  • Remember that moment in time where dystopian young adult franchises were all the rage and consumed every aspect of pop culture? And now it feels like everybody has forgotten....well today I want to talk about the one that started it all....The Hunger Games... and how this is one of the greatest book to screen adaptations of all time.

I love The Whole series, from the books to the movies.
The first movie is the weakest from the bunch. I was mainly caught off guard by the exclusion of Madge. But the rest of the films managed to rewrite the scenes that involved her in such a convincing way that I got over it.
Catching fire is the best book and best movie in my opinion.
But the thing that absolutely blew me out of the water with the movie adaptation was The hangin tree song.
I always heard it in my head like a lullaby. But the way they adapted it in the movie to sound like a song that slaves would sing in plantations makes so much more sense.
Plus the way they utilized it as a song to band together and march and attack the capitol’s reservoir. That scene still gives me chills. From the song transitioning from Katniss to the people of the district, to then transitioning to the score with a children’s choir singing the tune. Ugh! It’s fantastic. 🤩
I will forever love this series! ✌️

My only gripe from the first book to movie is how they butchered what the hybrid dog/wolves/people/monsters were supposed to look like. I swear in the book they explained that each dog thing was actually a dead contestant resurrected and they had the original persons hair for their fur coats and they all had collars to represent their districts. In the movie they were all just big black dogs that looked copied and pasted. Other than that i liked the movie perfectly fine.

Yikes, I've only seen the moives so I had no idea. That would have made things ten times creepier.

I completely agree. I saw the film first but after finding out that the mutts were based off the actual contestants, I wish they kept this detail to highlight the fear and sympathy of the “victims” that died. Imagine seeing Rue’s face on this dog. From gentle and kind to this aggressive and ruthless predator. Same with Thresh. He saved Katniss in return and now he may be attacking her.
Maybe they wanted to keep their rating because this element is a complete horror movie. It kind of already is, but this element would make it even more so.

Yes 100% this! While it is a pretty decent adaptation, there are definitely missing parts.
My brother only read the books after he watched the movie (because I forced him to haha) and he came back to me incredibly surprised because he thought that Katniss actually loved Peeta at the start.
It can be pretty hard to get across a characters inner dialogue though so I guess I understand why this didn’t come across in the movie(s).

@@gabrielleduplessis7388 I'm honestly fine with them leaving that out cuz they probably wanted to keep the PG -13 rating and that would've been more creepy. But I see what you're saying, it definitely would've added more fright to the situation Katniss and Peeta were in.

Off the top of my head, I don't think there's a mainstream book adaptation that evokes the same feelings as the book as well as the Hunger Games. Not a perfect book nor movie series, but the setting is adapted beautifully, in some aspects the you can feel the atmosphere even more strongly than when reading the book, and that's not something I'd say about many movies, at least live-action ones. This was a very informative video, you brought up pretty good points!

The Hunger Games series is genuinely one of my favorite movie/book series ever. Ive watched the 2hr+ docs on the behind the scenes making of each movie and its seriously so good and so interesting. And rereading the books recently I can really appreciate even more how well the whole cast and crew captured the world, and i get why some things from the books were changed or taken out. I have so much love for this franchise.

Fun Fact & Shocking news: Suzanne Collins admitted that she regretted making Finnick die. At last moment when the last movie was being made.

I recently read all three of the hunger game books (I’ve read the first one a couple of times but I watched the first movie more) and divergent books and personally I prefer the hunger games and I think the movies adapted it very well and added some pretty good scenes, the divergent books are pretty good but the movies were eh I liked the first movie just not my favorite book to movie adaptation

This is a great adaptation of a series because the author used to be a screen writer, she used to work on Nickelodeon shows in the early 90s.

I recently reread the whole trilogy. It was like going back to my teenage years. I remembered how much I loved this series and how it's still so accurate and everything but outdated

The hunger games helped introduce me and get me into the dystopian genre.
It allowed me to see what the world could be if we don’t recheck ourselves and fix the world we live in. It also teaches us that the human race is predictable, ignores their history (not all people but most) and repeats it. The dystopian genre just exaggerates it.
My economics teacher really believed the hunger games could exist in real life considering the genocide that occurs in other countries.
What I also love about this franchise and the genre is the themes and morals they portray. The premises are great but wonderfully executed (depending on the franchise, but Hunger Games did it well.) and allow the characters, morals, and themes to shine. They go together without distracting from each other.
Catching Fire will be my favorite book and film in the series. It did something different (at least in my eyes) by making the supposed to be antagonists work with each other against a common enemy. They made them human instead of being completely brainwashed and vindictive.

I remember I liked the movies but I loved the books. And Jennifer Lawrence was a really good casting choice ☺️👍🏻 She indeed IS Katniss how I imagined her.

Out of all the adaptations I've seen, Hunger Games is probably the "best" out of all of them. The only other two that come to mind when discussing it are the Harry Potter franchise(some more than others[looking at YOU GoF]) and the Lord of the Rings Trilogy. And even both of those cut out whole plot points and characters to an egregious degree(R.I.P S.P.E.W., Winky, and Charlie)

I remember really enjoying the books but finding it a bit laughable that a lot of the things the story is meant to criticize (Propaganda, child endangerment, figureheads, sensationalized violence) are the things that made the movies so successful. Especially in the marketing department.
