    For the record, one thing I think the film's could never capture the visceral writing in books that made me question how in the hell they were published for Scholastic. It makes me wonder what an R-Rated Hunger Games would look like, they might be able to capture the real devastation and desperation of people starving and sick, which to me emphasised just how cruel and deliberate the whole system is, and makes the real-life counterparts that much more sickening.
    One thing that has stuck with me for years was how Katniss described the significance of the landmines in the book, instead of just saying you'd be blown sky high she explains that a District 8 girl who dropped her bracelet literally had to be scraped off the ground. Then there was that cannibal kid, the people who died of starvation or injuries from the mine in her kitchen, the people who went completely insane, the addictions, the trafficking and prostitution for food or for safety in the winning Victors' cases, a whole tonne of stuff, really. Realising that all of those things happened in the real world as a result of political conflict is what radicalised me.

  • @MistarZtv
    @MistarZtv 2 месяца назад +232

    One of the things that I appreciated about the series more as I've gotten older, was how our protagonist Katniss, wasn't such a chosen one savior character who's character choices is the sole reason the dismantling of the dystopian world and that she's just another cog in the machine (a very important one indeed) but a machine that would've start regardless just because of the very nature of people of the contradictions the people in power put in place to hold on to their power, there was a lot going on in the background decades before the events of the story by various people with various factions with their own (and a lot of the time selfish) reasons for fighting the fight.
    And showed just how much suffering and dehumanizing , the cycle of fear and violence can be. without falling into the centralists "every side bad" pitfall that a ton of dystonia YAs and political dramas typically fall into. Its a very scary reflection of our society and the real world suffering that we see (or unwilfully to see) around us. Its especially more true after all the events we're seeing now and the release of BoSAS and how people took all the wrong message from it.

    • @rama2.0
      @rama2.0  2 месяца назад +25

      Yes absolutely. The way I see the series is that anyone with enough courage from the districts could’ve been Katniss. She has never wanted that position to begin with. It truly is scary how fitting Panem is to the current state of the world. Not saying it’s the same but there are definitely a lot of call backs and it’s very unfortunate. As you said, The Ballad also does an amazing job at showing just how much fear can control (young) minds and push them away from compassion as is the case with Snow

    • @OpossumOnTheMoon
      @OpossumOnTheMoon 2 месяца назад +10

      I’ve always hated that the movies made her the first volunteer. In the books people from Twelve have volunteered before, so even that didn’t make her special. She was just a run of the mill tribute who just so happened to be overwhelmingly compassionate, to the point that it inspired a nation.

    • @alhomsiyyah
      @alhomsiyyah Месяц назад +2

      @@OpossumOnTheMoon While you're right that District 12 has had volunteers, Katniss says in the book that it has been "decades" since anyone has volunteered. And this also means that for decades, kids were being reaped while their siblings likely stood by and wouldn't dare to take their place. That's not necessarily blameworthy considering their circumstances, but it does add some level of commendable character to Katniss.

    • @OpossumOnTheMoon
      @OpossumOnTheMoon Месяц назад

      @ I agree, but I think there’s a difference between being the first person to do something in decades and being the first to do something EVER. While the action is rightfully commendable in both circumstances Katsniss being the first ever volunteer just ruins that aspect of the story for me. She’s a average person but an above average sister. She’s the common man who happens to do the right action at the right time. I think it kinda waters her down a bit in ways I can’t fully articulate tbh

    • @alhomsiyyah
      @alhomsiyyah Месяц назад +6

      @@OpossumOnTheMoon I understand your POV. I still think it speaks volumes about who she is, not in a way that makes her extraordinary or superhuman in her affections. It is likely that when the Games first began, the population in the lower districts held onto some kind of hope that a volunteer might have a better chance at beating the odds than, say, an unlucky 12 year old. That hope likely dissipated with time which is why volunteering seems a waste of life by year 74, even for the caring older siblings out there. It's that bleakness that has drawn on for so long which acts as the backdrop of Katniss' actions, which make those around her perceive her as unique.

    3:54 not time stamped perfectly but I 100 percent agree about the Hunger games ability to immerse you into the story and the dynamics without TELLING you the dynamic. You didnt have to read the books to understand whats going on and you dont need a narrator. You get immersed into it, and like you said they brought it to life with parallels to our own society. I also loved the divergence series and i liked the first maze runner. But neither is a good as The Hunger Games.

    One subtle theme in Hunger Games was the power of atrocity. The Hunger Games served to unite the Capitol district and get the citizens of the Capitol invested. This also served to get the citizens of District 1 and 2 and the other career districts invested in Panem unity. Most of the investment in atrocities was through sponsorship of one of the tributes, a vicarious degree of participation is atrocities.
    There is never enough power to force people to give their all--when people do only what they're forced to do, empires fall. "Doing nothing" is the nuclear option of a labor strike. "Doing nothing" undermined East Germany to the point of collapse. Participation in atrocities got Capitol District citizens to willingly and actively support the rulers of Panem.
    "The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes" drove this home to me--vicarious participation in the atrocities of war has a long and successful history. In "1984" the Two Minutes Hate was one of many vicarious participation atrocities that Big Brother used to control Oceania. In the Hunger Games, the fact that other districts were killing off YOUR district's children also served to make enemies of those districts, and it felt good when the other districts' tributes fell.
    Atrocity--just the medicine ordered by the doctor.

