Unlike my other builds I have not yet got this fully planned out so not sure how big its going to end up (but yeah, probably gonna be big 😅). Want to test if I get any serious performance hits once this main section is all built and lit. I do have concerns as I am having to use a lot of lights and also most rooms will need a lot of decoration to stop them looking plain and empty. Hopefully as the vault is in its own world space it will be fine and won’t cause my PC to burst into flames trying to run it 🤣🧯.
Glad you are enjoying it seeing all the light fixtures being placed… I am not 😉🤣. Would much rather do the lighting ‘off camera’ so I am little less rushed, there’s a few wonky lights and dark patches in the vids but hope to get them sorted out when I start to decorate. I think getting this place lit is one of its biggest challenges so feel I need to show how I am trying to deal with it, that and the builds look so much worst without it! 😅
I love how half of this build is dedicated to lighting. Really highlights how bad the workshop lights are, thank god I use a mod that just doubles their radius.
I can imagine a lot of people (myself included for a long time) were put off from trying to build a vault due to just how bad the vanilla options are, and so wanted to show the process I used in the hopes it might help out some fellow vault builders. Feel I managed to do an alright job getting the place lit without resorting to plastering lights everywhere, but using one of the various lighting mods is the easier and probably better way of doing it 😉👍.
I think anything would have been better than what we got lighting wise with this DLC, simply increasing the radius of each light would have made a huge difference. Agree that having ambient lighting built into some of the vault pieces would have been a nice touch, especially for larger spaces like the Atrium and wide corridor peices 👍.
Huh. I never thought of using garden plots like that for making flora decor in the atrium. That's a little trick I'll have to steal, I mean borrow, for my next build. And yet again you smash another one of my worries. I always worry about making the vault too tall. Too many stairs to climb, and more importantly where to fit them. Then here's you making a like four story vault without a worry in the world!
Feel free to borrow or steal anything you like, I partly upload these in the hopes people find them useful or provide ideas they can use in their own builds 👍😁. I feel like the Atrium should be a centre piece of the vault so it had to be quite big! Was a little concerned with there only being two staircases, but a few of the exits will lead to corridors that loop back to the other floors so the settlers have a few options for getting around. Glad you liked the garden plots, thought they helped break up the Atrium floor and should look quite nice once decorated.
i love your build i love seeing you build other builders increase the speed of the picture and i like less at that speed, ps when i told you i was using streetlights and well that's only when I'm building so when I'm done I delete and install other more suitable ones, thanks for sharing and I can't wait to see what's next
Thanks! I agree with your thoughts on speeded up building sections. If I am watching a video of someone build its because I want to see how they did something, the viewer can always set the video to a higher playback speed if they think things are going a little slow. Admittedly my recent vault vids have been a little on the long side, so don’t begrudge anyone who does watch them at a higher speed 🤣. I now also understand what you meant about using the streetlights at the vault and makes far more sense! After watching and enjoying so many of your builds it did not seem like something you would normally do and sounded strange to me 😉. Thanks for checking out the build and great to hear you are looking forward to seeing more! 😁
Do you have creation kit? Maybe take a look at vault 81 or 114, see how those cells are lit... Ha! Everybody is talking about the lighting, also wanted to add, the structure looks really cool and those dirt plots are an awesome idea, looking forward to the finished vault
I do and have… basically they sort of cheat! There are a whole bunch of invisible light sources placed around to provide ambient lighting, and of course you can edit the strength and direction of these to even out dark spots and not have patches that are over bright Sadly this is not an effect I think I can replicate in game. Hiding the brighter hanging light bulbs in more vault appropriate lights has been then best I have been able to come up with so far 😔. Great to hear are you liking how the place is developing and looking forward to seeing how it turns out - many thanks! 👍
Good job - as always. I wonder if you can make living in a Vault look cozy in the end. Usually all your settlements look like some place I would want to live in once the apocalypse comes (and even before).
Thanks! Not sure if I would class it as cosy but hoping to at least achieve a lived-in feel with the finished build similar to my above ground settlements 🤞. Unlike previous series I have felt the need to add furnishing to some parts (currently parts 4 & 5), as plain empty vault rooms leave a lot up to the imagination. Hopefully if you get around to checking them out, they will give an indication of how the finished build will look and feel 😊.
