This is my favourite Hunger Games film, and the book is my favourite of the series too. As you touched upon, I think it feels more realistic and less futuristic than the original trilogy, and I thought it ended very poetically, adding another layer to the original books/films
Sejanus was such an interesting character in the book. He actually comes off as kind of overbearing in his convictions and a bit annoying, but that might just be because that's how Snow sees him and Suzanne Collins does a phenomenal job manipulating how you think. Yeah, Sejanus is kinda dumb. In fact, in the book, the Plinth Prize is actually something that was created by Sejanus' dad after he broke into the arena to try and clear the Plinth name and take attention away from Sejanus. It served as an extra motivation for Snow to help Lucy Gray win, and not the initial motivation. Anyway, I think Sejanus is a big reality checkpoint in the book to serve as a reminder that he is district, the type of person we root for in the original trilogy, which is honestly a bit hard to do with Snow's negative internal commentary about the districts. I think he was portrayed pretty well in the movie, but I would have liked to see more of his book scenes.
Sejanus comes across more sympathetic in the book, especially because he’s so likable, but when you list out his actions like that he does sound pretty terrible.
But his actions had good meaning to them he wanted a revolution so that all of these people wouldn't live in poverty and keep dying. I don't feel sympathy for Snow he betrays his friend and girlfriend in a matter of a few weeks.
@@Sproutgoodnight1161Plus we gotta remember that he’s just a sheltered rich teenager who trying to do something good, of course he wouldn’t have the life experience to know that he would need to go about it in a more nuanced way rather than the brash way he does
After I watched The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes they should give this series the TV series reboot treatment as Harry Potter and Twlight to stream on Netflix and for as fans to spend time each season in the Hunger Games battles and follow the different characters both in the Capital and the Districts to go full mature with the violence and killing and that my friends would be a TV series we would actually like.
I thought it was great too, the realism made it feel darker than the originals. The opening to the hunger games was particularly shocking and brutal - none of the high-tech lift tubes/giant dome forcefield , just people being dragged into a small arena and told they would be shot if they tried to escape. Its interesting that the hunger games used to be a fairly minor thing in the capitol too - people didn't really watch it. And it now makes sense why it became such a big thing with Snow as president. Usually prequels tend to not really add much to the original, but this actually felt like valuable insight/backstory.
I haven't read the book in a little while, but I *did* read it, and I think the movie stays very true to the source material- as the other movies did. I love the costumes, how gritty the Hunger Games is (especially since it was before they were considered a whole spectacle), the performances of the actors... the sets threw me off a tad because its not yknow. The 1900s. But it still looked good! I enjoyed it a lot
I saw it and it was pretty good :^ at the end when someone said “snow always lands on top” (I forgot his name) then a guy in my theatre went “HAHA” it made me laugh so hard :’)
I think the movie was really good but as always the book is so much better especially the characters and their dynamics. I think it was A LOT more book accurate than the original movies
I wish this was a two parter. I liked this film but I felt as if quite a few plot points were skimmed over. Basically the movie trimmed down the book to the bare bones of the story. I wanted to see more. Since the movie was so long, and coming off the back of the previous movies cause it’s Hunger Games, I would’ve liked that gamble to have been taken.
I loved the movie, and I've already seen it twice. That said, I do have some issues. SPOILERS They totally eliminated Clemensia Dovecoat after the snake bite. Nothing about her scales, or anything else. In the book, Reaper was a really good guy, even apologizing to the other tributes for having to kill them. They showed this a little when Dill died, but not much else. In the book, the drones generally worked! Having them all malfunction went against the original novel. Peter Dinklage was great, but I can't imagine Crassus Snow being best friends with a dwarf. I did not like Commander Hoff. In the books, he seemed like a decent guy. In the movie, he comes across more like a Nazi. I hate when they make a movie into two parts, but I have no problem if a movie is going to be four hours long. Titanic was almost three and a half. They could've made the movie half an hour longer, and made it better in the process. Coral seemed rather chubby, for a girl from the districts, even if District 4 was favored by the Capitol. They largely ignored most of The Covey. Clerk Carmine had one word, and Barb Azure and Tam Amber didn't have a single line, either of them. Also, they overdid the "pack" thing. It did not reflect the book. And I think there should've been more music and singing! But it was still pretty awesome!
