i dont think alot of people here really appreciate this car but to be honest, this has done a phenomenal job in india where it is known as the renault duster. the reason alot of people from other countries dont appreciate this might have to do with their road conditions. in india the roads are horrible. absolutely horrible. and this champ takes in all the bad bits of the roads with no fuss at all. also i think because its done so good in India, the manufacturer has taken indian market seriously because our model lineup has got over 8-10 models! with 3 engine options and 2 transmissions! and in 2016 the company even introduced an amt. in any case, kudos to renault/dacia for making this little beast.
After reading a lot of the comments on this page it's clear people have their favourites and they have their dislikes. The reliability stats on these vehicles come from all over the world so can't all be false. I'm 35, I've been driving 15 years and I've owned all sorts of cars from a battered £75 Capri to a 4yr old Alfa 166 (ironically over 5 years the most reliable car I've ever owned!) So many car marques use cross brand part these days even buying a Nissan or a Toyota doesn't mean your engine isn't French, or it wasn't put together in Poland etc.... Don't hate on people for not wanting to spend a lot on motoring, most cars sit on the driveway for 22-23hrs a day just depreciating. I think for people who just want peace of mind, a nice long warranty and like their cars new, these Dacia cars seem great value.
I've had a 4X2 Duster for over a year now. It is very practical, very comfortable and very easy to drive. The exterior design is simple but the chunky, rugged looks do impress (as does the price tag!). Interior-wise, the UK-spec cars are much better than the 2011-2013 models sold in Europe, but keep an eye out for the new 2014 one, it is has been improved dramatically. I bought mine with the 1.6L 105bhp naturally aspirated petrol engine. If you plan on going on the highway, avoid this engine like the plague. At low speeds it packs a punch and eager to drive, but get it past 100km/h and it feels gutless. Mated with the 5-speed gearbox, it is noisy and very thirsty and I have to keep thrashing the engine to keep in speed. If you're going for one of the current models, go for the 1.5L 110bhp dCi turbocharged diesel or wait for the new model and go for their excellent new 1.2L 125bhp turbocharged petrol engine, both mated to a 6 speed. Aside from the poor engine choice, the car is functional and great. Highly recommend it with the dCi engine.
TheCamshafter last winter I saw Audi stacked on the side of the road in snow and the Duster was passing beside it without a problem. This 4x4 car beats VW Touareg when it comes to off road capabilities especially because of its ground clearance. The interior is cheap but for what it was built it does pretty well. If you would drive a lot in town or on a motorway I think an old Audi is preferable. If you live at country side or you want a car that goes everywhere and I really mean everywhere I will go with Duster and the rest of the money I would use them for travelling :)
***** I used to have an A4 (from new, 2003 model). Possible the most infuriating car I ever owned. It had a constant central locking problem, really poor interior design for oddments. Anything over a light bend and my phone would be flown under the drivers seat. The ride was 'firm' at best. It broke down as soon as it got damp and the turbo blew at 55,000 miles (just as I got rid of it). I really can not recommend Audi for reliability. I would say they are average at best. This is from a C250 owner with 125,000 miles on the clock and no problems! Oh and I have just bought a base model 4x4 Duster for winter. So far, it is amazingly capable. Can't wait for the first snow to take it to the mountains.
TheCamshafter Not according to this Autocar/What Car? report, a Duster will loose £4,000 over 3 years, that is 40% depreciation! Anything else is likely to loose that as soon as you sign your name on the document. www.autocar.co.uk/car-news/new-cars/comparison-best-depreciation-busting-cars?page=1#comment-162830
Kudos for explaining that EuroNCAP rating thing. Countless other press reviews only give you the numbers, and I always felt this car deserves a bit more info on that.
It amazes me how much the auto industry spoils us...I Imagine that if I was offered this car at the beginning of the 90´s, I would be glad, but nowadays I find myself looking at details such as "those wheels are made of steel" and "look at that wimpy thin steering wheel", "damn these hard shiny plastics" and such. But it seems like a good rugged basic car, and yet makes me feel like I am in the 90´s. Good review. I like the fact he doesn´t mock the car.
Awesome review explaining the euroNCAP rating, and also the "full option" model look better whit alloy wheels, and some cosmetic enchancements.Great job Matt, also he is the only one who pronunces Dacia corectly :).
+Abrar Mohammed It's a cracking little car - I took it off-road a few months ago and it was certainly very capable considering how much it costs. Here in the UK it's pretty much the cheapest new proper 4x4.
