@@OneDerscoreOneder u dummy dumb head... my high school xc team goes in the weight room twice a week after our hard track workouts and the point is not to get tired...Strength does matter a lot because for the people running high mileage you need to maintain the muscle you have and not just wear it down. Weight lifting can also prevent injury because it strengthens your joints... you dummy dumb head
It's not strength training, it's really a general muscle endurance workout done preseason for general conditioning. It's not effective for either strength or aerobic assurance, those need to be trained entirely separately. The thing is if you keep this girl from being injured she has unlimited potential.
@@fbi805 Her run workouts are certainly working for her. The efficiency and efficacy of this strength workouts is questionable at best. If this workout is supposed to develop functional strength for speed or general athleticism, there are much better ways to do it than what she and her team are doing. As a whole, the selection and sequence of exercises here is a joke for an elite athlete like KT.
whiffkid my point is that these strength workouts could be much better than what they are. They are hardly achieving the purpose they are meant to achieve.
My team does it twice a week and you shouldn't do a circuit because that is supposed to target your aerobic system but xc already does enough for your aerobic system... the goal is just to build strength
@@brandonyong678 We do 3 sets of 8 reps for Split leg squats, overhead press, push-ups, pull-ups, and kettlebell swings on Tuesdays. On Thursdays we do bench-press, goblet squats, single leg RDL, Single arm snatch, and bent over row. For all these sets we use weights that make us sore the next day but not super sore. (in addition to weights we also do a set of box jumps and medicine balls. For the box jumps we do 3 sets of 6 for jumping with both feet, single leg forward and single leg to the side. For the medicine ball we do 3 sets of 10 reps, Chest pass to the wall, overhead to the base of the wall, side throw on both sides, and overhead to the ground) For all this stuff tho, this is just what my team does so do some research, google around and find what you want to do. The weight lifting in general however only is important if you are running mileage of upwards of a minimum 30 miles a week
just to let ya"ll know Grace Ping is another long distance runner with some serious years ahead of her and both of these girls will be running in the World Championships and the Olympics
@@olyviakiley1580 not sure where you got that Grace got burntout considering that she competed with the US National team in Denmark earlier this year. Not to mention that she has been nursing an injury. Would like to see how well you can compete with an injury... the fact that she still holds the record for her age group says a lot as well.
@@fbi805 first of all, anyone who hasn't loved under a rock for the past two years can notice that her engines been lagging. Second of all, just because she competed internationally doesn't mean she ISN'T burning out, it just means she still is at an elite level, just not as much as before. On the same note, it's been a long long while since then, things change. Third, you wonder how I'd do on an injury? If do bad, just like she is, and an injury doesn't equate burning out, it's simply a fuel to the fire that's slowly burning her down. If she IS injured, she shouldn't run. It seems as though you treat her as a hero for running on an injury, but it doesn't, it just means she's making dumb decisions to continue running. Last, just because she holds the record that she set prior to burning out, doesn't mean she won't later, which she is.
@@olyviakiley1580 her competition in Denmark was in August with the Us National team. Maybe you should actually do some research before opening your mouth and calling someone a burnout especially a high school student that has been an inspiration to girl athletes since she was in 6 grade... it seems to me you have a lot of shit against Grace Ping. You don't know her form a hole in the ground and yet you automatically assume that she has burned out. That's pretty funny on the burnout thing considering that most of the races she did over the last 2 years she either ended up in 1st place or second place, if that is what you call burned out makes me wonder what you call someone who is really burned out... With that said Kaitlyn herself isn't at the top of her game either as she ended up canceling the remainder of her track season plus she is also comming back from a knee injury and is still prepping to compete at the US Nationals for a chance to go to the 2020 Olympics... by the way I know from experience what both of these girls are go iij ng through with their training and injuries. I ran 4 years of track for my high school and I played football for 6 years, 4 of those in high school. I know the determination athletes have to compete even with an injury. Something that I am pretty sure you don't have.
I was wondering why they had the girls run around and do all those exercises like that. No sooner did they start they had to stop and do something else. But now I understand it was a well-rounded way to build up resistance to injury. I must keep that in mind when I workout. Thanks for the ideas. :)
All these armchair coaches commenting! Kid is a natural no doubt. But.. It is easy to train wrong. It is easier to leave out the 'things' that seem irrelevant. You are better served by working the whole body, no matter the sport. Also, the 'mind' is just as relevant..but this kid seems to be pretty focused..which is a large part of her success! Not sure how this came up on my recommend, but nice to see some kids that have focus and a positive attitude. Kudos to the whole team, and the Coach. Just remember the Team, K.T.
I agree with you, everyone is saying that these exercises are pointless for becoming faster, has no one heard of strength training for runners? It’s crucial if you want to be great! Also, she is definitely dedicated and focused; she’s valedictorian of her class and goes to a large HS. She wakes up at 4:00 am to go to the gym before school and goes to sleep at 8:00 pm. A master of athletics, academics, and time management; that’s dedication!
Y’all I’m a 8th grader rn and my 5k pr is in the 22’s, I really REALLY want improvement over the next 4 years and I’m wondering if y’all have any advice (diet, certain workouts, mileage, everything)

