The car not staring was a blooper. The script originally had them driving away. But the show got a junky car; and when it wouldn’t start; they realized it was a better ending. If you watch closely, you can see the cast in the car laughing.
Yes, and also Michael Richards, the only one to not break character when the car didn't start, ad libbed getting out of the car and looking off into the distance only to get back in and try and start it again. Richards was mad about never breaking character. Same scene when he drops/shoves the air conditioner box into the trunk of the car he really slammed his face directly into it and ad libbed another line "I think I really hurt myself Elaine" (She broke character there too)
@madmardagan2059 You left out that Michael REALLY Cut his Lip on The Air conditioner from the trunk, because they offered to have a box of Styrofoam for him ,but he insisted on having an actual Air Conditioner in the box, because he wanted to work with the weight and he said bumps are good, regarding the physical comedy.
Yes!!! This is a perfect example of the essence of this show. Also, there’s an actual air conditioner in that box and the car not starting at the end wasn’t scripted; it actually didn’t start and you can see some of them starting to laugh in the car.
They also gutted the sound stage including the audience's bleachers and added mirrors to add to the illusion of a larger space along with set dressing.
Michael Richards is such a method actor, when they gave him an empty box to carry, he demanded it actually have an AC unit inside to make it believable. At the end when he goes to put it in the boot/trunk and it slips and smashes against the lip of the boot, it was accidental, but perfect for Kramer's character, along with the car not starting, a brilliant accident.
Not only was Seinfeld created by a whole team of geniuses but they had the comedy gods on their side as well. The car was supposed to start at the end of the episode.
I love watching these kinds of episodes of Seinfeld and being thankful that the simple problems we used to have were all solved by the all-powerful smartphone. Of course now we have a whole new set of problems to deal with 😂
Folks, I have a terrible confession to make... I've lost my car in a similar fashion back in the day. Except I wasn't parked in a garage - my car was dark green & parked under an amber-colored light so my green car appeared JET BLACK. I didn't recognize my own car & walked around the parking lot for 30 min. When I finally decided to look @ the LICENSE PLATES, I found my car & had to call mall security to cancel the reports of a car theft. I was super embarrassed. 🤣🤣🤣
As someone that lived in NYC during Seinfeld my Wife and I were always wondering how people from other states got the situations and the jokes that were such a NYC experiences of living in the city and dealing with all those real-life situations that are so "New York" My then Girlfriend took me for lunch to the Soup Nazi before it was on Seinfeld, she said you have to see this guy and experience his craziness, and it was just like in the show which aired much later
I love self contained episodes like this and The Restaurant. It’s one reason why one of my favorite comedy films is Clerks. A self contained movie about a day in the life of a convenience store clerk.
Fun fact...in a Seinfeld reunion, they mentioned they were dying of laughter in the car at the end bec the car not starting was not part of the storyline. If u look close enough, u can see them laughing when the car doesn't start.
Fun fact about the titles of the show: I believe it was Jerry who said they purposely didn't want the names of episodes to be too complex or complicated so the writers wouldn't have to waste time on "clever" ones like other shows did. Also, if no one has mentioned it already, Kramer insisted to carry a real air conditioner so it could be authentic for the show. And he actually did bust his lip when puts it in the trunk at the end.
Michael Richards actually bloodied his mouth when he was putting the A/C in the trunk. He had them put an actually A/C in the box so it would look more real. Also, when the car wouldn't start that wasn't in the script. But it turned out so funny and even better then what was in the script. You can see Julia and Jason in the back cracking up when it wouldnt start.
I'm getting hooked on your Seinfeld reactions. What's great about this show is that around this time, the episodes get better and better. It's gonna be fun to watch em. Thanks for taking the time to edit all these.!
It took a few years for the show to really explode...but Jerry says it was the episode called "The Marine Biologist" that propelled it to #1...and that was an absolutely BRILLIANTLY written episode. I can't wait until you get to that one...from top to bottom is one of the greatest episodes of comedy TV of all time.