I also saw a Dacia Logan taxi, in Cluj, witch had 780.000 km on it :)) The guy said he never changed the engine or anything major, except for the clutch, witch is to be expected on a manual gearbox taxi.
Here's some reasons: A monovolume or StationWagon don't have nearly the ground clearance that a SUV has nor do they have suspensions that deal so easily with potholes and bad roads(which Romania is full of). Also,a SUV looks MUCH better than a Monovolume or SW.A lot of people just want a bigger hatchback with more room and big ground clearance and good suspension for bad roads. And for those people a SUV like the Duster is just what they need.
For 5 years and 140000 km-s I didn`t have a single problem with my Dacia. A lot of cab drivers in my country drive Dacia because of the durability, some of them have driven more than 400000 km-s with their cars. It is a reliable car, believe me. This is a real "peoples-car" :)
The Duster is sold in Latin America under the Renault brand, and it is manufactured in Colombia, I watched a video about it, and even though the factory and its processes seem outdated and rudimentary, the car seems to be well built. I dont know about its reliability, but I must say that the only thing keeping me from buying it is that the 4WD version is not available in Automatic (I know driving stick, too, but I like comfort when I drive, specially under traffic jam conditions).
Some people my friend, just want a cheap basic car to get them to and from work. Not many people have so much money as you think. In that respect, the Duster is perfect :)
Dacia is a Romanian company (owned by Renault, but still Romanian). In Romania all roads are full of CRATERS, not pot-holes.... CRATERS. After I leave home, when I get to work my brains are already fried by all the bumps in the road. That's why the suspension is good, because it's built to roll on Romanian roads... :))
+DarthGhitza I'm in Sofia, and the road are equally terrible. I have a 4x4 in 'Duster' trim which is this base model with a radio and boot mat thrown in. It comes with ASR and independent suspension too. The ride is really good on these rough roads and it held its own off road in Bansko last winter, ½m snow and -20. Also copes well with +40. I just wish it had air con.
my dad is driving for 35 years and the same thing... i thought in the beginning that anyone can drive but later i learned that anyone can learn to drive but actual driving is a different thing...
You are listening to "One direction", playing "battlefield" and dreaming about M3. Florin Iluca that would be, Germany, the Netherlands, Spain, Belgium, Poland, And yes countryes with a much harsher environment, so that means it will last through a couple of Russian winters.
Florin Iluca Yeti isn't a bad car, but the Duster is cheaper, more durable, simpler and easier to repair, so yes, let's say in Russia or African countries it will be a better option than Yeti. In Europe, obviously, it is a bit of a farmer's car, but I quite like it for being honest and for the money a great piece of car. Because not the cheap car is dissapointing, but an expensive and BAD car is.
He's reviewing the worst version. The best version is 17000 euros, alloy wheels, gps, enchanced roofrack, a 1.5 l Diesel engine developing around 100bhp
Where do you film these clips? Dont worry i wont come lurk around, i dont even live in uk, just wondering, your usual filming place seems out of town, but then minutes later you seem to drive in (nearby?) city of some sort.
In fairness with air con, in the UK there's really no need for it. It failed on my car a long time ago, and I COULD pay lots of money to have it fixed and then I COULD make sure I run it regularly to ensure it stays working but really with an English summer...it's more pleasant and cheaper to crack a window...
No, Kryptication isn't wrong, the entry level Dusters will depreciate like rocks because they have no equipment at all, but yeah a top of the range model can hold it's value well.
I drive a late 2006 Focus, I did a valuation on it the other day and this morning WhatCar called me and asked me what car I was looking at afterwards. After I said I was interested in the Ford Kuga, he directed me to this car. Why on earth would I ever want to go from my car to a Duster?! Not only that, why would I consider this over a Kuga?
niksarass And they are not almost the same quality, nor do they offer the same spec. I have to tick every option for the Duster and it still has less on it than my current Focus.
Billy Johnson Check honestjohn Sandero review. Dacias are studied for harsh conditions markets (east, russia, Afrika) so they are robust. Your own little experience is not relevant compared with a reliability rating. My grandpa Clio had no problem when my uncle Escort broke distribution. Dacia is way more reliable than ford in reliability ratings.
Put it this way, it's an interesting vehicle but no radio as standard, thats no different to a Land Rover Defender! and that starts at #23,095!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! And has no Airbags!!!
