      The little might might work if the boat had a deep keel. The flat bottom is probably not the best.

      @@benweatherford5362 It's purpose is to be used for backup, and it works great for that. A couple months ago I had my battery go dead 5 miles down river, this got me back in just over an hour and a half. Around 3.5 mph on average. Didn't have to paddle, or call for help. Little motor worked like a charm.

    I converted a similar motor TK 144FC to troll. Set the ignition back toward top dead center and gave the centrifugal clutch lighter springs. Fuel draw is fine, but i can cut back to 10 ounces an hour. A steer handle extension is nice. A swiffer handle.

    I recently bought one of these little motors. I like it especially since the first thing(s) I did were replace the Chinese spark plug with a known brand popular plug.....then I welded a short 1/2" steel nipple to the muffler (which sadly comes wide open exposed on the top for rain to fall into) and re-plumbed my exhaust to go out underwater! Now it's as quiet as a mouse pissing on cotton!💯👍

    • @Tom_Goss
      @Tom_Goss  2 года назад +1

      Mine ended up with carb problems, had to buy a new carb but couldn't find the exact match.. So it runs ok, but full throttle wants to shut down. I gave up and just got a Nissan 5hp 4 stroke a few days ago, twice the speed and a fraction of the noise.

  • @Racerboy535
    @Racerboy535 3 года назад

    I just grabbed one of these for a 12’ aluminum boat. A couple of good tips below for you all. There is no oil in the lower drive unit! 90wt gear oil or a multi weight is needed. Buy a spare plug because the stock ones seem to fail after a few hours. Also, do not overfill the oil. The crankcase vent will suck up excess oil into the carb causing it to smoke like a civ. I had it mounted a little off and just a tad over the top mark on the dipstick. Take the measurement with dip stick screwed all the way in. It’s a good little motor that will get you out of a pinch.

    One rule of boating I learned young no matter if you want to or not you always carry extra gas especially if you’re alone

    • @Tom_Goss
      @Tom_Goss  5 лет назад +1

      This test had nothing to do with running out of gas. It was for testing a backup outboard motor to see how it was going to work. A few trips after this video I got to find out exactly how it would work when my battery went dead and I was stuck 5 miles down river. This little outboard got me home. I have a new battery now, and I carry a jump pack with me too, but this outboard will be a permanent addition as it's proven to be worth it's weight.

    Thanks for sharing. I’m considering a backup 4 stroke motor as well and like the idea of mounting beside the cockpit within arms length of handle. Also very little room for transom mount. Was strongly considering a custom mount similar in function as you showed in your video using the 2x4. Any major concerns you might share? Was steering a deal breaker? My application is on a much larger boat but similar idea and function as you show on the side of your boat.

    • @Tom_Goss
      @Tom_Goss  3 года назад +2

      Video shows why off the side didn't work well. Out back is the best location, lock the neck down so it doesn't turn then stand and lean side to side to steer. Slow but steady. Here's a couple trips later when I actually had to use it due to a dead battery. ruclips.net/video/5lScSzZ7_O4/видео.html

      Mine also goes to half throttle and slows down and dies after that. It does push my 15 foot catamaran 6 miles an hour at half throttle, but I would like to go to Full Throttle. I'm working on it today. I see a tiny screw in the top of the throttle Barrel. It may be a needle valve adjustment. I hope to know soon. At this half throttle speed I burn about one liter a gas in 3 to 4 hours.

    Hi Tom, nice vieo, I purchased the same motor. It runs well but I wish it could be locked in position during sailing. I'm using it on a 23 sailboat so I would rather using the boat tiller to turn, as it is more confortable, but I can't find a lock option, does the motor have any lock switch I'm not aware of? Thanks

      I haven't tried it on a boat but if it's anything like my weed eaters the four-stroke has more torque and is quieter at idle and full throttle than a standard two-stroke. Another thing to note the four-stroke has more moving parts than a two-stroke. After two years I had to regap the valves on my trimmer but it's been good for more than ten years now besides a replacement primer bulb and fuel lines. If you go with the four-stroke use Non Detergent SAE 30 oil and change it every season and especially during the break-in period.