    I remember when the movie came out and people were upset that Rue was played by Amandla Stenberg since they expected her to be white. I remember being the same age as Rue and realizing the not so subtle implication that the general public felt like Rue being black made her death “not as sad”. Suzanne really hit on so many issues that plague our society and even when showing the horrors of dehumanizing others people still managed to show exactly what aspects of Panem we accept in our society.

    It reminds you of all these things, but not North Korea? North Korea is divided up into districts, with even simple travel between them being completely restricted. They’re extremely oppressed to the point of it being required for every house to hold a picture of the great leaders. The Capitol and a few other richer districts can provide decent living standards (not including human rights), but they’re the 1%, where everybody else is on the verge of starving.

    As many times as I've read/watched this series, something has just now occured to me while watching this video. The Careers being allowed to train and their districts being afforded treatment the other districts don't recieve is the Capitol's way of ensuring their loyalty as victors. We learn about their special treatment in the first book, but see it come to fruition in Catching Fire. The rebel victors knew they wouldn't bite the hand that feeds them. It can be argued(albeit without textual evidence) that Katniss posed a threat to their existence in more ways than one and they were aware of that, which is why they went for her so hard the moment the gong sounded.

    I've been analyzing and turning over THG for years and I just fully connected that Rue is meant for the viewers to realize what Katniss not volunteering would have meant just as much as she's a symbol of missing Prim/what she's fighting for in Katniss's eyes.

    I watched the first Divergent film ages ago and wasn't all that impressed, and haven't read any of those books. Hunger Games and Maze Runner seem like the strongest dystopian YA fiction currently on the market (so to speak). Good video.

      @rama2.0  2 месяца назад +1

      Thank you so much for watch! I do agree with this. I did enjoy Divergent as merely an entertaining movie but it definitely does not compete with this franchise in my opinion. I think it might have to do with the fact that Divergent was also written on a much shorter time frame than THG (over a winter break if I am not mistaken) so that might've affected things for sure.

    There's one thing I don't hear many people talk about. It's the trauma bond and potential codependency between katniss and peeta. I never really liked peeta as much as other people did. He saved katniss, but his actions also kind of forced her to get closer to him. I would love to believe fondness grew organically for her, but I can't ignore the fact that their relationship is rooted in pain and trauma mixed with isolation. They never had the time that they deserved. By the end, peeta became almost all she had left. Who else will understand her arena and war experiences but him? No one. Gale became too dangerous, and his actions caused the loss of her sister.
    Katniss losses and her ability to survive are relateable to me as a veteran surrounded by danger and the desire to have a sense of normal or something to bond with. A lot of the friendships and relationships I saw were rushed and lacked proper foundation because of the constant looming danger. We often dated each other because we could relate to the shared experiences. That environment can be isolating, too. I don't know. I just wanted more for her in the end. That's also shows how realistic this series is. You feel like the story is real, and katniss could be someone you know.
    Sorry for the rant. It will forever be one of my favorite book series. I loved the films too.

    I think everyone needs to watch The Hunger Games ALONG WITH The Handmaid's Tale. While I absolutely love what THG does, both the later movies and later books glamorize "revolution." It's really only the prologue of the last book that explains hard enough what it all meant. I think The Handmaid's Tale better illustrates the day-to-day of an oppressive government, attempting to topple that government, and the retaliation and lingering impacts that ensue.

    Amazing breakdown! I love when people take the time to make nuanced analysis of this set of stories. It's eerie how Collins manages to draw reference to real world history in her fictonal world with such accuracy with how this form of political power works.
    Let's just hope the lame and lazy "critics" who's deepest thought of this franchise starts and ends at "this is just a Battle Royale rip-off" stays at a minimum. Its the type of people that swear apples and oranges are exactly the same thing because their both fruit.

      I did get some of these critics when I first uploaded this video on my other channel but so far so good lmaoo. I mean I did watch Battle Royale and it is good but I do prefer THG personally

    This is a great analysis of THG series. I agree with you, that it is great at depicting the cruelty of war, the dictatorship and the total impact, that it has on people.
    Well, one thing, on which I disagree with you, is the comparison between THG and TMR, because The Maze Runner tries to depict different aspects of dystopy. It touches the topics of global warming, spread of deseases and trials used for searching for the cure, that are made on children.
    Therefore, at least as I see it, The Maze Runner can't be compared with The Hunger Games as both are approching different topics.

    Career tributes are like today's white collars.They are most likely to be winner and become rich among other working class but it is still one in a million and through very hard and brutal way. Also you have to be very lucky to survive. And most of the time they volunteer to participate (like blue collar workers resist more and go on strikes, unionizes etc. but white collar workers can work overtime voluntarily and unpaid in the hope of American dream.) and careers specially trained for the games. (like white collars' college degrees).
    Also They are more hostile to other working classes and more loyal to the system/capitol because they think they will be rewarded more if they work more. Indeed, they live relatively better than other working classes.
