Restoring a Singer 66: Cleaning the Tension Disc Assembly
the #15 was in continuous production for 50 years. The most popular, and the most copied/cloned machine ever. I have an Aussie made clone, and love it.
My 50 y.o. Bernina is a workhorse and all I need. Also, it's made with metal parts, not plastic.
I need help with this. My bf’s ex Amish and knows this machine well but doesn’t remember how to thread the string.
This video ruclips.net/video/nOLAYiCt29I/видео.htmlsi=PqyQHDmPCQ7vqxHL shows how to load the bobbin and thread the Singer 66. The start of the video shows how to maintain the machine but the threading starts at time stamp 01:29. Hope that helps. Thanks for watching. 🙂
The only down side of your pink singer is the plastic gears. I am almost certain that model has them because I have seen them shredded before in one. The WHOLE machine required stripped down to get to them. The kenmore you have is great though, solid machines.
I think the motor on the Pink machine is going to croak before the gears... which is a shame because it has one of the absolute straightest stitches of all my machines. Thanks for watching 🙂
@@SimplyStitchy Not sure about that specific model but the commutator may just need cleaned or the brushes replaced. Most singers from that era don't have brushes that are easily replaced from the outside but it is worth a check. A lot of singers from that era and newer have a fairly easy to replace motor though. Good luck with it. If you do fix the motor it would be worth taking a screwdriver to one of the plastic gears and seeing if the plastic easily crumbles and scratches off first. They tend to deteriorate on 70's-90's singers.
That's a good idea! I'm going to give that a try. Thanks for the tip 😀
Singer Touch and Sews are great machines. I don’t listen to those who hate them. The Singer Company made great products.
While good, it would nice to have dimensions and better close ups. I only have 1 machine and needing to get more bobbins, so I don't have other bobbins to compare it to.
Try one of my longer videos - ruclips.net/video/t1jW_kE5I5k/видео.htmlsi=LF2lBzmLYosvMsoT this one has dimensions for two of the more popular bobbin styles. While this video - ruclips.net/video/SFPeUuxMxP0/видео.htmlsi=JKq2NhvdM1eE8yhK gives a close up of how different types of bobbins look when put in the wrong machine. Hope those help. If not, let me know make, model and age of your machine and I'll look it up for you. Thanks for watching 🙂
@SimplyStitchy thank you for quick reply! It now seems that my (1976) Futura series 920 might take a different size bobbin anyhow

I have recently purchased new metal 66 bobbins and they wouldn’t go onto the shaft of the bobbin winder.
I'm not sure why, but Singer used different shaft sizes in different bobbin winders. So yes, unfortunately, some bobbin winders won't work with the newer metal Class 66 bobbins. However, you might be able to get an external bobbin winder that can wind them for you. This one might work: amzn.to/406Jtyr
I absolutely love your channel I really trust what you say I’m a old timer 76 years old my mom made her living sewing in a factory so I’ve been around sewing all my life. So you and I seem to have the same ideas on just about everything. It’s good to watch your videos and feel your giving new to the sewing world good advice
Thank you! That means a lot to me and I appreciate you saying it! 😊 Thanks so much for watching and for supporting the channel. You have totally made my day!! 😀
Use a fork to scrape that old thread off
That's a good idea!
The tables are, is good condition, always available around my area for less than $20, so figure time and supplies before deciding to refurbish that table. Thanks for helpful video.
That's great advice! It's definitely worth considering the time and cost involved before embarking on a restoration project. Thanks for watching! 🙂
I just bought a singer phoenix treadle in cabinent & has a coffin wooden top cover paid 150$ at a tiny rural mennonite used stuff shop. It needs a belt but the parts moved freely.
Sounds like you got a great deal! I hope you can get it up and running soon! Thanks for watching 🙂
I just found you this evening. Your treadle machine video popped up. I recently found an elderly gentleman with a long history of working on antique machines. I’d spent over 20 years trying to find someone to work on my treadle. He was game and did a darn good job on restoring it. His caregivers helped him with the heavier parts. It’s an Elias Howe Jr. treadle machine, circa 1856…he thinks. I have it at home, now. I’m excited…but also terrified of screwing something up. I’m totally new to treadling, and was recently gifted an antique Franklin treadle in it’s cabinet. I know this is lengthy & I’m finding your treadle videos helpful.
