I have a canon 600d and use my tamron 17-50 vc as my main lens. Very clear images and great for low light. I mostly do landscapes and for the money I paid the lens really is excellent. I have had the issue of the lens hunting (focus) but only inside and close subject. Id recommend this lens to anyone wanting to upgrade from a 18-55 is but not wanting to spend too much.
This review is overall pretty bad it doesn't deal with any kind of image quality chromatic aberration specifically, soft edges, vignetting things of that nature. Moreover, vc on Tamron stands for vibration compensation, but not so much my gripe. I was really bugged when he said the focusing ring was hard to turn when it was on autofocus. A good reviewer would let you know it is because it doesn't have full time manual focus and by doing so you can damage the focus motor. I don't deem this review at all but more of a personal opinion in that regard it is a good video but since it is called a review in the title I'm going to give it a thumbs down.
On APSC you have to multiply the focal length by 1.6 so your 17mm becomes 27.2mm equivalent, and 55mm becomes 80mm equivalent. Great lens, you can pick one up pre-owned for around $150 now.
if camera is not moving at all on a tripod, you're better off not using IS (VC), but if you are panning and tilting, it will have the same effect as if handheld - smoother footage.
From what I've heard, the VC-version is the soft one and the non-VC is supposed to be sharper. But maybe there are newer versions of the VC one? And you say it's hard to focus manual with the lens on autofocus, but that's because there's no manual override, so it's a very bad idea to even try to manual focus with it on auto.
you're right about that i spoke to an camera specialist at this camera rental place and he said i need a full frame camera and a crop sensor camera with 2 lens for each other them. he said with the full frame i need 24-70 and a 50mm and on the crop sensor i need 17-55 and the 35mm and 85mm only if i want that but he said that's mainly for close ups and the 35mm is for a nice wide angle. he recommended the canon 80d and the canon 6d mark 2 and that's it no need to buy all those camera bodies and camera lens. try them all out and which one you like the most that's the one you keep. he said 3 or 4 lens is alright but people with 6 or more lens then they're professional photographers and they get paid for their work so they can buy all those lens but if you're a hobbyist who like taking pictures stick with 3 or 4 lens. he said the tamron 18-200 is only good for taking pictures in the day time and not at night. we was talking for a very long time i can't wait to test all these camera lens out
Hey guys, I have 18-135 IS Canon lens now. Thinking to switch this one but I'm concerned about the internal noise, is it so loud so makes it difficult to shoot videos?
***** awesome!!! one more question.. haha i was looking at the rokinon 16mm lens... would this be a wiser choice? just want to make sure before i spen the money haha thanks brotha. great channel. very helpful even for an automotive shooter!!
Its just a review on what he feels about the lens. You honestly don't expect him to see the same things the way you do, do you? You don't have to be so aggressive. It's a good review about the lens. Don't be so negative.
Great video, it helped me purchase this lens for my T3i - The pictures are very sharp using this lens! One quick observation - All the pictures that I shot at f/2.8 is very dark, even in Aperture mode. Ofcourse, I can bump up the exposure a level up, but is that what you see in your lens too?
If you shoot a Full Frame camera, then crop the entire video in post-production to match the 1.5x or 1.6x of an APS-C, are you going to get adequate quality? Do little problems arise?
I'm so confused now...I've always been told that when using built-in stabilizers (such as VC and IS) when on a tripod or another stabilizer, that the built-in IS over compensates and makes it look a little jerky and unnatural. Can you please shed some light on this? Thank you!
HEY CALEB! this one or the sigma version??? need to decide for one right now, I have heard in other reviews that this one is a little bit soft when wide open
+shanu khalifa 40mm is a lot sharper at 2.8 but does not have IS,.. If you use a stabilizer or gimbal for video, then the lack of IS should not be isue. If not go for 17-50mm. Now I see this coment is one year old, but maybe will help somebody else.
Hi! I'm getting my first DSLR, I've decided to buy the Canon 70D but I am kind of lost about the lens I should start with, I am doing a documentary film and I can only afford one lens ($300-500 aprox). I've read that a kit lens is a good way to start in general, I've thought about the 18-135mm IS STM, but it has a f3.5/5.6 maximum aperture and I am worried that it might not be quite luminous. I think I would probably take it with that kit lens (to get into the DSLR game) if it weren't for the fact that I need a lens for filming this specific proyect. I know that just one lens is not enough, but I've also got a Panasonic camcorder available (maybe to film the long shots with it...). I am also thinking about getting an old manual prime lens too (or two haha). What would you recommend? This Tamron lens would be ok? Sorry for the long text ^^. I hope I make myself understood, since english is not my first language. Muchísimas gracias in advance ;)
hi sir DSLRguide, Do you have any ideas for non-VC version for low light to dark situations? I know the VC is better on low lights, but will at least the non-VC produce good image too? or will they result bad?
Press the lens release button and it will manually focus while still set to AF. (Don't worry, your lens won't fall off) This is very easy on a Pentax camera as the lens release button is on the users right-hand side of the lens.
Thanks for this really good looking review but I'm pretty sure you can get this lens much cheaper than 600 Bucks. Here in Germany it retails for only 359,99 for the VC Version thats about 478,58 Dollars.
Hey Caleb. Looking to get this lens as a crash lens for night club work on my C100, so I wont damage any nice glass. I'm in doubt with the small turn on the focus ring though. Did you have a problem with it and is it possible to get focus? (Not looking at any smooth focus pulls, just handheld event videography)
if i connect the metabones speed booster canon ef to the gh4. and i take this lens. it will work? and if it will work. i can control on the lens from the camera? thank you/
I've been looking more into shooting mini films, potential music videos and what-not... Would this lens be recommended for that? I don't really have the proper programs yet for color editing and what-not so I lack that option still to really edit my videos in full... But I do have now the 50mm 1.8 lens.. and the 18-55 lens and 18-133 lens.. Not too happy with the shots from them for certain things.. LOVE the 50mm for certain shots.. I mean it all depends.. but Overall I want a good video shoot lens. Is this the one?
+Peter Lanza Hey, if your looking to shoot video Vintage Glass is Really great. The glass is just as good if not better than today, in video you will be shooting in manual focus & these are great for that to. Check out the Helios 44-2, you will need an adapter but they are dirt cheap. The Helios is 58mm has a circular broken which is really cool & only about $30 on eBay. Mine was $40 with an adapter. But Glass is the main thing, & knowing your camera. Going to need to master software to
it will work but it'll have a vignetting on the corner because d750 is a full frame camera. you can have the tamron 24-70 VC for fx cameras. this lens is made for dx/aps-c
wow! what is with the hate from people who dont know jack about motors? you wont hurt a motor by turning it. You may damage the gears that connect the motor to the focus ring....
Hi, I know this video is supposed to be for video shooters, but I am just wondering if you have an idea about still shooting, if this is a good option. I heard the non VC is sharper. I am not looking for a super sharp lens, if this can for example be sharper than the kit lens, then that should be enough for me. Thanks!
Khalid Assakour I think, its better to use for photos, in videos you can hear the af motor, it works, but its not video lens, but it depends on camera, I made one video with this lens, the last one on my channel, but the first videos from bus i took with the phone and then used the canon 700d and this lens, for photos its great, if you buy it, you probably never use your kit lens again ;) m.flickr.com/#/photos/scifuxa/30481694820/
Whos the stupid one? The real negatives one? Ridiculous comment or video? i dont understand. sorry for my bad english. btw this video is helpful to me. for the AF part, u need to switch on the auto focus to enable to use the auto track function that Canon 70D have for video mode. sometime it might take awhile to detect the focus with the auto track, face track, touch screen focus etc while you shooting an event in a low light conditions. what we videographer call "breathing". so in this case, you have to very quickly do a manual focus to catch the "moment". so if you can adjust the focus while the auto focus is on. that might help. some lens do have this feature.. And for the FF part. that might also be helpful to those crop sensor user that going to upgrade to full frame after invested so many aps-c lenses and thought of just buying an extension tubes to save money. so thats the result.

