Honestly I just watched American Graffiti, and it was fascinating as a teen movie in comparison to how modern teen movies are constructed. It was so much more chaotic, and really full of people being cruel and foolish in a way that seemed so real.

this! i hate how the series' public perception has denigrated so heavily, as a result of the other films. to all the boys *deserved* its success, and it *deserves* to receive the same respect as the other goats in its genre, but it's treated as being indistinguishable from the likes of "the kissing booth" and "tall girl" all because of its sequels and status as a netflix film.
i think one of the biggest issues is that the visual aesthetics of the first film is extremely-similar to its sequels; susan johnson's directorial skills are leaps-and-bounds above fimognari's (made especially-evident by the cinematography), however, to an untrained eye, theyre very visually-similar which makes it hard for the audience to really notice the dip in quality between films... definitely only worsened by how the books' narratives worsen over time, too.
i really need all of its detractors to rewatch the first film, without the plot points of the second in mind (especially how they destroyed peter's character). it knows exactly what it wants to be - a charming, laid-back romcom between two normal teenagers - and it excels at it in an extraordinary fashion. most romcom's rely on excess amounts of drama to keep the viewers enticed (hence the genre's propensity for toxicity), but to all the boys manages to escape this through how down-to-earth its characters, dialogue and overall narrative is. even the more-dramatic elements (the fake romance, lara jean's letters leaking, lara jean's crush on josh etc) dissolve very quickly to focus on peter and lara jean's development.
i was really expecting the drama surrounding the letters to be a big feature upon my first viewing of the film, and was pleasantly-surprised by how its handled; instead of being some grand-drama that encompasses the entire film, it's just a small facet that sets that plot in motion. i really loved how lara jean takes a humiliation like that in stride and just deals with the cards she's been dealt. the film's writing is shockingly-mature in how it has its characters handle the situation they landed themselves in - especially so, given that the narratives *immaturity* is one of its charms. it's really sad to see how the public's respect for it has dwindled over time

I also really enjoy the dialogue in this movie!! It’s not perfect but so many teen movies try so hard to “talk like a teen” that it ends up being cringey and loses its authenticity. In To All the Boys, they treat all the characters like real people and most of the cringeyness doesn’t come from trying too hard, it comes from the genuine awkward nature of real life situations, which is why no one is really bothered by it like they would be in other dramas. The character writing is raw and real and it just makes the vibes and execution of this movie so fun! I love watching this movie, definitely a comfort film

I prefer the books because of how much detail you get (and there's more drama), but this movie is so cozy, well made and does capture the essence of lara jean and her coming of age story. Netflix and other movie companies should be taking notes because it is great to have the author be involved and be able to show and explain what the readers liked about the book in the first place.

I already liked To All the Boys, even though I don't really like teen movies anymore, but this really helped to explain why this one feels so different. The use of color and style is especially impressive. ^^

The first movie will always hold a special place for me. Truly love it one of the best original Netflix teen romances that doesn’t make me cringe. The visuals aesthetics and Lana and Noah’s chemistry is so good. I still wonder how much better the other two movies would’ve been if they stuck with the same director

The first movie absolutely captured and built on the magic of the book, I read it as a teenager and it was my favorite book series. I was so excited for the second book as I liked it more than the first, and they cut so many plot points that made it so endearing and charming and it was a bit disappointing but still.

One of my favourite things about the colour palette used in this movie, now that it’s been pointed out, is that when it shows the flashback of Laura Jean and Josh being friends she’s drinking the lemon version of Arizona iced tea which comes in a yellow teal and pink can. Even her drink choice is colour coordinated.

Having read and loved the books, I LOVED the first movie and they really captured the cozy sweet vibe of the book. The ONLY change that bugged me was actually Gen's motive behind hating LJ...in the book, LJ and Peter were the last ones left at the middle school party and they kissed, which wasn't part of a game or anything. LJ knew Gen had a crush on Peter. Gen walked in on them and felt betrayed. That line of thought feels far less silly than the movie's motivation, which has her upset about a kiss during Spin the Bottle. It made Gen a bit more relatable and less just hardcore irrational mean girl. That's just my thoughts, though!

Im a 30 year old woman with a 38 year old boyfriend and weve watched to all the boys trilogy at least three times in total. Its SUCH a heartwarming film for when you're sick or depressed. Its awkward but in a realistic and not too exaggerated way. Youre constantly thinking "that couldve been me in my teens!" And the cast is really good. The colours and the style of everyone is pretty af but not too unrealistic like euphoria e.g.

I cannot tell you how ecstatic I was to hear you say you have a love hate relationship with Peter AND WHAT YOU SAID ABOUT THE SECOND MOVIE, GIRL I WAS IN THE SAME POSITION!!! I didn't watch the third one for a YEAR and some change after it came out, but trust me it's worth it, HE GETS BETTER! the third one is my favorite.
I've read the books and for me I don't completely understand the hype. How Peter is in the second movie he's like in ....basically all the books. Their relationship comes off toxic to me, especially when John comes into play, he just shows a lot of red flags. The MOVIES ABSOLUTELY PULLED THROUGH! (not counting the second one, I don't even acknowledge the second movie all due respect to EVERYONE, it's just not for me.) Genuinely, for the first time the movies are better than the books. (TO ME!)
To call these movies (except the second one) "comfort movies" is an absolute understatement and you nailed every detail as to why they work. I literally remember thinking to myself "oh no here comes the love triangle" during the movie/bench scene and then she said she would never do that to Margot and I went "oh!" Beautiful.

I think the third movie is worth watching, but only because I love LJ and her ability to not be a perfect protagonist, instead being one that grows. Plus it also let's us meet Dae, kitty's love interest for her spinoff show. Who knows, maybe one day Jenny Han will give us a Margo spinoff too. the feeling that i had watching the first movie i wish i could have had for the last 2 movies. it was so good. the cinematography, colour grading & overall aesthetic of the movie was amazing and its what caught my eye while watching. lara jean was so relatable as a character and peter kavinsky had all the girls in a chokehold. when they switched directors, the change in quality was sooo obvious - the only scenes that stood out to me was the last scene in the 2nd movie and the nyc scenes in the 3rd. nothing is beating the first one

As someone who loves the books, the movie gets Lara Jean and Peter right, but everything else is so off. They cut out a lot of characters and scenes that contribute to who Lara Jean is as a person and a lot of her growth. I put off reading the last book for awhile and ended up reading it during a stressful time of Law School applications for me. Her turmoil of applying to college and trying to decide where she wants her life to go and who she wants to set herself up to be was so realistic for me. The movies focused primarily on her love life so it isn't as prominent or impactful as it is in the books
