Hi Jared, i can explain the fall off at the Edges. The Sigma is not perfectly planar corrected. That means the Focus area is not a plain but an orb. Objects that have the same Distance to the Camera are sharp. A plain surface like the table becomes soft at the Edges because the Distance to the Camera is longer an the area out of focus. This effect becomes weaker at the long end. So at 17mm with shallow depth of field you can get everything into focus by positioning it in a bow.
Apparently... the lens hood issue has been fixed by December 2018. I just bought (I feel like I stole) it for $285 new this month from B&H. On my D3300... that I seem to not feel the need to upgrade from... the colors and sharpness from the kit lens it replaces are noticed by even non photographers. This is a keeper for sure. I don't think I'll ever "upgrade" to full frame. For a crop sensor lens... it doesn't get much better than this. Very highly recommended for the enthusiast / hobby photographer. If I work with it a little bit, I (as a guy that use to shoot film and dabble in the darkroom) can get some fantastic shots of stuff no one else cares about. I won't get rid of it... even if I upgrade to the D7200 (now OOP) ... that is the plan. Happy shooting!
@@souvikbose3392 , yes it will fully autofocus. Be sure to read the instructions before you use it. When you put it on the camera, or before you start it up, make sure the stabilization and autofocus are turned off. Turn them on after you turn the camera on and it works great! Not a big deal once you get used to it.
I just got this lens for my D7100, I've had it for 2 weeks. Its a GREAT lens for "$800" or $400 on ebay; which I did. I've got 7 other lens, 5 nikons 2 sigmas. Most over $700. This is my fav lens!!! Buy this! Great day-out / travel lens.
You got me! I was about to write to him about that! Yes there is a lock! As you have noticed, the hood LOCKS after it is put on the lens! Anyways! You said it, enough I think for both of us!
I've got the older 18-50mm non HSM version of this lens and i love it. The difference between it and the kit lens is remarkable, and being able to shoot at f/2.8 is a life saver at gigs.
No problem with the hood and autofocus issue at all on my copy. The zoom and focus rings work great. I took about 300 shots and i can say 95% of them are excellent. The minor issue is some purple fringing at the edges of the images if shooting at wide aperture (2.8) when reflecting against strong sunlight but it does not appear in low light. Highly recommended for the price and versatility of the lens. It's a quality lens, after all!
I just bought this lens for my D3200 and for a hobbyist on a budget this lens is a 9.5 of 10 and a great upgrade from the kit 18-55 I really like it .....
It's 2018 and this lens is around $300-$350. Just bought it on Amazon for $300. A 2.8 that can go wide and tight for that price is a steal! Thanks Fro!
huge fan and I've consumed everything you have SL3 and Canon R/RP as I'm looking to upgrade... just stumbled into a good deal for this lens.. and WHAMMO! Jared had a video for it waiting for me for 9 years...!! THanks bro! keep up the hustle!!! SUCH a FAN!!! Fro DOES know photo!!!
I bought this Sigma lens for my Nikon and the lens hood fits perfect. I think this is a very nice lens, by the way, it is now much cheaper than a few years ago ( 300€ new), i think for this price there is no better standard zoom lens for dx.
I have the the Nikon d7000 as well. Your review on the Sigma was great but it got me thinking. I'm in the market for a new walk around lens and one that I can use at hockey games for a little wider prospective.. How much better is the Nikon 17-55 F2.8 over this lens? Here the price difference between the two lens is about $400. Is there significant light fall off around the edges with the Nikon and is it sharper overall?
Thanks Jared! I bought this lens finally, even after having lusted on the 18-35 for a week. I am glad I saved some money and makes sense what you said about the 18-35 in your review.
Andrei Petrea I am very happy with the 17-50, it's great for most shots and makes a great walk around lens. Highly recommend! It's pretty sharp too. You should also take a look at flikr for pics shot with this.
+Manpreet Singh I jut ordered the 18-35. I considered that it has a far better IQ than the 17-50. I am getting the delivery tommorrow. We'll see if it's worth it. Keep in touch :)
Hi Jared, Thanks for revising this lens. It made me confident with the decision of purchasing the Sigma 17-50 2.8 OS as my first lens along with my D7100. Btw, my copies lens hood attaches pretty solid. Looking forward to more video reviews and tutorials from you. Keep up the god work!
