Love the video! I love using my 66k treadle it just sews so happily and reliably. Practice makes perfect and it doesn't take long before it becomes second nature. Everyone should have a treadle machine. 😊
i just got a treadle, my 2nd one. It was able to sew a complete canvas car cover that a modern day machine struggled with. And yes! My "grandma" had the clunk, so thank you for making this video.
Love my treadle (Pearl) just the ticking as she’s whizzing along is so soothing. I shall keep watching as I’m sure my belt installation was more down to luck than judgement!
I have a 1904 27 with the Sphinx decals. I have a hand crank to put on it, but I do have several treadle too. So thanks for showing me how to get things moving on a Singer because I learned to sew on a White.
So happy to have found you and your excellent videos. I’ve had my Grammy’s Elgin 1924 machine for 30+ years but never used it. My goal is to learn and enjoy it for its 100th birthday. Then pass what I learn to my daughter and granddaughter. From Pennsylvania.
these videos are literally coming in my hour of need, I've been trying to figure out the treadle machine that's been sitting in my grandma's dining room for forever seems like we'll probably need to oil it before I can actually use it though, the hand wheel doesn't quite spin freely like yours does (and I also have no idea what specific type it is other than that the brand is Singer haha)
We must be on the same wavelength lol! 😊 There should be a serial number at the base of the pillar. You can use that to help you figure out what model it is. I walk you through how to do that in this video: ruclips.net/video/DwpBm7UOz6I/видео.html
Advanced treadler here. It does take a great deal of time to learn. But once you do, you'll find it superior to a motor because you can control each and every stitch. I can stitch one stitch at a time if I want to, and have absolute control over the speed. I almost never need to use my hand to spin the wheel. Practice makes perfect. If you want to see some advanced treading, look up Tim Latimer's RUclips channel.
Thank you. Thank you. I bought a treadle sewing machine years ago. No rust. Seems to be in good working order. Needs a belt for me to confirm that. Never used it. Really want to learn, but haven't had the time, but will soon. Appreciate your lessons. I am long time subscriber.
You're welcome! Thanks so much for subscribing and for you support! That means a lot to me. Let me know when you get your treadle up and running. I'd love to hear how you get on! 🙂
We’re collecting a Singer 201K treadle machine this evening. I used to do it every time I visited my Nana but that was over 50 years ago? :). I’m so looking forward to using her.
I have wanted a treadle machine since I was about 12 (50 years ago!) and have just bought one. I was a bit nervous as to how I was going to learn how to use it, but having found your channel, I know just where to go for advice! Looking forward to getting started.
I just bought a singer phoenix treadle in cabinent & has a coffin wooden top cover paid 150$ at a tiny rural mennonite used stuff shop. It needs a belt but the parts moved freely.
Really loved your video, thank you. Just bought an identical treadle machine this week, and have never used one before, I've had an Identical hand crank machine for 30 years, so are familiar with its operation thankfully. My machine looks like it's been used as a piece of furniture, as the woodwork is immaculate and the machine looks like it's been down a coal mine, so I've actually swapped it out for my old one to get started while I clean and service the "new one" Please could you tell me the purpose of the spring hinge on the metal plate that the belt passes through? and does this cabinet use a "standard" key for the drawers and lid please? Thanks again for the super well explained video, I was all set to dive straight in with a threaded machine, but your way is so much better! Just bought 2 new belts, so I'll watch the next video. Incidentally, although, I presume that this has the original machine meant for a treadle ( as the two fixing hinges on the machine are secured with set screws, to prevent the machine falling out when hinged down ( my older machine just has holes to accommodate the different hinges for the box case) It has a hand crank fitted, for which I'm grateful, as I suspect for any precise work such as leather key fobs, i'll be using that! Best wishes....Pete
The hinged metal plate is for asthetics. It makes the machine look flush with the table or cabinet. It also stops bits and bobs like pins and scissors falling through the hole. The plate moves downwards with the machine to allow room for the handwheel to fit through the hole. Without knowing what cabinet you have, I can't really say what key will fit. Different styles had different keys. Check eBay for similar cabinets to see if you can find a key to fit. It is very possible that your machine could have been both hand crank and treadle. I know a few of the earlier Singer 15s were! What a great find! Thanks for watching 🙂
Can you offer any suggestions on where one might find parts. Specifically, I am looking for the belt (mine is broken in many places) and a key for the cabinet. Thank you in advance. Awesome video!
Do you mean the treadle belt? Try this link: amzn.to/48kTObZ (Amazon affiliate link) Original keys are hard to find. Try antique stores, 2nd hand stores, charity shops, and eBay. Alternatively, you could try a modern replacement like this one: amzn.to/3MQzgQk It might fit depending on the machine you have. Thanks for watching 🙂
Thanks, that was helpful. I'm looking at a Singer 201 in a treadle table similar to yours in a local auction, and was wondering how difficult it was to use. You made it look simple. How slow can you go? Did it take you a while to get the rhythm of the pedal right? I guess it's like a car, eventually you learn to push the clutch down without thinking about it when you change gear, and treadling is similar?
The more practice you have, the easier it will be to go real slow. In the meantime, the great thing with a treadle is, you can turn the hand wheel instead of pedaling to get a speed of one stitch at a time. Yes, it takes time to get the rhythm. It's just practice and use. Bit more like learning how to ride a bike. Thanks for watching and I hope you win the auction! The 201 is a great machine!
Thanks for that! I'll see if I can buy it and get it working. I've got a 99K and a 201K both hand cranks, and a brown 1970s electric monstrosity already, hopefully I can get the treadle to join them. Thanks again and happy sewing@@SimplyStitchy
I can't get the treadle to engage the needle. I have to physically turn the wheel to make the needle to go up and down and then when I treadle it still doesn't engage the needle. I've checked the cord to make sure it was neither too tight nor too loose. What else can I try?
Without seeing what is happening it's a bit hard to say. Is the stop motion screw engaged? Try turning the stop motion screw to the right and try again. Is the treadle belt slipping? If it is, you might need a new belt or it might need tightening. There needs to be a bit of slack but not too much. Check out this video to see how it should look: ruclips.net/video/dRZ1og4j0ME/видео.htmlsi=Q1OAR-9TwRL4Lw52 When was the last time you oiled the machine and the treadle mechanism? It could need oiling.
Hi there, the wheel + treadle work perfectly when disengaged, but as soon as I engage the needle, the wheel doesn't turn properly. Do you have any suggestions as to why that might be?
I’m sorry, love. But I find this video a bit confusing. How to avoid damaging the needle while practicing? & how do you put the threads in? You talked about your grandma, using two legs & your cat more than those two things I was looking for.
Threading a Singer 27: ruclips.net/video/WR4ihVg36ow/видео.html ... time stamp 01:00 to prevent any further confusion, mate. The needle will be fine. It's designed to go up and down... and that's all it will be doing. You can remove it if you are concerned.

I want to suggest TriFlow lubricant. The best for use on sewing machines.
I've just purchased a singer treadle machine and am so excited. Your videos have been a life saver!!
That's great news! I'm glad I could help! Thanks for watching 🙂
I love how she sings! Thank you for all of your useful videos!!! Loads of help!
You're welcome! Thanks for watching! 🙂
LOL got a little rawkus with the treadling there 😂 but wow does that take a lot of coordination and skill!

Have you checked the clutch? It's the little wheel inside the hand wheel that engages or disengages the needle. It might need a clean or just oiling.