My gosh looking at their weight room I feel really grateful to have such a nice weight room at my high school. I’m sorry but who doesn’t put windows in a weight room??
don't think this shit will hurt, but I'm thinking someone like Katlyn Thouy, not to mention anyone who just wants to train efficiently, should have a more running oriented protocol - if they're lifting to run better. Check out Knees Over Toes and think: nordics, ATG split squats, reverse step ups, and hip flexors. Maybe a little bit of deep dips and rows.
Asa sports fan, I never would've thought I would follow girl's X country. When I stumbled onto this girls records, I had to check her out. Wow, incredible. I think she'll by stranding on an Olympic podium in 2024.
This is not strength training. This is conditioning with weights. Strength training would have much more rest and greater weight. Doing conditioning in the weight room is not a good use of that time.

My background is with strength athletes, like doing NFL combine prep, but I have worked with endurance athletes at elite levels as well. Her running is enough conditioning for running. If she wants to be stronger while she's doing it, she needs to do actual strength training, not circuits. What she is doing is not strength training.

It’s good for these girls to do some training besides just running, but someone needs to Instruct them in swinging the kettle bell properly.Otherwise, they risk hurting their back and not getting the benefits that derive from doing a proper swing.
That looks like the camera man making a choice to only film close ups of her. I did not see any special attention as far as only working with her in the exercises. It was purposeful, hence the title.
45 years ago the coaches just let the best natural runners do what ever they wanted. I had to run 2x as much to be as good as them during the summer. Come fall xc coach only said run 3 miles. Much better these days with a little science behind the training

1:30 Are they still using those kettle Balls?? My God, they are just terrible for your back. See how the weight hyper extends your lower back when passing through the legs? A terrible idea. That’s a good workout. I’m a tennis pro and I’m gonna steal that circuit and make my kids do it!
Brian’s a great coach!
I make running videos too!
Why the gap?
If only they had a strength coach running their lifting so they could actually get benefits from it instead of just “making them feel tired”....
You’re not wrong, but if we’re being honest strength doesn’t matter in running
YoMyKnee wtf are you talking about? 🤦♂️ if you haven’t played your sport pro or at least Division I NCAA, don’t comment back.
OneDerscore One strength doesn’t matter in running when you suck... yes. Otherwise it’s incredibly important.
OneDerscore One it does matter... a lot actually.
@@OneDerscoreOneder u dummy dumb head... my high school xc team goes in the weight room twice a week after our hard track workouts and the point is not to get tired...Strength does matter a lot because for the people running high mileage you need to maintain the muscle you have and not just wear it down. Weight lifting can also prevent injury because it strengthens your joints... you dummy dumb head
great circuit workout
Seems to me that there should be more hamstring/glute/calves emphasis in those exercises, but what do I know.
Great HS program...wonder if NC State has strength training as part of their program?
they have
is NR a girls school or their program is really big to where they don’t have to workout with the boys?
In Minnesota most teams are separate and big enough
I used to go to NR. It’s a large school and both the girls and boys xc teams were big enough that we practiced separately and had different coaches
@@trygsolberg this isn't in Minnesota.
I wish I could train with kaetlyn 😂 so one day I could run as fast as her
Mile repeats done right before weights? How many and what pace? How much rest before weights?
im glad to see realistic strength training for young women...its sorely missing in fitness its mostly based around dudes and their workouts
It's not strength training, it's really a general muscle endurance workout done preseason for general conditioning. It's not effective for either strength or aerobic assurance, those need to be trained entirely separately. The thing is if you keep this girl from being injured she has unlimited potential.
She was at the meet I was at today
Zachary martinez ayyyy ny xc represent

Tube video change your upar class exercise.
Do you think the other girls worked out the camera team wasn't there for them?
They should get a PT or actual weightlifting coach for strength training. This workout was almost useless.
it's working for her so what was useless for you is not for her.
@@fbi805 Her run workouts are certainly working for her. The efficiency and efficacy of this strength workouts is questionable at best. If this workout is supposed to develop functional strength for speed or general athleticism, there are much better ways to do it than what she and her team are doing. As a whole, the selection and sequence of exercises here is a joke for an elite athlete like KT.
mbdl you have to realize this is probably an addon to the run workout.
whiffkid my point is that these strength workouts could be much better than what they are. They are hardly achieving the purpose they are meant to achieve.
mbdl that’s what I was thinking, 5-10 seconds of a workout is a joke
I am thoroughly jealous that we never had this type of workout routine when I was running in highschool.
Go back now
Do it now. It's never too late.
Question- do I have to do this every day including the days I run to get a better 5k?
brandon sometimes you’ll need a break from this so you don’t burn out but yeah after a race is fine
Probably like once a week
My team does it twice a week and you shouldn't do a circuit because that is supposed to target your aerobic system but xc already does enough for your aerobic system... the goal is just to build strength
@@dill-pickle7130 Thanks. Any suggestions/examples for strength training besides circuit training?
What type of Nike shoes is she wearing