I once own a Sigma lens used with my Nikon D3000 - I can't remember what the lens specs were but I do remember that the lens hood was loose fitting until I took it back to the store I purchased it at and the clerk explained that you have to "push" with a little bit of force to make the hood "Click" tightly... Just a thought on this is all!
I want to buy this lens for indoor Volleyball with often very little room. I have a 50mm F1.8 and a 70-200 F2.8L but both are way too close on my 80D. Would you recommend this for the price???
I have noticed that people (including Jared) are complaining about their lens hood not fitting tightly on the lens but I don't seem to have that problem. As with every lens hood I use, I always make sure I twist the hood until I feel or hear a firm lock properly. yes the lens hood of this sigma 17-50 doesn't just sit easily on the lens as most other lens hoods I have used do, but like I said, a full twist should lock it firmly following a 'click' sound. From what JAred describes, I think his copy might have issues
if i buy this lens i'm not selling it but i just want a nice lens to take solid group photos and portraits and nice landscapes. so which one should i get the 17-50 or the 24-70 for my asp-c camera
I just called Sigma and spoke to the support guy. I brought up the issue with the hood and their reasoning was that with the 77mm filter size the hood was very large in diameter and was going to be difficult keep on when using black rapid straps because of the lens rubbing against your hip. My 2nd issue I brought up was the fact that the front element protrudes far enough forward that a shallow set filter will press against the front element creating a dark spot dead center.
If you have to choose between a used in good shape Nikon 17-55mm F2.8G\AF-S DX IF-ED and the Sigma 17-50mm f2.8 EX DC HSM. Which one I can find better image quality and be more sharp though the whole zoom range. Not for Video.
01/11/22: have two copies….both excellent. Gave one to my daughter a year ago to use with her D7100. I just picked up a new copy to use with my D500. Very pleased with the image quality.
Hi Jared, I'm watching this video where you're showing the loose fit, etc. of the hood. I have this lens and the hood "clicks on" and stays on securely. It also stays on in the stored position equally as well. Maybe yours was an "oops"? I'm still a learner and have enjoyed your videos. Thanks
@2:34 The term "breathe" is for focus breathing which refers to the slight zooming effect you have when you change focus. The right term should be zoom "creeping" where the lens zooms in when it is faced down due to gravity :)
I want to buy this fast zoom lens but only one thing I wanna know is ...how is the landscape experience in 17-24 mm range at low aperture f11-16 (i mean the degree of image distortion)?
I am looking for a cheap lens for concert photography to replace my 18-105 kit lens that comes with Nikon D7100. Would you say this Sigma offers noticable improvement over the kit lens?
Aside from better low light results in darker settings or better bokeh results when shooting portraits shooting 2.8, for other purposes such as landscapes or street shooting, where would the sweet spot be? Around 4.0? I would think 2.8 would be softer in those scenarios.
I just picked up a used Nikon 17-55 for $900. I sold my Tamron 17-50. I noticed when using the Tamron with IS on for video the camera picked up the IS sound when using the camera mic. It is like a loud humming sound that is constant. I wonder if the Sigma does the same.
Great. Thanks buddy for taking the time. BTW your Beginner's Guide is awesome! Learning so much from it. I think you mentioned in one of your podcast that a Flash Guide is in the works. If so, I'm definitely looking forward to it.
I've had this lens since Sept '09. It also had the loose lens hood issue. They now have a design change to correct this hood problem. I sent the lens in to Sigma last month and they have replaced the lens hood and the lens hood adapter. The hood stays properly on the lens now. Two of my friends also have this lens and the lens hood is not an issue.
My 3rd problem was a clicking sound when you take it out of auto focus and then bring it back and hit your AF on your camera. It's got a loud click when the AF re-engages.
I wanted to know how good the lens is I want to know if the pictures come out tack sharp cause my kit lens are nice but I wanted a better lens so please let me how good it is please
The 18-55 has a Variable Aperture, changes the amount of light let in, where the 17-55 Has an aperture of 2.8, where it stays locked in at 2.8 and lets alot of light in.
i have back focus in my copy i used it with Nikon D 7000. i used fine focus i set it to +20 but i did not satisfied do you think there a problem with my copy
I bought this lens brand new for $300. It complements my D7100 very well. Its more about versatility. The range and 2.8 aperture should be standard. A 25-75mm range on a crop sensor will get you out of tight spots where crowds are concern. That's the selling point of zooms.
