Fantastic summary/analysis of all the characters, you nailed the music themes and what they mean aswell. The themes to me of the games are Life, Death, Loss, Acceptance, and i think part 3 is gonna be Closure added in.

Aha I mean that was pretty funny. But I’d have to disagree to same extent. Can’t sith…is a very oddball. Hate him or love him or just be confused. However, unlike jar jar binks, or even scrappy, cait sith does bring some actual importance to the story. Not only is humor much more funny, he actually shows..gasp* characterization and advances the story. Spoilers* Cait sith is in large degree kinda responsible for the events that transpire at the end, and his reasons are sound and force us, and the heroes to evaluate their morals. Cait sith is pragmatic and conservative in regards to revolutions. He knows that Shinra being destroyed wouldnt be good completely, he knows people will be hurt, he deludes himself to a degree that his way is the right way. This is incredibly human and is in direct conflict with Barrett’s ideology. If tifa was the first sign that Barrett’s way is not exactly the best solution, then fair sith, acting as a representative of the company, makes that very clear. And it’s because of this conflict that cait at first uses the gang. It’s not until he is with the actual rebels as people that he values them more than his ideals. Ff7 is a story about many things, but it’s also about revolutions, institutional evil, the people who work for that machine, to what degree we are complicit in human suffering, and anarchism,

I do completely understand his significance in the plot and appreciate him as a character ! I love how the game is so varied and able to convey so many different paths for the characters!
Shared your video on Twitter, was definitely a refreshing and interesting take from someone more new to the franchise! To me there are some points that are slightly off but you nailed it in terms of understanding what I think the devs were going for in terms of character relationships because I feel like older players generally have more of a bias based on old pre-conceptions. Glad you're loving it, hope you're enjoying Final Fantasy 10 too (one of my personal favourites.) You mentioned 8 and 16 but i'd definitely get 9 on that list as well, arguably one of the best ones!

The original game was basically 500 jpegs that hid a locked 3d grid. So expanding the game into 3 releases makes sense. As someone who played FFVII in the 90’s, it warms my heart knowing a new generation will love the ffvii world like we did back then. Thank you for sharing.
Oh I understand now why they’re doing a trilogy after seeing so much about the game, at the time knowing nothing I was just drawing conclusions😂 it is fun to see a lot of newcomers, myself included, loving the remakes

@@SociallDrinkerrI got into the FF7 a bit later (2012) or so. I ain't a veteran on it but obviously have gone through all media relevant to understanding the story. I'll say you've pretty much nailed it. It's not really that difficult of a story, but due to let's say certain biases, people tend to skew the story into something that it isn't. Hence why I said it is so refreshing to see an honest take of the story for what it is !

Great video 👍🏼 I really hope the love keeps spreading so REBIRTH becomes a great seller in addition of a critically acclaimed title. The developers deserve it with the crazy amount of dedication and love they put in that game.
It shocked me to hear that the game wasn’t doing as well as they wanted it too especially considering how much love and effort was put into it! There’s some mini documentaries on RUclips of all kinds of different devs giving insight into how the game was made and it’s so fascinating
Watching this video through, the way you talk and use your hands is great. I wish more people did their analysis videos this way. As someone who has consumed everything FFVII for the past few decades, I'm really excited for anything they have to show in part 3, or to see anyone get hyped up about this game. For part 3 I'm curious to see how far they push the death of Claudia Strife, its impact on Cloud, and how it ties into the complex. She was an element that was there but not prevalent in the original. Keep making these great videos!
I’m super interested in how they’ll do Claudia, but one of my biggest interests is how they’ll do Vincent, Hojo, and Sephy’s momma. I think it’s gonna be real cinematic and real gut punching 😢

