@@nickp3173 this guy obviously never done a huge project himself because these "projects" burn you out and then you have to refind your motivation again
The reason they came with a big gap behind the bumper was to prevent quarter panel damage in light collisions. While tight gaps look great ur 1/4 is gonna get damaged real easy.
That door latch mod is a great idea. The door latch and striker is a chronic problem on these cars. I got one of the tight fit fiberglass rear bumpers. I got completely burned out on metal work on my car. I think Ford left that gap big because you can lean on the rear bumper and it will start to fold up. I think they were hoping to try and prevent more damage back there in a hit but in any rear bumper hit it happens anyway just about every time. I had to cut thin end plates and weld on to my rear valance on both ends to tighten up that gap to the quarter panel. You lucked out on your deck lid for it to fit that well. I had to slice into mine on both sides and the line to the fill panel at the base of the rear glass and re-make those lines to get them to gap properly.
On the rear valance usually what people do is put a relief cut on each end and you can adjust the gap to make it fit a lot better like that. Coming along nice btw!
Great work today! It looks like the trunklid has a slight upwards lift a foot in from the left end,and that's what turned the lip in.You and the bros will give it a tweek and it'll set right. Can't wait for paint !
Man you made it a lot better. You are a customizer now. You dont have to chrome it you can just smooth it up with a little bit of filler and paint it. You could get rid of the seam or gap at the bottom like you were talking about at the end it would look real nice then. These cars fixed up bring a lot of money. Like 30 or 40 grand maybe fifty. You could do the body flares. That would be a lot of work though. Like you said you have to figure it out as you go so it is going to take some good amount of time. It just takes time that is all that is why the guy wanted $12,000 to do it. Body flairs are cool but damn thye take a lot of time. You just gotta know it will take longer to finish but it would be worth it if you dont get discouraged or dont have the money. You would have to work on other cars for money along the way.
Great work, I had a 65 Mustang in the past and it never had a good line or gaps but always got complements driving around. Perfect vehicle to push to the next level.
@@mixalis6168 Agreed. It's amazing how ignorant the viewership of the car restoration side of RUclips is. It seems to be populated by kids who know nothing and have no clue what they're doing yet people watch anyway.
Ben, you are so confident now compared to when you started, it's such a pleasure to see you progressing so well. This build is mad. Wish you well for the future.
Great work on both the door latch and bumper! Love seeing how you work the problem and figure out how to make it better. Keep taking your time on this build and it will turn out amazing
Beautiful work. It’s looking really good. Those old bumpers had those big gaps because they were truly bumpers. They didn’t have the hydraulic shocks to absorb movement like today’s cars. Those old bumpers had to resist movement. So that’s why they had those big gaps so the bumpers wouldn’t hit the body panels on the car.
The reason for the big gaps around the bumper is so that if the bumper is hit, it can move some distance before hitting the bodywork. So in a light hit, the bodywork is less likely to be damaged. Back in the old days, bumpers served the purpose that they were designed for. Not like with modern cars where the bumpers are just for show.
bumper will look slick on that once you straighten up the shut lines, nissan door locks are genius, door sounds great cos its a proper old car with good new tech holding it together
That door lock and latch genius. Then using the weatherstripping who would’ve thunk. Bumper looks awesome and I think welding up that Rear valance the to the quarter panel will make it Look amazing. You’re doing great work love the channel.
You should make a mould of it when it’s finished and create fibreglass ones to sell. I think it would be great because it would fit well and wouldn’t need much adjustment. You would sell heaps of them👍🏻 great work mate, it’s coming along awesomely.
Great idea on the door latches, a nice modern touch and reliable too. Very good fab work on the bumper, a lot of work but going to look amazing when you get it all done.
Awesome job on the bumper and door latch, looks amazing! Don't worry about it taking time, do it right like in this episode and we'll be happy to be along for the ride no matter how long it takes.
To go along with your Nissan latch, I would consider using the outside door handle. I would be just a matter of cutting out the handle area from the Nissan door and grafting it into the Mustang door. Just a thought. God bless and stay well.
This is great, I have a 91 toyota pickup I put a lexus 1uzfe in, wanted the steering and suspension to be more updated and ended up using a mustang 2 rack and pinion, hubs, and some custom qa1 suspension to finish it all off. The bumper looks cleaner but the reason for the gaps with the bumper is so that if it gets tapped by another vehicle the bumper would take the damage and no impact the body panels would occur and you can just replace the bumper after a minor accident.
Chip Foose does the tightest fitting Bumpers and Body panels . You are doing great and I enjoy videos . Keep up the Good work . the top of the bumper has a gap like Strahan . Dang Son saucy
For a future build , look into getting a 1972 Ford Ranchero. The big grill on it makes the meanest looking model. You can put a V-6 Supercharged motor in it or a Boss 302 with fam air induction with a 160,000 volt super coil . With a dual point distributor or go with a super hot modern ignition system. But they make a very good Drift car because the rear end is so very light!
Super work on that rear bumper, it’s a very subtle difference in the grand scheme of things but brilliant that you took the time to step it up a level. The latches are also a nice touch. We’ll do e and keep it going man!
