map and tweaked around aimlessly, opened logic and selected a pad and it just worked

Oh oh bro! I just found out they are coming out with a mpk mini PLAY MK3! looks like the speaker is bigger and has less knobs lol hopefully its better... might return this mini play...
thank you, I wonder if there are any other midi keyboards that can be connected directly to a loop etc without a computer - sometimes you don't want the computer and you just want to mess around on the sofa, you can't do that with the whole setup

The Korg Triton Taktile is aittle more but it has better sounds, full size keys, a kaoss pad and chord presets for the pads. Not as editable but pretty killer for a compact controller.

Is there really nothing else besides the akai? Like a midi controller with a headphone jack with drum pads, and maybe a sampler to layer the instrument. I’d really love to know if anyone has any recommends
It would be incredibly cool if the drum sounds could be changed.
i feel like its still pointless. if you dont want to carry a computer around you can just plug it into your phone and a mini speaker. i purchased the mini play and its speaker sounded like straight garbage. idk if i was using it wrong but i returned it

Could this be linked to other synthesizers and posted further I have two korg synth pads a zoom and two synthesizers I am trying to figure how to link all it should I play all stand alone or do I need to focus on using a recording software I have ableton but struggle with the best route I don’t use my ableton
Can you also plug this into your laptop and use the same way as a the Mini? Also, if you create something on the play, can you then put that into your laptop with different tracks?

Tu peux connecter la sortie audio du mpk a ton Mac avec un cable jack 3.5mm et l'enregistrer sur une piste audio. Peut-être même qu'il y a une fonction "audio trough USB", dans quel cas il faudrait sélectionner le mpk comme entrée sur garageband et non le port casque,

Yes, you need an cable 3,5 mm Mini to 6,3 mm or an Adapter

nope. i've got both the mini play and the mk3 and a set of 8 endless encoders as on the mpk mk3 is sooo much better than a smaller set of non-endless potentiometers as on the mini play (yes, as on the mini play mk3 as well), that built in sounds and a speaker pales in comparison.
A new one coming in March of this year i am seeing.

The mini play does not have a sequencer though correct? That was the strongest point i thought you made in the review of it and i didn't hear you touch on that in this video...
If it had a basic looper/sequencer it would sell like crazy
correct no sequencer, but what I heard from most people, is a lot of uses that don't involve any type of sequencer

Akai makes good controler, problem is that you have to litteraly SMASH the pad to make it works.
Novation is way better.

So I bought one for my son. And no bull we both found it a bit challenging being his first time using this type of beat machine for lack of better terms. So my question now is 1 year later should he keep it or sell and Trade for something better or simpler to run or learn it? I get the on the move creativity you guys spoke on and that’s why I bought it and a laptop cause he was getting older and curfew stepped up so I figure have something to do while being on ya own and he likes music so Any help in making next decision would help.

Can you suggest other better alternatives to the AKAI MPK MINI PLAY (MIDI with speaker & instrument sounds)? Since it's pretty dated and has some flaws to be improved (keys, drumpads etc)
I don't know if it's better but I've using an Arturia minilab mk2 for 2 years and didn't have issues besides some things that got solved via software updates
For the money and size it's hard to get a more versatile device!

I just bought one of these used, and the internal sounds and the headphone jack produce no sound. I'm wondering if anyone else has had this issue. I took it apart and didn't see anything obvious. I find it odd that both don't work. I don't care about the speaker as it looks really tiny but it would be nice to have the headphone jack working. Any ideas of what I could try? Like a factory reset, or some setting in the editor software?

I am very new to playing live music so this may be a very dumb question, can anyone tell me what I would plug this into during a live set. Would I just connect it to an amp?
