As an instructor I always taught kids "make a fist, save your wrist" if you drive a fist into the snow your wrist is mostly locked and immobilized and much harder to fracture
Lollll I'm a beginner snowboarder and I recently fell (more like flew down) forward, somehow made a fist automatically, which I landed with it on my sternum. My wrists were fine but I couldn't breathe for good solid half a minute 😂
my instructor taught me and now i teach my friends “fists save wrists” although i myself have a very bad habit of rubbing my palms across the mt anytime i’m able
What if its an ice day and the ground is ice
That's funny cause I'm a Marine and one thing we're taught is if you're falling forward, to tuck your chin, punch the ground and roll forward on that shoulder. It's called a combat roll.
I'm 68 yo and have been boarding for 23 years and always wear a helmet. It has saved my head a number of times. A few years ago I gave my college age daughter this advice about grabbing your chest and letting your body take the fall and she still broke her wrist. I should have bought her wrist guards. The natural reaction to break your fall is hard to overcome for some. But I can't wait to forward this video to her!
Sometimes its better to break your wrist than to break something else. I have a story about this
Im a mountain biker I hit a jump and in the air I hit a tree. My bars twisted and my bike stopped and I was send over the bars down the landing of the jump. I was falling side first and I stuck my arm out instinctively. I hit my arm, elbow and shoulder really hard. It took a few minutes for me to move and part of my right arm because all the muscles tensed up. But if my arm elbow and shoulder hadnt absorbed a lot of the hit I could have broken my collar bone which is an ass to heal or by ribs or tore something in my shoulder or slammed my head into the ground and gotten a concussion. My friends that I was riding with said I got really lucky that I wasnt hurt worse because of how hard I fell. Sometimes its better to break a bone that can heal than to get a concussion that messes with your brain when your older or a torn ligament or tendon that cant heal.
In my opinion. Falling putting your elbows out works very well to absorb impact and then your body as a secondary impact if a hard fall. I would say avoid putting your arms out at all costs as I've seen quite a few broken arms and wrists, I myself have torn my rotator cuff, learned a good lesson that day.
@@Sourwhatup Putting your elbows our could break your collarbone
I'm still pretty new to snowboarding (even though I'm learning very fast and I think I'm decent) I really need to work on not trying to catch myself
Last year while learning to snowboard I took a hit to the helmet so bad it got me a concussion that lasted me the entire trip.
Safe to say I'd have died if I didn't have it on...
I caught an edge cause some people were standing in the middle of the slope after a turn and forced me to try to transition from heels to toes: Transitioned kinda nice, was going backwards at like 30-40kmh caught the edge and plummeted to the ground. My head hit the snow so fkin hard. Thankfully I had a friend with me who made me company before I recovered myself (10-15 minutes)
Ten days ahead, do squats every day for seven days. Then, rest for three days before hitting the slopes.
Thank me later.
I did this like a month out, 100 calf raises and 100 squats every other day and its was the best decision of my life.
@@charliebackus8386 Keep it going!
It's a great way to start your day!
For a month I did calf raises in the morning and squats in the evening when brushing my teeth. 4 hours into my first day back on the slopes and my right quad was burning. What a waste of a month! 😅
@@L_M_C Well, the problem is you didn't do any burpees
And, calf - raises come after the squats.
!
@@L_M_Calso need to stretch regularly
As a person who started snowboarding at the age of 15 and now 42, I can tell you falling while ridding is an art form
I’m 15 and tmr is my first day snowboarding. I’m so scared I’ll just suck but also rlly excited. It’s just intimidating to be surrounded by everyone else who already know how to ski or snowboard 😅. I learned how to fall from skateboarding and basketball however now bc my feet r gonna be strapped in we will see how things turn out. Wish me luck lol
@@tamakiamajiki675 get protection shorts. Thank me later)
@@tamakiamajiki675 how did it go?
I'm 15 and had my first snowboard lesson today!
@@TheDogFamily542 It went amazing!!! I spent 2 full days with a teacher and one full day on the slopes with my dad. I had a few wipe outs but at the end my teacher taught me how to Ollie which is so cool. 10/10 I loved it
The first 3 days are painful..... yea when I only get to do it 3 days out of the year.... legs are on fire for those 3 days.
If your legs are on fire, you're not doing it right. I would guess you are spending a good portion of the time heel sliding. Once you learn to point the board straight and carve, or even slide turn down the hill, your legs will feel much better at the end of the day.
