- Fauré (1845 - 1924) was a French composer, organist, pianist and teacher. He was one of the foremost French composers of his generation, and his musical style influenced many 20th-century composers. Among his best-known works are his Pavane, Requiem, Sicilienne, nocturnes for piano and the songs "Après un rêve" and "Clair de lune". Although his best-known and most accessible compositions are generally his earlier ones, Fauré composed many of his most highly regarded works in his later years, in a more harmonically and melodically complex style.
Fauré was born into a cultured but not especially musical family. His talent became clear when he was a young boy. At the age of nine, he was sent to the École Niedermeyer music college in Paris, where he was trained to be a church organist and choirmaster. Among his teachers was Camille Saint-Saëns, who became a lifelong friend. After graduating from the college in 1865, Fauré earned a modest living as an organist and teacher, leaving him little time for composition. When he became successful in his middle age, holding the important posts of organist of the Église de la Madeleine and director of the Paris Conservatoire, he still lacked time for composing; he retreated to the countryside in the summer holidays to concentrate on composition. By his last years, he was recognised in France as the leading French composer of his day. An unprecedented national musical tribute was held for him in Paris in 1922, headed by the president of the French Republic. Outside France, Fauré's music took decades to become widely accepted, except in Britain, where he had many admirers during his lifetime.
Fauré's music has been described as linking the end of Romanticism with the modernism of the second quarter of the 20th century. When he was born, Chopin was still composing, and by the time of Fauré's death, jazz and the atonal music of the Second Viennese School were being heard. The Grove Dictionary of Music and Musicians, which describes him as the most advanced composer of his generation in France, notes that his harmonic and melodic innovations influenced the teaching of harmony for later generations. During the last twenty years of his life, he suffered from increasing deafness. In contrast with the charm of his earlier music, his works from this period are sometimes elusive and withdrawn in character, and at other times turbulent and impassioned.
Sounds like Mendelssohn
Thank you for being with us again. If it were otherwise, we would have lost a beautiful layer of forgotten musical masterpieces, would have made us poorer.
One of my favorite composers. He is not exactly obscure. But at times he seems like my own "private" composer who always makes me feel happy, better, ennobled.
Oh, this is so beautiful, thanks for posting this, I can play, so I'm going to learn this, definitely.
Danke für das Geschenk. Es inspiriert mich für meine eigenen Kreationen auf dem Klavier. Wunderschön gespielt. Ich bekomme Gänsehaut
I’m sorry in advance, my comment will be a bit of a story time.
I’m happily surprised to have this wonderful piece appear in my recommendations. I’ve played it 11 years ago in a little concert (in front of around 150 people) and I was only 10 then. I have a bittersweet memory of this piece, as I was playing by heart and I lost myself at some point and completely panicked to the point where I stopped during the performance. I finally got it together but only after maybe 10 seconds. It crushed me to fail this performance as I really loved this piece and I remember crying and sobbing silently when I sat in the public after that :’) I was so proud and happy to have mastered this piece, only for my efforts to be shattered during 3 minutes of performance
But you tried!! You got out there in front of those 150 people and you did all you could. I hope you’re able to bask in the triumph of performing, regardless of the outcome. ❤
get over it, play it again in a trainstation piano !
To be able to play this magical piece at 10 years old is pretty impressive, imho. 💗
Really really good playing! sounds dreamy
This is, for me, among the most beautiful pieces ever written. It never fails to make me weep. I've often played it myself but never anywhere near this exquisitely (the countermelody is tricky for us amateurs). Lovely beyond words, and thanks for posting.
4th bar from the end is so sad!
So beautiful! I think your tempo is very nice for this piece. Also your phrasing and which notes you give weight in the left hand sounds just right.
Fauré était un immense compositeur, sa musique de chambre est d'une beauté incomparable.
Merci pour avoir posté cette petite merveille...comme un baume au coeur de tous ceux qui vivent l'instant. ❤
Magnifique oeuvre et très belle interprétation!
Merci.
Wow, I hear so much Mendelssohn in the accompaniment!
getroffen, ……danke😊
schön gesagt :)
Wow this is soooo sweet, is like musical honey from a wild, far away forest ❤
Your interpretations will always be one of the best I've ever heard!!
This is one of the most beautiful pieces I know. Thanks for recording it. 😍😍😍😍
Nice.
Truly incredible coincidence,I must play this piece for an exam, I'm really happy to be able to hear your own interpretation of the piece, I'll hope that I'll be able to reach your level and musicality someday... 💐
Do you have all these songs you play on a Spotify channel that I can follow? Amazing work dude🙏
This is the best version for this piece. Someone plays too fast and this one is just perfect. Very expressive!
« Too fast » ? That’s the composer’s tempo which shows 63 to the quarter note, and so Cortot played it, in two minutes time, continuing the tradition.
I agree to perform or hear it in a more “romantic” character, and much slower, but would such sentimentality be what Fauré really had in mind ? I’m not sure …
My pick would be the Alexandre Tharaud version, although his touch doesn’t sound very 1920’s …
PS : for God’ sake, would you please ALWAYS mention the pianist. Whose performance is this, here ?
I perform everything on this channel.
Amazing. I was just looking for a prelude to play for my church and this came up. What a beautiful piece and great performance.
I was about to comment that it sounds like a well known hymn that I can’t seem to place.
@@wungabunga The beginning of the melody reminds me of the American folk song "Red River Valley."
Why do I love faure more than Chopin ?
