Lol Rory, that last shot of all the trucks hanging out together. Some people think one truck is all you need but others know that trucks are like golf clubs and you need a different one for every scenario.
Another awesome recovery for Rory and Mike. They got the broken part repaired and the customer drove that EV vehicle out. I was concerned about welding on that critter to but Rory did his research and it seems like all is well in Trail Mater fashion. Good job guys!
Great video as usual. Love you guys!! It's cool you have a shirt now. It would be fun to have a decal of trail mater too. I personally love stickers. Be safe out there.
Neat-O trail repair! I was concerned with welding, and all the electronics on board. While the battery(S) are still connected. There should be a main disconnect for the high voltage stuff.
Some EVs have a pull out plug to isolate the batteries, some have a cable you cut. No clue about Rivian, but I know I have never welded on a car without disconnecting the battery completely. Electric cars are the future, but at the moment there is a lot of perfectly understandable ignorance about best practice and what is safe to do and what isn't.
@@secret5. True, but why chance it, any of those modules are crazy expensive, if it's even available. Plus then it won't move, and have be yanked outa there.
@George Vinson Here at the GM dealer, most all new model trucks have a safety feature that prevents shifting to neutral under certain conditions and the electronic parking brake applied. Real pain in the ass to get them into service bay with all 4 wheels locked up.
That Rivian has more ground clearance that I thought it would. I'm sure it has a bit of a lift but the absence of drive shafts and transmissions make a huge difference.
@@Mick_A_Knuckle I believe it has adjustable air suspension or as Rivian calls it independent air suspension. It has pressurized flexible rubber bellows or what you might call air springs.
@@lesleythornton2874 Yes, the ride height is controlled through air springs, but I was curious about changes in camber at the higher ride height. Did some digging, and found that the truck defaults to the standard ride height when it's shut off, or maybe even while driving on smooth level ground. So the camber is set for the standard ride height with the reasonable assumption that not a lot of driving will occur in the raised position.
Sweet, I've been waiting for you to get shirts. Always good to watch a master craftsman do his thing no mater the trade and your the best I have found at recovery.
Not yet, we tried getting a couple extra tie rods but they weren't willing to hand any extras over..LOL. Glad to see that Men's Sizes of the Shirts are Sold Out!! I"ll wait Patiently for a chance to Order mine! I've never seen an EV like this, Great Recovery! That Tie Rod looked very small in Diameter. Nice repair.
That was a cool recovery! Looks like the trend for EV's (at least Rivian and Tesla) is that they won't sell parts - their technicians have to get the parts and install them. I doubt the EV manufacturers will ever go out on the trials to fix them, though.
@@kdoeone battery packs exist that can be pre-charged to take to someone tesla does that. not saying that's what they would do since a generator is probably easier but uknown always an option
EV drivers hardly ever run out of power in the main battery. They’re usually very aware of their situation. On slow speeds the range goes up immensely and the power goes up downhill . The most common reason an EV breaks down is the 12v battery which is needed for the switches. The fix is easy just like on ice cars. The same goes for insufficient axles. The art is to know when not to use the torque you have.
Old Tech rescues New Tech...classic. Surprised that the "smart" crawl mode couldn't keep the front tire from spinning on the steep grade lol...can't beat real lockers ;)
@@swapnilmankame obviously the stock EV truck was not designed to drive on trails like this... But it had plenty of traction to get up the incline without the help of a winch if the 4x4 system was better at preventing wheel slip 🙂
Nice little ride along, tho it would seem folks know what Trailmater is by all the waves & no Karen's screaming "you're going the wrong way!", lol !! Thanx !
I've been waiting for a Rivian recovery video since I quite literally live one right and three left turns from the factory. I see them all the time at the McDonald's on Main and Raab and they are all completely clean since there is no off-roading in central Illinois, other than driving on our paved roads. Yeah, the lack of parts infrastructure is a concern with Rivian. It isn't like a Jeep where you can find parts basically anywhere. I'm glad to see you were able to help them.
They're cool, but they weigh over 7000 lbs, which is SuperDuty/ HD kind of weight; and that tie rod looks awfully thin for something so heavy and with so much power. I know their forged control arms look a little more beefy-- but that tie rod is embarrassingly small. lol
True, did you notice the size of the brake caliper? New Broncos are having the same problem. Manufacturers are cutting weight and costs in the wrong places. Has nothing to do with the potential for the rest of the vehicle.
