I had a 73 Chevelle Laguna S-3. I bought it from a Chevy dealer in 1975 and it had 14k on it. I payed 3200.00. It was a great car and got me thru college. In 1991 I went to the local junkyard and bought a 455 Pontiac engine out of a low mileage '75 Bonneville. In 1975 and 76 Pontiac added a huge chamfer around the outer edge of the piston that lowered the compression from 8.1 to 7.6. That's low. But with a Comp Cams 270H, an Edelbrock Performer intake and a set of Hooker❤ headers I was running real consistent 13.8-14.0 quarter mile times in my 69 GTO with a TH400 and 3.55 rear gear. And best of all I could burn lawnmower gas stolen from my grandpa's shed with no problems what so ever!!! Those mid 70's big blocks were very docile but still capable of great performance with all that torque.
With such a low 7.6 compression I would add boost for sure. That low compression would allow you to run pump gas and plenty of boost. Only problem is the carburetor if running a turbo. Maybe a centrifugal supercharger would be better. Lots of work regardless. But you could easily run sub 11 second 1/4 mile with boost.

This format is great. Me and my family pause to talk about the cars and make predictions. My family has always been into cars and even the little ones can make try to guess which car is faster.
I'm surprised the Olds didn't break into the 13's...maybe needed a little more aggressive gearing. 1973-74 was the beginning of the muscle car malaise era...with the 455SD Trans Am maybe being the one exception. Props to the Chevelle..ran hard! 👍
I have a 74 Charger Rallye 440-4 torqueflite, optional 3.55s ordered stripped from the factory, i.e. bench seat etc. 270hp/375ft lbs. Out of the box ran 15.0 at 92. If I duplicated the rules, i.e. a 70 overbore, and an extra 1.5 on the compression, rejetted carb, super blueprint and balance, shift kit, moderate lift front drag shocks I would run rings around that Chevelle. My point is the malaise started in 75 with the catalytics.
The weight of that Chevelle😳 Walking my local GM dealer in ‘74(Canada)and saw a new Chevelle with a 454 4 speed HD everything with steelies and hubcaps. Obviously ordered as it was in a back row. Shocked the hell out of me! Should have run home and taken a picture of the sticker.
I had that same exact '73 white/burgundy Laguna S3 you showed! I actually liked those Chevelles as well! So you were out getting milk like my dad 60 yrs ago but at least yours came back ✌💖☮
Love the 60s cars, but worked for a Chevy dealer when the '74 models were turning over to '75s. The boss drove a Laguna with a 454, but don't recall anyone ordering a police package in a Chevelle in that small town dealership. I think the cops were driving Impalas.
I love that generation. I was 14 when those came out, and currently own a 1974 Laguna S3. It's a small block 383, but makes more power than that 454, and weighs less. These cars are becoming extremely hard to find in decent condition. Mine is an original AZ car with zero rust. I have 275/60-15 BFG Radial T/As on the rear, on 15x8 wheels. My S3 runs in the mid THIRTEENS, though the engine is hardly stock.
A friend of mine had a 75 Malibu , we were at a party on the outskirts of town it was my first time on acid in a car there were no street lights and it was snowing heavy the big wet flakes , on high beams it looked like we were doing 120 mph I was telling my friend to slow down when in reality we were doing 25 mph , glad I was one of the passengers.
My 64 Chevy II coupe with 327 Duntov and Offy Intake and headers rowing a muncie made consistent 12.3ET's. The guy I sold it to said so. After they installed a 4.10 posi out back. That car made me lose my license for six months.
4440lbs... DAAAAYUM! Thats almost as heavy as my ex wife has gotten in the 22 years since our divorce! Ya know she still complains to our kids that I bought my 1970 GTO in 1994 when she said I was not allowed to. Guess who still has that GTO... and three other GTOs.. Yeah... this guy.
for the few of us that have kept our classic cars trough a mess like that we appreciate them even more every time we drive em! Im still married to a great wife but my 70 chevelle made it through marriage, 2 kids and building a house. It got CLOSE to getting sold but she made it! LOL
@@MrChevelle83 despite the years I endured living on almost nothing, I never sold my cars to pay bills. Mainly because until they are painted, they aren't worth what I have invested in them. I started learning to paint them in 2006, so now they end up looking nicer. My final divorce was in 2013, I will never get married again because I would lose everything in a divorce and I am too old to rebuild gain. I don't even date anymore, I drive my muscle cars and enjoy the peace and quiet of living alone in the woods. Rebuilding old cars gives me something to do, a purpose if you prefer, really though I want to build cool stuff and drive it more than anything else.