Matter of taste, I guess.
I can't answer that but I absolutely agree with you!
Maybe for its simplicity. Don't have have a ridiculously difficult music for it to sound lovely.
Linda!👏👏👏👏
Fauré is always subtle and understated; lyrical with klass.
This music is like medicine for me!
Only music can bring peace and calm to my heart!
You are a wonderful pianist!
Thank you!
Wunderschön gespielt, unglaublich ausdrucksstark und musikalisch! ❤

Beautiful recording. Tone, tempo, instrument and recording quality.
This a beautiful and relaxing piece, I might consider learning it. -- I'm not too familiar with many of his works at all.
This sounds like winter. I love it.
So brautiful, awesome...Congratulationd...❤🎉🎉😊
There's something about this man's music, whether piano, vocal, or chorale. I have heard it all...and performed one of his chorale pieces in college. This one, though, is particularly stunning. Interpretation is perfect, every note, you can just feel it in your soul.
Yes, Fauré was a "musician's musician." All of his music shows his incredible taste and craftsmanship.
In the loudly world, this song sounds like the silence. Beautiful!
Fauré always managed to elude me, so there’s much of his music I’ve never heard. I take solace in that, however, by realizing there’s yet so much to discover.
Thank you for introducing me to this piece which has become one of my all-time favorites! Having studied quite a few of the Field and Chopin nocturnes, I came across it several months ago when I was trying to familiarize myself with the Faure nocturnes. I hear in this particular melody a poignant sadness that is in the process of being infused with hope. Being an amateur pianist myself, I feel that this beautiful melody is representative of my return to the study of great keyboard music after being distracted away from it for a number of years.
On another note, my discovery of this piece was also my very first introduction to your channel. What a fortuitous find! You are leaving QUITE a legacy for lovers of beauty all over the world! Thank you for what you are doing!!
An amateur pianist ??? You must be kidding , or you have an amaaaazing teacher and you practise a lot !!! PS Apart from being very gifted of course.
Absolutely gorgeous. It's been a while since I've played this.
Your recording was gorgeous, as well.
Beautiful piece, and a very nice interpretation. Who is the pianist in the recording?
So sweet. An exquisite love song. ❤
Beautiful and expressive playing!
si yo presento esto en compo 2 de la unc sabes como me lo bardean q injusticia
Suspiciously like Mendelssohn.
beautiful!!! Thanks for sharing, and beautifully played!
oooh dat delicate, deze zo beschaafde emotie!! het ontroert mij hevig.
Beautiful piece 🙂🌺🎵
Expressive performance! Thanks for posting!
The last part is so clever. The piece is often played a bit faster, but sounds good as you play it.
Très belle interprétation!
Can you give me the sheet?
Fantasy on “Red River Valley”.
Traumhaft, entspannend. Grandios! Danke.
Absolutely superb! Thanks for posting
👏👏👏❤️
Прекрасное произведение и отличное исполнение. Браво!!!
This is my favorite Faure. Thank you. ❤
I am in love❤
who is the pianist here? thank you for posting this exquisite music...Faure is my favorite of the French composers,
Thank you for your beautiful rendition. It inspired me to create an orchestral arrangement of this musical gem. You can find it here: ruclips.net/video/NUF16tBewPM/видео.html. I also linked your video in the description. All the best, Klaus
Just downloaded it :), tnx again!
such a poised and delicate interpretation. those rubato and phrasing are beautiful, and the articulation voicing is so well figured out, especially in the last part where two hands play three voices.
Aonde as palavras não chegam,a música chega!
Grata
Très bon pour mon coeur. Merci pour ce partage.
Very beautiful, will learn it too 🎶🥰👏
Faure....what a beautiful piece you composed!
Absolutely stunning! 😍
Spent a long time on fingering this and then found this! Nice tempo
Utterly gorgeous!
J'ai déjà joué ce morceau à mon année de piano classique
Could be a soundtrack for Rafaello advertisement
Similar to Mendelssohn Op.19 no.1
❤❤❤아름답습니다
Grazie Gamma per il video di Faure
who is the PIANIST?
No the best piece by Gabriel Fauré I would say. Don't get crazy on the comments, but it's not a masterpiece as I can read.
So beautiful...
reminds me of elgar
Who is playing? it's really good i think!
Im playing all pieces on the channel. Thanks!
I love your performance!
That's a pretty one!
Where may one purchase this exact sheet music?
It does sound like a Kevin Kern composition at times.
🏵🍁🏵
Nice pièce. But played far too much rubato here.
I agree. I struggle a lot with the right amount of rubato. that's definitely something that I can improve in the future
Who's the pianist here? By far one of the better versions I've heard, others are just too fast for me
Thanks! I play all videos on the channel. I have a name but.. I'm just "random" person who likes music
you played it really good
Very pretty one.
So beautiful❤
Beaucoup trop de rubato.
Gorgeous!!
Loving it...❤️💘❤️
Hermosa pieza!
💗🌹🌷🌻🍀👍🔆✌️
Красивый романс! Большое спасибо!
Claire de lune?
No, not Clair de Lune by Debussy, it’s a piece by Faure
Precious.
❤❤
👌
Qui joue ? c'est mauvais, j'ai le mal de mer là
Love Malher❤
Thank you for your playing.
I love Fauré. But, I was disappointed by the melody. The bass is rhe most beautiful part.
If you think this is a bad melody, your melodic judgment is incredibly poor.