While Sephiroth is biologically Lucrecia and Hojo's, what if the Jenova cells inside Lucrecia took her pain and feelings and produced a child who was the split image, inside and out, of herself and the man she truly wanted?
I LOVED the scrappy doo comparison 😂😂 Good lord, I love this game Btw I love Cloud + Aerith ship, as they are perfect together, but the most interesting part about it is that it can't happen, it's a loss, Cloud is meant for Tifa, it's kinda poetic and it feels like a summer vacation love story of some sort. I do love the Cloud and Aerith dynamic mainly because of how tragic it is in hindsight. It’s a really melancholy sweet relationship but the way Cloud and Tifa are portrayed really made me feel the love! Thanks for watchin!
Oooh we’re gonna fight about Cait Sith. He’s literally my friend and I’s favorite character. We also found him *ridiculously* useful in combat, so calling him “useless” in that context is crazy to me.
Lol I do enjoy him but didn’t love his sections in the game, felt like it slowed down alot compared to the rest. As far as combat it could just be a skill issue on my part but I almost never chose him unless I had too😅
My best friend and I played through Remake and Rebirth together, and she hated Barrett the same way you did. It took til near the end of the game for her to really come around on him, but once she did he became one of our favorites. Come Rebirth, she had much the same journey but with Yuffie this time.
This is interesting. Your a gamer who really hasn’t played the OG so the story is basically new. That’s what I love to see for this trilogy. Were there any plot moments you KNEW about. Wrote playing the remakes? Play crisis core?
So the only things I really knew about the story going in was Aerith’s fate and that the Remake trilogy is more so FF7 Reborn instead of a true remake (Whispers and stuff) I had zero clue about anything else, so when we lost the trio in Remake, I had no idea that was coming. Along with any of the Zack stuff, didn’t even know he was a character in the game that’s how out of the loop I was. TL;DR: I knew Cloud was good guy, Sephiroth was bad guy, Tifa is hot girl, and what a chocobo looked like. 😂
That’s super fascinating, I suppose music can convey different emotions to different people. Listening again with that in mind, I do see the happiness in the melody but I think just because of her fate, it always brings me a lil solemness
Oh, I remember reading that his intent with Aerith's theme was to write "a kind of sad but beautiful tune". He said that the idea was to convey that "she wasn’t a very happy character". And he added that "she was really innocent and pure, but had a tragic kind of life".
Personally I kinda exclude legacy consoles' old Final Fantasies before PlayStation 1 and FF 7 cuz I did not have those systems in past. I do look fwd to AAA or modernized FF6 remake which is often recommended by older FF fans being 1 of the best. The only I played FF-like old perfect RPG by Squaresoft was Chrono Trigger, which many agree is the best of all time. Definitely u should continue on to 8, 9, X, not necessary X-2, and then 12. For 13 trilogy, 1st may be boring, but 13-2 and 13 Lightning Returns have more complicated stories and pretty good gameplay.

aww, another biased Tifa video, every single Tifa video i have seen refuses to see the "ugly" side of Cloud and Tifa relationship, you mention he is being flirty with Tifa in the remake but don't mention that Cloud is being isolated from avalanche in the beginning is a mirror of their childhood relationship, also 20:30 if i remember someone said that scene is explained in the ultimania as cloud just mimicking barret and cloud is thinking how cool he is, and there is no "love" in that scene.

I love her, but Aerith is just trying to relive/recreated some of the moments she had with Zack with Cloud😕. It is what it is. Anyway, I’ve been a fan for 20 something years, so it’s refreshing that you as a new fan have come to a lot of the same conclusions as myself and many other older players. It’s reassuring to know that I’m not wrapped up in the sauce of nostalgia and old feelings.

OG came out years before CC. There were no such asinine takes on the beautiful yet tragic relationship between Aerith and Cloud back when og first came out, and Nojima outright admits that he copy pasted some of the famous moments between cloud and aerith such as Cloud falling through the roof and Aerith's one date line to Zack-Aerith moments. Any "callback" that exists between Zack-Aerith and Cloud-Aerith is not because Aerith wants to use Cloud as a Zack stand-in but because they were too lazy to come up with new ideas in CC. Suggesting otherwise is insulting to Aerith, frankly.
Yeah, i never thought she was doing that before but like after Rebirth it''s evident that is what the writers intend. My take was always that her initial interest in him was because of Zack and that she finally was able to move on from him after meeting Cloud (regardless of Clouds feelings, for her the step was being able to fall for another man was my take). But then tragedy struck and she dies. Whatever she and Cloud "could" have been would forever remain unknown etc. But yeah, upon replay of Rebirth it is evidently what is true. She confirms in Gongaga that she still loves Zack, the same chapter that Cloud and Tifa almost kiss and then on her date with Cloud she admits that he reminds her of Zack ALOT and well, her entire dream date just showed how she and Cloud just don't vibe as a couple and by the time she confesses her feelings for him she still doesn't know what type of like (as in romantic of just friends) she feels for him..... Yet still knows were the two of them "stand"? How can she know that if she herself doesn't know what she feels for? Only logical solution is that she knows that Clouds heart belongs to Tifa and not her. And then Zack is litterally on the cover of the game next to Cloud and is a playable character..... Like anyone who thinks pt 3 will end with a "Clerith" canon has to be blind :P