That's so cool! I don't think it's possible to screw treadles up by using them. They are incredibly forgiving! You'll be a confident treadle user in no time! 🙂 Thanks so much for sharing and for watching! 😊
It’s New Year’s Day 2025 for me today and I just bought one of those Singer simples just a couple of months ago to be my light weight carry to sewing get together instead of my heavy weight machine I’m pleased to see you have one. I love your videos
Happy New Year! I love my Singer Simple. He's my go-to for quick repairs because he's easy to set up... and a lot lighter than some of my other machines! Thanks for watching! 🙂
Thank you. I have had my great grandmother’s old singer sitting here for about 6 years with no belt. I thought it would be difficult and expensive to put a belt on it. Wow. I’m ordering a belt and giving this a try.
You're welcome! 😊 Thanks for watching🙂
Thank you so much!!
You're welcome!! Hope it helps 🙂
There seems to be a lot of faffing about. I usually just go to my treadle 66, engage the belt and sew. The hardest thing I might need to do is to thread the needle or wind a bobbin. Love the video and love the way that you try to cover as many aspects of sewing as possible.😊

I have one with # w71490 I can't find anything on it can you please help thanks love your videos by the way.😊
Unfortunately, I can't help identify your machine without seeing pictures of it. Off the top of my head, the only company I can think of that used 'w' in their serial numbers is Wheeler & Wilson. So it could be one of theirs. But it could just as easily be a different company. Have you tried the Google Lens app? Take a picture of your machine and use the app - it should bring up some similar looking machines.
@SimplyStitchy it's a Singer rotary and that's what I can see but can't find anything else on it . Thanks so much for your help!!!
@@Jimmy-iz1nu That makes sense. Singer bought Wheeler & Wilson in around about 1905. Wheeler and Wilson were focused towards industrial use so they tended to be rotary hooks. Singer carried on using the W&W serial numbers although the machines were badged Singer. Check out this video: ruclips.net/video/_a5BQ0XFTuw/видео.html Does your machine look the same? I'm still wary about saying it's a W&W for sure, I think the serial number might have some digits missing as I thought they were 6 or 7 digits during Singer's ownership.
@SimplyStitchy that was it thanks so much .
You're welcome! 🙂
Thankyou for sharing your sewing journey. I've recently restored a singer 28k parlour and now retired and living off grid look forward to engaging again with a treadle. 🙏 for your energy and passion for simplicity.
You're welcome! Thanks for watching 🙂
Was all my pleasure
This was a great video!
I totally agree. Through multiple layers and experiences, we continually deepen our understanding on the the engineering and history of these fascinating machines. 🥰
I just got my sewing machine and I’ve done everything perfectly step by step and it’s still not working and the arrow button is still red so I can’t sew
You sure you have it threaded correctly? Have you lowered the presser foot? Have you accidentally pushed the lock button?
@ I’ve done everything! We got it to work to where it would start but now it’s not sewing
@@ur.fav.brunette7 I think the easiest way for me to help is to do a step-by-step tutorial video for you. Give me a couple of days. I'll send you the link when its ready.
@ omg thank you!!!!
@ur.fav.brunette7 You're welcome! :D ruclips.net/video/zjH88Z0ogaI/видео.html
Doesn't work for me.
Give this one a try: amzn.to/3DyIrnb (Amazon affiliate Link)
I am really surprised so many of the sewing people out there get their fingers so close to the needle. I realize the machine is off, but I do not want to get in the habit, so I use the tiny scissors. I have not sewn since high school, but am now starting a project. Our teacher was wonderful and always stressed safety.
Scissors? You might be safer with one of these: amzn.to/4iP532X Thanks for watching 🙂
The way I understand it is the groove in the needle is on the opposite side of the scarf. The scarf is where the hook passes through .Therefore the grove is where the thread is guided through the material. It is pulled alongside the needle. So if you thread from left to right then the groove is always on the side that you thread from. Simple way to remember for all machines.
Good presentation, I think, but the music was too loud and distracting.
Sorry about that. I've been working on fixing the sound levels, so hopefully, the next videos will be better. Thanks for watching 🙂
hi iam from india recently purchased singer 4452 sewing machine from usa but that machine is not compatible with indian power sockets,so please suggest how many watts voltage converter should i use for that sewing machine
The watts of your machine should be on the info label by the motor. Make sure the watts on the converter are more than the wattage on the machine. For my machine, a Janome, I use a 500 watt converter. Thanks for watching 🙂
@SimplyStitchy thanks for reply,in indian houses we have 230v power supply, but i want to import a SINGER 4452 sewing machine from usa which is having,Watts-84 Volts(120) Hz(60) suggest me according these specifications how many watts converter should i use
hi i bought a 110v sewing machine from usa and for that only voltage converter enough or voltage stabilizer also needed or not
You can just use a voltage converter, but if you're concerned about power fluctuations, a stabilizer might be a good idea too.