@@SweatyFatGuy well hek yea! I got a shop full of tools and i work on all kinds of projects, however I have been selling off my collection of cars n trucks, mainly due to the fact I realize I cannot afford to fix or maintain any more cars and trucks on the road. and your dead on about the values, these things are tough to make a dollar on when you spend a small fortune bringing them up to road worthy and look good too. 70chevelle (solid driver as is) 85 K30 flatbed (restored work truck) lol 66 chevy 2 4door (original car 25ksmiles) 71 C10 (original paint still looks good) 66 C10 (wifes truck) good local driver thats just the old ones LOL I put a TKX in my chevelle late last year for only $4000 and a TR4050 in the K30 it was about 5k Ill never be able to get my money back but money could never buy the fun or the enjoyment.
@@MrChevelle83 since I do all the work on my vehicles, I can make money from them... if I wanted to. My labor wouldn't be paid very well, but I can get my cash back real easy. I enjoy doing the work, which is why I have so many of them. I am more concerned about if I will be able to get parts, like sheet metal, glass, tires, gaskets, and other consumables like brake pads and rotors. Its prompting me to order quarter panels, fenders, and doors this fall/winter and stock up on tires and gaskets. I have a TRX waiting to go in the 65 GTO, I brought all my manual transmission parts back from the family farm last month, so I just need some clutch linkage parts and a driveshaft to put it in. I'll repair the ST10 and M20 I have had for years, and put them in the 69 and 70 GTOs, as long as I can get the parts to do it. My cost on stuff is quite low. However what I can sell a car for without shiny paint is considerably less than if I spend the time and put a nice two stage on it. My kids can sell what they don't want to keep, its rare I sell anything other than 4x4 trucks. A list of what I have sounds like bragging.. but most of them need restored or are really rough hulks like the 64 LeMans I just dragged home. If they were all in the same condition as the Cuda, I would be sitting on a gold mine for my kids. Four GTOs (65, 69, 70, 72) Eleven Firebirds (4 TransAms, 6 Formulas one of which is a numbers matching 72 455 HO, and a 68 V8 hardtop) 64, 65, 68, 70, 71, 72 LeMans 72 Ventura, 78 Bonneville (for parts it has a W72 400 in it for some reason) and a 32 two door sedan. Two Mustangs, 71 fastback and 84 Convertible. My first car which is a 67 Cougar. 70 Cuda AAR clone. 76 and 80 C10 short boxes getting 6.0 swaps along with an 88 C1500 short box. Then a bunch of 97 to 07 4x4s and some 3800 V6 powered Grand Prixs, one is sueprcharged, used as winter beaters. The 70 and 72 GTOs along with the 72 Formula could all be drivable with less than a week's work, same with the C10s. The 64. 69, and 68 Firebird are barely able to be called cars at this point. Two weeks I could drive the Ventura with a 400 or 455 in it real easy. The 68 is currently my 'race' car, the 65 GTO and 70 Cuda are my daily drivers all summer. Im still building my house, and have to move engines and cars from the family farm in Nebraska to my home in Michigan, which is a 1000 mile drive, but I should be heavy into building hotrods next spring, with the stuff in the shop now getting finished up. Then I have to build another shed to store stuff.. lol. I have around eight LS engines to sell, I am keeping the 6.0s for now, spares for trucks. I like to do this kind of thing, its not to make money, its to build fun stuff to drive and enjoy.
@@SweatyFatGuy well by gawlee LOL heck of a yard there, and a nice variety too!! naw it aint bragging this is classic car talk. Ive owned about that many cars over the years but not all were old and or not worth talking about like my 77 nova (first car) sold it to a high school friend and he smashed it into a durango. the only 2 i would buy back if it were possible were my favorite trucks is my 71 c10 LWB 4 speed, it had a nice hot 350 and would haul the mail! with 2.76 gears we put in. and my rock solid 76 K10 4speed SWB it was the perfect do anything 1/2 ton truck wise. I was heavily considering doing the LS thing and even had a crashed but perfect low mile tahoe running gear. We decided to just stay with SBC or BBC engines mainly due to the cost vs the performance we were going for. (i dont race unless you want to run em on a back road LOL) As far as the old transmissions, parts are DEFINITELY a problem and the ones on facebook or craiglist or ebay they are sooooo proud to own those things youd think grandpa passed em down as a family heirloom. I bit the bullet and saved my money to go modern for those reasons. Back several years ago before I could afford a muncie or tremec, I bought me a saginaw for a couple hundred bucks and all in spent 1000 on it by the time I was rowing gears. It worked great until I pulled the mild engine and put the built roller cam 350 in, 2 busted gear units later I was saving for the TKX. none of the old transmissions will even get close to how good the Tremec is, it was worth every penny for the driveability it added to the chevelle. and the best part is NO hacking the pans up to fit it. My wife inherited a 68 mustang convertable, solid restorable car for an average guy like me, but her heart was set on a step side chevy so we sold the stang and bought the 66, I think it was a good way to do it because Im a chevy guy at heart but I still like first gen stangs. we are moving to modern parts like putting a disk brake kit on the chevy 2 just for the parts issues, it has all part store stuff on it from various late model GM products.