Great video but I disagree on a few things. The character of Zack was literally created from original moments from Cloud and Aeirth to create a connection. Though a relationships can be complex, it makes sense that there is no clear cut reason why she may care for Cloud while feeling conflicted with any lingering feelings for Zack. This is similar to Clouds relationship and conflicted feelings with both Aerith and Tifa. Aerith us aware of their relationship just as Tifa questions the possibility of Cloud being more with Aerith. It is a love triangle. Because of this, it is clear Cloud has feelings for both women. And in complex regard, he and Aerith connect. It is foolish to think that Cloud is just like Zack around Aerith alone. It goes all directions if this is true. Itd very likely that Zack may have personified the hero Tifa always wanted. If Cloud is Zack with Aerith, he is Zack with Tifa and the others. His trauma in this game is specifically for not coming to terms with the truth of the Nebelheim incident, the pressure of being Zacks legacy at death, as well as the fake persona he wished to be to impress his childhood crush. Tifa actually never formally addresses Cloud is not himself, just that he has a memory issue or that she is not fully remenbering the events, in her recollection of events he was not there. She later admits they actually did not know each other as well as she thought. How could she? They barely hung out due to other issues during their childhood. Aerith is the only character who directly acknowledges he may not be his true self, showing that both Tifa and Aeriths reflections of his self and past help to make his full character whole. There are many parallels to Clouds relationship with Tifa and Aeriths with Zack, another reason they somehow connect. And while Tifa and Cloud connect with their past only in their childhood selves at the one incident from Nebelheim and Tifas moment in danger, Aerith and Cloud connect with their internal pasts, with feelings of alienation, no true intimate friendships (Tifa had promises with many of the boys in the neighborhood per books), and a feeling of wanting more. Aerith and Zack have only connected to a short time in her teenaged years and while Zack helped introduce her to what the world may have, Cloud actually opened her eyes to it. Its a complex story where both women are amazing in every way. But i feel there is way too much bias in the fandom with Tifa based on the full story and obervsatioms left by the devs, who literally state because of their differences, even without outside forces Tifa and Cloud just may not work out, but maybe things would be better with Aerith. The triangle exists because Cloud truly cares for both women in different ways, unfortunately ones life was cut short. If he only cared for one, the triangle would not exist.
I appreciate how in depth you got on this! It’s definitely more complicated than I gave it credit for and you bring up alot of good points. I’ve personally just become a massive CloTi shipper after playing the game and diving into the fandom. The more in depth I look the deeper the story and characters become for me. I completely understand the variations of interpretations that this game is able to get out of people, signs of great character work and storytelling!