@@5scoresbig thank you ❤️
just to let ya"ll know Grace Ping is another long distance runner with some serious years ahead of her and both of these girls will be running in the World Championships and the Olympics
Grace ping burnt out really bad. Even her sister is better than her, and she's also not as good as they used to be
@@olyviakiley1580 not sure where you got that Grace got burntout considering that she competed with the US National team in Denmark earlier this year.
I cant seem to find any record breaking run videos for Olivia. Can someone send the link please?
It doesn't have to make sense. It just has to produce winners. That is the reward for all this work, and will always be accountable for it. FV
I was wondering why they had the girls run around and do all those exercises like that. No sooner did they start they had to stop and do something else. But now I understand it was a well-rounded way to build up resistance to injury. I must keep that in mind when I workout. Thanks for the ideas. :)
This is some serious training. Damn. 👊🏾👊🏾👊🏾
good stuff.....stronger...faster...working hard allows to play even harder.
very nice. loved it.
May I suggest their coach checks out Mark Rippetoe on RUclips and his Podcast? Exceptionally informative and based on good data. Well done Katelyn.
Y’all I’m a 8th grader rn and my 5k pr is in the 22’s, I really REALLY want improvement over the next 4 years and I’m wondering if y’all have any advice (diet, certain workouts, mileage, everything)
Хорошо отлажено !
Katelyn Tuohy is nothing less then Dynamite - Amazing, to say the least!
Every bodies looking for what makes her that successful .... what a great attitude that she has .....
Easy workout for me. I really like that a distance runner is finally lifting and hitting the gym. This is the only distance girl runner I’ve seen lifting.
Erik Garcia you obvs don’t follow many female distance runners on IG 🤷🏼♀️
Sweet Georgia Frown that he’s seen. Why would he be following a lot of female distance runners
David Adesegun so perhaps he could make more informed comments?
Bruh I'm a female distance runner and I lift nearly every day
why do runners need arm strenght? just curious
r r helps so when you sprint, you use your arms to run faster/more efficiently, hence why having that arm strength helps you in races
r r do you run without your arms?
My gosh looking at their weight room I feel really grateful to have such a nice weight room at my high school. I’m sorry but who doesn’t put windows in a weight room??
Caitlin Schilbe bruh the window could break from a weight
a great athlete, hope she succeeds in the sport.
don't think this shit will hurt, but I'm thinking someone like Katlyn Thouy, not to mention anyone who just wants to train efficiently, should have a more running oriented protocol - if they're lifting to run better. Check out Knees Over Toes and think: nordics, ATG split squats, reverse step ups, and hip flexors. Maybe a little bit of deep dips and rows.
Good bless you .Gifted child.

Neil Sims u r soooo correkt, she sumhow mist8kenly haz 2 or 3 national recordz. she shudder kwit her coachez program & lissen 2 u since u havv guided soooooo many gr8 runnerz 😱
@@mahalkita7351 , taking her accomplishments to be automatic evidence against my claims is an appeal to accomplishment fallacy, and attacking (what you assume are) my lack of a successful strength coaching background is a credential fallacy. Do you have an actual argument against what I said, or just snark? My background is with strength athletes, like doing NFL combine prep, but I have worked with endurance athletes at elite levels as well. Her running is enough conditioning for running. If she wants to be stronger while she's doing it, she needs to do actual strength training, not circuits. What she is doing is not strength training.
@@neilsims6819 Except you don't need to do a lot of high weights of running. It's actually better to do more reps at a lighter weight than less reps at a higher weight
@@mikel6090 , that's false, and I'm happy to explain why. But it's also not relevant to my point. I didn't comment one which kind of training is "better." I commented on the claim in the video, that she is doing strength training. She isn't. She is doing conditioning with weights.
It’s good for these girls to do some training besides just running, but someone needs to Instruct them in swinging the kettle bell properly.Otherwise, they risk hurting their back and not getting the benefits that derive from doing a proper swing.
Yes, they're doing the kettlebell swings incorrectly
Yes, I was going to make the same comment. The kettlebell swing we saw was an abomination.
That looks like the camera man making a choice to only film close ups of her. I did not see any special attention as far as only working with her in the exercises. It was purposeful, hence the title.
New yorker pala ito si katelyn tuohy ♥️
What watch is that 🥴
45 years ago the coaches just let the best natural runners do what ever they wanted. I had to run 2x as much to be as good as them during the summer. Come fall xc coach only said run 3 miles.
Much better these days with a little science behind the training

1:30 Are they still using those kettle Balls?? My God, they are just terrible for your back. See how the weight hyper extends your lower back
when passing through the legs? A terrible idea. There are other exercises which do not strain and potentially hurt your lower back like
this one can. READ about it. My Chiropractor always advises against it.
if you do them wrong with a poor coach who doesnt know what he is doing, then yes, they can be dangerous, just like anything else.
