- Here's a video of our 2018 Halloween decorations. We tried something new this year and it turned out to be a big hit! I know the video is a bit long but it shows the projection mapping we did to redecorate our house all at once, fun stuff!
Big thanks to AtmosFX for selling the awesome ghost animations and other scary stuff!
Also a big thanks to ProjectThisHouse here on youtube for the inspiration!
Here's the tutorial I used to learn how to set this whole thing up:
• House Projection Mappi...
The Front of the house was all done with one projector, a short throw Optoma GT760A 720p. It's 3200 lumens. The side, porch, and living room had separate cheap LED projectors. Let me know if you have any questions, I'll do my best to answer.
Quite possibly, the coolest thing I've ever seen in my life!
Quite possibly, the best youtube comment I've ever received in my life! THANKS!
Got to say I really like this tech for decorating. I imagine you could start out kid friendly early in the evening and go more scary as night goes on.
Possibilities seem endless for any holiday or celebration.
Thanks, actually that's a great idea! Go friendly early on and more scary later, I like it.
Seriously, who thumbs-downs stuff like this? This is incredible stuff!
Thanks! Glad you liked it, I was wondering the same thing... oh well.

@@helidaho The attention to detail is amazing!!! The faces coming out of the walls, the highlight and accent lighting, and the freaky painting demon running at you. Very cool!!!
Absolutely loved this, especially when you look in the window, & see the shadow woman, then the pictures start to move. Loved it. ( & I Watch a lot...😁 )
Thanks so much, glad you liked it!
An enigma, wrapped up in an anomaly, and shrouded in mystery...
Really Nice Job! Great attn to detail throughout! Love the additional projectors to keep the atmosphere (portrait gallery in the house etc )
Thanks, glad you liked it. It was a lot of fun.
Absolutely fantastic. It all looks so clean and the details are fantastic. Love the added projectors, they really add to the whole feel.
Thank you very much, glad you liked it.
Wow!! That looked so real it was scary. Great stuff! 🙂
Thank you!
This one is the best I like the sound effects
Thanks! Although I can't really take much credit for the sound effects as it's mostly from AtmosFX

Looks amazing. Where did you get the projection video for the moving painting on the inside?
Thanks! Glad you liked it. The moving paintings in the living room also came from AtmosFX. Don’t recall which package they were in... sorry.

that was amazing..what are you doing this year?? Wish i could do something like this but when you live in an apt have to consider neighbours when it comes to noise..WOW!
I'm planning on putting up a new video for the whole home projection. But not sure what I'm going to do yet. I better hurry, running out of time...
This is so cool, amazing job 😱😱
Thank you!
AeroVideo You're welcome
Awesome job! Love how the doors open and close. What kind of speaker set up did you use? Sounds nice and loud
It was just one of those old portable tape deck with removable speakers, nothing fancy but good and loud :) Key feature was that it had inputs to receive audio from the movie playing on the projector.
Wow. Disney, you see this?!
Hah I wish!
I love the hous
This is incredible. What I would like to see is some of these projections to be more realistic looking instead of cartoon-like. What you've done is amazing, but it would be even more so if the projections were life like. I have been thinking about doing some projections in a window, and from what I can tell ppl put the holographic material right up to the window and project like that, but I was thinking if you could build the screen a couple of feet back it would give it some depth, and look like it was actually happening in the room. Is that possible?
Thanks! Actually this year we didn't do any window projections, this was a whole home projection. But I agree, window projections work best if they are a few feet away from the window and you can see inside. If you look at our 2016 and 2015 videos we do that with the living room window at the end of the video. It's pretty cool looking and more realistic hologram effect if it's not up against the window. But this year we projected everything on the whole house so I could animate everything and it was an interesting effect. Upstairs windows where you can't see inside aren't as effective thus we have shadow figure animations in those.
PAUL I love your work we are in Australia and get about 1k trick or treaters every year that is big for AU as Halloween is only now starting to grow. How much would you charge to make one for our home I use 4 projectors currently to do windows but would love to see if it can be done on our home.
Bendigo Mac Thank you very much! It was fun to do. Unfortunately, I barely have the time to do this to our own house. I believe the guy who does the tutorial might do these for people, check the description. Good luck, it is a lot of fun and the kids love it :)
Really looks great. How did you weather proof the projector?
I didn't weather proof. I only set it up on halloween which ended up being good weather. That's on the to do list.
Amazing.................
Thank you!
The Point is to Scare off the Kids so there is more Treats for you and your wife.
I like your thinking!
Awesome job! How much do you think it cost you to get everything needed for something like this?
