This is, put simply, the coolest Mazda Miata I've ever seen. Inspired by the Lotus Elan and other vintage British roadsters, this 1990 Miata features some of the finest detail work you'll see this side of a Singer 911, and performance dynamics to match. It's so cool and detailed we had to do an interview with David, its owner, before my drive to go over all the neat stuff.

Easily one of the coolest cars yet.
This IS* the coolest of this type of build (not straight track or something). Modular roofs for Pete's sake! Plus the obvious labor of love this guy went through since he bought the car in 1989. It isn't often I see a car on a One Take that I think could go on to more polished shows like Jay Leno's operation and what-not.
*Opinion, duh.
palmtrees bananapants can't disagree. Very tasteful vehicle
palmtrees bananapants I agree as well. the attention to detail and all the crafting is outstanding
This guy could sell these I would think.
palmtrees bananapants Undoubtedly. Matt even said his hands were freezing.
The owner of this car, Mr. Woolery is one of the nicest fellows in the Miata and car community. He's inspired me and many others with his attention to quality detail and choosing the real deal parts.
Hes the kind of guy that would open up his home and garage for us to work on our cars in the spirit of friendship- really the honest enthusiast type. His stable of cars is impressive too!
He has definitely One-Upped my Fastback One-take feature from a while ago.
ArtCenterMiata You and I said similar things about him. He's one of the best car nuts out there.
ArtCenterMiata yes I agree but I have a hard time believing that it took forever to get the windows though but I don't doubt that they weren't cheap!!
Real deal parts make ALL the difference
Oh my god, are you the OG owner of the silver NB? I know this comment is 6 years old but I hope you see this somehow. You have no idea how much I love your car lol I kept my NB partially because of you. I bought it 4 years ago and it had a couple problems, and I panicked after I couldn’t find the issue and decided I was going to sell it. It was my favorite and dream car since middle school, and I bought it when I was 18. Seeing your NB and other beautiful well built Miatas is what told me to keep mine, thank god i didn’t get rid of it. When I had my car before my NB, I saw yours and thought god, that’s how you build an NB. I saw all the videos, Speedhunters article, photos, forum and Instagram posts about that silver NB. I debated buying it when it came up for sale recently, I think a year or 2 ago by a really nice guy in California that owned and cared for it. But I couldn’t take the plunge, I’m in college so I can’t necessarily splurge on a fun weekend car unfortunately. It killed me to see it get parted out and only god knows where it’s at now.
For all it’s worth Matt Farah’s review of your car is my favorite review of his. Man you know how to build a car. I hope you’re doing well with your endeavors
@@mazda_miata_ cheers brother, the silver fastback was indeed mine :) and it's really awesome to read such praise for my car along your Miata build journey! I hear Matt even recently mentioned it in a podcast... Dang!
I built that car largely during my college years with various freelancing, life happenings, communities propelling it. Certainly was a canvas and part of me.
I now work in design for various vehicle and tech brands and the love carries through! I build other personal vehicles here and there now, but the Miata was a true story.
Thanks for chiming in!
There's a special kid of joy of watching someone have one of their best days ever at work. Matt loves that damn car and it's awesome!
Nick in the States definitely a special kid
Are we talking Goat Boy here?
This car is amazing, it's beautifully crafted too!
What an incredible "forever" machine the owner created!
Anita K Thats a great way of putting it.
and your not too bad either x
+kim jerreat that did not take long for some fedora man to come
He's not fedora enough. Couldn't even spell the correct version of "you're".
Tom T. Leave him alone - he's not wrong.
Today Mr Farrah sells undershirts and yells at us in a Miata
Jeremy Stig No homo nowadays is at least 20% from what Ive heard.
I don't understand why people think these jokes are funny. A 2 yr old could think of this
sk84life311 What jokes are you referring to?
I believe that's called begging the question.
Today Thunderclutch makes a Mr. Spaghetti esque comment.
Matt can you put some shots of the car stationary at the end of your videos not just at the start. I find myself always re-watching the start of the video to remind myself of what the car looks like.
matt usually has a link to most peoples wheelwells but sometimes a few more shots of the engine and body would be a nice touch
happyjayh agree! he really does need to showcase the cars better,it's always just some quick shots of the car and I keep having to pause or rewatch. I would love it if he would do a walk around then get some shots of the interior and motor. maybe not on some of the stock or barely modified cars but ones like this it's a shame he doesn't dedicate a solid couple minutes of just showing the build off.
happyjayh what's the problem with rewatching it the start? Only takes one click...
Agree ! And also in the middle of the video, when for example he talks about the dash or something that we can't see, that would be awesome
Javier E Yeah if it's something specific he's talking about like wheels/tires or an interior part that's a good idea.
I suggest you to make some "Thesmokingtire's awards" for cars you've been reviewed.