@@Raiders1234 If YOUR legs aren't on fire, you're not riding hard enough
Lmao same
Wearing an helmet probably saved my life. It literally shattered at the back of the head
Same. I got a concussion skiing years ago with a helmet on. With no helmet... I'd prob be brain dead or dead dead
Same but it was when i fell off my bike when i was younger and it was the front that broke, scary cause a lot of times I didn't wear it
I’ve been snowboarding for 5 years now. I would never go riding without a helmet, wrist guards and knee pads. This set gives you safety and comfort. I’m amazed that people are not doing it. It’s not always you and your skills, sometimes it’s a lack of other’s skills.
why knee pads? Seems entirely unnecessary
@@Ghostyfrost9688I think cause usually you fall forward onto your knees when doing toe edge turns which for beginners are way harder
I went snowboarding with a girl who broke her tailbone on the first day ever, even with the instructor. Morale: do wear protective shorts AND go on super-mellow slope first AND dont rush, even if you feel like everyone "got it" and you dont. Stay safe and have fun!
Ouch!
That's rare, women have very durable butts compared to men. Plus they usually have a front falling problem. Not a back falling problem.
@@dootdoot1867 maybe she was flat on both sides
@@dogeofamp6037 lol. No it is their bone structure of their hips. They can take impact better. Men have glass hips. Strong but terrible with impact.
I think it’s funny you say don’t rush it because I went snowboarding for the first time last week and half way through the day I was going down the hardest slopes there was at the park and I was hitting the jumps and tryn wild stuff because it seemed like no mater how I fell I landed back on my feet definitely sore butt and shoulders but surprisingly didn’t die.🎉
As someone who went once at the end of last season and is now hooked, my ass never hurt so bad. Also, coming from a motorcycles, helmet is a no brainer
Here’s a good tip. After snowboarding always hop in the hot bath / hot tub. The hot water will relax your muscles and you’ll have little to no soreness
If you want to avoid the leg soreness, dont stay on one edge. staying on one edge is a pretty big thing beginners do, but it really works out your muscles vs learning to make turns even if they arent the best
I was taught to catch myself on the elbows and knees. They dig into the snow and are not hurt too much. Never catch yourself with hands.
I don't recommend catching yourself with your elbows, the shock can travel up to your shoulders and do serious damage. Instead use the sides of your arms, your knees, and your back.
I played contact sports for years before starting skiing/boarding and I’ve never gotten hurt falling before, they teach you how to fall in rugby and football, its a surprisingly useful skill for an adrenaline addict, knowing which way of landing will hurt you least and not panicking when you fuck up
I learned how to fall early in life too thanks to sports. It’s saved me from serious injuries so many times!
Hurt my tailbone super bad today... worst pain ever!! Can't sit lol. Now I know to get a butt pad! I thought snow was soft!! 😂
Tip: when u fall straighten your body flat. That will reduce the pain from the tailbone.
I’m 58 now… 1st time was 6 hours of 20ft….slam, frontside…. 20 Ft…. Slam backside…. 3rd trip, carving at speed, baby air…. Couldn’t afford lessons but was determined to get it!!!🤘🤙
broke my wrist the other day doing what i shouldn’t have done😂
I did that mistake yesterday where I sticked out my hand to soften the blow but I almost broke my wrist. Thank god I’m okay.
glad you're ok 🙏
Hehehe I do BJJ and judo and I’m trying snowboarding for the first time ever I hope my lessons have taught me well
Growing up I remember my friend breaking both his arms 😂 Poor dude couldn't wipe.
Can't wait for the winter to come 😀
Broke my wrist first time snowboarding, learned to tuck the arms in as shown, but have cracked ribs doing that as your elbows can dig into your ribs on catching a toe edge.
Learning hurts, but it’s soooooo worth it
Teach your students to fall on knees and forearms when falling forward. When falling backwards pick a cheek and land on broadside of arm.
I hadn't learned to brake yet in snow boarding and I decided to go real fast. 2 people suddenly appeared in front of me after I crested a small hill and I tried to brake (I failed) and I did a front flip and landed on my head right between them. I definitely agree on the helmet thing.
helmet and hip and tailbone padded shorts. i love the padded shorts, best purchase ever
Literally sprained my wrist on the first day. As a beginner, i wish i saw this video before going on the slope.
Snowboarding for the first time tomorrow so very helpful
The best way to watch how to fall in Snowboarding is to watch how skateboarders can fall on pavement all day and keep riding.