Getting the backstory of Zack breaking out Cloud and him dying was completly optional aswell and Zacks feelings for Aerith were left unknown. Aeriths claim about him being a womanizer was left up for the player to freely think if it was true or not, since his parents still had letters from him describing a girlfriend that his parents assume is Aerith. Aerith was inherently created as a love interest for _Cloud_ in the 90s but she did not end up being the girl he ends up with at the end and wheather Cloud had romantic feelings for her has never been stated, so it was free for the player to assume whatever they wanted. That Aerith was special to him is beyond evident, anyone claiming otherwise is just being stupid. People who preffered Aerith back in the day oviously has a problem with the expanded lore, because it doesn't align with a Cloud and Aerith being the "it" couple. Upon the expansion of the world his role grew and they decided that Zack did not have multiple girlfriends, only one. While his charming womanizing personality is hinted at (he asks Cissnei out for dinnerc, the litteral moment he meets Aerith he starts flirting with her) he doesn't do any of that with any other woman after meeting And like, he's on the cover of the game next to Cloud and his only desire is to see Aerith again and they made Cloud and Tifa the only "couple" in that got any development in Rebirths main quest (ignore side quests and the GS dates and Cloud and Aerith have zero relational development until their dream date were he doesn't reciprocate her confession in either version of the scene). Every other interaction they have in the main quest is either about Cloud and Tifa (Kalm, Nibelheim) or about Aeriths role as a Cetra and her loss of Zack and about saving the world. So all respect to Cleriths who's preffered her back from OG, but pt 3 will probably be a let down for them if they go in thinking it won't end with Aerith reuniting with Zack, whom she verbally confirms she still has feelings for 2/3 into Rebirth.
@@ibeancookie6664 I didn't miss it. Aerith tells Cloud she likes him too. But can't pinpoint what kind of like. Go back, listen to what she is actually saying and take it at face value. Marlene is 4 years old, if Aerith herself can't pinpoint what like she feels, how do you expect a 4 year old to assess what "like" means, lol? Aerith also confirms she still has feelings for Zack as late as Gongaga 2/3 into the game. And we already knows she loves him, she said so in Remake. The same chapter Cloud and Tifa almost kiss aswell. Again if you expect pt 3 to end in a "Clerith" canon, you are 100% going to be disapointed.
Calling it romance is wrong in my opinon, there is only two dates that hit romantic tropes, and to a degree only one real romantic date on Clouds end. The devs call the dates just an expression of Clouds relationship with the person you've got the highest affinity with, while all dates play out differently. They're more like "gifts" for the player. If it was supposed to be optional romance, then there would have been no reason not to include a kiss for all three girls or at minimum Aerith. I think Yuffie sees Cloud as a big brother guy, she treated her "date" with him more like a trial for the real thing (she actually says so flat out). :P
The cool thing about a game this varied is there’s lots of different takes multiple players can get out of it. I have seen the developer quotes when describing the dates and how they won’t really have a ton of effect on the overall story moving forward which is interesting. Just as a big fan of good romance in media; it’s just how I perceived this story!
@@SociallDrinkerr I did not disagree with you i just meant that Cloud and Yuffie aren't actually on a real date, they are just friends hanging out, just like Barret and Cloud aren't on a date if you get him or Red. The only one Cloud is on an actually date with in his own opinion is Tifa, while Aerith is on a date with Cloud..... i don't see him feeling the same way. :P And the developers said the Gondola dates are just an expression of Clouds relationships with his companions, so getting either version does not brake canon for the overall story (which sort gives you the *clue* to who the love interest actually is). I find it interesting that alot of newcommer to FF7 find that they preffer Tifa. Tifa is the only one in the OG that he confirms mutual feelings for (the lifestream sequence is the last plot twist of the game = Tifa finds out that he is in love with her) and the Ultimania states that Cloud and Tifa confirm their mutual feelings for eachother under the Highwind. What was left up to the player to decide is wheather they thought Cloud felt romantic feelings for Aerith or not in the OG, since that was _never_ confirmed or denied in any media. She has only ever been reffered to as Clouds closest friend. And i think Remake games are trying to be less subtle about it, in OG Tifa did not get any real romance story with Cloud until after Aerith had died. While Remake portrays the two women bonding with Cloud relatively equal, Tifa is till the only one who gets a hug and a thight embrace were their lips are close to eachother. And then Rebirth put Tifa and Clouds relationship in the front seat more or less. And like, Zack is on the cover of the game and his only goal is to get to see Aerith, who herself stated that she still loves Zack. They are 100% not going to end pt 3 with a "clerith" canon. It's Cloti and Zerith all the way.
You’re definitely right about the Tifa/Aerith themes. My personal preference is Aerith though for a multitude of reasons. But it’s obvious Cloud is in love with both. So it’s just confirmation bias whoever you choose. I do hope there’s a multiple endings scenario in the finale to give the player what they want but I have faith the devs to do a great job wrapping it up regardless at this point.
I totally get those who prefer Aerith, there’s a ton of good reasons and narrative purpose for that side, I do trust and eagerly wait for the finale, especially with all the Zack stuff goin on !
I hate cait sith, why they have to bring him back after temple sacrifice? It’s the main reason why i hate this rebirth game. And also annoying shitty ass Side quests and mini fucking games that made me really hate the game and wasted my cash.