I have the VC version, and find it to be sharp enough for APS-C sensors, and VC great for an all purpose lens.
Would you recommend this over the Sigma 17-50 OS? For video

How would you compare this to Sigma 17-50 f2.8? I'm confuse which one to buy for my Nikon D7100. Thanks!
Hey guys, I have 18-135 IS Canon lens now. Thinking to switch this one but I'm concerned about the internal noise, is it so loud so makes it difficult to shoot videos?
would you recommend this to someone shooting car features and car shows?
Yes, this would be a great option if you have an APS-C sensor size.
***** awesome.. i have a 60d and the only lens i have is a 50mm. you think this would be a perfect pair?
***** Go for it!
***** awesome!!! one more question.. haha i was looking at the rokinon 16mm lens... would this be a wiser choice? just want to make sure before i spen the money haha thanks brotha. great channel. very helpful even for an automotive shooter!!
***** I would probably stick with the 17-50. You get a nice zoom range and that vibration control is killer.
Vc is very useful even at low shutter speed. I often take pictures in 5/1 shutter speeds and if vc is on - no image blurr...!!!! Vc is great
Would have preferred to see it against the 18-55 kit, as that's the likely upgrade route BUT top video, thanks!
Its just a review on what he feels about the lens. You honestly don't expect him to see the same things the way you do, do you? You don't have to be so aggressive. It's a good review about the lens. Don't be so negative.

