One of the hosts on The Broad Perspective podcast already said this but good god why couldn't they find Sydney some better bikinis? The costume department doesn't know how to find proper swimsuits for girls with big boobs, why tf is it hiked up so high in the back? As a big-breasted girl myself, I was offended lol
This movie felt like they just found 2 super hot famous people for the lead roles so people would come see it, and thought that would be enough to carry the success of the movie
Yep. The ole "sex sells" over let's just do a good movie has me done with movies that do that. If there's nudity / objectification to get viewers, we don't go anymore. It messes up people's brains and Hollywood knows it...and doesn't care.
I think people were just so thirsty for a new romcom, ANY romcom that their standards were in the basement when they saw this, because I agree, it was not worth the hype
The chemistry between the two characters was so poor which was only made worse due the rumors of Sydney Sweeney and Glenn Powell having an affair during be press tour….where was this chemistry during filming ??
Right??? That’s what initially made me curious about the film because I figured they’d have insane chemistry on screen, which i tend to prefer if the movie isn’t that great anyway. But then I watched it. All that PR and for what???
Turns out she forced him to act that way during the press tour to generate buzz for the movie, her and her fiancé were executive producers on the film. He talked about it on a Hollywood Reporter article.
Another RUclipsr said if they cut out the first 11 minutes of the film it would've improved it. At least that way the audience would be curious on what went on between them
I never heard that before but it's a good idea. And also RED FLAG alert if he talks about you like that to a friend because you hurt his "bro feelings" a little what's gonna happen when a serious misunderstanding happens or something else. Guy was so quick to be so cruel. Made me side eye him.
This was my exact thought watching. The first 11 minutes were paced really poorly. They should have told the story afterwards through flashbacks in my opinion, maybe durjng a confrontation when they both tell their side of the story. then you could have them reconcile due to them realizing that it was a misunderstanding
I think it's really telling that they tried to market it as "based off of Shakespeare," despite the only real connection to Much Ado About Nothing being the names.
The other similarity was the family trying to set them up to shut them up. But the rest of it was pretty different. I felt bad for Darren Barnett, as his character in this movie was completely and utterly useless. In the play, Don Jon is pretty essential to the plot. But in this movie he's just a prop piece.
It didn't even follow the rom com formula. They had already liked each other in the beginning but broke up because of a misunderstanding. Then they drag the movie out until they realize that they misunderstood each other
she barely can act specially for an actress on the big screen now. I think she should have stuck in the euphoria or tv shows, she’s completely an overhyped actress and we all know why; I guess.
I doubt it. People that have Hollywood stars as their partners are already aware of the things that they need to do to have good PR for their movies. Most likely, it was made up. I have distant family and friends right by the actual Hollywood (Burbank/Toluca Lake) and I really got to know the movie industry a lot better just from my short time staying there. They will do ANYTHING for attention. These people will publicise their relationships, share "secrets" or just straight up make up lies out of thin air to get attention. EG: This movie. It is FREE marketing for people to start "rumors" so that their movies and shows will sell. Don't believe everything these people say and do. They are totally normal people in real life (for the most part :/) but when it's time to sell themselves? They'll bend over backwards to continue to afford their Beverly Hill mansions/condos and their private party lifestyle in the the Hollywood Hills. Like, yikes.
It didn’t cost Sydney anything, her fiancé was involved with the production of this movie and he was definitely approving this whole pr drama. It might have affected glen’s relationship a bit
I think she and her ex looked really good together.. the actor is a bit more charismatic and peesonally i think they had more chemistry.. the main couple has sibling energy and no chemistry ...
I didn't like this one either. Its one of those movies that would've made more sense if everyone were 15 - 20 years younger because they all acted so immature!