Besides my time learning/researching the projector itself I think was around $600, probably way cheaper now. Spent quite a bit on the atomosFX over the years doing the window projections so I had a pretty good library of their animations to work with. Maybe $200 worth. An old portable stereo, $150. And 3 $50 LED projectors from Amazon. All told maybe $1,000-$1,100 but have been building up the gear over the years so it wasn't all at once. The big buy for me was the bright short throw main projector at $600. Hope that helps, sorry for the rambling :)
Interesting how this video shows how the projector slows down showing the actual house and the video is what makes the house lighter or darker with over exposure.
Yeah I had my camera set to auto ISO which compensated for the exposure when the house went dark. Kind of ruined the effect. This year I used a fixed exposure so that doesn't happen. Even though your eyes are auto exposure, so to speak, they don't react as fast as my camera did. So I think this year the fixed exposure looks more like it did in real life. I'll be posting my 2019 video soon.
Very impressive! How did you do the overall house projection (like with the siding and garage doors - particularly with each house being so different)? Did you do the effects or was there a customization feature?
I traced the house in Adobe Illustrator and drew all the old looking siding and two different sets of garage doors all in Adobe Illustrator. I then composited it all and animated it in after effects. All the monsters were videos I purchased from AtmosFX and composited into my main house animation via After Effects. I hope that helps! Thank you.
@@helidaho awesome video man!!! How did you do the lightning effect? Was it through AE?? Was it also super hard to make the siding in illustrator? Thanks man!!!
Nice work! Any word of advice for a newbie attempting this?
Yes, here's an awesome youtube tutorial I used to learn how to do it last year: ruclips.net/video/KKsKwHbuu3M/видео.html
What type of projector is this? This seems so much brighter then my 3500 lumens one I use.
The projector I used was a short throw Optoma GT760A 720p projector. It is 3200 lumens but the resolution is only 720p. I shot this pretty late in the evening. So it appears a lot brighter. Early visitors didn't get to see much.
Is this a special kind of projector or would any projector work as well?
Is the glitching supposed to happen? Serious question, cant tell if its programed that way or a glitch in the in the projection system. Either way, excelent graphics. Good job.
Yeah the glitching is on purpose. It looked cool on the computer when I was editing it all together but in practice it almost looks like a mistake. I agree. Thanks, glad you liked anyway!
That was amazing . I liked your original content mapping with the AtmosFX videos . This must have taken so much time to edit , animate and render but the results are theme park quality . How long would you guess it took you to do the whole process .
Thank you! I'm so glad you liked it. I have a bunch of the AtmosFX videos from years past doing window projections so it helped that I had a pretty good library already to choose from. I think it took me one evening to trace out my house, another to illustrate all my custom stuff then probably a solid weekend to edit it all together so I guess 2 full days plus 2 evenings. I was fortunate as this kind of decorating is right up my alley :)
I want a Halloween projector like this
It is a lot of fun to do.
I won’t ask how you did this or that because I am familiar with the process. I do see the atmosfx videos as well. But where did you get the still art of the broken planks on the house? Or did you just have that company in the how too video put that together for you?
I made the graphics of the planks on our house and the garage doors in adobe illustrator. I have some graphics and video editing background.
Increible
Thanks!
This is awesome...I'm trying to o the same thing, but I can't find a "gate image" like you have on the garage. Where did you get that from??
DB Hello DB, the old looking siding, garage doors and the metal garage gates were all drawn in Adobe Illustrator by me. I’m fortunate enough to have a graphics background.
@@helidaho Thanks...I'm also a graphic designer, I actually created a gate today, was just looking for a shortcut lol. Your file size for this had to be massive. I'm also using After effects. Is this all one composition or did you create multiple and combine them. Here's my gate - tinyurl.com/y3wkgppf
@@lightsonwhalerscove great job on the gate, that looks fantastic! I don’t think the file sizes were too bad, if I recall it all fit on a 16GB sd card.
Okay Ill admit it, I've been obsessing over this cause it is awesomeness to the nth degree. Now I have to do it, can you tell me what software you used?
I used Adobe Illustrator to trace out the house and make the old looking siding and garage doors. I assembled all the animations and videos in Adobe After Effects. But you could use just about any computer drawing software and video editing software. I just happen to use Adobe products in my day job so I'm familiar with them. Check out the link to the tutorial in the description, that's how I learned about the process. Really good info.
@@helidaho thank you very much! I'm on it.
Can you please give information about the eyeball link? Or the ghost skeleton link. I have a simple one screen protection I would like to use for Halloween.
Sorry for the slow reply... atmosfx is where I got all the creatures and monsters.
What version of Adobe did you use? Did you subscribe to the creative cloud? Do you know of any good alternatives?