@SimplyStitchy thankyou for the reply, iam from india, and i want to import SINGER 4452 from usa,so please suggest me how many watts converter should i use, because in india we generally have 230v sockets in houses
It depends on the wattage of your machine. Most domestic sewing machines are between 50 - 100 watts, depending on the brand and size of motor. The converter you go for should be rated at a higher wattage than your machine. So if you have a 100 Watt machine you can go for a 300 watt or 500 watt converter. I use a 500 watt converter to step my Janome down from 230 volts to the US 110 volts.
I’ve watched a lot of your videos recently. I watched a video about vintage machine feet that were unusual. One was a stop foot of some sort. I’m just wondering was this you? I have a feeling it was, but I can not for the life of me find it. Cheers
I think it was the Vintage Sewing Machine Garage: ruclips.net/video/sl-W4zE_F08/видео.htmlsi=xi_VJCg2DtRKUtZ5 😉 🙂
@ Hi and thank you so much for the reply! Unfortunately it wasn’t that one. I think there were just 3 unusual feet and one was some kind of stop foot. I wish I’d have saved that video! I really thought it was you. I’ll keep searching. Love watching your videos from Australia 🇦🇺
Can you help me locate a singer 27 bobbin winder.
eBay is your best bet. Or put a call out on the vintage sewing machine groups on Facebook.
I love the vintage machines, I wish my mother had kept hers, never liked her trade up.
Thus, for those of us with vintage machines e.g. 201, does the lower-case “h” perform any different than the upper-case “H”? This will assist me in my upcoming purchase. 🥰
As the 201 is the upgraded 66 then, in theory, the 'h' should work a treat. I don't have a 201 to test the 'h' on, so I can't say for definite. The conclusion I came to, from the machines I tested, the 'newer' your older machine - the better! Grandma, my Singer 27, hated the 'h', even though it matched her feed dogs. She liked the 'H' teamed with cotton. Yet, Robyn, my Singer 66, loved the 'h' and didn't like the 'H' style. But then she isn't as fussy about cotton or polyester. Of course, this could just mean that Grandma's feed dogs are shot. Or it could mean that machines dating from the 1940s onwards will work better with the 'h'. If it was my 201, I'd try the 'h' style first. Hope that helps. Thanks for watching 🙂
@ It does help; thank you! BTW, did I fail to mention that I love your channel! 👏 Normally, I’m a 201/404 sewist. But, just recently acquired a 127 hand-crank (after-market). But, I just HAD to have a hand-crank machine in my small collection. ❤️
So the L style SA-159 for the Brother PR 655 6 needle will not work with this winder? The bobbin winders that are suppose to work are nearly 300.00 and this is completely ridicules. Thank you for this video.
I've double-checked and the L style bobbin doesn't fit on my Simplicity Side Winder. This particular external bobbin winder works with standard domestic sewing machine bobbins like the Class 15. For L style bobbins, have you tried this type of winder: amzn.to/4gQsR4R (Amazon affiliate link) Thanks for watching! 🙂
I have noticed that shuttle machines don't tend to do as well as round bobbin machines with things like walking foot or button holers. I guess that they each have their strengths, walking feet weren't about when grandma was made. Great video, it highlights some points that I have noticed.😊
I received a Golden Touch and Sew for my birthday in 1971. I love it. When I was looking at these machines, I was told it was the last Singer that was all metal. 20 years later I found out there were nylon gears. I was angry to learn this but my machine just kept on going, no problems. I love the way the bobbin winds. To me, when told to push a button, it is downwards. One time of pushing the button was enough to see that it sort of slides to the left, no problem. The fact that the thread ready to go after the bobbin winds means no tying a knot or backward stitch to begin! Great. Now for the rest, I kept my instruction manual on my lap to make sure I had all the knobs and selectors in the right place for any stitch I was planning to use. I love my machine. Now, because of those darned nylon gears, I scared to used it for anything hard or thick. The last time I had it serviced, I was told the gears were showing their age and to use it gingerly. I was told the gears were no longer available (that’s a lie) so I bought a new machine and I hate it. I recently bought a 503 and I’m going through it, oiling and cleaning. It looks great.
I like the clunk
8:10 there’s also a risk that you’ll catch the VSMR Virus (vintage sewing machine repair), which has been known to overtake your life 😂. I caught it from a 201k-23, and about two months in symptoms began to show when I picked up an out of order 1954 Japan Badge zig-zagger just because it was cheap & gorgeous, then a 201k-3 from an opshop simply because of the knee lever (or so I told my husband), and soon I couldn’t walk away from any old “fixable” bargain, or think about anything outside decals, bobbin winders, and shellac. Now it’s 10 machines and counting, every plastic modern thing has gone into storage, and my pile of sewing projects is growing..🫣 Worse thing is… I really don’t want to be cured!
