The accent (dialect) is amazing. I hear Scots, Irish, and similarities to southern U.S. and hightider. One can see, through accent and dialect, the origins of early North American colonists. Being of Ulster-Scots descent, with ancestors who came to N. America in the late 1600s, this sort of thing speaks to me.

I just love that man at 1:10. What a personality.
I use either word, depending on who I'm speaking with. I am living in and a resident of New Zealand now, so if I were to say "Newfie" to someone here, they wouldn't understand.

As Allan Doyle (Great Big Sea) once remarked regarding 'mainlanders saying "Yis b'y!" after St. John's Ice Caps goals because the locals did, "It's what's in your heart when you say it."
I'm pretty sure Bourdain's heart was in the right place.

I normally try to stay out of these things because it just adds drama, but "Goofy newfie" is the derogatory term. They don't mean your "goofy" they usually mean your stupid. Also another term in Canada for goofy is pedophile (jail slang). I work with a person who was in jail and he told me what it means. I was born in Ontario, but my mother and father were born in newfoundland, they moved to Ontario to give my sister and I a better life. My neighbor called my dad a goofy newfie so my dad flipped out and knocked the neighbor out. I've been made fun of in Ontario schools growing up for being a newfie, even the teachers hated me, but I'm still proud of my family heritage. I have over 70 cousins in newfoundland (because Irish newfie family's are normally huge) next year im going to move with my family down home. I can't wait for it. I'm not offended by the term newfie unless they add "goofy" "stupid" or any other rude word in the same sentence.

I had no idea of how much importance the word newfie means to some people. I honestly use it as a way of saying newfoundlander but just shorter tbh. I love newfies, they are probably my favourite Canadians because of their personalities. It is so much different from what you experience in Ontario. I have also personally never used the word goofy as in a way to call someone stupid so if I have ever said goofy newfie in my life, I probs meant it in a way that meant that newfies are actually goofy. Meaning, like, fun. It sucks to hear that you were made fun of in your childhood but YOUR PROVINCE IS GREAT!!

Most of the people who use the 'Newfie' word have no idea where and how it originated. Believe me it wasn't nice when they did it.
A word rooted in American anger
It originated during the Second World War, when the U.S. was constructing a naval base at Argentia, on the southwest coast of the island's Avalon Peninsula.
Newfoundlanders had been hired to help build the base, and a large percentage of the workforce quit, Baker says.
"One of the lieutenants, in complaining about the supposed lack of work ethic among the Newfoundlanders, compared them to African Americans using the n-word, and then used Newfie as that derogatory term, basically suggesting they're both lazy and useless.

Still cringe hearing that term. I work with multi racial crew. Mainland white Canadian started this with me, went up face to face, said " cocky go over to Giles , A big colored dude and call him the " N " word. I feel the same with that term you call me. " Everyone was floored. All hands got on great after that for seasons.

Some people will be offended by just about any word in the dictionary. You are born a Newfoundlander in Newfoundland so that makes you a NEWFIE. If you're not proud of where you come from move to a foreign country like up there in Canada. Than you would be a canuck , oh and I guess that would offend you to.
This comment is from a NEWFIE.

Newfie is just a short form of Newfoundlander. Mainlanders do not use the term as a derogative term, nor did they start the name, they only know this term from Newfoundlanders themselves. There are "some" mainlanders who look down their nose at people from the island because of the motley crue that came from the island that developed a reputation of drunkness and E.I. abusers. This has given anyone on the island a bad name (in the eyes of the narrow minded) whether you call yourself a "newfie" or "newfoundlander". How many newfoundlanders make fun of others, fat, immigrants, etc? All of them do. I AM NEWFIE 😀