That is a cool idea!
Bebeto Fandi you have been offically pimped? xtothez
Needs more likes
Best daily, best modified, best exotic, best import, best muscle, etc?
that is genius
That interior is absolutely gorgeous.
"That i bought NEW in 1989 as a TEENAGER"
Wow. That must have been nice. lmao
Mr. Woolery! That car is pretty well known within the miata community.
God that ass end. Not a huge fan of the front, I think that could have been done a little better, but daym that fastback. That should have been an option from the factory.
Douglas Pealing It was for a limited time. Miata Coupes exist but honestly his custom solution looks better
It’s not custom made into a fastback. It’s just a custom hard top made by autokonexion. I’m not sure if they’re made anymore but you used to be able to get them for 1500 and they come with they’re own trunk to make the body lines flow
I used to think every modified Miata was the coolest Miata, but this easily takes the cake as not only the coolest Miata ever, but one of the coolest cars ever.
I like the different style intro to the car. If the owners are comfortable in front of the camera, you should have them intro the car everytime.
I've seen this build on one of the miata forums and the amount of time and effort spent on this is insane... Glad to see it featured here.
okay. I've watched many many if your one takes and this is by far the coolest car!! by a mile!
Thats one sick miata :D that interior is really nice :D and so light too
Joe spotted.
One of the best cars by far on this channel
Seriously one of the coolest cars i have ever seen. Love a modern(ish) car with vintage inspiration and modifications without sacrificing modern(ish) performance reliability and handling.
It's always good to see him genuinely happy driving a car.
Wow, Matt actually has some head room in a miata haha
These are my favorite One Takes. I appreciate owners who have passion and creativity much more than owners who simply have wealth. David, this is the prettiest Miata ever!
Such an amazing creation! You can tell that there was an incredibly high degree of craftsmanship both on the exterior and on the interior of the car! Best looking Miata I've ever seen for sure!
I love where people's passion and creativity take their cars
Experiencing it vicariously through this video is enough to put a smile on my face, I can only imagine what it's like in person.
This Miata is the perfect blend of everything that makes these kind of cars special. Big props to the owner!
WOOLERY!!! Everytime I see this car in person I get a reminder of why I love Miatas.
Gauge cluster and interior brings to mind something like an E-Type. Beautiful
Truly special
I can't wait til I get my 1990 Miata. It's videos like this that just brings great joy. That is one beautifully built car.
Always been looking for a high quality vid on this Miata since I saw it on the forums. This did the trick... thanks Matt.
This is without a doubt, the coolest miata I've ever seen, if not the coolest car I've ever seen. The interior, exterior, and power train are all perfect. The only thing I would change is the front end.
This car is so beautifully put together. I've never been a big fan of Miatas but this, this is something special
Adult no-longer-schlubby. I like it.
when a car is built the best way possible and you drive it, there simply are no words for it and there was points in this video where you were just driving it and had nothing to say from how awesome it is! props to the owner who built it!
I have one of those moments on Thursday's video as well, which i think is only the third time I've offered to buy a car on the spot.
excited to see it!
These ad's are becoming as entertaining as the main content. Keep it up Matt
That is definitely a special interpretation of a miata. Dude created a beautiful and powerful, yet balanced roadsters. Noiiice
I've never been envious of a Miata till now! beautiful build and I still can't get over how amazing the fastback looks.
Hey Matt, longtime viewier here. Thanks so much for interviewing the owner outside the car and giving a good rundown of the exterior. I really like the mix up! :)
That's got to be the COOLEST Miata in the states. The fast back really makes the car, beautiful build, prob one of the best on the show so far.
Kinda looks like a mix between an old MGB roadster and an old fiat 124 had a child and this is that love child. With that being said, love it! Stunning build and incredible engine note and turbo noises
The sound of the engine is exquisite. Music for my ears .
Best Miata I ever see. Period. So much job was made. That's crazy
Before I even watch the vid...
Matt, I gotta say, I'm really starting to enjoy your pieces at the start of each video. I'm getting to the point of wondering whose wares you're going to hawk next! You certainly find the most interesting and eclectic companies to support your endeavors! Keep up the good work!
Now, on to the vid!
Mario Funk thanks!
Awesome vid, awesome car!
Is this the week of oddballs? Best week ever! I know the new vehicles pay the bills but these are the ones we love.
I truly hope these videos and everything you do makes you a multi-millionaire. You bring so much entertainment to my life.
Oh my god, this is the most beautiful "Miata" I’ve ever seen
Never thought I'd like a Miata this much...incredible detail work
In 2002 I had a 1991 Miata with a Veilside wide body kit, SSR rims, SR20 engine and JIC suspension. It was incredible
This is indeed a special car and a true reflection of its unique owner. Thrilled to see it on Smoking Tire!