Btw I love Cloud + Aerith ship, as they are perfect together, but the most interesting part about it is that it can't happen, it's a loss, Cloud is meant for Tifa, it's kinda poetic and it feels like a summer vacation love story of some sort. Totally agree with your take on it.
I do love the Cloud and Aerith dynamic mainly because of how tragic it is in hindsight. It’s a really melancholy sweet relationship but the way Cloud and Tifa are portrayed really made me feel the love! Thanks for watchin!

Oooh we’re gonna fight about Cait Sith. He’s literally my friend and I’s favorite character. We also found him *ridiculously* useful in combat, so calling him “useless” in that context is crazy to me.
Lol I do enjoy him but didn’t love his sections in the game, felt like it slowed down alot compared to the rest. As far as combat it could just be a skill issue on my part but I almost never chose him unless I had too😅
My best friend and I played through Remake and Rebirth together, and she hated Barrett the same way you did. It took til near the end of the game for her to really come around on him, but once she did he became one of our favorites.
Come Rebirth, she had much the same journey but with Yuffie this time.

This is interesting. Your a gamer who really hasn’t played the OG so the story is basically new. That’s what I love to see for this trilogy. Were there any plot moments you KNEW about. Wrote playing the remakes? Play crisis core?
So the only things I really knew about the story going in was Aerith’s fate and that the Remake trilogy is more so FF7 Reborn instead of a true remake (Whispers and stuff) I had zero clue about anything else, so when we lost the trio in Remake, I had no idea that was coming. Along with any of the Zack stuff, didn’t even know he was a character in the game that’s how out of the loop I was.
TL;DR: I knew Cloud was good guy, Sephiroth was bad guy, Tifa is hot girl, and what a chocobo looked like. 😂

Oh, I remember reading that his intent with Aerith's theme was to write "a kind of sad but beautiful tune". He said that the idea was to convey that "she wasn’t a very happy character". And he added that "she was really innocent and pure, but had a tragic kind of life".

Personally I kinda exclude legacy consoles' old Final Fantasies before PlayStation 1 and FF 7 cuz I did not have those systems in past. I do look fwd to AAA or modernized FF6 remake which is often recommended by older FF fans being 1 of the best. The only I played FF-like old perfect RPG by Squaresoft was Chrono Trigger, which many agree is the best of all time. Definitely u should continue on to 8, 9, X, not necessary X-2, and then 12. For 13 trilogy, 1st may be boring, but 13-2 and 13 Lightning Returns have more complicated stories and pretty good gameplay.
I really don’t see myself trying the original FFs apart from 6, and I do wanna try Chrono Trigger at some point! Thank you for the recs! I’ll keep ‘em in mind!

aww, another biased Tifa video, every single Tifa video i have seen refuses to see the "ugly" side of Cloud and Tifa relationship, you mention he is being flirty with Tifa in the remake but don't mention that Cloud is being isolated from avalanche in the beginning is a mirror of their childhood relationship, also 20:30 if i remember someone said that scene is explained in the ultimania as cloud just mimicking barret and cloud is thinking how cool he is, and there is no "love" in that scene.

I love her, but Aerith is just trying to relive/recreated some of the moments she had with Zack with Cloud😕. It is what it is. Anyway, I’ve been a fan for 20 something years, so it’s refreshing that you as a new fan have come to a lot of the same conclusions as myself and many other older players. It’s reassuring to know that I’m not wrapped up in the sauce of nostalgia and old feelings.

The only reason someone would say this is if they played Crisis Core before the og. OG came out years before CC. There were no such asinine takes on the beautiful yet tragic relationship between Aerith and Cloud back when og first came out, and Nojima outright admits that he copy pasted some of the famous moments between cloud and aerith such as Cloud falling through the roof and Aerith's one date line to Zack-Aerith moments. Any "callback" that exists between Zack-Aerith and Cloud-Aerith is not because Aerith wants to use Cloud as a Zack stand-in but because they were too lazy to come up with new ideas in CC. Suggesting otherwise is insulting to Aerith, frankly.
Yeah, i never thought she was doing that before but like after Rebirth it''s evident that is what the writers intend. My take was always that her initial interest in him was because of Zack and that she finally was able to move on from him after meeting Cloud (regardless of Clouds feelings, for her the step was being able to fall for another man was my take). But then tragedy struck and she dies. Whatever she and Cloud "could" have been would forever remain unknown etc.
But yeah, upon replay of Rebirth it is evidently what is true. She confirms in Gongaga that she still loves Zack, the same chapter that Cloud and Tifa almost kiss and then on her date with Cloud she admits that he reminds her of Zack ALOT and well, her entire dream date just showed how she and Cloud just don't vibe as a couple and by the time she confesses her feelings for him she still doesn't know what type of like (as in romantic of just friends) she feels for him..... Yet still knows were the two of them "stand"? How can she know that if she herself doesn't know what she feels for?
Only logical solution is that she knows that Clouds heart belongs to Tifa and not her.
And then Zack is litterally on the cover of the game next to Cloud and is a playable character..... Like anyone who thinks pt 3 will end with a "Clerith" canon has to be blind :P