As a fellow sufferer of the VSMR virus, I am happy to say - there isn't a cure 😆 We are both destined to save and repair vintage sewing machines... forever! Lol... I think I'm good with that 😀 Thanks for watching 😉
Can this overlocker Do a 2 THREAD CHAIN STITCH ?
The Janome Mylock 634D is capable of 2, 3, or 4 thread overlocking. So yes, it can do a 2 thread stitch or chain stitch. However, it will need an attachment known as a Spreader. You should have one in your accessories. If not, you can purchase them separately. Google Janome My Lock Spreader. You'll also need the manual for the Mylock. There's a free one here: www.poconosewandvac.com/products/janome/machines/634d?associated=instruction-manuals Thanks for watching! 🙂
Hello, I'm thinking of buying a Janome reproduction handcrank model 131 (same basically as a New Home 131). It uses regular bobbins and can be converted to a treadle base if desired. I believe it also has a potted motor on it, too, but I'm not sure. The current owner bought it from a sew and vac shop owner, and it looks well cared for. It's a bit of a drive so I'm going to see it at the end of the week. Have you ever seen one of these machines? They kind of seem like a good mix of old and new. Aside from being as heavy as any other cast iron, I think the flexibility of being able to adapt it into a treadle is interesting and naturally I'm pretty keen on the modern bobbin. Intended use would be quilt tops, light casual garments like pajamas, aprons and scrub tops for housecleaning, maybe totes and handbags. I'm an intermediate level sewist and I have an electronic Singer. My urge to buy this one is the idea my husband and I might start living half the year in an off grid cabin, and the less demand on the solar panels, the better. Any thoughts you have for red or green flags when I go see it would be appreciated.
The Janome 131 is basically a modern version of the Singer 15 clone. As a class 15, it will be a low shank machine that takes standard class 15 bobbins and class 15 needles. It'll also be straight stitch only. Things to look for - make sure it's in good working order and runs smooth - The hand wheel should spin freely - Check the stop motion screw disengages the needle for bobbin winding - Make sure you take fabric and thread so you can sew with the machine. Does it have reverse? Test that too! It should purr when it sews. There shouldn't be any weird clunks or thunks. (A slight ding ding when the hand crank arm hits the hand wheel is fine :D) Check to see if you get any accessories with it. They aren't essential but a few spare bobbins and some extra sewing feet would be nice.
I just got mine today 😊am excited
Im a little nervous after the intro cuz i was just gifted one of these lol but comments make me feel better cuz mine is all metal one. Im excited to checj it out and learn avout all the feet and fashion disks cuz im a newbie! Mine came wirh the crazy button holer and all the fashion disks and even some pleating foot? The Touch & Sews have a bad reputation that I don't think they deserve. They are actually pretty cool machines! Enjoy getting to know yours! Thanks for watching 🙂
Glad you're fixing her up! Judging by the decals, she'd clearly had a long working life before getting all gacked up. I've never owned or really used a modern sewing machine, but I get the impression that they're supposed to be basically maintenance free. I'd bet that someone got this from grandma and just ran it until it jammed up.
I love my 28k almost perfect condition and only 5,000 made when I searched her serial number. June 1923
When my I turned the stop motion skrew towards me and held the wheel it still didn’t disengage my needle? Any advice?
Sounds like it needs cleaning and lubricating. I show you how to do that in this video from timestamp 06:56. Hope it helps 🙂
Are all replacement belts made the same or are some cheaper quality? What material or brand is best, and where's the best place to buy them? Amazon has 4 belts for 10 bucks..are they good or junky? Thanks.
You mean this set? : amzn.to/48kTObZ To be honest, they are all pretty much of a muchness. There isn't a specific brand that's better than any of the others. As long as it's made from real leather, then it should be good. Most of the price differences are down to what else comes with the belt and the store selling it. Thanks for watching! 🙂
Wow it’s I confusing ..I’m new to this and I just bought a hometheater seats .that I want to reupholster.would 40wt thread be good for vinyl.im using an old 1946 singer 99k .sewing machine … thanks
You should be OK with 40wt All Purpose thread. Although, it depends on the thickness of your vinyl. Heavier vinyls might be better with upholstery thread. Some upholstery thread is too thick for some domestic sewing machines though - so be careful on the thickness of your vinyl. Watch your needle size too! It needs to match the thickness of your thread. Try these: amzn.to/4izAbn8 For 40wt thread and lightweight vinyl, an 80/12 needle should be OK. Do a test run first. You might need to go up a size to 90/14. Hope that helps.