I have the non VC version, it's great. Sharp lens, love the f/2.8 and never feel like I need the VC anyways :)
Trying to find a great lens for a Blackmagic-filmed movie and this may be the ticket!
Apparently the latest batch of the VC is alot more sharper and improved than the past VC
Can I shoot hand held video with Non VC version with Nikon 7200
awesome lens still in2019
삶의 의미 로고 I still love this lens
If you shoot a Full Frame camera, then crop the entire video in post-production to match the 1.5x or 1.6x of an APS-C, are you going to get adequate quality? Do little problems arise?
Hi caleb! What about the focus breathing? Is it notiable and looks good in video works? And about the autofocus?
did you really just try to change focus manually when you had it set to auto....
Thats a good way to break the motor.
motors dont break just because you turn them.....if he were to ram that sucker side to side he MIGHT break the GEARs...it wont hurt the motor.
I'm so confused now...I've always been told that when using built-in stabilizers (such as VC and IS) when on a tripod or another stabilizer, that the built-in IS over compensates and makes it look a little jerky and unnatural. Can you please shed some light on this? Thank you!
So this lens is really good for the asp-c crop sensor and what you think about the tamron 10-24
HEY CALEB! this one or the sigma version??? need to decide for one right now, I have heard in other reviews that this one is a little bit soft when wide open
Hello bro, i want ask about the VC, is that the VC make noise when its turn on?
What do you shoot your videos with? the background always has a nice blur.
Would you recommend the non-VC version to save money or is it not worth it?
softer than the VC? as what I have read, it is the other way around. the VC is softer than non-VC.
What about dropping while using the VC? Somebody, told me that the VC of this lenses causes dropping if it´s on
is this true?
my zoom ring is tight a bit. not smooth...is it true
this tamron 2.8 or canon 40mm 2.8 for video quality which one is better.
+shanu khalifa 40mm is a lot sharper at 2.8 but does not have IS,.. If you use a stabilizer or gimbal for video, then the lack of IS should not be isue. If not go for 17-50mm. Now I see this coment is one year old, but maybe will help somebody else.
+Raymond27 too late reply I took 40mm and I regret.
sigma 24;70 mm bether than those

Muchas gracias por tu respuesta!
PD: Tú español es muy bueno! ;)
I read in a lot of reviews that the VC is quite loud. I film a lot of live music, do you think this would be a problem?
This lens does NOT have full time manual focus override. If you try to manually focus while in AF mode, you could damage the lens.
hi sir DSLRguide,
Do you have any ideas for non-VC version for low light to dark situations? I know the VC is better on low lights, but will at least the non-VC produce good image too? or will they result bad?
Hi , is this suitable for the actual day wedding's shooting?
is this great lens for night stars timelapse ??
Would you recommend this for indoor portrait shots?
Does this lens have fast (or at least, faster) autofocus than the nikon lenses?
In the Made in china or Made un japan version?
please help me, is this much better than my kit lens, the canon 18-135? Should i replace it for this one? Thanks
Charly
joining the question. is this better than 18-135 STM in terms of quality and all around use ?
TheDarkKnight03 I wouldn't say it is much better, but the constant F2.8 is very nice.
which one is sharper
this tamron or canon pancake 24mm 2.8 lens
Press the lens release button and it will manually focus while still set to AF.

This is very easy on a Pentax camera as the lens release button is on the users right-hand side of the lens.
Compare this lens to the sigma 17-50! Please
dont do the sigma.. trust me
***** why?
Have you ever used the pre VC version for 4k video.
VC is not working on the BMPCC 6k Pro
Does this have any compatibility issues with the Nikon D5300?
is it good in low light situations
Thanks for this really good looking review but I'm pretty sure you can get this lens much cheaper than 600 Bucks. Here in Germany it retails for only 359,99 for the VC Version thats about 478,58 Dollars.
Is this good for astrophotography? Does it mount on Canon EOS Rebel T5?
Hey Caleb. Looking to get this lens as a crash lens for night club work on my C100, so I wont damage any nice glass. I'm in doubt with the small turn on the focus ring though. Did you have a problem with it and is it possible to get focus? (Not looking at any smooth focus pulls, just handheld event videography)
Richo Hald I think you'll be fine. The focus ring is pretty small on my Tamron 24-70 and it doesn't bother me at all.
Thank you for sharing this review.
Hl
D70 camera with Canon
Do you have a benefit Propagation 24-70
And if it does not work what are the appropriate lens for my camera type
Why do you cover the brand name and model number of the cameras you have?
How does it compare to the 17-50 Sigma?
yes, i have the same problem.. at f2.8 pics are dark..
When it autofocuses in video mode does it make noise?
this work with my nikon-d3100?
usually i shoot indoor event, especially low light condition
Yes there is a Nikon version.