I think Suzanne focuses more on class discrimination in her books than physical discrimination, so I’m assuming being a dwarf isn’t really a problem as long as you’re from the Capital
When reading the books, when I read about Dean Highbottom, one of the first things that came to my mind was the Doctor in the Third Walking Dead Game from telltale. A drug-addict, lanky, passive and hollow - the only thing reviving him is the idea of making Crassus Snows son pay. Peter Dinklage was an interesting idea here, similar to some of the cast in the hunger games movies - they were movie versions; kinda like PJ movies and books and the HP movies and books, where some of the cast works brilliantly and some do fine as their own version. I also thought of Professor Gaul as a version similar to DocOck from Into the Spiderverse. Someone highly intelligent who treats everything as a game, is sadistic and sane while coming off as mad. Viola Davis came off as someone who had a sound mind the entire time, but was actually morally insane. Not completely, but enjoying herself and her power.
The score was forgettable!??? lol James Newton Howard SHINES! ☀️ Not to mention the songwriter from A Star Is Born writing Lucy Grey’s original music love love love ❤
10/10 movie in my opinion I was skeptical at first bc ppl said it wasn’t good but watch it for yourself I love protagonist you’re not supposed to root for
Sejanus HATED that his father made his fortune and moved the family to the Capitol, abandoning their district and his friends there. He has a MUCH bigger role in the book and he is secretly reviled by Snow, as we learn from hearing Snow's thoughts in 3rd person. He befriends Snow, probably bc he sees Snow, the real Snow-struggling, hungry but a bright and enthusiastic teenager. Probably reminded him of good friends he was torn from and forced to live in a new place where the views of District folk were that they were subhuman, necessary evils to produce all goods the Capitol needs, but disposable, dispensable and barely worthy of life. The District ppl were scum-there for whatever the Capitol wanted-be it entertainment from the Hunger Games, sex, secrets, work/slave labor- let's just say: he struggled daily with how to go on living in SUCH a despicable place (in his mind. We know the Capitol child be considered by many to be THE place to live in this new world) Sejanus' mother plays a much bigger role in the book as well. She understands her son and wants to help him. She realizes he's borderline suicidal and she fosters the friendship between Coryio and her son and is always sending him food through Sejanus. She sees Snow as a way to save her son, not only from the game arena but in daily life. Sejanus cared about people. All people. He hated war and he hated his father for profiting from war, but he realized that the Districts needed a rebellion-they had to keep fighting for their independence from the Capitol so he was always scheming to help the rebels. He followed Snow to District 12 so he could help his friend and provide him food sent by Ma. He could have gone anywhere after graduation but he made sure to have Snow's back when he was punished and sent to 12. Plus, he could network with the rebels, but his main objective was to protect Snow. The book points out that Snow still doesn't care for Sejanus like a true friend would-he uses him for the things his ma sends to trade or bribe others so he could sneak to see Lucy Gray perform. You start to see Snow realizing that Sejanus is working with rebels and becoming a liability to hang around with-Snow starts seeing the world through a different lens and reality starts becoming distorted and he starts to distrust everyone, including Lucy Gray. Snow lands on top, so we never quite see whether he lost his damned mind at 19, or was he correct in believing that no one could truly be trusted? Lucy Gray becomes the ghost in the poem that haunts him until his dying moment. Sejanus' character was the voice of reason trying to help Snow navigate his warped world, but his life and objectives in regards to Snow were cut short thanks to Snow's selfish, narcissistic behaviors starting to manifest. Senajus' life was cut short bc Snow only cared about one thing: SNOW LANDS ON TOP. He would betray anyone and twist, manipulate to ensure he lived his father's mantra bc in his mind, Snow was the best and you did whatever you had to to ensure Snow always landed on top.