Hey! I started building in fallout 4 recently, thus leading to watching your videos.. and you've been a huge inspiration so far haha. I really like your content, and seeing how quickly and smartly you build. It's nice having no voice and no music sometimes, relaxing even. It's like we're immersed in your mind at the moment you're building lol also- I know you get a lot of questions, I apologize in advance, from what I read you spawn objects with a command and I was wondering what is the form ID of that thing at 15:34? the trick with the conduits really amazed me. I'll definitely keep this in mind for my builds, it looks so useful! we don't have enough hanging lights in this game :( (also, what are these "movement step changed to [...]? what does this do? I've never seen this in Place everywhere I'm very intrigued) anyways..keep it up and thanks for uploading. Really looking forward your tour in Vault 88, I discovered this location the other day and started building right away haha..I was soo lost at first, now I feel quite inspired!
The form ID for the hanging vault light poles are 0020A13A (Long) and 0020A0EA (Short). Once spawned they cannot normally be moved unless using console commands (which can be really fiddly), but enabling Place Everywhere’s ‘Extra Object Selection’ mode allows you move them as normal objects. Place Everywhere has a ‘Precise Movement’ feature which allows you to shift objects in various directions. Those ‘movement step changed to’ messages are just where I was increasing the distance that this function moves an object, and is how the conduit jumps up into position in two steps (14:50). Great to hear you have been enjoying the vid’s and that they been able to provide some ideas, and hope your vault build goes well 😀👍
Played the game through a couple of times on older consoles but never bought the season pass. Was released on PS plus Extra with an offer on te season pass so thought I'd give it a go. Spent ages building my first '88 vault, three storeys with an extra garden area and loads of everything and tons of beds. Thought that i could start a town but couldn't attract enough settlers. Read up on it and discovered there is a small limit to the numbers in each settlement. They missed a trick there. Would have been fun to build and run a massive settlement.
Ohhhh!! I thought those roof things were individual pieces to make stairs-the top of it :s I haven't started building properly here yet but the parts are curious, like how the rooms will connect and also domestic-utiility hallways; I wouldn't know what's to connect to the reception bit nor if it matters lol. Thanks
It can take a little while to get used to how some of the pieces fit together, especially as some parts need to be placed first in order to act as snap points for others. I am sure after a little experimentation you’ll quickly get the hang of it 👍
I've thought to build a giant vault myself in Vault 88, but I noticed it would be too much work and it would kill my machine's performance really bad. Another idea I had was just build a city down there, made of wood and scrap metal (I got this inspiration from that underground city from Ben 10 Omniverse). Somehow, it isn't as demanding to performance, if you keep it simple, without too much details.
Building a vault can be challenging and is not helped by the limited selection of pieces the game gives us combined with its awful options… Although it did take a long time (around 3 months) really pleased with how my vault ended up, with the performance only minorly dropping in a few spots. Could certainly see an underground slum city working in this location, hope it turned out well for you 👍.
I can almost picture the Vault-Tec advertising posters “Welcome to Vault 88, your new home. Semi-permanent sight damage due to prolonged poor lighting is a small price to pay to keep you safe from the nuclear apocalypse… right?” 🤣
Never understood why they made all the vault lighting so dim, some of the lights radius are so small they are practically not worth using, or you have to plaster every ceiling panel with a light source 😔.
@@FiddleflapsVids Also the cave is way bigger than it needs to be. I was building a huge vault and had lots of ideas, just to realise that I can't get them done because I almost reached the limit. Most of my rooms are empty. When I tired to fix this by making the vault smaller, parts wouldn't snap and align properly. This plus the lights and the constant shortage of material made me lose it after a few hours, so I just went and shot the overseer. Got the last trophy and left the place.
How do you place like the living quarer or nursery pieces on a second floor I managed to build a scecond floor but all I can lay down is the ceiling/floor hybrid floor thing. I wanted to use that quarter prefab pieces on a 2nd floor how do I do that? What has to go underneath ist?
You will need to use doorways to act as snap points for your rooms either from an Atrium or a Hallway section, I believe the next part of the series covers building the Residential Area which is two floors and shows this 👍.

I laughed at that first bulb placement. Just the idea of Vault Tec thinking a simple filament bulb is enough to light a high vaulted atrium.
Lol, maybe Vault-Tec are testing if ‘accidental’ trips and falls from poor lighting could be an ideal way to control the vaults population levels 😉🤣
