Best I can figure is that she had an easier time getting custody because she was in the same country (as the children), & her son (the only surviving parent/guardian) may have left some sort of paperwork indicating who should get custody in his absence. Regular custody battles are bad enough, but international ones are a drawn out bureaucratic mess.

Well from all the podcasts I have watched about murders in Canada it seems as though the justice system in Canada is not better. He might be still free if he has done it in Canada, but the grandparents most likely would have gotten custody of the grandchildren.