So I have a T3i with the kit lens. I've just started using this spring and Summer. I just love to shoot. However, people are starting to notice my work and are wanting to pay me for it. I've already sold a couple photos. So, how big of a step up would this sigma lens be?
I bought It in 2011 and broke it last month after all this years , and i just orderd a used one in great condition from ebay 130$ for my sony a65, i think it is more than enough for my photography hobby ❤️
The equivalence thing means that the lens will provide the same field of view, not that the focal length changes. A 50mm lens on a DX sensor (or in DX crop mode on an FX sensor) will provide the same field of view in the finished image as using a 75mm lens on the full FX sensor -- you're essentially taking a crop out of the middle of the image, so you get a narrower field of view.
Yes, your copy is probably bad. If you're at 70mm on your 17-50mm lens, you've turned your zoom ring much to forcefully, and a bit of a "wable" is to be expected. In fact, I'd be pleased as punch to turn my 17-50 into a 17-70 with only a focus ring "wable" as a side effect.
I've been wondering what's the big difference in comparison with Canon version. It costs twice as much.. yes it has USM and full-time manual, but is it worth it? IQ and overall? I'm looking for a lens on my 7DMKII for fighting sports and event photography.
after a convincing review of the sigma 17-50 f2.8 i bought it only to find out about it's focusing dillema and Fro Knows Photo never address the problem. that sucks!
i dont think it fits the Fx sensor but if it does the wild amount of megapixels are really going to make the flaws apparent and if you have the money for the D800 you should just go with the 24-70 2.8
Jared, I have the HSM Sigma 50 1.4, and the autofocus doesnt accurately focus on the focus points. am i going to have the same issue with this one? i have a d5100. is there maybe something that needs cleaning on my camera or would you guess its the lens? my kit lens focuses fine
I have a Canon T7i. Would you recommend this lens as a replacement for the 18-55mm kit lens or would you recommend the Sigma 17-70mm contemporary f2.8-4 or even the new canon 18-135mm Nano USM.
I have read that and heard that the Tamron built-quality should be quite bad and it takes some very blurry and sometimes straight up bad quality images
Great honest review.. However, for the price of this lens and image quality it can produce, it's an easy 10. I appreciate the 24-70 is awesome on an FX camera (pointless and far too big on DX), it's also in another class and completely incomparable to the Sigma.. Moreover, the Sigma 17-50mm is a fantastic general purpose lens. It's relatively light (perfect for Travel etc) with superb IQ. A similar focal length lens from Nikon, the 17-55mm, is alot more expensive, relatively brittle and weighs a ton.. Great lens, but not for Travel [or every day] on a small DX camera.. In fact the Sigma is just compact enough, not to look ridiculous or feel impractical on a D7000.. Actually a additional battery grip would be a handy addition with this heavier lens if out for a long days shooting.
Have the 35mm 1.8 on my D7200 but need a Wider and Longer lens. Whats your opinion on the sigma 17-50 for (Replacing) it? I shoot portraits and astro but the 35mm on the DX isnt wide enough? Any thoughts?
Hi which is better for portrait and weddings sigma 17-50 f2.8 or the nikon 50 1.4g? I currently have nikon 18-55 and nikon 70-300 and I'm using nikon d5200. I don't know which to buy the sigma or the nikon. Thx.
Let me know what you go with and how you like it! I have literally the exact same setup! Now if I could input, the prime will have much better IQ but for weddings the zoom might allow you more flexibility in your shots.
Mafdy Ashraf Grab your kit lens and put it on you camera. Go to where youll be shooting and put your lens on the 35 and 50mm focal lengths. Choose whatever length you like the look of more. If you opt for a 50, you may want to consider the f/1.4 for a couple hundred more.
A prime will always be better than a zoom as far as image quality. However, being able to zoom in will mean you might get a shot you wouldnt have been able to get with the prime. Both lenses are fantastic, its up to you if you need the ultra tack sharpness of the prime
Not sure about Tamron quality, but I ended up going with the Sigma 17-70 and having issues with softness (making it unusable at F2.8) front focusing and now a high pitched squealing noise. My 2 cents is to stay clear of Sigma.
Been wanting to upgrade from my 18-55mm kit lens. Just placed an order for the Sigma 17-50mm after this review. Will take my chances and hopefully I will get a good copy.