THAT is cool AF 😎 being an original BB 1974 MALIBU!!! NEVER obviously seen one ..My 1st car was a maroon on maroon 77 MALIBU Classic with 305 auto. Those last era Chevelles were heavy - but they drove wonderfully. Very comfortable and spacious and they were strong sellers. The Cutlass was a style leader, I loved the Dr. Olds performance advertising.
Wow, that Chevy weighed 4,500 lbs? Even the 454 in all her glory would have its work cut out for it very quickly. That Olds w-31 , now that is a weapon. Good on them for keeping the image of Dr. Oldsmobile alive.
I owned at least 25 cutlasses when I was younger and my 1st one was a 71 cutlass supreme that I bought from a good friend in highschool and I paid $1000 for it and I got a 411posi rear and a crane cam and it had a B&M shift kit already in it and 455 rocket engine and I installed 202 fully heads in with a 4 barrel Holley carb and I took it to the Atco speedway in NJ and it ran high 12's in the 1/4mile and I was hooked on cuttlass's ever since 😎💪👍, the years that I had were 68 -76 and I loved all of them they were very powerful machines and had a great body style and very reliable 😎❤️👍

The weight of that Chevelle😳
Walking my local GM dealer in ‘74(Canada)and saw a new Chevelle with a 454 4 speed HD everything with steelies and hubcaps. Obviously ordered as it was in a back row. Shocked the hell out of me! Should have run home and taken a picture of the sticker.
Awesome , Thanks C&Z 😊
You are too funny man! I'm cracking up! You have a Sponge Bob-type Comic side!
Close up to Steven Tyler’s junk. Hahahaha!!!
🍆
@@CarsAndZebras Well theirs a image that will be burned into my memory of Steven Tyler I-talian eggplant.
The Chevelle was quicker than I expected, that's about as quick as a 1974 454 Corvette was too.
That Chevelle surprised me. Big girl can move!
I’m here for the drag racing and fart noises.
I had that same exact '73 white/burgundy Laguna S3 you showed! I actually liked those Chevelles as well! So you were out getting milk like my dad 60 yrs ago but at least yours came back ✌💖☮
Had a Oldsmobile Cutlass 455 with some aftermarket upgrades :) Ran strong with a 373 posi-trac
Like both cars. ....can't complain..😊😊
It would be a hard choice.....
Love the 60s cars, but worked for a Chevy dealer when the '74 models were turning over to '75s. The boss drove a Laguna with a 454, but don't recall anyone ordering a police package in a Chevelle in that small town dealership. I think the cops were driving Impalas.
Great video!
An Olds clean sweep. Hot Dang!
Thanks for showing this, my first car was a 74 Chevelle with a 350, what a dog, but I loved it anyway, really want another one
If we had a chance to do it all again, tell me
Would we?
Could we?
Another great video and commentary C&Z!
W31s were tops.
I'm suprised he didn't insert any adult film actresses into this particular video.
Excellent race
I Get a Kick Outta Your Sly Remarks and Funny Sound Effects !!! 👌😎✌️🤮
More videos please 😊
My 64 Chevy II coupe with 327 Duntov and Offy Intake and headers rowing a muncie made consistent 12.3ET's.
The guy I sold it to said so. After they installed a 4.10 posi out back.
That car made me lose my license for six months.
I missed the premiere 😢
In 1985 a Friend of mine had a Chevy Monza with a 375 HP & a 4 speed. You talk about Fast
The 73 to 77 chevelle and Malibu was my absolute favorite body style for these cars I miss my old 74 2 door
4440lbs...
70chevelle (solid driver as is)
85 K30 flatbed (restored work truck) lol
66 chevy 2 4door (original car 25ksmiles)
71 C10 (original paint still looks good)
66 C10 (wifes truck) good local driver
thats just the old ones LOL
I put a TKX in my chevelle late last year for only $4000
and a TR4050 in the K30 it was about 5k
Ill never be able to get my money back but money could never buy the fun or the enjoyment.