When I want to get to my cabin, I don't need AWD. I just need a car with raised bottom. My current Skoda Octavia has gotten beaten up quite badly because there's no ground clearance.
Higher ground clearance. My dad's '99 Avensis been in places and then through them most modern 4x4 wouldn't go, so with only 2WD can go pretty deep in sh!t. That would be nice feature just to get a bit higher off the ground to protect the car's under and less water in the cabin :) Really like the idea of Duster!
I just uploaded my personal review of the Renault Duster (Dacia Duster) here in Dubai. A different look at it due to the great price it comes here for.
Funny thing is that the 1.5 dCi is better then the second hand 2.0 diesel, while with the 9k new car you get also manufacturer warranty, whereas with the second hand, you get... fingers crossed. Eventually, it is all a matter of tastes though.
+SuperSayanFitness I hear spot rust happens when you wash the car right after you had it scorched by the sun. Because of the sudden temperature difference, the paint gets fractured and it develops tiny spots of rust.
From all romanians, thanks for a fair pronouncing of the brand's name. For all others criticising and generalising: please try reading a little of our history. The fact you were born in USA, UK, France or any other developed country is a matter of luck. You could be in my place, you could be unfairly called 'gypsy' and thrownes stones at. And it is not pleasant. So if you all really are smarter than us, try proving by not being so mean. Please.
if you'll ask me I kinda like it's not included... I always hate the cheapo stereo which comes in entry level cars as "standard" but you know you'll just need to replace it the next day and spend some other good bucks
What's the latest on the rust problem with these cars? Last I saw people were saying that Dacia offered to fix the problem (in the UK at least) but many people were saying that Dacia went quiet when they contacted them about it, and I saw others saying that the "fix" didn't actually solve the problem.
renault duster offers best price when bought new. Interiors are a bit last century all the dials and switches you'll find them in the renault's from the 90'. The petrol engine is good as long as is not revd to much ...and the diesel one has one of the most turbo lags you'll find and it will turn into a smoky if not serviced completely after 25.000 miles
Depends if you want a new car or not i.e. manufacturer warranty, pleasure of driving a untouched car, newer engines that may not be available on older versions e.g. the 1.5 dCi which is definitely better than older 1.9 or 2.0 diesels. Still... if comfort is the main criteria, indeed, an older but better speck-ed car sounds good.
a 4 wheel drive makes plenty of sense for a lot of people... Where I live we have mountains and winter.. And you see many SUVs about.. At that price converted to Cdn dollars, why wouldn't Nissan import some and sell some here... An entry level SUV makes total sense, especially one with a diesel\
it was originally designed for emergent markets with a low afordable price, even for Romania,so lot of options, especially electronics were taken out,to be on low level of money. if they put everything inside the cars, then it nothing but another renault, over 10.000E car.
Now you buy this car full option with 5000-7000 euro. Not to much depreciation in 10 years. You can't say this about other cars from 2011 that you can buy now with 2000 euro from 15000 euro 10 years ago. You cheapest Duster on sale is 3500 Euro. So that is only 60% depreciation in 10 years.
for a car of this size, its good value for those looking for cheap family motoring. being a dacia though, it probably won't be a big seller in some countries.
I dont see what is the problem on matching that 2.0 litre engine with a 4 or 5 gears Automatic Transmission, if this car uses basically the Nissan Xtrail Classic (2006) mechanic. It is available in AT but in 2WD. The car is well equipped and for a market like Latin America under the Renault brand, where city traffic is terrible, they would gain a lot of customers if there were a 4WD with AT. This car is taking the price place that the 1st Gen Tucson left empty after its redesign for 2nd Gen.
Most people that come to antoher country where their name isn't the easiest to pronounce, have no problem in deciding to shorten it. For example, a guy called Mikhail, here would probably shorten it to Mick or Micky - in order to fit in and to be understood easier. BMW isn't pronounced the German way in any other country, they had to shorten it otherwise it would be 'Bayerische Motoren Werke'. Do you see how that just wouldn't work in most languages?
While I think theses look hideous, the idea of having to get your own stereo isn’t a bad idea, some standard systems are crap and you don’t have to wait till you paid the car off before you can tamper.
i dont think alot of people here really appreciate this car but to be honest, this has done a phenomenal job in india where it is known as the renault duster. the reason alot of people from other countries dont appreciate this might have to do with their road conditions. in india the roads are horrible. absolutely horrible. and this champ takes in all the bad bits of the roads with no fuss at all. also i think because its done so good in India, the manufacturer has taken indian market seriously because our model lineup has got over 8-10 models! with 3 engine options and 2 transmissions! and in 2016 the company even introduced an amt.