It's coming, more EVs on the trails, more EV recoveries. Just wait, Rory is going to come up with some ultra cool modular thing-a-ma-jigs to add to the recovery vehicles for recovery points, on-trail charging, and all the unique new problems that EVs bring. Trailside charging I think will be a big one.
I imagine that the vehicle will use more power than people estimate and account for, so I think dead EV's on the trail will be a larger problem in the near future. But I also think the welders that are currently on the market, like Rory uses in this video, could be adapted to charge EV's... Would probably just take forever LOL
@@Odins-Dad why would it take forever? like all you would need is an oscilloscope and a multi meter to figure out all the data you would need. there are already a bunch of people charging off of generators a welder is just a generator.
@@aylahughes9185 ah, I meant it would take forever to charge. So the comparison comes down to how much work would it take to tow the dead EV out vs waiting for it to charge. I dont know how many KWH one of those welders puts out (too lazy to do the research right now lol). But now that I think about it, you really just need enough charge to get them to the nearest EV charger. So like, 30 minutes maybe? A couple hours at most?
Hey Rory always love your trail fix videos and a rivian thats a new one EV'S are definately going to add so e new challenges but im sure you will throw something together that just works awesome job 👍🇦🇺
Hey Rory. Dana Spicer offers an upgraded spring and detent kit for the 465 trans. Also a chromemoly spacer for 3rd gear to avoid their snapring failure issue.
The Rivian would do a lot better st about 1/3rd of the tyre pressure. But it did pretty well. I've been waiting for something electric that can tow. Now I'm waiting for something electric that can tow and isn't so ugly.
You'll be waiting a while. Towing uses too much battery power. The battery that will eventually power trucks has not been invented yet. A 1000 lb battery holds @ 3 gallons of gas worth of energy. That's not good enough yet. EV's have a long way to go. Someday they will be incredible.
@@TheBandit7613 there are plenty of vehicles that fit my bill of they were engineered correctly. Hell, a hybrid Toyota Camry would do the job. It's the fact they make the battery an integral part of the body that means almost every electric or petrol-electric hybrid drops its 2000kg towing down to 500kg. The Rivian would do what I want it to do no problems. But its ugly. The Tesla model x would work but are $200,000. The Mercedes EQC is close but only 1800kg. The longest journey I do is 1000km and we currently take 2 breaks so as long as I get ~400km range towing my ~1500 race car I'm happy. I rarely tow 2000kg and never long distance anymore. I'm just tired of putting $150 worth of diesel in my BMW every other week. EV with 500km range would need a charge once a week and a charge costs about $40 so cheaper and easier and no having to line up at the cheap petrol station anymore
@@1one3_Racing I tow heavy, 15,000 lbs (6800 k) I saw a tow test for the Rivian and it didn't make it to the place they were going to do the test. When I tow, I want no drama. No country has enough grid power for an electric fleet. Imagine 150,000,000 people coming home from work and plugging in their 240 volt 50 amp charger. Instant blackout. Electric won't work for me anyway. Living in the western US, distances are vast, services few. I have a Ford F350. Filling it with diesel is not pleasant.
@@TheBandit7613 we live in rural Eastern Washington so totally see where you are coming from. That was truly part of the challenge getting to Moab was finding enough chargers along the way. The infrastructure really isn't there yet. Moab itself could use a few more chargers, they only had one that was a 50 KWh.
@@TheBandit7613 I've made the same argument and Driving 4 Answers said the same thing. No country could handle the extra electricity demands. For me and my situation, an EV would work. It would be slightly cheaper to run, plus there's no oil changes. The only drama being I tow my race car around sometimes. One thing the internet has taught me is that Australians are a lot more sensible in their driving habits. If you live in Melbourne and there's something you want in Cairns, you just don't buy it. Or Perth. Australia is almost as big as America but except for trucks nobody drives more than 1000km except for touring/caravaning/ or on occasion. Nobody tows more than around 2000kg. Some business owners will tow a bobcat or something up to 3000kg. Again, except for caravans. Americans will tow a 50' enclosed car trailer 3500 miles with 3 cars in it just for a 7 second drag race then go home again. That's just seems crazy to us.