They threw in quotes from it throughout the movie but that’s it. Makes me think that wasn’t apart of the script originally until after they made the movie lol
I think it's going to be very difficult to reform romcoms and make them as big as they used to be until the writers realize they cannot lean on the amount of gender cliches as they used to, because we are just living in a lot less hetero and gendered world. Hence all the best romcoms/romance movies of the last 10 years or so have been Queer
I genuinely think there are some very basic things that would have made this movie MUCH more enjoyable. 1 - they should have gotten rid of the first 11 minutes. They could have maybe told it through flashbacks, or if not, just had them have an argument where they both reveal what they thought happened that day. This way the audience would have to wonder what happened until the big reveal. 2 - their backstory is dumb. I think they should have been actual exes. Or at least the incident that they're holding such a grudge over literally TWO YEARS after should have been much bigger (it could have still been a misunderstanding, it should have just had bigger stakes imo). Maybe something like Bea got a call from her ex bf and left to take it, Ben overheard the call and thought she was cheating on her bf with him, Ben asked Bea to leave, rudely, says some mean shit etc, but doesnt say why exactly. So then we leave off with Bea thinking Ben is a really rude person and Ben thinking Bea is a cheater. Maybe they could add that Ben had been cheated on in a previous relationship (maybe the one with the other girl from the wedding) to give more context as to why he didn't give Bea a chance to explain. Idk, this is literally after thinking about it for 30 seconds. 3. I truly think they should have leaned into them being bad people. Bea and Ben are both so insanely petty in this it's hard to justify. But the movie doesn't really want us to think they suck as people, even though they objectively do. They literally can't stfu long enough to not ruin their loved ones wedding. But the movie is trying to make it seem like "they're good people but bring out the worst in each other because they have such passionate feelings." I think this is because writers often think people won't care about a love story if they characters aren't perfect. When in fact, they don't have to be perfect, they just have to be perfectly *matched.* my favourite rom com is 10 things I hate about you. In that movie the 4 leads are all extremely flawed individuals. Kat is a menace and at times uneccesarily mean, Patrick is terrifying, Bianca is unempathetic, Cameron is conniving. But they match very well. In anyone but you the characters are at each other's throats in a way what is really quite mean (especially Ben). I think they actually should have leaned into this more. They could have bonded over being mean to each other, begrudgingly having to admit that the other person was funny. Maybe they bond over gossiping about someone else. Maybe they find some other jerk to make fun of (they could have made the ex fiance a really shitty person and had them come together over making his life hell). I don't really know or care, my only point is I don't need to think the characters are good people. 4. I know I mention bea's x in the above points, but I actually fully agree with you that they should have comeptlely written him out. I think they could have just left him as an off screen presence, but if they had to bring him in, I think he should have been a villain
Completely agree. They were being extremely selfish over a very dumb misunderstanding, but no one really calls them out for being selfish or ridiculous. I also think they should have slept together or at least kissed, the fact that that doesn’t even happen makes their grudge towards each other even more absurd to me.
My biggest problem was that they had zero chemistry and lacked any good subplots or character arcs. I mean we hardly know anything about the main characters. The fake dating wasn't even fun, like what was the point? Though nothing can top 27 Dresses when it comes to romcoms for me, peak story telling in that one.
I miss 00s rom-coms. Like I used to love (and still do) putting my feet up with a hot chocolate and sinking into the couch while watching something mind numbingly cute and cosy. Like About Time, or About a Boy, like yes give them to me, but now it's like every film is trying so hard to please everyone that it pleases no one. Darling, I came of age when Totally Spy was on TV and Tatu's "All the things she said" came out, I never stood a chance 🤣. BUT that doesn't mean I can't enjoy a hetrosexual romance, like I don't want to be turned on in every movie or see some insufferable girl boss, I want that sweet sweet dopamine hit after seeing both characters learn to love themselves and then find what they are looking for in each other. Now every character is written as a hot political statement on whatever Hollywood thinks makes people happy, and it has ruined my rom-coms.
Will Gluck also directed two of my favorite romcoms: Easy A (2010) and Friends with Benefits (2011). I guess even he couldn’t save this movie from its own writing.
I wouldn’t really describe Easy A as a rom com. There really wasn’t a ton of romance in it except for Olive and Todd in a couple scenes. Even so *their* characters were much better written and their chemistry was much more believable. What happened, man? :\
I felt like Glen carried the whole movie. He is so charismatic and funny. His line delivery is immaculate, and I've been a fan since scream queens. Sydney sweeneys voice sounded so monotone and lacks comedic timing, this is not her genre but she is really good in dramatic roles like Reality or even drama-comedy like in White Lotus. Also Sydney's bra and clothes don't properly fit her, pissed me off, you cant a proper seamstress/tailor for this movie?
