- The teeter totter was fun, but there's always a way to make something better. In this video, we attempt to build a mountain bike jump that requires launching off the end of the teeter. We're calling it the Teeter Cannon, and it's going to challenge people! It's not every day you ride your mountain bike up to a moving lip. Enjoy this one.

Improvement Idea: I noticed the teeter totter had a significant amount of flexure across it's length after Seth hits it. As a mechanical engineer my first thought was that the repeated flexing will eventually cause the wood fibers to separate and lead to a pretty epic crack in the support beams. That said, of this were my build, I would reinforce the center or pivoting section of the teeter. Easiest way to do this would be to make some 2' to 3' lengths of the supporting beam and drill the same hole through them, then mount them on the inside of each support beam. This will help keep the teeter working for a long time to come as it gets repeatedly sent by riders. Hope this is useful, cheers.

What I really noticed was the Notch at the end for the Teeter to "Hit Flat" heavily compromised that portion of the feature. I forecast it will break from the constant abuse of smashing on the landing especially with a near 90 degree cut instead of rounding out the cut after it was made to spread the load. Im Just a chemical engineer, but my limited knowledge in Mechanics of Materials at least aids in understanding concepts...
As a non-mechanical engineer, I can tell you that you don't need to be a mechanical engineer to know this.

How about a line that goes up a tree to a platform then wraps around and comes down like a cork screw?
hanging a chain under the "entry" side would slow down the ramp on the assent but bring it back quicker. and its progressive load, the higher it goes the heavier, lower it gets lighter. if its needed, seems to work well now.
Depending on the weight of the chain though, I feel like it could slightly enhance the sketch factor of the feature (I'll leave it up to seth to decide whether that's a good or a bad thing) due to the teeter not going down as fast. I feel like it could be more predictable now where you're gonna know that the planks basically don't support your weight when you're on the second half and it looked like seth almost bunnyhopped or took weight off of the teeter at the middle, whereas when it supports a bit more weight it might feel weird to stay on and it might feel weird to "jump" early and then realize that the teeter isn't really going down and out of your way that quick.
Complete shot in the dark though, just my thoughts.

Nah that makes it way easier. Its way more difficult to jump of something moving fast than slow. He finally built a difficult thing. Don't dumb it down by making it slower.

We have a teeter-totter on one of the trails I ride and it has an old car tire for it to crash down on. It's a lot less impact for the teeter-totter and the rider.
Same with ours, makes the transition so smooth
You might want to zip tie some pillows to the tree right in front of the landing just in case.

Hey, when I used to build any wooden features back when I was living in Asheville, I learned to mix silica sand with just some standard deck seal. I forget the amount exactly. I want to say I added like... maybe enough silica sand to fill the paint bucket maybe 1/4 of the way. It's more than you think you should add.
Since it's damp fairly often in Asheville, it'll give you a bit more safety in those spaces where to wood is slick -- especially those wooden berms you built.
It's also just a good idea for anyone building a deck in a damp climate. Get some silica, like 40-70 mesh, fairly large grain if you can find it.
Great idea. Creates texture and grip like truck bed liner!

That's the thing with building stuff. You can do all the physics and calculations, but the best way is to just build it and make some adjustments.

You should put strips of rubber where the teeter hits the deck for smoother transition if you decide not the jump it
Or Take a couple adjustable bike shocks and make a custom dampener so when the teeter hits the deck it doesn't bounce back up a few inches. Think of the front of the teeter like the front forks landing a jump.

I don't own a mountain bike, I only have road bikes, but regardless I'm always going to be a huge fan of this channel, I love that Seth builds really cool stuff for the his trail system, hands down this is the coolest MTB channel on RUclips.

How about putting some rubber bands on the "entry" side of the teeter. This will to some extend hold the "exit" side up. You could modulate this effect by the number of rubber bands and the speed you enter the teeter ;-)
Was thinking similar except I’d use sand bags on the underside of the entry ramp.
Yup, thought in a similar fashion. Some kind of counter balance at the start of it, and you may be able to train it somewhat better too. That tire mentioned in another comment could be under the start too dampen it
D good idea but you’d have to use a little amount of sand. This is why I think the rubber bands are a better idea but maybe l less reslistic

I’ve been following the channel for years now and I noticed:
MAN this was good! Not that the older videos were bad in any way - I still love them. But things like the time lapse with the camera slowly moving, super likable Seth (especially at the end), nice shot of Oscar scurrying around the feature... I love this channel.
Seth’s videos has actually inspired me to start making my own backyard trail.

Maybe put in elastic bands on the front of the teeter. So it gets reset quicker and the teeter doesn't float away under you. plus it would add a level of difficulty on the "normal" way of hitting it becaus of the delayed teeter.

A couple of bungee cords that could be removed or even moved until it's just right to jump, but if someone wants to roll it they can be taken off for less resistance

When I first saw the title, I thought it would be way crazier. My initial thought of "cannon" was that you'd just secure the start so it didn't move at all and it'd just be a huge jump. Could still do that but setting in some planks on each side with notches and a small, stiff bar to go into one of the gaps between the planks.

Maby you can put something like rubber pads on the Wood of the teder topper, so it doesn't damage the Wood and with a softer landing when your on it?
I was thinking sheet metal on the landing too- seth, you should add a plank on the bottom of the teeter totter to distribute the weight as well
If/when you build a bypass for this: maybe two or three big dirt rollers, mounds you can carry speed over but not necessarily jumps?
he doesnt need a bypass for it anymore because he built this jump, so you can still keep your speed down berm peak

Thank u for the great video. I live in ca, the state that is always on fire. The air quality is absolutely terrible here, which means no exercise outside, or really anything outside without a chunky filter mask on. So I’ve just been staying inside. Thanks for keeping me in touch for what mountain biking feels like.

Hey Seth, as someone who loves your channel but is not about to ride ANY of the stuff that you build, I Love this feature. I see it as something that gives the rider the option of going full on to take the leap, or use it as a teeter totter (safer option?) to use it for the added momentum down the ramp (sorry, not right up on the terminology).
Really great progression of a feature!

you could put a sign below it on the approach side that has an arrow pointing at the alternative route. So that when somebody just used it, it will show you where to go
What a cool feature! You can go slow and it'll handle it and you can gradually build up speed to send it as much as you want! Nice work man.
I'd suggest adding some sort of tension to that seesaw, probably a spring in some way that holds it back just a bit when smacking into the ground.

Love what you have built. I built similar years ago, teeter topper came down onto an off ramp, gave you the option to launch or roll down for those who didn’t feel comfortable riding it. We also had one built in our local woods that got ripped down by the foresters after someone fell off it and tried to claim against them. I also built a portable teeter topper for the kids to use and when I was coaching other riders, plus you can always roll it out when having BBQ’s and got your mates round

Weight down the approach side of the teter with some cross 2x8s to increase height and give a more solid base for the return bounce. Gotta think about your buddy behind you!!
You can adjust the "stiffness" of the teeter by adding an old inner-tube (1990's technology!) to the lowest part, so the teeter doesn't drop that fast when you want to use it as a cannon.