My day job uses the Adobe Creative Cloud suite so I do have a subscription. That's really all I know, sorry not much help on alternatives :(. You could probably do a lot with iMovie/FinalCutPro ?
Your work is incredible and inspirational to say the least. Yours are the best overall displays I have found on RUclips! I believe the multiple projectors, outside and inside really take your production to the next level. I am inspired to attempt this with our place. Do you feel 3200 lumens and 720p is enough or would you recommend more of either knowing what you know now and making a recommendation for a first attempt? How late in the evening does it need to be to see it at its best? When trick or treaters walk to the door do they pass though the projection path and if so is it that big of a deal? Where and how do you mount your projector? Do you use an FM transmitter or just stereo and do the neighbors complain about it? When do start running your production i.e. begging of October and what time of day does it start and end? Why did you did you disable the comments on your latest video. Thanks in advance for your assistance. VERY impressive production!
Sorry for the late reply. Thanks so much for the compliments, very much appreciated. I would like to get a brighter 4K projector but that’s too expensive right now. Once you get close up to the house it’s pretty pixelated so higher resolution would be nice. The brightness is okay but really works best once the sun goes down. The kids do walk through the path of the projector but that doesn’t seem to bother anyone in fact they kinda like seeing their shadows. I mount my projector on a really sturdy camera tripod. I would like to figure something more permanent so I can leave it up longer and do other holidays but so far I just set it up on Halloween so I can see the weather and lessen the theft chances. The audio is run through an old boom box so it’s good and loud. I have great neighbors :)
@@helidaho Thanks for the info. I appreciate it. Looking into short throw projectors with a high ansi lumen output. Still out of my price range at the moment. This year was discouraging and we made the decision to Go Dark. Am planning for next year and hoping the COVID issues will be a thing of the past by then. We will see. Thanks again and hope you and yours are doing well.
@@knowyourjoe8826 I agree, this has been a rough year, we also made the decision to go dark. Here’s hoping next Halloween we can make up for it!
Yes please, what projectors and how did you collage the different atmos fx scenes . I d like as much information as possible
The projector I used was a short throw Optoma GT760A 720p projector. It is 3200 lumens but the resolution is only 720p. I used Adobe Illustrator to make a drawing of our house and make it look old. Plus I drew separate garage doors and gates so I could open and close them. I put it all together in Adobe After Effects, the drawing of the house is on top and the AtmosFX animations were placed in windows and garage doors. I used two more el-cheapo LED projectors one on the front porch with the hands pushing on the walls and the other in our living room showing the haunted photographs. I hope this helps answer your questions. Let me know if you have any more.
Wow. Incredible work
Thanks!
This is just mad!!! So cool!! Where did you get all this projectors?? I've never seen something like that before
It's really one good one for the whole front of the house and the others 3 others are cheap $50ish LED projectors from Amazon. Glad you liked it!
Are they shooting from the inside or outside?
@@Dmitry17041988 The main projector that does the front of the house is shooting from the outside as well as the porch projector and the side projector. The pictures in the living room had a projector inside out of view. We used to do the window projections from inside if you look at our old videos but this is a new thing we've tried and it works quite well once it gets dark :)
Looks AMAZING. What are you using for projectors?
Thanks! The main projector for the front of the house is a short throw Optoma GT760A 720p projector. It is 3200 lumens but the resolution is only 720p. The projection on the side, porch and inside were all little LED cheapo projectors. Hope that helps!
How do you know someone won't steal your projector if its outside?
I don’t although I made it so I would probably notice. I had a lock on the tripod and it was wedged into a mugo pine. So while I guess someone could steal it, it wouldn’t be easy. Also I only set it up on Halloween.
What projector did you use and were was the placement of it? Looks great!
Thanks, glad you liked it, I really appreciate it. The projector I used on the front of the house for the main projection is a short throw Optoma GT760A 720p. It's 3200 lumens. I had it placed out at the left side of the driveway in some shrubs to hide it. It was on a camera tripod so I could get the positioning just right. Effectively it was about in the middle of our house. At the beginning of the video you see me walk down the sidewalk and then the house is obscured by a big Mugo Pine Shrub, it was in that. Hope that helps.
@@helidaho which tripod did you use?? I'm surprised it can hold the projector!
Anne Grace B A big beefy carbon fiber pro master tripod, very sturdy.
@@helidaho Ok, perfect. Thank you, Paul!
Hello awesome for the front projection did you do a 3d mapping of the house before hand and if so did atmosfx costume the video to fit the house ?
I did trace out the house in Adobe illustrator so I would have a basis for After effects and adding all the videos. All the creatures and monsters from AtomosFX were just purchased and I added them in After effects to my main animation. With the house tracing I was able to make it look old and add the AtmosFX videos where I needed in After Effects. I hope that helps. Thanks!