I watch about an episode per day, every day, since about 1998. Some days far more, but the last few years is about one episode on average. I just love this series. Great reaction guys, thanks for sharing.
The dispute over the parking spot, reverse park or go in forwards. When they damage Jerry's SAAB. The car dealership with Puddy. Kramer test driving a car. George and the GTO. George buying John Voight's car. The old bloke working on George's car. The list goes on.
@@mso4433 I just checked, and the first widely sold camera phone came to market in 1999, the year after Seinfeld finished, however the the first camera with cellular service was on the market in 1994. My first camera phone was a Sony/Eriksson in 2002. Camera phones and texting were a bigger thing in other countries first, and I suppose it really wasn't until the iPhone in 2007 that they went mainstream in the US. To not have a good camera in a phone seems so fundamental to life these days, that it is now very difficult to imagine life before phones were cameras and computers in the pocket, like in that Seinfeld era.
One day I had to make a delivery to a large city Hospital (no not that kind of delivery!). This particular Hospital had two large multi-level parking garages which I was not initially aware of. One for visitors to the Emergency dept, the other for visitors to the Internal Medicine and related departments. When I parked my car I made a note that it was located in stall "B-9". But when I finished my delivery I went to B-9 to find that my car not there. I spent 20 minutes looking for it and also called Security on their intercom. One guard was kind enough to escort me around to help me find my car. He then suggested that I might have parked in the "other" parking lot which has an identical color coded numbering system. So I eventually found my car soon after learning of their identical twin parking garages.
The genius of this show is that they can take any small mundane topic and turn it into a massive drama. You catch yourself asking (wait,...why are they making a big deal out of this) They do it all the time....
Julia Louise Dreyfuss won Emmys for her performances in Seinfeld, The New Adventures of Old Christine and Veep. That's an amazing feat and the other 2 shows are very enjoyable as well.
Kramer REALLY hurt himself when he put the box in the trunk. Also, the car not starting at the end of the episode was not planned. It was supposed to show them driving off at the end. Sometimes things are just meant to be. Fate wrote the ending to this one. 🙂
Hey fellow Texans. I really relate to this episode, I remember being 18 and a bunch of us drove down to a San Antonio mall and when we went to leave. We could not find or remember where we parked in the garage. Felt like walking around forever before finding it.
The end scene where Kramer is putting the a/c unit in the trunk, Michael Richards (Kramer) actually slipped and smashed his face into the trunk lid. It's the only take, and they used it in the episode. You can see him reach for his lip, which was bleeding. But he kept going, and didn't break character. --- And of course, the car not starting was real, and if you look closely, you can see them all laughing while Kramer tries to start the car.
Yeah, this is my clearest memory of this episode. It's all a set they just re-configured, moved around and drove different cars into between scenes. It's fascinating how it all looks so great.
We have the same in England. The worst thing about spending all day looking for your car and needing to pee is the realisation that the reason you can't find your car and need to pee soooo much is because you went there drunk and took the bus in the first place!😂
If you get the Seinfeld CD sets… It explains that Kramer, when putting the box in the trump actually hit his face on the box. That was real. And it hurt him. And like others have said the car not starting was a blooper. Oh, and shout out to the set builders. The parking garage was built on the soundstage. Using mirrors to make it look bigger. And changing the colors of the signs to indicate different levels.
I googled Jerry's fake medical condition and found something interesting, funny and concerning. In 2017, a Seinfeld fan sought to prove Urology & Nephrology Open Access Journal, among other online medical journals, publishes fake news. He created a report with a case study on Jerry's condition. They said he'd have to pay a $799 fee for his report to be published, and that it had been sent off for peer review. Despite the fact he didn't pay, a few days later his report went live (and is still available now).

It’s so embarrassing.
Towards the end of the episode where Kramer drops the box in the trunk of the car, and accidentally hitting his face with the box was a blooper that they left in there. You ca n see Elaine having to turn her face away from Kramer to hide her laughing.
I used to clean parking garages and I would still get turned around and temporarily lost. Even though it was the same parcel of land with several parking garages, no two were the same!
