Thank you so much, Jill! 💕 I really should do that with the products, but sometimes there are so many and it's very time consuming to go and find all of the links etc., so I just include the one Jackson's affiliate link and then make sure I'm mentioning/showing exactly what I'm using and the colour etc. But I'll see what I can do in the future! :)
Thank you so much for your videos. I love them. You are such a wonderful artist. Thank you for mentioning MapCrunch. I am so excited. I don't get to go out much due to my illness, but want to paint more original artworks and this resource will allow me to do that. Thank you so much for this resource. I can't thank you enough. I hope you have a wonderful evening. Best wishes...
Sorry to hear you were unwell Natasha🌺 I was thinking about you very much. Wishing you complete healing and wellness. Loved the ideas you shared in your sketchbook and your artwork is truely beautiful love and big hug🙌
Thank God you feel better. I have the Derwent extenders (comes in a pack of two 1 black and other silver) the black works with my luminance pencils because it has a contracting feature to adjust to the pencil size. Hope that helps
I don't have any luminance, but I do have that extender set and too many Derwent pencils, so I can confirm that the larger size definitely works well with both the Derwent Lightfast and Drawing pencils. It's a real shame you can't buy them separately, though. I rarely use the one for standard diameter pencils, so I don't need another of those, but I could definitely put another larger diameter to use! As it is, I'm frequently swapping my sepia (red) and ivory black drawing pencils in and out, so those little stubs are pretty scratched and beat up at this point.
I too have the Derwent pencil extenders and they are brilliant, the fact you can adjust them is great,I have a few of them they are definitly a god investment (matt)
@@lizhart81 Try the Jackson’s pencil extenders. They are cheap and to me, much better than the Derwent ones. Plus. They allow me to use the pencils really until the end (I have stumps measuring less than half an inch).
I would like to see more of how you layer materials in your drawings. Very interesting and I have a lot of the supplies you are working with. Many thanks.
Hi Carole, I share more of my process on my Patreon account, but I sometimes upload process videos on here too. I've only recently started getting into mixed media, and I'm finding it a lot of fun!
Wishing you all goodness in health and art. Thank you for sharing your beautiful tips, techniques and art. You always inspire me to try new things and just play and have fun in my sketchbook. I am also really excited about your postcards!
I’m glad you have recovered and are back to your art - and you even used your break for sketchbook work and experimenting with your materials. It shows again that art, relaxed and for fun, is the best therapy!
I couldn't do anything for weeks, and I knew I must be feeling a bit better when I felt able to draw again! This was a great way of easing myself back into art making. 🖤
I was so EXCITED upon receiving notification this morning that you posted a new video. I am so relieved and happy that you have recovered and seem to be newly inspired. I have missed your videos too too much! What a treat to have my quiet coffee time punctuated by your lovely voice. I am looking forward to a feast of videos from you. Welcome back. (I love these layering techniques, but I am still confused as to how you achieved the look of the sky in your drawing.)
Aw, thanks Sharon! What a lovely comment. It's great to be back! 🤗 Basically, for the sky I used a very pale grey Pitt Artist brush pen, let it dry, and then went over the top with a Luminance pencil. You can vary the colours depending upon the effect you'd like to achieve, but I just tend to use the pencil very lightly over the top in a very loose, scribbly way, varying the angle of the lines/strokes. It creates a lovely loose, layered texture. I hope that makes sense! It may look different on the actual drawing compared to the swatch because I used the pen over a larger area (and therefore you get some overlapping of the pen marks, which makes it a bit more patchy).
Hi Natasha! I´m so pleased to see you here on your channel again. I have missed you a lot but was hoping you had taken some holidays. Sorry for your bad health these last weeks. You must take good care of your self and put your well being in place number one. I enjoyed this lesson very much and would like to see more like it in the future. Thank you so much.
Thank you, Vaka! I'm so pleased that you enjoyed the video. :) I'm definitely taking it easy at the moment and will continue to make sure I have more balance in my work/life moving forward.
