World Chess Champion Magnus Carlsen and Women's no. 1 Hou Yifan are among the 16-player field for the Goldmoney Asian Rapid, the 7th event on the $1.6 million Meltwater Champions Chess Tour, which runs from June 26 to July 4 on chess24. The 3-day preliminary stage sees the players face each other once before the bottom 8 are eliminated while the top 8 advance to a knockout consisting of 2-day matches.
The time control is 15 minutes for all moves, with a 10-second increment per move from move 1. The knockout match-ups consist of 4-game matches on the first two days. If the match score is 1:1, two 5+3 games are then played followed, if needed, by Armageddon, where White has 5 minutes to Black's 4 but a draw counts as a win for Black. it's funny how this game was somewhat quiet and was just lost by inaccuracies really, whereas Magnus game with Alireza was super sharp and both players blew their wins with big mistakes

Thats how you win against a weaker opponent. Just play positional chess and you will win eventually.

@@irfanyamashita7184 it's true, if you are playing someone weaker, complication benefits the weaker opponent because something surprisingly beneficial can emerge from an incalculable position. If the stronger play simply holds a tight position, there will be no surprise and no chance for the weaker player.
@ryan miller You're saying the opposite of what he is saying. Sacrificing against a weaker player is a mistake because there is a chance he could find a way to hold the material and beat you. This is serious counter play to allow. Playing a strong position generally means keeping a grip of the center and shutting down counterplay before it even begins, eventually leading to a long drawn out win where the weaker player never had a chance.
Kasporov's comment on Yifan tells her talent. If she focuses just on chess, she can achieve wonders. But at this moment, chess is just her 'hobby'.

giri games are more decisive nowdays radjabov is the most drawish player and with least competence stats from last 5 years
World Champ will never take a guaranteed draw line against someone 150 points below them with the white pieces.

A good example of this is that recent European Superbet tournament when Romanian people corrected his pronunciation of the name "Deac" over maybe 4 videos.

This always makes me sad because it's proof of how stale and pointless chess has become. It's more about memorizing positions than anything else at this point. That is one of the main reasons why Fischer Random Chess should become the default for tournaments.