I did snowboarding today and I was a pro probably bc I watch u all the time😊
I embrace the pain as a reminder to not mess up
If you get good on rip stick snow boarding comes pretty easy. I actually could already do it I just needed to learn basics like skating to the lift and how to operate at very slow speeds around people at the top. I was helicoptering in like 20 minutes. My instructor was losing his mind haha. But yeah fall gracefully.
Gonna save up for some gear and hopefully pick up snowboarding next season, thank for these helpful tips!
Thank you, I am going to try my first time this year. ❤🇨🇦
Me who broke my wrist on my second day snowboarding 😐 Man's got a point
I did the exact same thing😂
I’m going snowboarding for the first time soon these are good tips especially the tuck in your wrist ones
Remember to roll the front shoulder so you dont scorpion when falling
I’m sorry but can you explain that to me like I’m 4 because I’m a little slow 😅 anyways I hope this past year has been good to you!
One more tip, don't land on your elbows, you will tear up your shoulder ligaments or rotator cuffs.
In my opinion when falling I just go limp and that makes it hurt so much less rather than tensing up and trying to catch myself which actually will hurt more.
That why I recommend if it’s your firm time you should try to go more than one day in a row
As a guy with skinnier wrists than most girls, I can safely say wrists guards have saved me from further injury. Ruined my wrists in the first week and still can't snowboard without wrist guards (few months on).
After my injury, I decided to keep my fists clenched. Wrist buckled when getting up so didn't help me much either! Basically, I have to wear guards 24.7 when boarding now
Tailbone protection is a MUST
on my first day i didnt have any. my tailbone hurt to sit on for months
It’s so true tho. Every time I feel myself falling i immediately tuck my arms into my chest and that causes me to fall pretty gracefully with my shoulder/back taking most of the impact.
Back from first week snowboarding with a wrist sprain. Luckily I'm still a male, but that fall advice is gold.
me too man. mild sprain wrist still kinda weak 3 days later but should be ok even if it is broken
Great tips thanks Ed
I’m a young male and I broke my wrist the first day out so good stuff
I tuked my arm in one day, I broke it. I think its a mix of catching yourself and roll out of the crash, overall great video 👍🏼
broke my wrist that exact way yesterday
ouch! heal up fast 🙏
thank you for the wrist tips!
The amount of times I've fallen on my wrists between skateboarding and snowboarding... hurts to think about
Soooooo glad the place I went to required wearing these things. I can’t even say how much I banged my head, elbows, knees, or twisted my ankles or wrists 😅
Wear your helmet if you hit your head OR if someone hits YOU! Happen to me on my first day.
Yeah it does , went snowboarding for the first time and my body was
aching for three days lol
Hmmm maybe that’s why I had a head ache yesterday I did not wear my helmet
I have no problems snowboarding, however, I oftentimes have to pause in the middle of a run due to quad fatigue. I've seen good snowboarders connect smaller turns of maybe 10 degrees frequently switching from heel to toe effectively riding straight, presumably to avoid prolonging a wide turn across the slope which will blast your quads on the heel side especially. I can do this myself but it doesn't resolve the issue for me.
Another quick question ... how do you go about increasing speed while avoiding catching an edge? I've heard some say that riding flat based will get you going faster but as far as I know you're technically always on an edge even if the pressure is slight, and imo doesn't sound like a great idea on steeper terrain to just send it flat unless you're looking to wipe out.
At night when I go to bed my legs feel like there doing the motions
Ive been snowboarding for 4 years and still hit my head so wear a helmet regardless of being a beginner or advanced
Helmet is just better in every way. A place for the goggles, warmer, and cooler at the same time with adjustable openings.
@@MarkkuS true
If you prepare yourself for serious riding you should go to the gym prior. Jack up the incline to max on the treadmill and Elliptical resistance. Leg press, extension, curl and lunges. Do some core workout and arms least. If you can do neck exercises it will greatly improve your chances for survival on extreme fallls.
Fists and guard your face and embrace the fall basically is the jist of it
I’m 12 been snowboarding for 5 years and fractured my wrist twice this year
My dad always taught me when we went duck hunting and had it walk through water “fall to ur knees not your hands”
idk how but when i fall i roll and stand up instantly and just continue riding
No kidding… i should have watched this before snowboarding!!!