Yay! So happy you are back and feeling better! Thank you for the layering tips, I have a much smaller set up of pencils but I will definitely try something from this video :)
It’s so good to see you back in your studio and sharing your techniques. I’m sad to hear of your health problems and happy you are feeling better. You are in my thoughts, prayers and heart for a full and complete recovery. I like the first page of your new sketchbook! It’s a great idea and I’m copying in mine… don’t be afraid of the sketchbook, just go in and have fun! 🎉😂 I especially like making notes of what went wrong and what went right, also. As I quickly forget 😥. As for the extenders, the Derwent silver should fit Luminance. You can always hot glue a dowel, if all else fails. 🤔 Take care, rest and feel better soon! Love, Fran
Thanks Fran, that's so kind and I really appreciate your best wishes. 💕 Making notes of what went wrong or right with a piece in your sketchbook is a great idea - I love that! I've purchased the Derwent pencil extenders and the silver one fits, yay! 🎉
I'm so happy the extender worked for you. These coloured pencils are too precious not to use them all the way to the end. It would be great if they would make the wood case longer so we can use all the color with an extender.
I am so happy you are on the mend Natasha. This is a great video. I love learning about adding texture and depth. Yes please to more 'how to' videos and sketch book pages. I had not thought of overlaying light neo colors to knock back darkness...wonderful. thank you so much for your insights. Stay well now. Grow stronger. Be kind to yourself. X
Thanks Lesley! I'm so glad that you found the video useful. It's lovely to be back, but I'm currently taking it very easy and making sure I rest a lot. xx
It's really good to see you among the living!! And sharing these wonderful mind expanding techniques with us all. I have a collection of pencils that I just never use much, but, now, I am excited to give them a go in my own work, Huzzah and thank you!!
Yes, more videos like this one, please. Glad you are feeling better and thanks so much for the mapcrunch tip. ❤️ I’m also a fan of the Royal Talens Art Creations sketchbooks. They make my heart smile.
Love that Welsh cottage at 6:52, and the rich, textural fields at 8:08 (even though you say you overworked it - I love the layers!). Ithink the notion of commenting on your 'failures' (or experimentations as I like to call them!) in the sketchbook is a genius idea... The hillside behind the 'difficult day' cottage 10:13 is a beautifully intense backdrop - it reminds me of Cornish or Welsh slate mines. 🖤
I thought something was wrong. So glad you’re feeling better. You have needed time out and it’s good that you’re up and about again. Take it easy though and get stronger.xxx
Thank you for sharing your process, it is so lovely to see you work and hear you talk about it. It makes me want to sit down and make art! I loved this video where I can learn some new techniques and I will definitely experiment with my own supplies and see what I can do.
Ps I get migraines too (mine are very intense for a day or so and thankfully pass) so hard to pin it all down as mine seem to be partly hormones, food triggers, stress even the weather 🙄any jumble of the above can trigger them really. Anyhoo no unwanted advice just solidarity from a fellow sufferer.
And yes, it is really hard to pin down as mine have various triggers too - stress, lack of sleep, hormones, weather (particularly hot and humid weather) seem to be huge ones for me. Not always easy to avoid them! I'm sorry that you get migraines too.
Hello Natasha and welcome back! So nice to hear that you are feeling good again💜 I missed your videos and I enjoyed so much this sketchbook time one. I love that you shared with us all the experiments you did and the techniques you have found. To me is really charming and relaxing to watch at someone drawing and I was so pleased to learn how you achieved those amazing textures. It's like you are still painting, even when you are not using liquid paints, such as acrylic or watercolor. I was used to think that people "draw" with pencils and "paint" with paints, but it was a really conventional and rigid belief in a way. Since I've been following you I feel like you have taught me a lot. This is such a beautiful aspect of social medias. Thank you very much for sharing! 💜 I can't wait for the next sketchbook time video 🥰
I'm so pleased that you enjoyed the video, Elisa! Thank you. I was also thinking about the difference between (or not!) painting and drawing the other day after I accidentally called my sketchbook drawing 'a painting'. I like and agree with what you've said here. :) x
I loved everything about this video! Loved the lesson, the finished art example, the supplies, and how inspiring you are! This made me want to jump up and grab my sketchbook. Thank you!!