I’m sorry but I vehemently disagree on charismatic and funny for Glen Powell. He did not make me laugh once, and he was bland as hell. And I know a lot of that has to do with the bad writing and storytelling so it’s not completely his fault, but I’d never heard of him before this movie. I’m good on seeing anything else he’s in, thanks. I’ve seen Sydney in a few things and quite enjoyed her. Can’t say I’m itching to check out Glen’s filmography.
The guy is cute. I recognize him from the trailer for the twister remake....is he a country western singer? A random cute guy made famous through tiktok? 😂😂😂
I often send a friend of mine voice notes when I have strong feelings for a movie. If it's an okay watch with just a few things I wanted to point out, I'll finish the movie before sending her the voice note and just outline the few things I thought were worth talking about. If it's really bad, I will pause the movie and send voice notes as I go so I don't lose my mind. This movie.... I was 10 minutes into it and literally had 10 minutes of voice notes. I was basically ranting for just as long as the movie was playing. Had to put my phone away for her sake 😭
I feel like the movie was trying to copy Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone in Crazy Stupid Love and it did not work out. Maybe it would have if it was Ryan and Emma lol
im also not super familiar w much ado but i have watched the whedon adaptation (a direct adaptation of the play in a modern setting) but in it, if i recall, Beatrice's cousin (hero) is snubbed by her fiancee due to rumors and gossip that are false and beatrice and Benedick (the bea and ben) are actually witty ex lovers and they have an actual conflict to dig into between them bc Benedick is part of the dishonoring of hero or convinces his buddy to believe it (i dont remember how) but it gives them a good reason to continue hating each other until they have to work together. also super excited this video was recommended to me! i love your style
Yes, I read that on the Wikipedia, I don't understand why they didn't stick more to the original story or at least keep in the detail of them being ex-lovers
@@LilShopofAli for sure! they kept in all the eavesdropping and none of what made the eavesdropping juicy like,,,did every script editor fall asleep idk
What I liked about this movie and the scene that sticks out to my brain was when she sang his favorite song to distract him from the fear of heights. That right there felt like accurate pay off for something set up earlier (the song on the plane) and it showed she was paying attention to him. If the whole movie had been stuff like that, showing two leads who hate each other but can’t stop noticing things about one another, and they leaned more into the plot of “she doesn’t Want to be a lawyer”, with him taking at least a more sympathetic approach, it would have been at least a better movie. But we don’t even know what she wants to do! She’s aimless in a way that reminds me of the main character in You’ve Got Mail: okay, sure, she got her man, and now what? Who is SHE as a person? Imo if they wanted stakes for her, she should have already been a lawyer who doesn’t Want to be one anymore. Her ex, if they wanted to keep him in so badly, should have been the “safety” guy who says it’d be a bad idea to waste so many years, and Glenn’s character should have been the guy who showed her she Can have a good life if she chases after what she wants instead of what she thinks she should be. A 20yr old from a rich family can easily go to a new college. A 30smth year old woman with a career and bills to pay would have had more to think through.
Yeah her only dilemma is that she dropped out of law school, like okay, why? Why did she do that and what does she want to do instead? Also yes, love your suggestions!
As someone who loooooves romcoms, i couldn't even finish this movie, it was sooooo bad and stupid and felt like a parody of romcom, rather than an actual romcom.
AGREED!!! Two hot ppl in a scene doesnt automatically mean chemistry especially if it comes across as if each character ia jn love with himself. Also, first rule of filmmaking, show dont tell. If she accused him of small dick energy, he shouldve proved her and us (especially us) wrong.
everyone who said anyone but you “saved romcoms” needs to tap into rye lane (2023) cuz that’s my fav romcom to come out in recent years n it’s def better than this movie oops!
I wish they were exes instead and it was a complicated breakup. Would be so much more interesting. Plus it's not really enemies to lovers in my opinion. Its sad cause I actually love the director and its just boring romance. I only loved the old man and thats it.
Always enjoy your videos! I tried to watch this movie on an airplane and had to turn it off about halfway through. Very underwhelming and with characters that were underbaked. They definitely needed to do tweaking. I also agree about the note with Sydney Sweeney not being right for this romcom. Glen Powell has another romcom on Netflix with Lucy Lui and Taye Diggs that hits the satisfying beats that a rom com should.
I love cheesy rom coms even ones people said are dumb or stereotypical. But even then, this movie went under my already very low bar for rom coms. It’s so bland, and every single plot was juvenile. I felt like I wasted my time and nothing of substance really happened. It’s like watching an uncharismatic extrovert telling “fun” story that progressed to fast.