The roads in Britain are awful and the Duster is popular there too.

You could be in my place, you could be unfairly called 'gypsy' and thrownes stones at. And it is not pleasant. So if you all really are smarter than us, try proving by not being so mean. Please.
The fuel door doesnt lock? Doesn't that mean that anyone can simply take your fuel at night?
if you'll ask me I kinda like it's not included... I always hate the cheapo stereo which comes in entry level cars as "standard" but you know you'll just need to replace it the next day and spend some other good bucks
Came from carbuyer's website :D
Are all sisters 4 wheel drive?
Great car...really lovely ride....top spec model well worth it the extra 3/4 grand
What's the latest on the rust problem with these cars? Last I saw people were saying that Dacia offered to fix the problem (in the UK at least) but many people were saying that Dacia went quiet when they contacted them about it, and I saw others saying that the "fix" didn't actually solve the problem.
what is the difference between dacia and renault?
renault duster offers best price when bought new. Interiors are a bit last century all the dials and switches you'll find them in the renault's from the 90'. The petrol engine is good as long as is not revd to much ...and the diesel one has one of the most turbo lags you'll find and it will turn into a smoky if not serviced completely after 25.000 miles
Well here in India it's got quite a following the k9k diesel engine is just so famous as it's also used in Nissan cars here in India
And Moroccans too, Dacia has a production factory in Tangier (north of Morocc) and it exprots dacia models to europe too
Is this a hatchback, crossover or 4x4 SUV?
Would you please review the all new range rove please I'd love if matt reviews it
Great value for money and if you search youtube it is surprsingly good off road..i mean for real !
I don't know if price/value is best for high end 4x4 version. Alternatives are Suzuki SX4 or Kia
Gotta love the duster.
Another cost saving measure is that they use cow power instead of horse power according to J.C
Carbuyer 2013 car of the year! Clap Clap Clap
I love this car. I feel like I could go everywhere without any concern
He is from carwow
Hi! I think Dacia are a refreshing change. I like the cheap basic cars!
need cars like this in north america
btw, not even their ads say their own name 100% correct :)
no air con but is there still fan inside those air vents to blow us?
I'm sick of people mentioning about Gipsies. The percentage of Gipsies in Romania is 2.46%. In Greece is 3%. Yet again, that says it all.
For what it is, it's rather impressive.
a 4 wheel drive makes plenty of sense for a lot of people... Where I live we have mountains and winter.. And you see many SUVs about.. At that price converted to Cdn dollars, why wouldn't Nissan import some and sell some here... An entry level SUV makes total sense, especially one with a diesel\
but you should have it it's build under the name of nissan terrano
No not sold here.... auto makers only offer a higher priced lineup here
it was originally designed for emergent markets with a low afordable price, even for Romania,so lot of options, especially electronics were taken out,to be on low level of money.
if they put everything inside the cars, then it nothing but another renault, over 10.000E car.
"Vegeta, what does the Scouter say about the base price of a Dacia Duster?"
*IT'S LESS THAN 9,000!!!!!*
Vegeta
guy barton I changed it to Vegeta.
Sorry about that I couldn't help but say something. Im a massive dB fan
I can't believe that. Let's not hope too many people are wasting their money on a top spec average brand like a BMW.
for a car of this size, its good value for those looking for cheap family motoring. being a dacia though, it probably won't be a big seller in some countries.
Absolutely agree with that, remember how basic the original Range Rover was?
Where's here?
I dont see what is the problem on matching that 2.0 litre engine with a 4 or 5 gears Automatic Transmission, if this car uses basically the Nissan Xtrail Classic (2006) mechanic. It is available in AT but in 2WD. The car is well equipped and for a market like Latin America under the Renault brand, where city traffic is terrible, they would gain a lot of customers if there were a 4WD with AT. This car is taking the price place that the 1st Gen Tucson left empty after its redesign for 2nd Gen.
Can I get one in Canada?
you can get a 2003 Range Rover vogue V8 with a sunroof , alloy wheels , sat nav , air conditioning and leather for half the price of this .
Ryan Dever which would break down moments after buying
Ryan Dever and you will spend 20.000 in repairs the first year
george lightheart if well taken care of idiot
Sorry, I couldn't find anything, If you've got a link, please do share. Cheers.