I’m so glad you are showing me to appreciate my derwents. I am the opposite of you, loving more gem colors in my palette, with a strong large overlap because I love your colors too. But muted earthy colors are not my favorite but you inspire me to use them differently! Thanks! I regretted choosing them over luminance full set
Welcome back 🌸 Good to see you experimenting and giving us new tips! I’ve always wondered if you were using those big Liquitex markers; I guess you’re gonna need a bigger sketchbook 😁 As for the pencil extenders, I bought the Derwent. The black one is too small but the silver one works perfectly 😉💕
Thanks Nico! 💕 I feel like the big markers definitely need larger sheets of paper! I've just bought an A4 size sketchbook, so will probably use them in there. The smaller ones suit me better though! Thanks for the tip about the Derwent pencil extenders - a few people have recommend these in the comments so I'm definitely going to get them. :)
@@NatashaNewtonArt Great ☺️ I always love watching you work with acrylics; not many interesting channels show it, and you definitely have some great results 🌸

Thanks Maureen! 💕 I'm definitely taking it easy at the moment and will continue to make sure I have more of a balance between my work and time off/relaxation in the future. :)
I was watching this and I wanted to practice my harp and was having a hard time deciding… and then I remembered your videos don’t use music so I was able to do both at once!
Wishing you a speedy recovery and a healthy and productive August 🧡 I happen to have been ill in July as well and really missed your videos. The beautiful Welsh house drawing for some reason reminded me of a black and white film, Random Harvest (1942), maybe because it also had an idyllic looking cottage.
Welcome back! Were you using the etcher sketchbook? And what is your favorite sketchbook? I'm currently working in a moleskin sketchbook and I like it, but it's not holding up that great with my watercolor paintings. I have to be gentle with the paper.
Thanks Kate! I should have mentioned in the video that I've written in the description which sketchbook it is - this time I'm using a Royal Talens Art Creation sketchbook. They're similar to the Moleskine sketchbooks but much cheaper! I love using them for dry media and maybe a little paint, but they wouldn't hold up to very wet washes! I would say that these are my current favourite sketchbooks alongside the Etchr cold pressed watercolour sketchbook (which is obviously much better for paint!).
Hello Natasha! I am certainly late to the party, but… I use Jackson’s pencil extenders. They are cheap (we can buy in bulk), effective and much more comfortable to hold than the Derwent ones, that I have as well (which are super expensive and only sold in a blister of two, one of which is too small for almost all the pencils - Luminance, Lightfast and even Polychromos). Thank for this video!
Hi Natasha, I have been following you for over a year and love your channel. So glad to hear you are well but was a little concerned when I did not see anything posted for awhile. About pencil extenders... and you may already know this, but thought I would share it anyway. I am an artist myself, and found DERWENT pencil extenders, the SILVER one (they come two in a pack, one large and one small) work both with Luminance and Lightfast colored pencils.
Thank you so much - it's lovely to hear that you're enjoying the videos! And thank you for the tip about the Derwent pencil extenders; several people in the comments have mentioned these so I will definitely get a pack. :)
Glad you are feeling better. Also very happy to see another of your YT videos which I always enjoy. By the way I lightfast tested the fluorescent kremer paints....not good at all as they faded badly, although the blue less so.
Thanks Denise! I don't know whether you received a notification, but I saw your comment on the fluorescent paints and replied to it - strangely, not long before you left this comment!
Hi!... only just recently came across your channel and have really enjoyed your artwork. Thank you for sharing 😊 ... I also have the extenders that are too large and if you are still waiting for the Derwent ones, you could try to wrap the end of the pencil in paper until you’re able to squeeze in the pencil and get a good grip. This way your extenders won’t go to waste perhaps?.... just an idea but it worked for me :)
Thank you for this really interesting and inspiring video! I'm now so excited to experiment with materials i have:) Found your channel yesterday and immediately fall in love with your style. I've started to watch from art haul video and now there so many things i want to try, especially schmincke and W&N gouache!)
Hi Natasha, LOVE your artwork. Are you working in a watercolour sketchbook? Also, do you use a fixative on top of your sketches to avoid transfer. Transfer always chases me away from my pencils but I want to expand away from watercolour for a little while.
Hi Debbie! I've found that the transfer isn't too bad (I use Luminance, Derwent Lightfast, and Polychromos pencils mostly) so I don't use a fixative. The sketchbook here is a Royal Talens Art Creation - one of my favourites!