My dad sent me down a steep on my first day and I bell flopped so bad I had to walk the rest back down😭
As someone who was sitting to much my first day after snowboarding, i couldn't move .y hips at all, my core was sooo weak at the start.
I had A really bad fall the first time I snowboarded. I hit my hip/lower back after catching the boards edge on the slope. The fall crushed/partially fractured some cartilage in my left hip/lower back area. So catching with my body didnt work for me 😅
I was going fast and the catch flipped me over atleast once in the air before I hit the ground
For me it continued for about 2 years 🤭, broke my wrist on the first try. But persevered…
That’s the thing I did wrong on the first day and my wrists compressed
I was told fists but i do drive elbows and knees into the snow
so like i have little experience snowboarding but by day 3 (after an hour of lessons the first day) i was going down easy blue trails. The only problem i had was trying to S turn since toe turns are really awkward. Hopefully i can go somewhere soon n try some more
Yeah im planning to learn snowboarding but i think i have an advatage when it comes to falling cause i have skiied for like 11 years.
for sure, skiing experience helps a lot
For young females prone to wrist fractures, they can solve this by identifying as male before they go snowboarding
Maybe they can get a Budweiser sponsor 🍺
I almost died my first day and that will be the last time I snowboard too.
Just throwing in on the "wear a helmet" message. I've skateboarded for about 15 years, never wore a helmet, but even I ain't dumb enough to get into snowboarding without a helmet lol. You might think it's dumb but at least its warm and the first time you catch your heel edge going fast...you realize how useful helmets are.
First thing one should learn, is not how to ride, but how to fall.
I'm 14 and I kinda wanna learn snowboarding, so veteran snowboarders, any good tips for someone who hasn't even set foot on a snowboard?
Buy butt pads and knee pads for sure. They are not only gonna save you from pains from every fall, but also when you are resting. We are always resting on either butts or knees.
yea first day out there, i fell, put my hands out, and broke my wrist
Snowboarding tmr for the first time and i had a broken wrist doesnt effect me but cant bend like a normal wrist imma hope i remember to land on my forearm
When i was learning to snowboard i fell backwards Hill down behind me and i fell on my wrist and it hurt so bad i couldnt hold anything for about 2 and a half weeks, also my had hurt for a day rly badly bcs i forgot to strap in my helmet
I watched this a day too late😭😭 I’m so damn sore😭
On my first day of snowboarding I am already a pro
Just today I was doing a sharp turn and I spun out and fell and hit the back a me head
First time today and let me tell you that everything hurts especially my knees and tailbone. Ibuprofen will be my friend for next few days
Congrats on your first day!
@@ShredSchool1 Thank you! It was a lot of fun and a lot of lessons learned
I broke my arm because of wrist guards lol.
the falls are brutal...
I have a wrist that forever pops now when I move it a certain way and I have some “phantom” pain I don’t really know how to describe it but it feels like pressure but it doesn’t hurt unless I’m lifting extremely heavy weight at the gym or curling with bad form
Tucked in my arms and accidentally elbowed my stomach causing myself to be winded and out of breath for almost a minute. Probably the scariest time of my life trying to gasp for air you can’t get
Legit just had the same thing happen to me on a power day a few days ago. Luckily I've winded myself enough to not panic but still just depressing sitting there while people are asking if you're good and you got no air to even speak with, just a sad totally non-believable thumbs up lmao.
@@TheRealSquirre1 hey I’m glad you’re okay, ever since that incident I’ve been more careful on how I fall instead of just rag dolling myself, super scary stuff
Id also say protect your elbows and knees
Hey! That's me!
My first time, i caught an edge, then i did like a frontflip onto my head, 💀 (yes i was wearing a helmet
Learning to fall is the best thing you can learn on a snowboard!
my tailbone hurt for months
Just do what I do an fall on your face helps a lot with learning how to land tricks
I thought you were going to tell me how to not get so sore in the first three days
Heh, he said pain. Started snowboarding at age 45. 😂 yeah, just a bit. So worth tho!
Imo breaking a collarbone is the most common
I was speaking about actual statistics, not opinions, but collar bone is definitely common too!
Is that Christian Martin? I’m sure I have this guys Facebook marketing course.
Me watching as a 26 year old girl that broke their wrist snowboarding at age 11 bc I put my arms out to break the fall 😂
If I'm not mistaken the most fragile part of the body is our brain.
He was right about hurt
I tried it yesterday and I fell on my head two times it was easy but the hard part I can’t balance when i’m turning or trying to stop any tips