@@DiscoFang but they do lose power when. They are on waiting to get on an obstacle or using winches, powering the AC if they raise their pinky when they drink. It’s not just about the range when wheeling or out on and adventure.
@@hawkman302 Well work it out rather than making statements up from the air. Air Con uses approximately 1kW to run, so each hour uses 1kWh. The mid model Rivian has a useable 135kWh battery so standing still that’s 135hrs. If you’re using the AC full power for, say, 10 hrs a day that’s 2 weeks. A 12,000lb winch will be around 4.5kW so run that for 3 mins 5 times a day and you’ve only used just over 1kWh. Get over your fears of math.
@@hawkman302 So to clarify, a 3 day adventure using AC 10 hrs a day, and the winch 15 times for 3 mins each would take about 30+3.5=35kWh leaving 100kWh which should easily get 200+miles at the low speeds of a rock crawl. It’s wind resistance at speed that really saps power.

I wondered how long before we got see an EV recovery or repair. As usual easier to trail fix than tow out. It would be interesting to see a full trail done by an EV. Great job, thanks for sharing.
They're out there! You'll be seeing more of them. There have been plenty of Jeep 4xe Hybrids running these trails already.
@@lindaspins I have no doubt that the hybrids are already out there. A little surprising full EV's though. Just a new way of off-roading.
Lol Rory, that last shot of all the trucks hanging out together. Some people think one truck is all you need but others know that trucks are like golf clubs and you need a different one for every scenario.
Great job, love the sound of your welder, all the best to yous and your loved ones
I like the camera under the truck view! And you show exactly what your welding good stuff
Another awesome recovery for Rory and Mike. They got the broken part repaired and the customer drove that EV vehicle out. I was concerned about welding on that critter to but Rory did his research and it seems like all is well in Trail Mater fashion. Good job guys!
thanks for bringing us along 😁
Watching this channel is like putting on an old, slightly worn, but very comfortable pair of shoes.
Wow, amazing craftsmanship, good luck my friend.. following you from Yemen
Great video as usual. Love you guys!! It's cool you have a shirt now. It would be fun to have a decal of trail mater too. I personally love stickers. Be safe out there.
I took a selfie in your parking lot today and Mater was present 🤟🏻. Just passing through!
@@ForeverNeverwhere1 the ground clamp was less than 12" away, it's fine.
The main battery is always disconnected when the car is switched off.The 12v battery is needed to drive the relays and connect the hv system.
Nice recovery. Thanks for sharing. Weekend Stuff
More great content from Rory and Trail Mater, love it!
Love the way you can Spin Trailmater around
Rory&tr8mtr never dissapoint on an educational and interesting recovery and trail fix videos
This is a BIG 👍
Thanks from England.
That Rivian has more ground clearance that I thought it would. I'm sure it has a bit of a lift but the absence of drive shafts and transmissions make a huge difference.
It raises from 9" (Sport Mode) to 15" (Off Road).
@@lesleythornton2874 Huh, I wonder how it adjusts camber through such a huge change in lift, must have self-adjusting control arms or something.
Always good to watch a master craftsman do his thing no mater the trade and your the best I have found at recovery.
love how Rory sneaks a tank turn into every video.
Rivian wheels with Trail Mater! How cool is that!
Might be a Moab first. Great job Rory. Makes you wonder if replacement parts are even available.
Not yet, we tried getting a couple extra tie rods but they weren't willing to hand any extras over..LOL. Our son ordered one from the Ford Dealer in Moab hoping it would work but it was too short...dang it. Could have been a pretty easy fix. Not complaining though Rivian did take care very good care of us.
@@lesleythornton2874 Glad to see you here in the comment section. Any idea when the aftermarket will respond, and create non authorized repair parts?
@@om617yota8 Rivian told us it will be about a year. They are wanting to get 25,000 on the road first.
Well I’m subscribed now!!! Trail mater MacGyver holly cow!!! That high frequency welding sounds awesome
,,,good job, was his extension cord too short ?...lol.. keep safe and have a great week...
@George Vinson or bring a fuel powered generator to charge the electric vehicle
@@kdoeone battery packs exist that can be pre-charged to take to someone tesla does that. not saying that's what they would do since a generator is probably easier but uknown always an option
@@kdoeone Did you watch the video? The truck had charge.
