    When it comes to fast wide angle lenses there are a few options out there. You can stick with the Canon or Nikon versions that run over $1,000 or you can look into the Sigma and Tamron 17-50 2.8s for much less.
    In this case I am reviewing the Sigma 17-50 2.8 OS which runs $669.99 at Allen's Camera. Who is this lens for? This lens is for the new and up and coming photographer with the Canon Rebels or Nikon D3100 D5100 and possibly the D7000. This lens is one of the first two lenses that I see being in a photographers bag. This lens will work hand and hand with a 70-200 giving you full coverage from 17 all the way to 200mm in a 2.8 lens.

    Hi Jared,
    i can explain the fall off at the Edges. The Sigma is not perfectly planar corrected. That means the Focus area is not a plain but an orb. Objects that have the same Distance to the Camera are sharp. A plain surface like the table becomes soft at the Edges because the Distance to the Camera is longer an the area out of focus. This effect becomes weaker at the long end. So at 17mm with shallow depth of field you can get everything into focus by positioning it in a bow.

    Sigma have a tighter click than Canon and Nikon. You need to force the twist otherwise it's not locked properly.

    I just got this lens for my D7100, I've had it for 2 weeks. Its a GREAT lens for "$800" or $400 on ebay; which I did. I've got 7 other lens, 5 nikons 2 sigmas. Most over $700. This is my fav lens!!! Buy this! Great day-out / travel lens.

    Apparently... the lens hood issue has been fixed by December 2018. I just bought (I feel like I stole) it for $285 new this month from B&H. On my D3300... that I seem to not feel the need to upgrade from... the colors and sharpness from the kit lens it replaces are noticed by even non photographers. This is a keeper for sure. I don't think I'll ever "upgrade" to full frame. For a crop sensor lens... it doesn't get much better than this. Very highly recommended for the enthusiast / hobby photographer. If I work with it a little bit, I (as a guy that use to shoot film and dabble in the darkroom) can get some fantastic shots of stuff no one else cares about. I won't get rid of it... even if I upgrade to the D7200 (now OOP) ... that is the plan. Happy shooting!

      Is this lens do fully autofocus on your nikon coz I want to buy it but see some reviews about af. I have d7200 is it fully compatible with this lens.

    • @kennygo8300
      @kennygo8300 5 лет назад +5

      @@souvikbose3392 , yes it will fully autofocus. Be sure to read the instructions before you use it. When you put it on the camera, or before you start it up, make sure the stabilization and autofocus are turned off. Turn them on after you turn the camera on and it works great! Not a big deal once you get used to it.

    No problem with the hood and autofocus issue at all on my copy. The zoom and focus rings work great. I took about 300 shots and i can say 95% of them are excellent. The minor issue is some purple fringing at the edges of the images if shooting at wide aperture (2.8) when reflecting against strong sunlight but it does not appear in low light. Highly recommended for the price and versatility of the lens. It's a quality lens, after all!

    I just called Sigma and spoke to the support guy. I brought up the issue with the hood and their reasoning was that with the 77mm filter size the hood was very large in diameter and was going to be difficult keep on when using black rapid straps because of the lens rubbing against your hip.
    My 2nd issue I brought up was the fact that the front element protrudes far enough forward that a shallow set filter will press against the front element creating a dark spot dead center.

    I bought this lens brand new for $300. It complements my D7100 very well. Its more about versatility. The range and 2.8 aperture should be standard. A 25-75mm range on a crop sensor will get you out of tight spots where crowds are concern. That's the selling point of zooms.

    @2:34 The term "breathe" is for focus breathing which refers to the slight zooming effect you have when you change focus. The right term should be zoom "creeping" where the lens zooms in when it is faced down due to gravity :)

  • @ASVP5
    @ASVP5 13 лет назад

    The lock is made for creeping. Breathing is when the focal length changes when it focuses.

  • @raunakforyou

    the term is "creeping" and not "breathing". .lens creep is when a lens extends/retracts on account of its own weight when pointed up/down. Foucus breathing is the change in focal length when the lens is focussed from MFD to infinity.. .

    Yeah I researched a bit and I'm most likely going with the Sigma. The VC Tamron is way too soft. The non VC Tamron is very sharp, slightly sharper than the Sigma, but the Sigma is plenty sharp and the stabilization really helps with both video and photo. It's only a 100 bucks more.

    Hey Jared, thank you for this excellent review. I have almost zeroed in on the Sigma. However, I wanted to know your opinion regarding Sigma 18-35mm vs Sigma 17-50mm vs 17-70mm. I usually shoot handheld with primary interests being travel photography, landscape, family group photos and occasional portraits. Currently I own a Canon T2i with Canon EF-S 15-85mm + Canon 50mm lenses. I am also considering a telephoto lens, Canon 55-250 or Canon 70-200 f4 IS . Please share your inputs regarding these..
    Looking forward to more of your videos.

  • @Lawful_Rebel

    Great honest review.. However, for the price of this lens and image quality it can produce, it's an easy 10. I appreciate the 24-70 is awesome on an FX camera (pointless and far too big on DX), it's also in another class and completely incomparable to the Sigma..
    Moreover, the Sigma 17-50mm is a fantastic general purpose lens. It's relatively light (perfect for Travel etc) with superb IQ.
    A similar focal length lens from Nikon, the 17-55mm, is alot more expensive, relatively brittle and weighs a ton.. Great lens, but not for Travel [or every day] on a small DX camera.. In fact the Sigma is just compact enough, not to look ridiculous or feel impractical on a D7000.. Actually a additional battery grip would be a handy addition with this heavier lens if out for a long days shooting.

