Just purchased and made first cut....Unbelievable results, great mower for $600 at Lowes, donating my old Husky with the new blade for improving my mowing Karma!
just got myself a honda after my first season of home ownership was an absolute nightmare. I purchased the 25" dual blade greenworks mower from Home Depot for around $650 - $700, the thing did not work. I spent more time underneath it cleaning it out whether I was mulching or bagging than I did mowing my lawn. After that experience and basically throwing 700 in the trash can, I decided to go for the HRX217HYA, coming in the mail next week. Going to feel like christmas morning when I can actually mow my lawn without constantly stalling out for no reason. Learn from me people don't get electric - IT IS NOT WORTH IT!!!!!!
The issue with it getting clogged with the grass sounds a bit like maybe you're cutting it too infrequently and/or that the grass was wet when you mowed? In any case, I rather prefer gas too, even though they're noisy.
@@AskDaveTaylor I think it's the material the deck is made out of honestly, my honda with the versatech deck doesn't catch grass the same way. Doesn't really matter whether i'm cutting half an inch or 1+ inches with the greenworks, thing just can't handle thick grass.
to add - I cut 2+ inches with my honda bagged last week and it and it handled it like a champ. only reason the machine kicked was when the bag was full. Thing has WAY more power.
I bought a Honda mower 4 years ago and it's still going strong . Admittedly , the only maintenance I've done on it is change the oil after every growing season ends . I mow an acre and a half every summer . Still only takes 2 or 3 pulls to start . Honda mowers are pricey ( I paid almost $400 ) but well worth the investment
At this point, I would definitely have recorded and assembled this review differently, with more closeups of things like what you say, Warren. Fortunately, there are some great photos on the Honda site too.
Just bought a Honda HRR2110VYA (has Blade Stop). Looking forward to try it out in April. Can't wait! Thanks for an excellent review (even if it's for another Honda mower)!
They make the best mowers. I have the cheaper entry level model and it was purchased in 2010. I have just sharpened the blades, changed oil, and the air filter. The thing always starts with one pull and great. I like the simplicity of mine better no option to run the blades and the motor separately but I don’t care.
These are good mowers I would regard them as semi pro, I use these as well as a Honda HRH 4 wheel pro mower, that is a beast of a mower but the HRX does hold up well, the best thing about the HRX is that it's light and fast and the Honda blade brake system is excellent. Good vid thanks 🙂👍
trippincircuitz when I had my toro the person had moved and left the house vacant the yard was all weeds like waist high and my toro would not go through it I had to use my weed eater and my toro still stalled out sometimes my new Honda has gone through it like a hot knife through butter
I didn't find it particularly difficult, but then again, I was taming a jungle with the mower in the first place. Certainly once the lawn was a more rational height, pulling it backward was fine as part of my mowing pattern.
Great review man. Thanks for the info. After much research and your recommendation I'll be headed out this weekend to be ready for the spring...That is if it ever stops snowing in Pennsylvania.
Mine was a year 2015 so it has not been that long ago. The honda mower was not the only mower I was using but it was the first one to break down kinda sucked at the time because it was the newest mower out of all of them. I was not even mowing tall grass because the grass gets mowed every week.
Depends how far forward you have it set. It does want to keep moving forward, but you can always pull it backwards in that situation. It's just not so easy :-)
Don't know the HRR216 but what makes you think you need an upgrade? I will say that the HRX217 is still going strong and makes mowing a breeze! Definitely no more jungles in my yard. 🙂
I bought my self a differnt honda , the only thing i have done on it is to basic maintence and i have changed the starterpully once in almoast 20 years I do take realy good care of my mashine becourse when i clean it up after work , the upside i shining and so is the underside of it.
Well, if you have it in gear rolling forward, it's definitely hard to drag backwards. We tend to have it just barely in forward gear so it's pretty easy but there's a bit of practice getting used to the optimal forward gear setting.
Dave, nice lawn. How the heck did Honda send you a free mower to make a video of with a yard full of broccoli and turnip greens? Is that a chef salad or a Greek salad?
Yup. Once I get into the groove with mowing, I do it every week or two and it's fine. But that first mow, well, sometimes I wait too long. Fortunately the Honda was more than up to the challenge!
Pave that area over. You are not doing that crank shaft any good. It’s not a monster or a beast, it’s a mower with a 5.1 HP engine. Residential use. The Honda GX engine is a beast not the GCV engine that you have.
I had the same mower the goods it mowed well mulched really good banged ok. Now for the bad i one year time I replaced the carburetor 2 times after the second carb the wheels fell off. As much as I liked the honda mower it only lasted one year. So the honda is just not worth the money. I was glad I kept my snapper mower which is 18 years old and still works fine. Not sure what all the hype is about honda mowers. You would think they would last a lot longer than a year really?