This is probably a really NOOB question, but do these DSLR cameras store exposure settings in the "tags" of the digital file? Things like ISO, shutter speed, aperture setting....? I think I'll be getting the K-50 with kit lenses to start, but the $129 f1.8 50mm Pentax lens, as well as this lens, are on my wish list. I'll likely eventually upgrade to a K-3, and add a faster lens in the longer end of the zoom spectrum... I think the 50mm, this lens, and a "faster than kit" lens that goes out to 200-300mm, would be great compliments to the WR Pentax kit lenses. Any input on that would be great! Thanks so much for the videos.... keep shining bro...
Sorry for the late reply! I have a Canon and you can see the exposure settings if you are viewing your pictures and press the info button a few times. There I can view the exposure settings for each photo.
right on, I'm loving the K-50 and it stores the data as "tags" on the file, not sure if that's the proper term.... I also can't remember if it stores that info for sure on the JPEG files, but the RAW files have the info for sure, you can right click and choose properties of any file and it shows the info.... seems that with the right lenses I'll even be able to know the focal length of the shot. SOOOOOO much to learn, but over 1700 images shot so far in a few weeks.... stoked!
Hey Jared... I am curious to know if your sigma 17-50 F2.8 makes any rattling or clicking noise when auto-focusing in Video mode. Mine does have a clicking noise while autofocusing...
hey jared little help..i'm a beginner in photography.. i'm just wondering what is your usually setting for shooting daylight(sunny) and night time(indoor/outdoor) i'm using a canon 550D with sigma 17-50mm.. any advice..??? thanks you!
Hi Jared,
i can explain the fall off at the Edges.
Sigma have a tighter click than Canon and Nikon. You need to force the twist otherwise it's not locked properly.
Haha he said sigma
Apparently... the lens hood issue has been fixed by December 2018. I just bought (I feel like I stole) it for $285 new this month from B&H. On my D3300... that I seem to not feel the need to upgrade from... the colors and sharpness from the kit lens it replaces are noticed by even non photographers. This is a keeper for sure. Is this lens do fully autofocus on your nikon coz I want to buy it but see some reviews about af. I have d7200 is it fully compatible with this lens.
@@souvikbose3392 , yes it will fully autofocus. Be sure to read the instructions before you use it. @29erfast yes thats right sorry used the wrong word.
Guess they fixed the lens hood issue. My locks in place without a problem.
+KB2CWN Same here never had a problem with mine.
At first I didn't have the problem too. But now, after about half a year, it comes of way too easy.
Ohh my! Mr Jared doesn't even know the hood has a locker but he is trying a review on it >)

@ the lock is so fucking garbage lol, you touch it with the smallest amount of force and it comes clean off
I've got the older 18-50mm non HSM version of this lens and i love it. The difference between it and the kit lens is remarkable, and being able to shoot at f/2.8 is a life saver at gigs.
@corpsemunger you may need to manually set your meter but as long as its the same mount it should work.
@brandonbush1 thanks for pointing that out, I forgot that that lens did not have the nano coating.
No problem with the hood and autofocus issue at all on my copy. The zoom and focus rings work great. I took about 300 shots and i can say 95% of them are excellent. @TheVisualised Hey there, everything is fine with the other hoods i tried on other lenses.
I just bought this lens for my D3200 and for a hobbyist on a budget this lens is a 9.5 of 10 and a great upgrade from the kit 18-55
I really like it .....
The lens hood does stay in place, you need to ' click it into place' with a slight force
They all do not stay. Mine does not even have a click.
***** you need to force it abit, its actually super tight.
I agree mine clicks and stays in place, actually better than most of my other lenses.

does the auto focus keep up with shooting moving objects ?
mine does perfectly. I use it on my d500 now (d7100 before).

Can I use a Sigma 17-50mm F2.8 on my Nikon Z6? It is possible to shoot on autofocus as well?
nope its not a full frame lens you will get vignetting
This? Or the old 17-70?
Jared what sigma 18-50 did you say you really liked that was priced $399 but is discontinued. Was it the 2.8-4.5 or a fixed aperture version? Thx
This may sound like a stupid question, but is there a specific reason why Nikon makes an 18-55 as well as a 17-55?
The 18-55 has a Variable Aperture, changes the amount of light let in, where the 17-55 Has an aperture of 2.8, where it stays locked in at 2.8 and lets alot of light in.
i have back focus in my copy i used it with Nikon D 7000. i used fine focus i set it to +20 but i did not satisfied do you think there a problem with my copy
How would an apsc lens have the crop factor?