AeroVideo so in essence you had to trace your siding to turn them old looking ? New to mapping hehehhe
@@TheMeli81 Kind of. I traced the basic shapes of the house and drew in my own siding and tried to angle as needed to keep the perspective. Kind of hard to explain. Check out the ProjectThisHouse youtube account, I believe he's got a video on how to trace your house. Extremely helpful.
TheMeli81 There is a good tutorial for mapping your home by Matt Champneys as well. It’s really important HOW you map your house, and he explains it pretty well in his first mapping tut. ruclips.net/video/KKsKwHbuu3M/видео.html
@@spit53 Yes, thank you that's exactly the tutorial I used to learn how to set this all up. I've put the link in the description.
Where did you get the indoor haunted photographs?
AtmosFX, although I don’t recall which package it was in.
i have to step up my game.. sucks that kids come at like 530 pm now lol not even dark until 730. They miss out
Yeah I tell the early kids to come back when it's dark. They need to change daylight savings time to before Halloween :) so my decorations look better!
This is great. Did you do the projection video yourself or hire it out?
James Behling I did it myself, I have a background in graphics, animation and video editing.
@@helidaho Well...if you are ever in Minnesota and want a project....I WANT YOUR SETUP!!! That is fantastic!!!!!! Love the garage!
Where did you get the video playing on your projectors or you can make your own
The monsters, ghosts and stuff were all from atmosFX. They have a huge library of videos to work with. The house, garage doors were drawn/animated by me.
What programs you use
@@abgarza911 I used Adobe Illustrator to trace out the shapes of my house for a template. I also used it to do draw all the old looking siding, garage doors, and garage cage doors. I used Adobe After Effects to animated the garage doors and composite all the atomsFX monster videos where I needed them. Hope that helps!
How expensive is all this holy moly :D You americans are on whole another level :D
Yeah we did go all out last year:) The main projector itself I think was around $600, probably way cheaper now. This needs a “how to” video, with a components list. Incredible job. Looks amazing!
@@kenmcevoy1119 I do wish I had put together a bit of a how-to video of setting this up, that's a good idea. But I did put a link to the how-to video I watched to learn all this. It's in the video description, as well as the brand/model of projector I used. I hope that helps. :)
Super cool. I wanted to try and do this to my house this year, but didn’t get time to learn. Is it pretty tough to do, or is it something someone can pick up pretty easy?
Thanks, glad you liked it! I would say difficulty is pretty dependent on your computer skills. I'm a nerd and happen to be pretty familiar with drawing, animation and video editing software so it only took me a couple of days to make. But without that background I could see it being a frustrating experience. One thing to note, it's a lot easier to setup and take down once the final video is made. Don't have to mess with a ton of props only the projector :)
AeroVideo thank you for the reply. I’m computer savvy, but never attempted anything like this. Thank you again.
Kevin Davis It should be relatively easy for you. In the description I thank a RUclips channel that has a pretty good demonstration on how to pull this off. It’s easier than you might first think.
Hi there. How did you overlay the blood effects on top of other elements in the video? I'm trying the effect myself but can't figure it out. Thanks!
All the Atmos FX were layered in with After Effects. I believe the blood effects I had to use a blending mode to get rid of the white background. I hope that helps.
How do u protect the projectors from being stolen?
I don't really. I did use a bike lock on my main projector and the tripod but that's about it. I only put it up for Halloween night. That and weatherproofing I would like to figure out so I can have it up more often and for longer.
@@helidaho oh ok, I think that would have to be my main worry since I've seen people take just about anything unfortunately
Do I get like noise complaints????
Not yet. We have it pretty loud but not super loud.
Great work. Would you be able to guide me on how I can start this on my house and what I'll need.
Yes actually, I put a link in the video description to the tutorial that helped me get going. It's very detailed and I believe he even sells complete hardware setups.

One main short throw projector for the front of the house and 3 cheap $50 LED projectors for the side, porch and living room.

AMAZING!!! Im DEFINITELY doing this next halloween! Quick question, how many speakers did you use for this set up? And where did you set up the speakers? Are they all next to the projector or are they scattered around? Any specific speaker set up you recommend? Thanks in advance!
I had an old portable stereo "boom box" hooked up right next to my main projector outside. The other projectors just used the internal speakers which worked surprisingly well.
that's a lot going on
It is a little busy...
Incredible effects but glamorizing the worst possible scenarios isn't what Halloween is about.
Yeah some of the younger kids found it too scary. But I’ve always liked scary for Halloween :)
Its definitely scary. The screaming is a bit much for someone who's heard it in real life. Other than that...Rite on! 🧟♀️☠