John Bailey must have been before ohc, they really really stepped up their game when they made the ohc, mine is from 2003 and there isn't anything that slows it down
If you use the bag and capture all of those weeds and their seeds you might actually grow some grass back there. And the mower has a life time warranty on the deck only, not the complete mower. BUT It is certainly a good mower. I bough my current Honda mower in 1986, yes it has begun its 33rd mowing season. An HR194
Dude put down some week killer and get some nice grass established. This mower deserves some nice grass. It will leave a nice stand of grass manicured like a plush carpet.
The yard should be mowed weekly not like yours once a year. Mowing the yard when ever someone feel like oh the city has cited us well thats just not the way to take care of your property. And what’s really under that tall grass a brick a pipe you never know.
"Fortunately Honda sent me an HRX217..." So Honda sent you one of their top-of-the-line mowers for free to review? How, may I ask, did that happen? Did they contact you or did you reach out to them? If you reached out, who did you contact? I would totally review one if it meant I got it for free.
Worked with their PR team, mentioned I had a crazy jungle of a yard. We decided it would be a great place to test out a Honda mower, and so we arranged for it to show up!
It amazes me how many people never think saftey @ home. Even in my new job too. My boss use to let people mow all the time in shorts... i put a stop to that. Doesn't take long for a blade to launch a rock or stick into your legs or feet, even with a bag.
At this point, it's my kids who do the mowing, Corey, and yes, they leave the valve on. I would say that storing it through the winter turning the valve off will be important, but on a daily or weekly basis, that's probably more about safety than anything else.
The second they build an AWD one? Its mine. I still sadly still care about what they look like, and the Husquvarna mowers look the best to me. But hands down... I should of bought the HONDA.
Because beautiful yards often come from messy and snarled yards that need care and some good equipment to help transform them. If I already had a gorgeous yard and beautifully cut grass, how would I be able to test out a new mower? :-)
Pig Slayer or weld a little mini hitch on the back of it with a metal pipe going to a little stand with wheels on it. Then you just stand on that little platform and let the mower pull you around. No more needing to learn how to walk.
No matter what mower; that over grown weed patch that high is hard on any air cooled engine; plain and simple. should have used a gas string trimer. Might cut it but didn't do that lawn mower's engine any good.
I make money mowing lawns and i have a Honda its not the same as yours but its 160cc with dual blade and easy start, it starts first pull every time and its very fuel efficient!
Bunch of haters on these comments! I'm looking for a pushmower, I have a arce of uneven property and currently using a riding mower! The riding mower is too maintenance for my taste. I looked at the "never change the oil" craftsman and husqvarna too.

Oddly, it had plenty of guts for the entire season, and kept my grass way nicer and more tame than it was for this first mow of the season. My hopes were indeed fulfilled. :-)
Lifetime on the composite deck only. The belt on mine slipped off after using it 5 times and the Honda dealer tried to charge me $75 because its a "Wear and tear item and not covered under the warranty". I told them a belt doesn't wear out after 5 uses and they let it go. I don't deal with honda anymore. The belt is pretty easy to put back on. U tube it. I use mine semi commercially. High wheeled it through rough grass and light hardwoods thigh high plenty of times. Grass thick enough to stall it etc. Maintain it and it will serve you well.
Well, there's your surprise then: The mower's in excellent condition and works like a champ AND my back yard is way less out of control subsequent to this video. Y'all don't get it, but it was precisely because it was so wild that I needed a powerful and reliable mower like the Honda HRX 217!
My God your neighbors must hate you. I think I saw a whole family of deer living in all that grass. Please mow your lawn more often. For the kids, For the kids.
How do you figure that? I still have a lawn and I still needed to mow it. And I showed you just what that was like in the video. How would me have purchasing it changed that?
I didn't skip mentioning your perceived negatives because Honda sent me the mower, I skipped mentioning what you think are negatives because I didn't see any, as I say in my review. Or is your logic simply that because I don't mention what you don't like about the mower, my review is bogus? Hmmmm....
Surely there is an American made mower that is as good. Self propelled adds weight and complexity as well as the blade clutch. Four strokes sound boring, especially Hondas. I don't like them grabbing too much of the mower market. They are over hyped and don't deserve so much market share. Aren't you patriotic anymore, turning so readily to imported? Mowing contractors don't bother with self propel, so why would a domestic user?

That'd be great fun, actually, tho if I posted an updated photo you wouldn't recognize my neatly trimmed lawn :-)