She forced her way into Cloud life because he reminded her of Zack. Plain and simple.

No one is “insulting Aerith”. If anything, you’re insulting the devs. They’ve had years to write this, and you’re accusing them of being lazy. I think it was written that way purposely. She still has feelings for Zack which she admitted in Gongaga. She never got any closure, she just stopped seeing him one day. It’s okay if she saw someone who reminded her of him and wanted to relive the moments and feelings she once felt with Zack with Cloud. I think she likes Cloud for sure, never said she didn’t. I just think her romantic feelings for Zack are deeper than the feelings she has for Cloud.
Great video but I disagree on a few things. The character of Zack was literally created from original moments from Cloud and Aeirth to create a connection. Though a relationships can be complex, it makes sense that there is no clear cut reason why she may care for Cloud while feeling conflicted with any lingering feelings for Zack. This is similar to Clouds relationship and conflicted feelings with both Aerith and Tifa. Aerith us aware of their relationship just as Tifa questions the possibility of Cloud being more with Aerith. It is a love triangle. Because of this, it is clear Cloud has feelings for both women. And in complex regard, he and Aerith connect.
It is foolish to think that Cloud is just like Zack around Aerith alone. It goes all directions if this is true. Itd very likely that Zack may have personified the hero Tifa always wanted. If Cloud is Zack with Aerith, he is Zack with Tifa and the others. His trauma in this game is specifically for not coming to terms with the truth of the Nebelheim incident, the pressure of being Zacks legacy at death, as well as the fake persona he wished to be to impress his childhood crush.
Tifa actually never formally addresses Cloud is not himself, just that he has a memory issue or that she is not fully remenbering the events, in her recollection of events he was not there. She later admits they actually did not know each other as well as she thought. How could she? They barely hung out due to other issues during their childhood. Aerith is the only character who directly acknowledges he may not be his true self, showing that both Tifa and Aeriths reflections of his self and past help to make his full character whole.
There are many parallels to Clouds relationship with Tifa and Aeriths with Zack, another reason they somehow connect. And while Tifa and Cloud connect with their past only in their childhood selves at the one incident from Nebelheim and Tifas moment in danger, Aerith and Cloud connect with their internal pasts, with feelings of alienation, no true intimate friendships (Tifa had promises with many of the boys in the neighborhood per books), and a feeling of wanting more. Aerith and Zack have only connected to a short time in her teenaged years and while Zack helped introduce her to what the world may have, Cloud actually opened her eyes to it.
Its a complex story where both women are amazing in every way. But i feel there is way too much bias in the fandom with Tifa based on the full story and obervsatioms left by the devs, who literally state because of their differences, even without outside forces Tifa and Cloud just may not work out, but maybe things would be better with Aerith. The triangle exists because Cloud truly cares for both women in different ways, unfortunately ones life was cut short. If he only cared for one, the triangle would not exist.
I appreciate how in depth you got on this! It’s definitely more complicated than I gave it credit for and you bring up alot of good points. I’ve personally just become a massive CloTi shipper after playing the game and diving into the fandom. The more in depth I look the deeper the story and characters become for me. I completely understand the variations of interpretations that this game is able to get out of people, signs of great character work and storytelling!
@@SociallDrinkerr The problem stems from the fact that in the original game, Zack was just a background character akin to Dyne for Barret. Getting the backstory of Zack breaking out Cloud and him dying was completly optional aswell and Zacks feelings for Aerith were left unknown. Aeriths claim about him being a womanizer was left up for the player to freely think if it was true or not, since his parents still had letters from him describing a girlfriend that his parents assume is Aerith.
Aerith was inherently created as a love interest for _Cloud_ in the 90s but she did not end up being the girl he ends up with at the end and wheather Cloud had romantic feelings for her has never been stated, so it was free for the player to assume whatever they wanted. That Aerith was special to him is beyond evident, anyone claiming otherwise is just being stupid.
People who preffered Aerith back in the day oviously has a problem with the expanded lore, because it doesn't align with a Cloud and Aerith being the "it" couple.
Upon the expansion of the world his role grew and they decided that Zack did not have multiple girlfriends, only one. While his charming womanizing personality is hinted at (he asks Cissnei out for dinnerc, the litteral moment he meets Aerith he starts flirting with her) he doesn't do any of that with any other woman after meeting
And like, he's on the cover of the game next to Cloud and his only desire is to see Aerith again and they made Cloud and Tifa the only "couple" in that got any development in Rebirths main quest (ignore side quests and the GS dates and Cloud and Aerith have zero relational development until their dream date were he doesn't reciprocate her confession in either version of the scene). Every other interaction they have in the main quest is either about Cloud and Tifa (Kalm, Nibelheim) or about Aeriths role as a Cetra and her loss of Zack and about saving the world.
So all respect to Cleriths who's preffered her back from OG, but pt 3 will probably be a let down for them if they go in thinking it won't end with Aerith reuniting with Zack, whom she verbally confirms she still has feelings for 2/3 into Rebirth.

