My mother and I had the opportunity to live with Manuel, he was a wonderful person. I remember he would always give my son and I ice cream whenever he saw us. May he rest in peace.
I have been a customer for over forty-two years and my meal was always made extra special when Manuel was in the house. Free shots and beer, and a handful of candy after paying your bill. Rest in Peace Manuel Rojas, you are missed.
THANK YOU SOOOO MUCH!!! THIS WAS MY FIRST TRUE BOXBOY EMPLOYER!!!......AND I WAS HELPING CUSTOMERS OUTSIDE!!!....at 14 years old and once I turned 16 I could get a real job!! Inside!!....HAPPY DAYS!!!
My dad was born in Boyle heights during the thirties any would find little places like this so in 1968 he took me there and I had my 1st hollenback. Cost was 65 cents and so for under a dollar My dad could feed me. I remember the manny special and I believe it was a $1.25 but sure it was $1.35 only. My dad loved the state picado there but used to tell Manny that it was not spicy enough so one day I don't know what manual put in that steak picado because it was melting the spoon my dad was using but my dad was still eating and sweating .. drinking water like I've never seen him before. So manual comes up to my dad says so you crazy Russian what do you think now about my Steak picado now. My dad looked at him and said d*** best steak picado I've ever had... Every time I come here make up just like this
1985, that was the last time I was there. Man, that's going on 30 years! My dad took me when I was 16. I'd been there a few times before that, but it's been so long since I was there that 1) there's no way I remember what I ordered, and 2) I can't remember how it tasted. It's definitely time to hit this place up again. I'm about 40 mts away. No excuses, lol.
Is the challenge still eat a Manuel's Special get one Free? I remember doing that challenge when I was 16. I don't know how but I finished it. When they made us a second one to go I was feeling pukey. I said I'm going to go wait but the car. Well, it didn't go so well. Luckily there was a large bag in the trunk and a dumpster nearby. Oh, it was delicious I just stuffed myself. I remember Manny made a big deal over me finishing the whole thing. I was a little Itty bitty thing back then. Gosh, I got so sick in that parking lot. I couldn't go back there for years. But then I stuck to the Hollenbeck and I never could finish it. Even that was too big. Good memories there growing up.
that place is so good, they cater to my work on some thursdays for for nobody getting hurt at work. They were teir yesterday. Always friendly and the food is awsome. The red salsa they have and the guacamole is off the chain.
This is about as big as the "Fool's Gold Loaf," which was a sandwich Elvis Presley (1935-1977) had famously ordered at the Colorado Mine Co. restaurant in Denver, CO. That was a peanut-butter, bacon and jam sandwich on sourdough bread (1 pound each of all condiments on the 1 pound loaf - 4 pounds total). The Manuel's Special Burrito is 5 pounds.
I used to live a few blocks down and went to the school right next to it when I was a little kid. I remember after school. I would slowly walk past him so he could notice me, because he would stop me and say in Spanish “WAIT, I NEED TO GIVE YOU SOMETHING” and he would come back with a popsicle. RIP Manny
Good man. I've had many many of Manuals "special" nips of Brandy with him. Then he quit sipping along with you some time ago. Thanks Manny for the years and years of good food and just plain BS sessions.
honestly i just went there and the beans were out of the can, the chili verde tasted like it was hard, you get one refill, but the only two good things about it was the rice and that you paid for the amount of food and not to taste. oh and for how much money they make, they should make it bigger!
Leave off the rice, rice is not an ingredient for burritos, rice is a volumizer / filler , dump on some Beef Carne instead. Sprinkle chopped onions in there , and cover it with shredded cheese.
What is it about American food looking so gross and unappealing?? And the fact that meat and poultry in the US is contaminated with all sorts of god knows what just makes me hurl, seeing these ppl shovel it in their mouths