This is really cool I've been waiting to build my nostalgic looking Miata for about 2 years now can't wait.
Remember seeing this chap and his car on the FinalGear forums years ago. Awesome to see it getting some One Take love.
This is truly a unique and beautiful build. Kudos to that guy.
Not usually a big fan of the ads at the beginning but ribbed tees are straight magic
You wouldn't be as cold if you weren't wearing a undershirt that's thinner than paper. Love this build. Great job to the owner!
if he kept the fastback and left the front end alone....Art. Mazda should take note. 20x people would buy the miata in fastback or better yet flying brake format. Japanese clown shoe? Yes please.
Yeah, that front end is butt ugly. If my dog were that ugly, I'd have to shave it's ass and make it walk backwards.
This is probably the reason why MAZDA is selling a Miata Fastback since a couple months now... at least here in Germany
Markus Dietrich thats more like miata targa
Honestly, I would kill for a fastback NB miata and have been looking for a clean example of a stock NB for a while in my area.
Just when you though an NA Miata couldn't get any better. Absolutely beautiful build.
wow this thing is really a work of art, and to own it since your a teen makes it that much more special
I feel like this car deserves its own in depth special episode.
I love seeing these types of cars/builds featured on here.
that car is fantastic. the cool factor is through the roof.
Never been a huge fan of that front end but the rest of it’s so perfect I can almost forgive it.
The voice of Matt in this TST-One Take brought to you by Penn Jillette.
Honestly, my ideal miata, aside from the front end conversion and vintage styling. But that's purely personal taste in aesthetics. Functionally, this car looks to be fully dialed in. Mad props to the owner.
Love the quality of the 1080p60 video! Love the subject matter of the show even more - what an awesome looking Mazda!
David is the man. He has some very cool cars and is one of the friendliest and most generous guys you'll ever meet. I've seen this car many times and hung out with David at meets and at his home tech days but have never even sat in it! That will change.
That interior is incredible
Making a vintage car even more vintage. Really cool build, the interior looks beautiful
Great car! Thanks to the owner for letting us experience a bit of it.
GORGEOUS! miata goals for sure! I love that chrome / red interior. I have an LE, so that are some sick goals!
I don't typically like Miata's but this is a gem, David really outdid himself here.
The exhaust note is gorgeous!
so far the best car i have seen thru your channel! its truly special!
this is my favorite one take by far. i like this style of the intro better when the owner is speaking about the car, rather them inside while them on the drive.
That interior is incredible. Very cool build. I love the wheel and the shifter. Everything is done so nicely. He made a classic sports car out of a Miata, very well done.
Congrats on 700k Matt, awesome video as usual, that's one badass Miata. Definitely made to be different and stand out.
Garage Woolery Miata is legendary. I followed the blog through the whole glass making saga
Been a fan of this Miata since forever! No joke was looking for a exhaust video last night!
Now that is one badass little Miata! Mazda should have made the fastback available in production.
Now that is passion for motoring.
That car just makes me smile lol.
i love everything about this car. kudos to the owner.
One of my favs so far just love the lil car. Good job on describing how the car feels and makes you feel it's always cool to see a true car guy get excited about a awesome car.
just that the guy bought the car new as a teenager and kept it 30 years is impressive. his work is priceless at this point!
That roll bar setup is what I'm looking for as well. It's freaking great.
That car is the equivalent of about 450 to 500 horsepower with that power to weight ratio! Cool as hell Matt! Thank you for this one!
Game over, I now want an old Miata. If I can make it look like a classic, but have a modern car underneath...yes!
Ohhh, Yeah !!!!!!!!!! That was fun ! Never seen this model before.
Wow. Just wow. Huge respect to this guy.
Mate, great review!
That car is outstanding, it looks the part and clearly looks like it delivers! I'm mightily impressed. You're one privileged man to drive that brilliant car. Undoubtedly, a visceral experience you'll never forget.
What a fantastic toy. Loving the interior and the front.
This has to be one of the cleanest cars I've ever seen.
One of the best builds ever made!
this is got to be in the top 5 coolest cars ever on the channel. I want that thing so bad.
Love this. Most projects like this end up being tacky, but this is clean af.
Truly unique. That is awesome and I like the sound a lot.
Wow... That is perfection. It's like a GT6 and a Shelby Daytona had a kid on a Miata platform.
Please another episode showing all the configurations. Beautiful car!
He took the door windows out to make the car lighter!!
That guy is my hero lol
Miata is always the answer ... love the noise!!!
the inside looks amazing.
(David) Woolery is a legend in the socal miata scene. Used to invite everyone to his garage where they could use his lift and tools at their disposal, always giving a helping hand. Rides in his Ariel Atom and Exige. Haven't been in the scene for years, good to see he and the car still looking good and going strong.