Natasha, you can try to wrap your pencils in painters tape and then insert them into the pencil holder ☺️ It should work for you unless the holder is massive, of course 😂
Maybe a bit too late to comment. But for pencil extenders, you could wrap your pencil in artist tapes so that it fits into the larger end of the extender.
Glad to hear you are feeling brighter. Can I ask about the stubby Caran D'Ache crayons (neocolors) which you said were useful to have in your kit? I saw there were watercolour crayons and also classic types but not much choice of colour in the latter. Which type were you using? Don't want to buy the wrong one! I could only see light grey in the watercolour type.
derwent holder fits my luminance, but don't leave the holder under sun or heat, the handle part can get very slightly tacky, but it doesn't bother me. But also I just want to mention that I live in the tropical zone, so we are well over 32C on average everyday, and leaving that under the afternoon sun was my problem.
Yay!!!! So happy to see you are back and feeling better!!!! Welcome back.. we missed you!! 💜 the textures are really beautiful 🤩… I noticed when working on your sketchbook that you skipped some pages between drawings..how come?
Thanks Erika! :) I tend to skip pages when I've pressed really hard when working on a drawing and it has marked the next page. I would have felt weird about doing this in the past (feeling like I have to fill every page), but I've noticed that other artists do this in their sketchbooks, so that's what I do too now!
Hi Natasha, some weeks ago I tried your laying Pitt Pen with the Luminance in different directions in my Stillman and Birn Zeta sketchbook. Today I fund the Luminance marks almost smelted invisible into the Pitt Pen colors. Have you experiensed anything similiar?? I realy love the texture the laying makes, but if the medias don't go together it't sad. Happy Easter
Happy Easter, Hanne Marie! I'm sorry to hear that this has happened to you. I've just checked on my sketchbook drawings from last year to see if this is the case, but the same hasn't happened to me. The Luminance pencil is still very much visible on top of the Pitt pen; I can see that they are definitely separate layers.

The way forward from this point wil gradually show itself to you,it could take you and your amazing work in a whole new direction, you'll find your wellbeing/creative wellbeing will work in tandem as you move forward.
Thanks Matt! It really is the perfect way to ease myself back into art-making, and I just feel so happy and relaxed when I'm working in my sketchbook. My anxiety seems to just melt away. 🖤
@@NatashaNewtonArt It's true, there is something a little healing about just sitting quietly with your sketchbook and some pencils, you can just let things go and see where working in your sketchbbok takes you. I make time for my sketchbooks everyday,it's jut a way to ease yourself gently back into your creativity.
I was so happy to see this video this morning! Lovely to have you back, hear your voice, and learn more techniques from you. Thank you, thank you! I hope you continue to feel better so you can do what you love. I just love your generosity in sharing your techniques with us. Have a beautiful weekend! (P.S. If it’s not too time consuming, I love it when you link the products you use. Saves me from having to write them down as you go, and I’m happy to benefit your work by using the affiliate links. 🙂)
Missed you. Glad you're on the mend.
Thank you, I really missed being here and chatting to everyone!
Thank you, Jacqlyn! :)
Sorry to hear you were unwell Natasha🌺 I was thinking about you very much. Wishing you complete healing and wellness. Loved the ideas you shared in your sketchbook and your artwork is truely beautiful love and big hug🙌
Thank you so much, Deborah! 🤗
Yes, I am definitely interested is seeing more of your sketchbook work! These techniques are brilliant! Thx for sharing x
Ah, thanks so much Jo Anne! x
So happy you're back and feeling better! x
Thanks Lucy! 🤗
Thank God you feel better. I have the Derwent extenders (comes in a pack of two 1 black and other silver) the black works with my luminance pencils because it has a contracting feature to adjust to the pencil size. Hope that helps
That's brilliant, thank you! I'll check it out. :)
@@lizhart81 lucky me then mine was just two in the pack
That's so lovely to hear as that's what I hope these videos will do - inspire others to experiment and play! Thanks Meg. :)
Great fun! Thank you so much for sharing how you achieve some of your textures!
Thank you! :)
I really enjoyed this video and thanks for sharing some of your techniques and textures!