Argh, I hated this movie. I don't understand how people can read the script and say "You know what, this is good, this is exactly how people talk". "You never talk about your mom" he didn't....? He gave basic information, and the dude suggesting he was IN LOVE and then the male lead getting defensive as if he was a 12 year old putted in the spot for his classmates to mock. Girlie spends half of the movie talking about how much of a disaster she is and then gets mad when someone agrees and that's the foundation of their hatred? Lazy lazy Awful scrip, awful writing. Also...this is a movie mainly for women and you make your lead to an actress that looks like she'll steal your boyfriend and has and the dude is a dude that only a gym bro would like...
I feel like Hitman, which Glen Powell stars in, was a better comedy than Anyone but You, but it wasn't as heavily marketed. It had better chemistry, and it was a lot more funny. Also the whole scandal of Glen and Sydney hooking up, was weird like her fiance and herself were producers it was clear it was juat marketing and looking back on it I think they knew the film wasn't great but they needed the money to make a profit which makes sense why they came up with a whole scandal. Tho knowing they were Glen's boss, it gives a power imbalance, and he has said it was all Sydney's idea and it shows. She was very much pushing it in the premier.
I don't mind a cute montage in a romcom AFTER the relationship buildup is already set in motion, like we've actually spent time with the characters and understand why they have chemistry. Like I need at least a few witty conversations before I'm willing to sit through a montage, writers.
I nodded at your points especially the acting and the plot contrivances but i can't muster enough hatred for this movie when every day a new sexist movie packaged as teen romcom gets made. i will give anyone but you some props for being generally unproblematic and a coupld of times funny. they tried
Now I need everyone to watch Hitman and Set It Up (even Twisters and Top Gun: Maverick tbh) bc Glen has explosive chemistry with literally anyone else but Sydney 😭
Probably the most below average, by the numbers rom com I’ve ever seen. It tried so hard to be funny and charming and romantic and it just fell flat. It relied on the plot to carry it through the mud rather than the actual characters.
I LOVE romcoms. I like good romcoms and bad romcoms. During Christmas I even watch all those terrible hallmark and hallmark type romcoms. I’ve tried to watch this movie three times and I can’t get into it. I fell asleep twice and just straight up gave up on it the last time. I’m done with it lol
yk a rom com is bad when they feel the need to put an explicit scene to prove that they have chemistry, to have a spicy scene isn’t bad per say but having to have it explicit is unnecessary 💀
The line “She’s a nothing,” bothers me so much because 1. That’s just awkward writing and 2. It’s obviously a reference to the “source material” but in Shakespeare’s day, “nothing” was slang for women’s genitals and “thing” was slang for men’s. And, for people who know Shakespeare plays kinda well - let alone those who ADAPT them - this is pretty standard knowledge. Just a testament to how misguided this adaption is.
i watched this movie on a flight…it was incredibly awkward during some scenes 😬 it was so cringe, grotesque, and hollow. it honestly felt like i was watching a rom com spoof
I really loved the 90s adaptation with Branagh and Emma Thompson! And having liked modernized versions of classics, like 10 Things I have about you or Clueless, I really thought I might like this one... nope.
i hope the algorithim finally picks up ur amazing videos i love your essays! also wtf with those bikinis? i have no sense of fashion but even i knew those cant of been only choice by costumers
My moms friend took us to watch this in the theatre and as soon as it ended she apologized to all of us saying it was one of the worst movies she's ever seen, and I couldn't agree more. At so many points the movie is so stupid it is deeply frustrating to watch. From what I've seen both leads are good actors but their chemistry is nonexistent. Sydney especially feels miscast. Bea's character feels designed after other rom coms, disillusioned/cynical/witty, ambitious cool girl etc.(more Sandra Bullock in The proposal) While Sydney has had great performances in more dramatic shows/movies the comedy here fell flat and she felt like a black hole of charisma.
After watching this movie, I did not get the hype. I don’t think it was the worst film, but I can’t stand “i am saying the joke. Isn’t that funny” humor that people do to show self-awareness and make fun of certain tropes. It is what annoyed me about the Barbie movie as well. I wasn’t a big fan of the writing and most of the jokes went on for too long and there was a lot of exposition. I can see what it was a relief for people because Sydney Sweeny was right, people want rom Coms and want to have laughs. This particular one just didn’t work for me.
didn't like this movie very much either, butttt actually at the end of the singing unwritten credits, they do reveal the fight on the patio between the two girls on their wedding day was fake to trick them to make up
for me this movie lacked the quality of feeling really attached to the protagonists. it had a lifeless quality, before even going into depth about why.