Like, Barret is literally just one rung below the leads.
Calling it romance is wrong in my opinon, there is only two dates that hit romantic tropes, and to a degree only one real romantic date on Clouds end.
The devs call the dates just an expression of Clouds relationship with the person you've got the highest affinity with, while all dates play out differently. They're more like "gifts" for the player. If it was supposed to be optional romance, then there would have been no reason not to include a kiss for all three girls or at minimum Aerith.
I think Yuffie sees Cloud as a big brother guy, she treated her "date" with him more like a trial for the real thing (she actually says so flat out). :P
The cool thing about a game this varied is there’s lots of different takes multiple players can get out of it. I have seen the developer quotes when describing the dates and how they won’t really have a ton of effect on the overall story moving forward which is interesting. Just as a big fan of good romance in media; it’s just how I perceived this story!

The only one Cloud is on an actually date with in his own opinion is Tifa, while Aerith is on a date with Cloud..... i don't see him feeling the same way. :P
And the developers said the Gondola dates are just an expression of Clouds relationships with his companions, so getting either version does not brake canon for the overall story (which sort gives you the *clue* to who the love interest actually is).
I find it interesting that alot of newcommer to FF7 find that they preffer Tifa. Tifa is the only one in the OG that he confirms mutual feelings for (the lifestream sequence is the last plot twist of the game = Tifa finds out that he is in love with her) and the Ultimania states that Cloud and Tifa confirm their mutual feelings for eachother under the Highwind. What was left up to the player to decide is wheather they thought Cloud felt romantic feelings for Aerith or not in the OG, since that was _never_ confirmed or denied in any media. She has only ever been reffered to as Clouds closest friend.
And i think Remake games are trying to be less subtle about it, in OG Tifa did not get any real romance story with Cloud until after Aerith had died. While Remake portrays the two women bonding with Cloud relatively equal, Tifa is till the only one who gets a hug and a thight embrace were their lips are close to eachother. And then Rebirth put Tifa and Clouds relationship in the front seat more or less.
And like, Zack is on the cover of the game and his only goal is to get to see Aerith, who herself stated that she still loves Zack. They are 100% not going to end pt 3 with a "clerith" canon. It's Cloti and Zerith all the way.
You’re definitely right about the Tifa/Aerith themes. My personal preference is Aerith though for a multitude of reasons. But it’s obvious Cloud is in love with both. So it’s just confirmation bias whoever you choose. I do hope there’s a multiple endings scenario in the finale to give the player what they want but I have faith the devs to do a great job wrapping it up regardless at this point.
I totally get those who prefer Aerith, there’s a ton of good reasons and narrative purpose for that side, I do trust and eagerly wait for the finale, especially with all the Zack stuff goin on !
I hate cait sith, why they have to bring him back after temple sacrifice? It’s the main reason why i hate this rebirth game. And also annoying shitty ass Side quests and mini fucking games that made me really hate the game and wasted my cash.