@George Vinson Why would it need to be gas-powered?
EV drivers hardly ever run out of power in the main battery. They’re usually very aware of their situation. On slow speeds the range goes up immensely and the power goes up downhill . The most common reason an EV breaks down is the 12v battery which is needed for the switches. The fix is easy just like on ice cars. The same goes for insufficient axles. The art is to know when not to use the torque you have.
8:43 … right there …. RIGHT THERE!!! Is why I too got myself a NP205 to twin stick … Walk like an Egyptian 🕺🏻🕺🏻🕺🏻💁🏻♂️
Old Tech rescues New Tech...classic. Surprised that the "smart" crawl mode couldn't keep the front tire from spinning on the steep grade lol...can't beat real lockers ;)
you are comparing a stock production vehicle with stock tyres to a custom built trail recovery vehicle or any trail vehicle?
@@swapnilmankame obviously the stock EV truck was not designed to drive on trails like this... But it had plenty of traction to get up the incline without the help of a winch if the 4x4 system was better at preventing wheel slip 🙂
And yet stil the part that broke( and looked small) was old tech, cant wait to see a stript out rivian on 44" tyres
100$k trucks lol

Yes sir, camera persons on all the recovery channels really gots ta hustle
Nice little ride along, tho it would seem folks know what Trailmater is by all the waves & no Karen's screaming "you're going the wrong way!", lol !! Thanx !
3 days after the video posts and the t-shirts are sold out 😳 guess I should have been quicker 😩😭 Love me some Rory and Trail Mater! 🥰
The more people buy them and the longer they are around, the easier it'll get to find parts!
Not many in junk yards yet! Lol
@@jim-ce5kt I'm talking many years, yeah can't hold my breath that long
I am excited to stop at the shop and pick up a shirt on my next trip down.
Nice to see you doing milk float recoveries now mate. 🤣🤣🤣🤣
Just ordered me a sweet new t-shirt!!!! Another great video!!!
Old school repair on modern technology. Love it!
Love the Suspension shot !! =)
Can't beat old tech. Simple ingenuity, easy to fix, parts easily fixable and replaceable; that's real sustainability.
I love it when Rory and Mike get an idea....LOL !! Good video fellas!!
They're cool, but they weigh over 7000 lbs, which is SuperDuty/ HD kind of weight; and that tie rod looks awfully thin for something so heavy and with so much power. I know their forged control arms look a little more beefy-- but that tie rod is embarrassingly small. lol
That tie rod looks like a kid's atv tie rod.
Agree. That tie rod looks way too small for handling the forces of that much weight.
It reminds me of the pencil thin ones the GM 2500s have.
I agree. Way too small. Doesn't take an engineering degree to see that.
True, did you notice the size of the brake caliper?
New Broncos are having the same problem. Manufacturers are cutting weight and costs in the wrong places.
Has nothing to do with the potential for the rest of the vehicle.
That RC car comment at the very end was spot on. Funny stuff to think about right there. Great job on this rescue/repair.
Third World answers to First World issues 👍😜
ev saved by using arcing electricity ! 😂
That pause and smile after he said what he's rescuing lol.
Also a chromemoly spacer for 3rd gear to avoid their snapring failure issue.
so sorry your Jeep broke down Mike! Glad it worked after it cooled off. What a great trail fix Rory! Never ever ceases to amaze me what you can do!
Love your content.
Rory singlehandedly kickstarting the Rivian off road upgrade market!
@@1one3_Racing I tow heavy, 15,000 lbs (6800 k)
I saw a tow test for the Rivian and it didn't make it to the place they were going to do the test.
I love your New Shirts, I will be getting me one soon, Your my Favorite Recovery Guy,

Out of curiosity, how often do people run out of fuel on the tracks?
Thank You for showing another fine recovery , also for showing "bush" fixes . after all the goal is to get home with out doing any more damage
It would be interesting to see how well an EV handles on a trail. Using a winch, it’s torque, and dealing with a multi day adventure like MOAB.
A multi day adventure I assume would go poorly
@@boejiden1065 EVs don't lose range going slowly. How many multi day adventures in MOAB cover 300 miles?