It wasn't the best out there but got to see scenic australia, 2 hot people hotting and few chuckles - i enjoyed it eventhough it had only netflix quality. I wasn't expecting top tier writing & i am fed up of teen romances 😢
I didn't even see this movie and I laughed the whole time at your dry commentary. This is also the first time I've seen one of your videos, and I immediately subscribed. I loved it
Did anyone else notice that her parents were obviously meant to be played by the parents from Schitt’s Creek? Maybe they asked them and they said no, but I couldn’t stop noticing how they were obviously meant to be similar to Moira and Johnny
It is such a shame this movie seems to have miss the mark so much, it’s based on my all-time favorite Shakespeare play. Glad I ran across this video because if I had heard that this was based on Much Ado before seeing your video, I guarantee you I would’ve watched it somewhere. Now I’ll probably just skip it.
Problem with that movie is that it blatantly lied to us as to who the leads we were supposed to root for You can’t put legends Taye Diggs and Lucy Lu on the poster and edit the trailer with them, only to focus on the other 2 characters with no depth and boring cliched bad jokes
Just want as someone who lives in Sydney, Australia, the distances and geography in this movie well and truly broke my brain. My fav being the insane idea you would ride in an open top car for about an hour and a bit along the highway in summer from palmy to the city hahaha. Or going over the bridge after leaving the airport.
i think one of the reasons why romcoms don't work for me is because they assume i'm just going to root for the painfully heterosexual couple because...........well, they're both straight and hot. what more do you want?? i want them to seem like they actually genuinely enjoy each other as people, for one. why is that too much to ask for
western writers and directors need to look at kdramas and analyze why romance and romcoms work there but not in the west anymore. they need to learn from kdramas
Rom coms and romance absolutely work in the west, tf are you saying? 💀 I agree they need to learn from kdramas, but just because we’ve had a slew of mediocre movies from mediocre writers and directors doesn’t mean that romance movies “don’t work” in the West anymore. that’s so dumb lol
to me american drama rely too much on sex scenes and focus too less on the emotions. K dramas are definitely way better that American movies overall ( a part maybe from a walk to remember...) but it you have good recommandations I am up to it !
The bummer is, they're also both really good actors. Sydney is super cute in Everything Sucks and Set It Up is one of my favorite rom coms. But they had them PLAY to their "hotness" and wrote to it too so it didn't work.
As someone who LOVES Much Ado About Nothing, this being an “adaptation” is sooo sad. Cuz the original Shakespeare is genuinely so funny and I don’t know how they messed it up this bad
Just want to take a moment to say that I feel you on It Chapter 2. I really enjoyed the first one and legit could not get through Chapter 2. The whole time I'm sitting there just thinking "Is this fucking movie going anywhere?".
Same, I haven’t seen it since that night in the theater, but from what I remember, like Anyone But You, the opening was not great and I could feel it in my gut that the movie was going to be bad and it was worse.
This movie was so forgettable I forgot to finish it. & I forgot that I didn't finish it 😐 I didn't see like the last 8 minutes of it & was surprised while watching your play-by-play overview of the film when the ending came up. Not surprised by the story, just surprised I forgot to finish it.
Beatrice and Benedick in Much Ado have SO much charm. They sling barbs incredibly quickly (never going too far, notably) then pull back and stare into each others eyes and run off. There's a whole plot point that they would do anything for each other. Not to mention, there's no past lovers interfering with their relationship. To write an incredibly generic romcom and pretend it was based on Much Ado without including any of the things that make Beatrice and Benedick so romantic (incredible verbal dexterity and a total focus on their relationship without outside components) is so annoying.
