Restoring these alloy MTB rims with JB Weld and elbow grease

  • No! We did not actually list these for sale on Craigslist. This video was just for fun. Today, Kevin terrorizes my workshop, trying to restore these alloy mountain bike wheels so they at least look new.
Years ago, Kevin used to repair alloy car wheels for a living, so I challenged him to repair a set of bike wheels. The wheel had a huge dent in it, and a nice split where it was joined during manufacturing. The wheel would not hold air, even with plenty of sealant. Kevin was able to get the wheel looking good again, and even hold air! But did that new paint job survive the rigors of mounting a tire? Watch to find out.

That came out looking good! I have been enjoying your vids during this quarantine. You might already know all of these tips for having zero tape leaks but I thought I'd share my experience with it:
Sleeved, non welded rims commonly leak even without damage. Luckily some rim manufacturers use a line of epoxy over the seam on the inside of the rim to combat leaking. For non sealed/non welded seam rims I just run the tape all the way up the side of the bead flush with the lip. Use tape that's 2/3 the internal width of the rim and run it along each side of the rim overlapping in the middle. Also, use one quick layer of electrical tape over the eyelets before you use the tubeless tape (helps prevent leaks if you accidentally puncture the tubeless tape with a tire lever....side note: I like using a Predro's tire lever with the tip filed down a few mm for when I'm working with a shallow bead seat rim so that I don't puncture someone's tape). Lastly, use a shop towel with rubbing alcohol as an applicator/squeegee to press the tubeless tape down as you go (prevents wrinkles in tape). AND one last thing.... use your torch and heat up the end of a metal pick to poke the hole in the tape for the valve hole...that keeps it from splitting and cauterizes the tape for no splitting or leaking later.

I saw this and another RUclips video that took a dent out with adjustable wrenches, screw drives and hammers. I used a 4.5” heavy duty steel C-clamp and two metal plates. I sandwiched the rim between the metal plates, then the C-clamp on the metal plates and cranked it down. It only took two attempts. The first got the dent partly out and the second finished it. Almost perfectly straight with barely a scratch!!

I once used JB weld to fix a crack on timing chain cover on a Nissan 4 banger in 91 single cab pick up because the cover was no longer produced. It worked fine up until I got rid of it. Jb weld is amazing stuff
