Mélanie Chasselon - Nocturne "Abandon"

  • I think some of you will really like this :) A "peak romantic" very beautiful piece by a french composer, where it seems very hard to find any information about her. Even the lifedates provided on imslp seem conflicting: Her dates are 1873-1906, on the other hand this piece is supposedly first published in 1873, which is obviously impossible. I tried to play it in the romantic idiom, with a lot of rubato but still focusing on the nice melodic lines in a cantabile sort of way.

@Gamma1734 Mélanie Chasselon was born in Ligny-en-Barrois (East of France) in 1845 and died (single) in the same town in 1923. She was a music teacher, Ligny's church organ player and choir director.

As we stray from John Field, Frederic Chopin and JeanHenri Ravina we discover gems strewn across the transitional divide between the classical era and the piano based singer-songwriter era to follow half a century or so later. There is no doubt classical music in Europe (for want of a better descriptor) culminated to a peak that laid unshakable foundations for future ballads by numerous later to be called artists of the 1940s onward and beyond even now.
From a social point of view what a luxurious lifestyle it must’ve been to frequent small and medium-sized classical gatherings between the early 1800s and early 1900s. The foundations for what we know as modern music would be diligently, Studiously and passionately laid by a basket full of composers learning , evolving and building off that which had come up to 200 years before.
I 100% appreciate finding these lesser-known/lesser celebrated composers from an era in which they were holding their own.🙏🏽

It looks like the piece Fleur aimée valse de salon op. 20 was published in 1882 and Mrs Chasselon probably didn't compose it at 11 years old. My guess would be that she's way older than 1873 then. It's a shame we can't get much information about her but it might lead somewhere to contact Wise Music Group though, as they currently own the Heugel Editions which published most of her works.

So in regards to her life dates, it should be noted that it says (fl. 1873-1906), and the “fl.” is important. It means she “flourished” during that time, meaning that the first date is not her year of birth, but possibly the year of her earliest known piece, which seems to be this one.