One issue with hiring too good looking actors, is they can't sell the part that is obviously not written for them. Form the dialogue that Sydneys character has in the bathroom, it comes across if the idea is, this is someone that is not used to getting hit on, and thus, find the man and the situation intriguing, because she believes that he was hitting on her, and that is something new to her. And sure there are stunningly looking people that aren't self confident. But it is not believable that Sydneys character looking as she does, has never been in a situation that she would have felt someone was hitting on her, even if she had not been self confident. You would also have to make it clear that Ben did not actually hit on her, but that something she said, or something she was wearing, made him ask her out, when she asked, as the thought she was being hit on. And is his mother comes up later, it could have been something, she had said or liked, that is referenced in that situation, but later in the movie comes up as the actual reason he asked her out. For her it was the exciting thing about getting asked out, despite the age difference. And for him, it was giving her a chance, because of something relating to his mother, even though he did not hit on her or had any plan to ask her out. But then, yes there would have to be something during the date telling them both, that perhaps there could be something real there. The issue though, is that you still need them to reconnect. It doesn't matter how good the date was, if he was exciting to her, as the first guy (she thinks) to ask her out, and to him, as her as a potential serious relationship. And that it what should have happened after the bar scene. But ending in them breaking up again. Possibly we would need a third breakup before it would be believable that there was something between them, that they did not (want) to see, that would then blossom during the wedding. Her not knowing about his fear of flying, and listening to a specific song to calm him down, would not necessarily had come up, so that part was fine. Except for is to took his cookie, he would have noticed that it was gone. Unless you show the flight crew collecting trash. But I would have probably also had it be significant, something he was teasing with her, that she really liked that he got free for sitting in first class. Ok so it wasn't her family that bankrolled the wedding. But then you actually have some reason for her family to be bothered with her having a change of heart, and not having a plan to get a job. The only thing I appreciated with the film, was that at least Ben was working out. There are way to many films and TV-series today, where the male lead is really fit, but doesn't do sport, show no interest in working out. At least with unrealistic beauty standards for women, they can often be explained away with good genes, and eating small portions (on average). But when a character, and it is mostly male, but some female characters as well, are extremely fit, in such a way that they have to work out almost daily, and for several hours, it doesn't make sense if the character show no interest in that.
They could tie the whole fboy thing be tied to the Bea coming to his and Pete's apartment and finding a woman's pair of underwear in the living room of something while they're cuddling and he hadn't explained he has a roommate. Pete's latest fling left it there, there's a giant fallout and they both say thing that are hurtful and Bea storms out.
So glad to finally come across some negative feedback for this movie! I'm not a huge fan of romcoms either but I had high hopes for this one because some of my friends loved it and I only heard good things about it. I ended up being so disappointed, lmao. THIS is the movie everyone is hyping up? It was so mediocre and unoriginal, like I truly don't get what people saw in it. There was nothing special about it at all, it wasn't charming, it was just forgettable :/
A good romcom in recent years was Set It Up on Netflix Which Glen Powell also starred in. Good acting all round. Good story beats. Chemistry between the characters. Story arcs and stakes. Reminded me of good rom coms from back in the day.
Set it up is very nice though Zoey's character comes out as forced in several moments. Outside of that there is chemistry, the funny moments are in did funny and you can see why they like each other since they are lovely
One of the hosts on The Broad Perspective podcast already said this but good god why couldn't they find Sydney some better bikinis? The chemistry between the two characters was so poor which was only made worse due the rumors of Sydney Sweeney and Glenn Powell having an affair during be press tour….where was this chemistry during filming ??
It reminds me of that episode of Friends where Joey says if two actors are actually hooking up off stage then they’ll have zero chemistry on stage 😅
Thank you! I really wanted to like it because I liked Sydney Sweeny and Glen Powell but i watched and was like where is the chemistry
Glen Powell had soooo much better chemistry with Daisy Edgar-Jones in Twisters, and she spent the first half of the movie grey rocking him lol

They wish they could be She's the man smdh
@@pixiestxNyomouf Or "10 things I hate about you"
@@pixiestxNyomoufor clueless!
Not to mention the quote at the beginning is from Romeo and Juliet, which is about the furthest thing anybody can think of from a 'romcom'
I am a rom com girly but i stopped watching this movie halfway through because of their lack of chemistry and the cringe plot.
It didn't even follow the rom com formula. They had already liked each other in the beginning but broke up because of a misunderstanding. Then they drag the movie out until they realize that they misunderstood each other
Sydney should stick to dramatic roles. Comedy doesn't seem to be one of her strong suits. She just sounded bored and like she was phoning it in.
she barely can act specially for an actress on the big screen now. I think she should have stuck in the euphoria or tv shows, she’s completely an overhyped actress and we all know why; I guess.