So glad you enjoyed it! Thanks Susan. :)
Nice to know you are better. Thanks for sharing your tips to get some nice textures in our illustrations. Greetings from the Canary Islands!
Thank you! I visited the Canary Islands when I was a child - stunning landscapes away from the tourist areas!
Your landscapes are very whimsical, but also relaxing. I also like the shape of the sketch book
Welcome back Natasha. What a treat to listen to you as I'm doing my own little sketches. You always inspire me
That's so lovely to hear! I'm going to be making sketchbook videos a much larger part of my channel. :)
Whenever I watch one of these I feel so inspired to just play with my supplies, so yes please to more markmaking fun!
I'm so pleased - that's what I'd hoped they would do! :)
So glad to see you’re feeling better! Have missed your videos 🧡
Thank you! I've missed being here. :)
Yay! So happy you are back and feeling better! Thank you for the layering tips, I have a much smaller set up of pencils but I will definitely try something from this video :)
Thanks Nina, it's great to be back!
Good to know you’re bouncing back. Hope you’re getting enough rest. So good to see you back on the channel. 😊
Thank you! I'm really trying to make sure I'm not overdoing it. :)
It's lovely to be back, but I'm currently taking it very easy and making sure I rest a lot. xx
Thank you so much for this, I learned so much about layering and using different media to make marks! I'll be rewatching several times!
That's great to hear, Melanie! Thank you. :)
Loved this so much! Hoping to see more like this from you. This is a wonderful way to learn about new supplies!!
Great tips! Thank you for this video! I would really like to watch more videos like this, with colored pencils tips for textures.
Thank you! So glad you enjoyed it. :)
I love the notes in this sketch book. It reminds me of Sarah Mida’s books 🌿
So glad you're back and feeling better Natasha. :)
Thank you, Anja! 🤗
It's really good to see you among the living!! And sharing these wonderful mind expanding techniques with us all. I have a collection of pencils that I just never use much, but, now, I am excited to give them a go in my own work, Huzzah and thank you!!
Thanks Michelle! That's really great - I hope you have fun experimenting with them! 💕
Yes, more videos like this one, please. Glad you are feeling better and thanks so much for the mapcrunch tip. ❤️ I’m also a fan of the Royal Talens Art Creations sketchbooks. They make my heart smile.
They're such great quality sketchbooks for the price!
Thank you, I'm really trying to be careful at the moment and just gradually ease myself back into work. :) xxx
I also use the Derwent two-pack extenders. The silver one works fine with both luminance and polychromos
Thanks Sara! They've been added to my favourites list on Jackson's. :)
Thank you for sharing your process, it is so lovely to see you work and hear you talk about it. It makes me want to sit down and make art! I loved this video where I can learn some new techniques and I will definitely experiment with my own supplies and see what I can do.
This is lovely to hear as it's one of the main reasons I make these videos! I'm so happy that you were inspired. 🖤
This video is exquisite
Glad you're feeling better, Natasha! I loved seeing how you layer to create texture :)
Thanks Karen! :)
Hi! Really good to see you 😊
I was wondering about the textures, so it was great to see you teaching them. Thank you ❤️
You're very welcome! It's fun to be able to share some of the techniques I use. Thanks for watching. 🤗
Loved this - yes please to more like this - so inspiring. Hope you feel much better soon
Thanks Sarah, I'm so pleased that you found it inspiring!
Missed seeing your content, glad your feeling better. :)
Thank you, Clare! 🤗
So nice to hear that you are feeling good again💜
I missed your videos and I enjoyed so much this sketchbook time one.
Thank you!!
That's so lovely to hear Mags, and just what I hope these videos will do! Thank you! 🖤
Thank you for sharing your tips to get texture! Your videos are beautiful, Natasha 🌸
Thank you so much, Jaime!
Love this! Thank you so much for sharing
We love that ur back ❤❤❤❤❤
Thank you! It's lovely to be back. :)
I’m so sorry you were sick! We missed you but the most important thing is your health!
Thanks Brooke! It's nice to be back. :)
Your work is soo beautiful, Natasha! ❤
I’ve always wondered if you were using those big Liquitex markers; I guess you’re gonna need a bigger sketchbook 😁
As for the pencil extenders, I bought the Derwent.
