  • Many of you lovely people have been asking me about the "Dom Big Orchestra" patch and how I build it as it appeared on this video:
    • Yamaha Montage Orchest...
    Here is a walkthrough on how I created that sound. Of course don't be afraid to experiment and tweak it to your liking.
    Enjoy and let me know what you'd like to see next!

    I followed your instructions and this is a wonderful sound!!!! Thank you!!! You likely have more influence with keyboard and synth developers than I could ever wish for….Yamaha needs to add a 1 to 8 terabyte hard drive so we can load up a billion sounds!!!! Thank you so much!!!!

    I find the similar Factory Perforamce Patch on the Motif XF8 more useful - already set up with bigger crash cymbals - faster attack / more realistic release, bigger Brass, Tymp Sound, correct verb,etc. for a big bang orchestra feel - the attack and release here seem sluggish on this patch - Yamaha makes the best feeling keyboards though - The Montage is definitely on my shopping list this year - I really like the keyboard button to allow top and bottom parameters - I don't think I've seen that on many keyboards since the 80's. I also picked up a new Kronos 2 years ago - an important keyboard for synthy live performances - set lists are a game changer - but the action isn't really close to the Yamaha's for Piano material - and I hate double tiered keyboard setups - so the Kronos stays home unless really needed - Thanks for the tutorial!

    So funny.... you are orchestrating! If you were to take a look at an orchestra score you know perfectly well what sound to create. It is a study on it’s self. Hector Berlioz wrote a whole book on the subject. You are - in a way - continually reinventing the wheel... but it is fun to play around with this stuff, I fully understand that - so keep on and enjoy!😊

    Wow!! This was great thanks! Those effects are awesome too. Dom, is there any chance that the Montage will have a sound module version?

    • @DomSigalas
      @DomSigalas  7 лет назад +1

      Hi Digital Diezel, you mean like a version without the keys right? That would be great but there is no info if that's coming I am afraid. I think we never had one for the Motif XF though so I wouldn't hold my breath :)

    • @Alan_Chapman
      @Alan_Chapman 7 лет назад

      Rack XS is the last Motif module I know of. It would make a nice way of upgrading a keyboard without having to replace it entirely, but making a rack module interface that works as well as the display, knobs and sliders would be difficult. Doesn't seem to be the direction they are going.

    • @DomSigalas
      @DomSigalas  7 лет назад

      Hey Alan, definitely agree there. it defeats all the philosophy of the instrument. It's all about realtime control and playability. A rack version could not offer this in any way.

    • @digitaldiezel5870
      @digitaldiezel5870 7 лет назад +1

      Well I'm not sure I agree fully with that. They could create a desktop module and have plenty of performance capability and playability, ie Elektron Octatrack, MPC Live, DSI Tempest, Roland V-Synth and more. With an extensive midi implementation this could sell more units than the entire board. With the new MPCs out, external gear will see a resurgence. But not at a 3000-4000 price tag. The module would need to be 1500 max. And have the same full size, color screen.

    I saw that you limited the timpani to E2. Is it possible to assign different instruments to different areas of the keyboard but also have them on different octaves? For example, could I have a string sound on the left side of the keyboard and a flute on the right while prevents the string sound from being low octaves? I hope that this makes sense. Thank you!

    • @DomSigalas
      @DomSigalas  4 года назад +2

      Definitely! You can do all that. Check my video on how to do splits on the Montage ;)

    • @TheAceReviews
      @TheAceReviews 4 года назад +1

      @@DomSigalas Thank you for your reply! I just watched your split tutorial, very nice. Just to clarify can you have two different (or same) sounds on two different places on the keyboard but the same octave... but not a layer? The montage seems really versatile! I'm really considering it to cover Jean Michel Jarre songs and do orchestra sounds too.

  • @pavele.6304

    Hi Dom, nice video, but you missed one important thing, you added a choir as Part 8, but this sound was a multi parts sound so it went on the slots 8,9 and 10. BUT montage plays only parts1-8, parts 9-16 are for other purposes like sequencing, midi, arpeggios and so on. That's why your choir was so thin, because it only took 1 part from this multi part choir sound. Just mentioning it, keep the good videos coming!

    • @DomSigalas
      @DomSigalas  6 лет назад

      Having tried Genos, they seem to share some sounds. However, Genos is a completely different concept, the way I see it more leaning towards the arranger side. Montage is first and foremost a synth :)

      Can it do a smooth sound transition form one sound to another without a break in the sound like the Kronos.

    • @DomSigalas
      @DomSigalas  6 лет назад

      Definitely. If your sound doesn't exceed eight parts the transition will be seamless. For live playing you can play eight parts at the same time anyway :)

  • @mississippi_721
    @mississippi_721 7 лет назад

    Just realised that when I change piano tone to strings tone it gets cut instead of smooth transition and even the volume changes when I'm using volume pedal it gets loud when the tone is changed like for example when my previous tone volume is on half pedal and when I change to next tone without pressing pedal the volume resets and it goes on the max level! Sir is there any way I can solve this matter? Thanks in advance!

    Big problem that is not covered up by reverb: Most of these brass orchestral sounds release too abruptly, giving the game away, whereas most of the string sounds tend to have too long a release, also giving the game away. I don't know if you can adjust the ASDR controls to overcome this?

  • @Jack_von_Baron
    @Jack_von_Baron 6 лет назад

    Great patch Dom! But to be honest, the sound engine in this or even in Kronos are still not able to be on par with most Kontakt instruments when it comes to "Realistic-ality". They are still using the same type of samples from the 90's, very "Cartoon-y".