Nah...she should quit her day job.
Her acting in this movie was atrocious 💀 I’ve never watched euphoria but have seen clips from it and she wasn’t that great either.
Her acting in this movie is SO DULL she’s like a robot she should stick to drama not comedy
@@ninjanibba4259 ok, you are going too far now, bro
The characters just seem so boring and lifeless
Gurl when i remember that all of this destroyed Glen Powell's relationship, it almost costed Sydney's marriage with all the drama... And... For this?
I think that’s just made up so that people will watch the movie ngl seems very fake to me
Cost. Not costed :)
They made the decision to do that...they are to blame.
Shallow. That's what I'd describe this movie. All looks, no substance
I had no idea it was based on "Much Ado About Nothing" until waaaaaaay into movie. And I love "Much Ado"! This sh*t has nothing to do with the play.
They threw in quotes from it throughout the movie but that’s it. Makes me think that wasn’t apart of the script originally until after they made the movie lol
""Nothing small about me-"
"WHAT THE FUCK😒"
I died. I may watch the movie just for that guy on the plane. Like girl samee
He was the best part of the movie
Stopp the sim fighting scene 😭😭
Deapool and wolverine is THE rom com enemies to lovers movie of this year. No take backsies
Exactly!
They are also just boring, like we already have movies that do the cliches and it sometimes feels like they are trying to be those.
Rye Lane is the exception
Oooh interesting point
Just curious, what films are you referring to? Could really use some recommendations.
Approved. I'd like your script by next Monday ☺️↕️. Much love!
Yeah and it’s weird that the sex scenes weren’t on the same level as Friends With Benefits even though Anyone But You was supposed to be sexy
I wouldn’t really describe Easy A as a rom com. There really wasn’t a ton of romance in it except for Olive and Todd in a couple scenes. Even so *their* characters were much better written and their chemistry was much more believable. What happened, man? :\
easy a is so good, it was definitely ahead of its time
I felt like Glen carried the whole movie.
That’s really just her voice tbh. Girl has severe vocal fry that she tries to cover up when she’s acting.
@@madlie2452literally her voice is kind of dry sounding alredy
@@phillipgalan660 He looks like a muppet.
Less than two minutes in and already had to subscribe bc of the use of sims to take your anger out on characters you hate 😭😭😭 creative and admirable
Yes! I meant to mention that as well, it felt like they were making fun of rom-com tropes and dialogue
Ohh thanks for the recommendation
Give me my black rom com with quirky black leads
exactlyyyy u get it!!!!
I still can’t believe I spent actual American money on this movie in theaters. So underwhelming 🙃
How to lose a guy in 10 days.. Best rom-com ever.
This was a take on Much Ado About Nothing??? Lawdddddd help us all.
the only reason i know the male lead is because people compared him to a capybara
Your monotone voice and dry humor is what cracked me up, I love this
I agree with this review 100%
Thank you ! Someone who admits they had zero chemistry. Just two hot people, being hot next to each other. Bleh
Bruh me and my dad love watching rom com movies cus their funni, by the end he was questioning if it was a rom com in the first place 💀
I love the usage of the sims footage I find it hysterically hilarious😭😭😭😭
Sidney isn’t acting, she plays herself in every role.
She is hot and white so that's ok.
Been waiting for this comment! My sentiments as well.
Lazy lazy
Awful scrip, awful writing.
I completely agree, I can’t believe people actually fell for that, it was so obviously a marketing ploy.
they knew it wasn’t good cus im pretty sure i heard somewhere they had to set back production cus they went back to film and add more scenes😭
I don't mind a cute montage in a romcom AFTER the relationship buildup is already set in motion, like we've actually spent time with the characters and understand why they have chemistry. Like I need at least a few witty conversations before I'm willing to sit through a montage, writers.
I nodded at your points especially the acting and the plot contrivances but i can't muster enough hatred for this movie when every day a new sexist movie packaged as teen romcom gets made. i will give anyone but you some props for being generally unproblematic and a coupld of times funny. they tried
Yeah, it does deserve some praise for not perpetuating any problematic tropes like most rom-coms of the past
@@LilShopofAli yeah, like "i see what you're doing, now do it better"
A modern take on Much Ado About Nothing?? Groundbreaking. SS gives absolutely nothing in interviews.