  • @essellar
    @essellar 12 лет назад

    The equivalence thing means that the lens will provide the same field of view, not that the focal length changes. A 50mm lens on a DX sensor (or in DX crop mode on an FX sensor) will provide the same field of view in the finished image as using a 75mm lens on the full FX sensor -- you're essentially taking a crop out of the middle of the image, so you get a narrower field of view.

    I have noticed that people (including Jared) are complaining about their lens hood not fitting tightly on the lens but I don't seem to have that problem. As with every lens hood I use, I always make sure I twist the hood until I feel or hear a firm lock properly. yes the lens hood of this sigma 17-50 doesn't just sit easily on the lens as most other lens hoods I have used do, but like I said, a full twist should lock it firmly following a 'click' sound. From what JAred describes, I think his copy might have issues

    thetechnoexpert: my guess would be yes, I think Jarod said it would be a good lens for cameras such as yours but there may be some picture quality issues such as sharpness near the edges of the picture. Another thing to consider is how big the lens is to the size of your camera body such as the camera feeling cramped when you're holding it. I would watch jarids review again and ask a few more questions about this lens at other camera shops or better yet, people who own this lens.

    I just bought this lens, and wanted to let you know that the lens hood locks in very tight and doesn't move at all, it's TIGHT ! Wonder why, maybe new version or something...
    Great reviews, thumbs up!

    Mostly a great lens, the only issue is some element misaligment and the left part of image in some circumstances is a bit out of focus. Otherwise greatly reccommended, best for amateurs/beginner pros

    I've had this lens since Sept '09. It also had the loose lens hood issue. They now have a design change to correct this hood problem. I sent the lens in to Sigma last month and they have replaced the lens hood and the lens hood adapter. The hood stays properly on the lens now. Two of my friends also have this lens and the lens hood is not an issue.

    Been wanting to upgrade from my 18-55mm kit lens. Just placed an order for the Sigma 17-50mm after this review. Will take my chances and hopefully I will get a good copy.

    This is probably a really NOOB question, but do these DSLR cameras store exposure settings in the "tags" of the digital file? Things like ISO, shutter speed, aperture setting....? I think I'll be getting the K-50 with kit lenses to start, but the $129 f1.8 50mm Pentax lens, as well as this lens, are on my wish list. I'll likely eventually upgrade to a K-3, and add a faster lens in the longer end of the zoom spectrum... I think the 50mm, this lens, and a "faster than kit" lens that goes out to 200-300mm, would be great compliments to the WR Pentax kit lenses. Any input on that would be great! Thanks so much for the videos.... keep shining bro...

      Sorry for the late reply! I have a Canon and you can see the exposure settings if you are viewing your pictures and press the info button a few times. There I can view the exposure settings for each photo.

      right on, I'm loving the K-50 and it stores the data as "tags" on the file, not sure if that's the proper term.... I also can't remember if it stores that info for sure on the JPEG files, but the RAW files have the info for sure, you can right click and choose properties of any file and it shows the info.... seems that with the right lenses I'll even be able to know the focal length of the shot. SOOOOOO much to learn, but over 1700 images shot so far in a few weeks.... stoked!

    i dont think it fits the Fx sensor but if it does the wild amount of megapixels are really going to make the flaws apparent and if you have the money for the D800 you should just go with the 24-70 2.8

    Hi Jared,
    It´s a great lens definitely. I have the sigma 17-50 f2.8 that I use with my good old and reliable canon 550d and I am generally happy with the lens, particularly with its sharpness, contrast and focus but not as much with the colors that I consider to be quite yellowish and not as vivid and saturated when compared with images taken with canon lenses. Do you notice anything similar? Many Thanks!

    Jared what sigma 18-50 did you say you really liked that was priced $399 but is discontinued. Was it the 2.8-4.5 or a fixed aperture version? Thx

    Jared, such a great review. I just heard about this lens and notice it’s available with a great mark down. I have a D7200 and am quickly getting into photography. Obviously this would be great to add to my bag and so much better than the kit lenses. Your video says it’d be great with the D7000 and below. But what about my 7200? Thanks!

      Very late reply, but this review came out in 2011, a few years before the release of the D7200. In 2011 the d7000 would have been in the same position the d7200 (or d7500) is now.

    I'm shooting with it on a 7D, it's got great balance and feels great in your hand. The HSM keeps up with the fastest AI-Servo re-focus speed.

    I have read that and heard that the Tamron built-quality should be quite bad and it takes some very blurry and sometimes straight up bad quality images

    Love your idea about combining it with a 70-200 Sigma. Nikon users could add the 60mm macro for portraits and macro.

    I don't think the slipping on it's own weight is called breathing. Breathing is if the lens zooms in/out a bit when focussing.

    Not sure about Tamron quality, but I ended up going with the Sigma 17-70 and having issues with softness (making it unusable at F2.8) front focusing and now a high pitched squealing noise. My 2 cents is to stay clear of Sigma.

    I just started taking photography lesons in tel aviv israel, i need a bag to carry a laptop, my D7000, some gear, and something warm to ware like a hoody. plus sometimes im on a motorcycle.