Four GTOs (65, 69, 70, 72)
Eleven Firebirds (4 TransAms, 6 Formulas one of which is a numbers matching 72 455 HO, and a 68 V8 hardtop)
64, 65, 68, 70, 71, 72 LeMans
72 Ventura, 78 Bonneville (for parts it has a W72 400 in it for some reason) and a 32 two door sedan.
(i dont race unless you want to run em on a back road LOL)
As far as the old transmissions, parts are DEFINITELY a problem and the ones on facebook or craiglist or ebay they are sooooo proud to own those things youd think grandpa passed em down as a family heirloom.
Wow ! reduced power on chevelle doesnt make him slower
Awesome!
Great to hear the poop machine working hard 😂
When I was in high school friend’s grandfather had a 74 Chevelle Malibu with a 350 and a 4 speed, I bet that was rare too.
Glad you're back, my man.👌
Love the W-31 350…like the Mopar 340, it’s a real giant killer
Closest Race my 69 Boss 302 Mustang ever had was against a '69 W-31 Olds Cutlas. I won but by 6 inches.
THAT is cool AF 😎 being an original BB 1974 MALIBU!!! NEVER obviously seen one ..My 1st car was a maroon on maroon 77 MALIBU Classic with 305 auto. And my HS nemesis had a blue on black 75 Laguna with the 350 auto and STANDARD bench seat (NO swivels and console). BACK in 88-89 daze 😏. Sold my Malibu after almost a year to buy my 1st "hot rod" and? It's been downhill EVER since Lol. Be 50 later this year 😬. THAT IS a cool smog dog, again 🤘🔥🤘
A smog era land Yacht in the 14's, that was impressive.
Olds has vent windows, 68 right not 69? Correction post cars all had vents.
Sooooooo glad the sarcasm is back, big time
i like these and the laguna was really cool and the olds was no slouch either i'll take both of these cars thank you
350 HP? What about the 455 cu. in?
I really love a good running Olds such an underated car
First time seeing your video... I would definitely chose the Oldsmobile Cutlass W-31. Great filming.
The w31 for 68 was called the RamRod 350. Say car ramrod!!!! Say it!!!!
There is no replacement for displacement... My 69 weighs 3100 depending if I ate the whole Pringles container or not is 468 CI and runs high 10s when not juicing. When juicing she's out of gear at 9.9s. I ordered mine custom in 69 with the 468 and Ac/heat delete package along with a 70 12 bolt from a Chevelle with 4:10s and Nitrous. I also did so from a cellular phone in 1984 when I was born. Still have the car til this day.... True Story 😂
THAT CHEVELLE IS REALLY HEAVY 4490 JUST ABOUT THE SAME AS THE 71 GTX
I CAN'T GET OVER HOW HEAVY THEY ARE
68 and 69 w31 Cutlass has had a cast iron intake 🥒💦 👈 I'm sure you'll appreciate this plus the correct information 🤓👍
I have a aluminum w31 intake and valve covers.intake has w31 stamped on it,also have engine it came off of but don't think it's a w31.will sell but not cheap.
Those last era Chevelles were heavy - but they drove wonderfully. Very comfortable and spacious and they were strong sellers. The Cutlass was a style leader, I loved the Dr. Olds performance advertising.
MUSCLE CAR ?
THIS ??
HARDLY !!!
Very quick witted video!
Your grandfathers olds. Kicked butt
I love this channel 😂💀
Was there in ‘21
I’ll b there this year !
That's almost spot on what my uncles W31 ran when he used to race it. Awesome
am i the only one that loves the 1973-1977 chevelle?
Thanks for all the hard work! Two great cars. I love big block Chevies, but the W31 (Ram Rod) will always hold a special place for me. That 310 HP, insurance cheating, engine is freaking awesome! Great racing by both drivers, and props for running a 3rd round. ~ Chuck 🌮 🌮. P.S. - Hope the milk was still cold when you got home. Seriously, glad to have you back.
Great channel but i believe the weights you advertise on your website are incorrect. The factory weights for the 1973-77 Chevelle's are in the 3600-3800 range even with a "Big Block they can't weigh more than the larger 1968-70 Charger or simliar classic cars like the Torino's from the 70's.-Great channel and have a great week.-
I had a 74 with the 454 and a 4 spd and the swivel bucket seats lime in the S3 Laguna. .
Love the commentary, please keep it nasty like my 70 tempest that was rusted out so bad that it could beat the 5.0 fox bodys with a 350 2 barrel and a Saginaw 3 spd
Thanks for putting this video on. I had a telephone company owned 1973 Suburban with a 4-barrel, a three speed automatic, and dual exhaust. t was a nice vehicle, but pathetically under powered.
Let’s see more 340 Mopars!
Thanks for the video, both car's were awesome, but got to love the Oldsmobile 👍
There is a man in my town who has a Luguna. White and maroon. It is his daily driver.
The 69 W-31 didn't have an aluminum intake, that was 1970 only.