Now I need everyone to watch Hitman and Set It Up (even Twisters and Top Gun: Maverick tbh) bc Glen has explosive chemistry with literally anyone else but Sydney 😭
IT: Chapter Two’s that special type of bad that can’t be touched - a perfect comfort film
The only thing that I loved abt this movie was the credit scene 😭
It’s sad because the director HAS potential. The man literally made Easy A
Getting serious Hallmark movie vibes.
Hallmark is better than this
i watched this movie on a flight…it was incredibly awkward during some scenes 😬 it was so cringe, grotesque, and hollow. it honestly felt like i was watching a rom com spoof
Completely agree with you, but i’m actually here to comment about another CXG reference! I would love to see your take about it!!
I definitely want to, I have some ideas but haven’t figured out exactly what I want to talk about
I really loved the 90s adaptation with Branagh and Emma Thompson! And having liked modernized versions of classics, like 10 Things I have about you or Clueless, I really thought I might like this one... nope.
That other romcom with Glenn Powell..."Set it up". That one feels 100% more romcom-ish than this movie does
i hope the algorithim finally picks up ur amazing videos i love your essays! also wtf with those bikinis? i have no sense of fashion but even i knew those cant of been only choice by costumers
I can see what it was a relief for people because Sydney Sweeny was right, people want rom
Coms and want to have laughs.
This particular one just didn’t work for me.
didn't like this movie very much either, butttt actually at the end of the singing unwritten credits, they do reveal the fight on the patio between the two girls on their wedding day was fake to trick them to make up
Oh shit did they? Okay, that makes sense, thanks for correcting me
for me this movie lacked the quality of feeling really attached to the protagonists. it had a lifeless quality, before even going into depth about why.
I didn’t even notice that wow but that makes so much sense
the writing was so bad. I couldn’t stop complaining about the expository text. like.. LEAVE SOME ROOM FOR INTERPRETATION DAMN!!!
"Stop trying to make Glenn Powell happen! It's not going to happen!"
- in my best Regina George impersonation to Hollywood 😅
Set it up is a great modern day romcom though
Problem with that movie is that it blatantly lied to us as to who the leads we were supposed to root for
You can’t put legends Taye Diggs and Lucy Lu on the poster and edit the trailer with them, only to focus on the other 2 characters with no depth and boring cliched bad jokes
Sydney literally sounds like she’s reading from the script. And the Blk best friend was so cringe and he couldn’t act to save his life.
Even as a comic book fan, god, I can't wait for comic book movies to die out.
I can’t begin to explain how much I appreciate the diss on It 2 it is a RAGE movie for me. Like so bad that I go on a full rant whenever possible
Knocking Bea off the boat bc ANOTHER spider crawled up Ben’s shirt would have literally killed me 😂😂
i think one of the reasons why romcoms don't work for me is because they assume i'm just going to root for the painfully heterosexual couple because...........well, they're both straight and hot. what more do you want??
i want them to seem like they actually genuinely enjoy each other as people, for one. why is that too much to ask for
western writers and directors need to look at kdramas and analyze why romance and romcoms work there but not in the west anymore. they need to learn from kdramas
Definitely! Some kdramas have had me hyped for a couple for the whole 8 weeks while the movie lost me almost immediately
I don't think it's that's bad. Natasha Bedingfield saved this movie for me though
Glen Powell is Milquetoast and smiles all the Time, like hes living in a Toothpaste Commercial
Loved your video! But this background music killed me😭
The most recent rom com I remember liking was Isn't It Romantic...that was in 2019 😭
As a huge rom com fan, this was so egregiously bad, I felt personally insulted.
Yes! I love that suggestion, that actually would’ve felt more organic than him just insulting her.
This movie screams your 11 year old sister makes it her whole personality because it’s an “adult movie” and “no one understands it like her”
I’m pretty sure the friend she talk to is Claud which is short for Claudia her sister
A good romcom in recent years was Set It Up on Netflix
Which Glen Powell also starred in. Good acting all round. Good story beats. Chemistry between the characters. Story arcs and stakes.
Reminded me of good rom coms from back in the day.
I’ve seen that one recommended in the comments quite a bit, maybe I’ll check it out
Set it up is very nice though Zoey's character comes out as forced in several moments. Outside of that there is chemistry, the funny moments are in did funny and you can see why they like each other since they are lovely
I couldn't physically finish this movie
