  • In most cases, when your back hurts suddenly, it's not something really serious. It's like a temporary problem that usually gets better on its own. But sometimes, just rarely, back pain can be a sign of something more important or even a big disease. As doctors, we use a special word, 'NIFTI,' to remember all the reasons why back pain might be a sign of something serious. So, don't worry too much if your back hurts now and then, but it's always a good idea to let a doctor check if there could be something more to it.
Back pain is something that affects a lot of people, in fact, around 80% of us will experience it at some point in our lives. It's like a common thing that can happen to anyone. The good news is, for most people, it's not a sign of a really serious sickness or problem. Usually, it's more like a temporary guest that might stay around for a few weeks, sometimes up to 12 weeks, and then it goes away on its own. So, even though it can be uncomfortable, it's usually not something to worry too much about.
NIFTI is a word that doctors use to help us remember the reasons why someone's back might hurt a lot. Each letter in NIFTI reminds us of things that can be serious causes of back pain. 'N' reminds us of 'Neurological' issues, which are problems with your nerves. 'I' is for 'Infection,' like when you're feeling really sick. 'F' stands for 'Fractures,' which are like tiny cracks in your bones. 'T' is for 'Tumor,' meaning there's something strange growing inside your body. And 'I' is for 'Inflammation,' which can make parts of your body swollen and stiff, especially in the morning. So, when doctors talk about NIFTI, we're thinking about these important reasons for severe back pain.

I live in the UK. I'm 61, have advanced scoliosis, and osteoporosis in my spine. After my last cancer treatment I was put on estrogen blockers that caused horrible side effects. I lost the will to live even. It caused joint and back pain. I took them for about a year and just stopped. My joint pain disappeared, but I have been dealing with chronic lower back pain for 18 months now, 24/7. The intensity varies, but it's always there in the sacroiliac joints and the spine in that region. It feels like something touching a nerve if i move or step wrong. I have to watch how i walk, move, sit diwn, get up, get in and out of bed, put clothes on. One wrong move and im in wven worse pain for days or weeks. The mri shows "nornal wear and tear" in that region and as I don't have any neurological problems the gp and icats don't belive I'm in pain. I can't sit, can't stand and can't walk for long, and I constantly have to change between these 3. I can't even watch a movie without having to stand up and move about a bit. I haven't had undisturbed sleep for 18 months as I can only sleep on my side with pillows positioned between my legs etc, and I must turn 5-6 times at night. If I accidentally turn onto my back while asleep, I wake up in pain. I have been seen by a physiotherapist once a month for a year now. The exercises I do don't help and sometimes I'm not even able to do them as the next day the pain is worse. There's absolutely no help to get here and it's impossible to be seen by a specislist. (Cancer has been ruled out.)