I bought this lens brand new for $300. It complements my D7100 very well. Its more about versatility. The range and 2.8 aperture should be standard. A 25-75mm range on a crop sensor will get you out of tight spots where crowds are concern. That's the selling point of zooms.
So I have a T3i with the kit lens. I've just started using this spring and Summer. I just love to shoot. However, people are starting to notice my work and are wanting to pay me for it. I've already sold a couple photos. So, how big of a step up would this sigma lens be?
I’ve seen so many reviews on this lens, and this one just convinced me to purchase this lens !
Thanks Jared!
My focusring is wabling a bit. especially when i'm at 70mm. Do i have a bad copy or is this normal?
Yes, your copy is probably bad. If you're at 70mm on your 17-50mm lens, you've turned your zoom ring much to forcefully, and a bit of a "wable" is to be expected. In fact, I'd be pleased as punch to turn my 17-50 into a 17-70 with only a focus ring "wable" as a side effect.
Robert Jacobs LMFAO
I've been wondering what's the big difference in comparison with Canon version. It costs twice as much.. yes it has USM and full-time manual, but is it worth it? IQ and overall? I'm looking for a lens on my 7DMKII for fighting sports and event photography.
after a convincing review of the sigma 17-50 f2.8 i bought it only to find out about it's focusing dillema and Fro Knows Photo never address the problem. that sucks!
N what r they..?
i dont think it fits the Fx sensor but if it does the wild amount of megapixels are really going to make the flaws apparent and if you have the money for the D800 you should just go with the 24-70 2.8
Just bought this lens for my Canon 77D. The lens hood stays put firmly now. It is a great lens.
Dear Jared I own a D7500 with 18-140mm, looking for a wide one with low light capability. Shall I opt for Sigma 17-50 or Tamron 17-50.
Actually a additional battery grip would be a handy addition with this heavier lens if out for a long days shooting.
adorama has the sigma 18 50 for 300 or so. you think spending the extra 300 for the 17 50 is better
I want to buy this lens for shooting a documentary . would it be a good choice ?
+Devin Scott so for family portrait should I get the sigma or the 50mm 1.8g.
Mr Jared.
why don't you have a review of the Nikon 17-55mm f2.8.
I know it's a bit old..
please do one.
Not sure about Tamron quality, but I ended up going with the Sigma 17-70 and having issues with softness (making it unusable at F2.8) front focusing and now a high pitched squealing noise. My 2 cents is to stay clear of Sigma.
How much wider is this lens to the Nikon 18-140mm?
my lens hood lock in fine when "closed". Not sure if fixed or you had a bad copy
edit - and "open"
Been wanting to upgrade from my 18-55mm kit lens. Just placed an order for the Sigma 17-50mm after this review. Will take my chances and hopefully I will get a good copy.
A friend just destroyed my nikon 18-55 kit lens and I don't really want to buy a kit lens again. Is this sigma a good replacement/upgrade?
yup!
Ye they do you can upload the files on image checker websites
right on, I'm loving the K-50 and it stores the data as "tags" on the file, not sure if that's the proper term.... I also can't remember if it stores that info for sure on the JPEG files, but the RAW files have the info for sure, you can right click and choose properties of any file and it shows the info.... seems that with the right lenses I'll even be able to know the focal length of the shot. SOOOOOO much to learn, but over 1700 images shot so far in a few weeks.... stoked!
Hi, I got the lens too. Did you notice the noise in AF like the lens is shaking ?
My hood locks properly. The white arrow must be aligned with the white dot in the lens.
Is it good for d7200 for street photography n for street portraits n also does this lens is suitable shooting in low lights..?
hi Jared Polin do you have a review of this lens and samyang 14mm? I am ready to trade my sigma 10-20mm. Thanks.
Hey Jared... I am curious to know if your sigma 17-50 F2.8 makes any rattling or clicking noise when auto-focusing in Video mode. Mine does have a clicking noise while autofocusing...
@basstheworldbyvideo its very different so really no way for me to know honestly.
hey jared little help..i'm a beginner in photography.. i'm just wondering what is your usually setting for shooting daylight(sunny) and night time(indoor/outdoor) i'm using a canon 550D with sigma 17-50mm.. any advice..??? thanks you!
could you do a review on the Nikon 17-55mm 2.8???