Really great Natasha! I would really love to see more 💖🙏
Thank you, Rina! I'm so pleased you enjoyed it. 🖤
Thank you for taking the time to make this...so helpful!! I'm about to buy new supplies to jazz up my art kit and it was so useful seeing you demo the capabilities of these. I have just discovered your channel and know I'll be returning many many times...i wish you every success with it for the new year!!!
Thank you so much, Mia! I'm so glad that you found useful. Happy New Year!
This is the first video of yours I've seen and I just absolutely love your style. Subscribed. Glad you're feeling better. 💜
Thank you so much, Kristina. 🖤 I'm really pleased you like it!
oh yea please do more videos like this natasha
I’m so happy to hear you are ok, I was becoming quite concerned when I hadn’t seen anything posted. I’m so sorry to hear that you haven’t been well and hope that in the future you will schedule enough ‘rest and recuperate’ time for yourself, it is so important. And a big heartfelt thankyou for all of the time you spend sharing your techniques and knowledge. I have been following your Chanel for some time now but missing your videos so much has prompted me to now become a patron. I hope I can figure out how to do it 🤔🥰
Thanks Maureen! 💕 I'm definitely taking it easy at the moment and will continue to make sure I have more of a balance between my work and time off/relaxation in the future. :)
i love your videos!!! especially this one!
Aw, thanks Becca! :)
I was watching this and I wanted to practice my harp and was having a hard time deciding… and then I remembered your videos don’t use music so I was able to do both at once!
Ah, brilliant! Multi-tasking. ;)
Yes please, more sketchbook time! :)
Thank you! I'm glad you enjoyed it. More to come! ;)
I'm so sorry to hear that you've been ill too, Elena. I hope you're feeling better now! I'll Google 'Random Harvest' as I'm curious now!
I would say that these are my current favourite sketchbooks alongside the Etchr cold pressed watercolour sketchbook (which is obviously much better for paint!).
loved these techniques
Thanks Suzanne!
This was so interesting! Thank you for sharing your tips 😊
Thanks Laurence!
Thanks for the suggestion, Chris!
Interesting. Thank you.
I need to try this, thanks Nikeeta! :)
Thank you for this really interesting and inspiring video! I'm now so excited to experiment with materials i have:) Found your channel yesterday and immediately fall in love with your style. I've started to watch from art haul video and now there so many things i want to try, especially schmincke and W&N gouache!)
Thanks so much, Natalie - I'm so pleased that you found it inspiring!
Hi Natasha, LOVE your artwork. Are you working in a watercolour sketchbook? Also, do you use a fixative on top of your sketches to avoid transfer. Transfer always chases me away from my pencils but I want to expand away from watercolour for a little while.
You could use a fixative, or just cut a piece of baking parchment and stick it between your pages.
Hi Debbie! I've found that the transfer isn't too bad (I use Luminance, Derwent Lightfast, and Polychromos pencils mostly) so I don't use a fixative. The sketchbook here is a Royal Talens Art Creation - one of my favourites!
I presumed you were on a lovely holiday somewhere 😁 so sorry you were so ill - especially throughout summer! Glad you are well and back with us! Xx
Thanks Pierre! I'm gradually feeling much better, which is a huge relief. 💕
Natasha, you can try to wrap your pencils in painters tape and then insert them into the pencil holder ☺️ It should work for you unless the holder is massive, of course 😂
I am going to give this a try, thank you!
Me too! (Scared of starting new sketchbooks!)…eek!…just started a new one today😬😊
It's always a bit nerve-wracking!!
Love your aesthetics! You got a new subbie 😉
Thank you so much! 🖤
My Light Grey is the Neocolor 1 (the ones that aren't water soluble). I got it from Jackson's at the end of last year!
@@NatashaNewtonArt Thank you!
You can use tissue pare to fit the pencil tight.
If you put tape on the end of the pencil you can use the pencil extenders you have
derwent holder fits my luminance, but don't leave the holder under sun or heat, the handle part can get very slightly tacky, but it doesn't bother me.
@@NatashaNewtonArt ok, thank you for answering. I may have my sketchbook page been open and exposed to sunlight om my table for some days.