I have the Nikon d750. So you're saying this lens won't work with this right?
it will work but it'll have a vignetting on the corner because d750 is a full frame camera. you can have the tamron 24-70 VC for fx cameras. this lens is made for dx/aps-c

Would this be good with a metabones speed booster on the black magic pocket cinema camera?
I haven't tried it, but I would think they would make a great pair.
how is the bokeh on 50mm ?
Whos the stupid one?
The real negatives one?
Ridiculous comment or video?
i dont understand. sorry for my bad english.
btw this video is helpful to me. for the AF part, u need to switch on the auto focus to enable to use the auto track function that Canon 70D have for video mode. sometime it might take awhile to detect the focus with the auto track, face track, touch screen focus etc while you shooting an event in a low light conditions. what we videographer call "breathing". so in this case, you have to very quickly do a manual focus to catch the "moment". so if you can adjust the focus while the auto focus is on. that might help. some lens do have this feature..

what about the sigma 17-50
Thanks sir
Aaah man don't move that focus ring while the AF is on!! You can burn down the focus motor! This lens simply doesn't support full-time manual focusing..! Thanks for the review anyway!
Thank you
HI caleb, does this lens work well with a GH4 4k videos and photos?
Yes, it should work. Especially with the metabones speedbooster. I would get in touch with Metabones to confirm...
***** Thankyou!!
***** Have you tested it with the GH4?
Lee Gee I have not tested it with the GH4 so I couldn't tell you :-(
Actually the non-vc is sharper than de vc one
If your just getting this for Photos I would get the 17-55, f2.8. Tack sharp, great Bokeh ,,
Could only see a little on your reply, what would be the downside of this Lens ? I don't have the VC version ( heard it wasn't great before I bought it ) don't really see any downside to this lens ??
So would my canon t3i be compatible or not?
Yes, that would be compatible.
Will this work on my gh4 with the fotodiox adapter?
Sort of... You won't be able to change the aperture and use auto focus. I would check out the Canon to MFT speedbooster from Metabones. With the Metabones adapter you can use the lens to the fullest.
f2.8 is not sufficient for a crop camera. It is the standard for a pro full frame lens. On a crop camera your going to need f2 or lower aperture. The new Sigma ART series is the first professional zoom lenses specifically designed for a crop camera.
thanks man
can i use this lens in my canon 6d body ?
Somnath mohanta no
Didn't you listen to anything he said? Jesus...
WILL THIS LENS WORK WELL ON MY CANON 70D FOR SHOOTING RAP VIDEOS AND WEDDING?
+SQUIRREL V8ENT Yes.
+SQUIRREL V8ENT Yes.
+SQUIRREL V8ENT No it's only meant for rock videos and birthdays.
This DOESNT work with the 5D Mark III, returned mine today, it can't focus the 61 AF points, its not 100% compatilble.
model 24-70
Oakley Store The 24-70mm? I've had lots of friends with the 5D3 who own it say it works. Also works well on the 6D. Sorry to hear yours didn't!
***** Yep, the 24 70 vc can't work with all the focus points, just the center and recomposition, thanks for your answer!
what is vc
(help!)
Vibration Conpentation
Using VC for sweeping or panning footage looks awfull, as it would with any lens VC, VR, whatever...
somebody tell me? this one or sigma 17-50
Haven't tried the sigma, but I've been told the Tamron is much better.
sigma 24-70 mmm 2.8
Has anyone tried this lens on the BMPCC?
I just got this lens tonight....and I own a POCKET CINEMA MONSTER...I will definitely be trying them out together
donmiguie How do you manage aperture on m43 ? Is there any adaptor ring made for it ?
Vibration compensation... not control
This or the sigma?
Jesus Christ..... That's not a stuff focus ring.... you're not meant to turn it in AF mode.
You'll break the AF system eventually.
:)

Only an idiot tries to focus it manualy while its in auto.. what do you think the switch is for!!
Best way to nakker the motor and the lens.. but hey.. carry on !!
