  • Sunni, Shīʿa, Salafi, Sufi, Deobandi, Ahl'l-Sunnah wa'l-Jamā'ah - Why do we have all these labels can't we just say we're Muslims and that's it!
To often our communities become divided on differences in thoughts and ideas, acknowledging & welcoming the various levels of religious beliefs is an important first step towards building diverse communities & bridging the gap to put all titles aside.
Join Shaykh Dr. Yasir Qadhi in this special address to the Muslim Students' Association (MSA) entitled 'Dealing with Theological Differences in the Real World'.
A talk not to be missed!
Pledge of Mutual Respect and Cooperation Between Sunni Muslim
Scholars, Organizations, and Students of Sacred Knowledge
Hold fast to the Rope of Allah, all together, and be not divided. (Qur'an, 3:103)
Surely, those who have made divisions in their religion and turned into factions, you
have nothing to do with them. Their case rests with Allah; then He will inform them of
what they used to do. (Qur'an, 6:159)
Recorded at the MSA National 2013 on 1st September 2013

God bless you. Very clever man speaking. We Christians desire the same: openess, tolerance, mutual help, respect and yet the courage to seek for God even if worshipping him in different way. I, as a Christian pastor, deeply respect many muslims, debate with them calmly, and can proudly say, they are my respected friends. We would need some speaker and scholar like dr. Qadhi in christianity today.

I'm glad someone finally tackled this sectarian stupidity head on. It's about time we stop trying to do the scholars' job and start respecting each other despite our differences and letting this self righteous zealous attitude go.
It really upsets me when a scholar of his stature gets called a shaytaan just because he isn't siding with their particular group. This tribal mentality has done enough harm.
We are all muslims before we are Sunni or Shia or Sufi or salafi after all.

Did you know that some scholars like Ibn hazm or al-qurtubi rejected the Hadith which says that 72 sects will go to hellfire? And you want to take this Hadith as fundamental for your creed?
Did you know that even the Sahaba differed in random aqida-aspects but never called each other innovators?
Did you know that even Ibn Taymiyya tried to unite Hanbalis/Salafis and Asharis?
Ibn Taymiyyah states [Majmū 'l-Fatāwā 3/227-229]:
“People know there was alienation and animosity between the Hanbalīs and the Asharīs. I was of those who strived to reconcile the Muslims’ hearts and unify them, in emulation of the command to hold fast to Allāh’s Rope. I removed most of the alienation that existed in the hearts. I clarified that al-Asharī was one of the most noble of the speculative theologians (Mutakallimūn) to ascribe to Imām Ahmad, may Allāh have mercy on him, and those like him who support his way, as al-Asharī himself mentions in his books.

In Islam's earlier history, female religious scholars were relatively common. Mohammad Akram Nadwi, a Sunni religious scholar, has compiled biographies of 8,000 female jurists, and orientalist Ignaz Goldziher earlier estimated that 15 percent of medieval hadith scholars were women.[121] After the 16th century, however, female scholars became fewer,[121] and today - while female activists and writers are relatively common - there has not been a significant female jurist in over 200 years

The big problem is that in our age, our most powerful enemy is the media, and even if you are taking the term "sunni" as adjective rather than a noun, this media group uses it to be a divisive weapon against us. Hence, I still strongly insist that the term must be very rarely use, in fact to be used only, when you are actually on the spot topic of differentiating us Muslims from the deviators of the followers of Qur'an and the Sunnah of Rasul SAW.

Assalamu alaikum wa rahmatullah there is only one way, and that is to follow the Qur'an and the Sunnah following the Prophet and the believers (way of the Sahaba, Tabi'een and their students). Brothers and sisters we don't just respect the Sahaba we love them Fisibillah as Allah Ta'ala has mentioned their noble status.
And whoever contradicts and opposes the Messenger (Muhammad SAW) after the right path has been shown clearly to him, and follows other than the believers' way. We shall keep him in the path he has chosen, and burn him in Hell - what an evil destination. Surah An-Nisa 115

In regards to the verse the Ikhwaanis always quote, "surely those who have made divisions in their religion and turned into factions you have nothing to do with them." Imam al-Baghawi said, "they are the people of BIDAH and desires." So this ayah is a proof AGAINST the Ikhwaanis. Yasir Qadhi and those who signed the pledge do not have true unity. Allah said about the Jews, "You would think they are united but their hearts are SCATTERED that is because they are a people who don't understand!"

Fear ALLAH we have enough hatred within the Muslims, leave your differences and keep faith in ALLAH, dont start unnecessary arguments without strong evidence.

This is your problem. You feel the need to be the judge and jury. The Qur'an teaches us that if we're confident, after we have made our points through clear discussion, if they still do not agree we leave such issues to Allah(SWT) to deal with them. If they are not posing a real threat to the lives of people, then it is ok and you can work in society together. Otherwise, the results are as you see now... a ridiculous failure.

What really happened Mr Yasir, you just said the word Shia, You had never ever uttered the word Shia before in all your lectures .All I heard was Rafidha.Rafidha. Rafidha. What really changed. When you talked about masjid, you should have said..... , We have sunnie masjid and Rafidha. masjid. You got to read Shia Theology and don't forget to read Nahj al-Balagha. This is all I can say to you.

      Mr. PeopleOfHadiths,
Bother Qadhi is a scholor himself(at least in my opinion) who most of the time makes real sense. You should have to follow any scholar, and you definitely should not be lazy.
Do your own research and follow what makes sense. Allah give us brain for a reason. Before you listen or follow a scholar take a look at his educational backgrounds and see how knowledgeable he/she is. What degrees does the scholar have...

nice sounding speech but is BS how can u unite with extreme deviants, these are not minor as yasir claim, its emaan and kufr, the greatest kufr (disbelief) is associating partners with Allah
