The Hunger Games Description: Katniss Everdeen voluntarily takes her younger sister's place in the Hunger Games: a televised competition in which two teenagers from each of the twelve Districts of Panem are chosen at random to fight to the death.

The Three Finger Salute is a tradition from Katniss's homeland of District 12. In Book 1, she explains its significance, describing it as “an old and rarely used gesture of our district, occasionally seen at funerals. It means thanks, it means admiration, it means goodbye to someone you love.
I thought it came about from the rebellion and disappearance of district 13.
It became a symbol of the rebellion through Katniss over the course of the films but the quote about the origin of the symbol in District 12 that Ray posted is exactly as written in the first book.
@@morgan9774no
When Haymitch says "Embrace the probability of your imminent death And know, in your heart, that there's nothing I can do to save you" just breaks my heart. The kids from the poor side of District 12 have to sign up for grain and oil to be able to survive. They need to sign up once for each member of their family and what it does is put the name of the child in the reaping for each time they sign up. So if a child has 3 other family members, the first year , they have their names in 5 times (4 x for the food + their regular entry). The following year, they have their names in 10 times (4 times for the food x2 years + 2 'regular' times.). The third year, they have their names in 15 times (4x3 years + 3 regular times). You get the picture. This is why Gale's name is in 42 times instead of just once per year, because he has 2 brothers, a sister and his mom. That means most of the chosen tributes come from "The seam" (The really poor part of the district). They are starving, they are small, they are tired, have no energy or muscle mass. No sponsor would take them on. So for the last 23 years, Haymitch watched 46 kids die because there was nothing he could do to save them. And then, he had to go back to the district, year after year, and face the families and loved ones of those 46 fallen tributes. For the last 23 years, he has to live with the memories of having failed to save those children. I don't even live in that world and I want to drink.
When he sees that Katniss and Peeta have heart, they have spunk, they have muscle mass, he sees that maybe, just maybe, there is a chance he could bring one of them back alive... no matter how slim that chance may be. Sorry, this is one of my favorite series of all time so I tend to get overly passionate. Thank you for reacting to it
thank you for sharing, I enjoyed every word. excellent insight.
The thing about Haymitch is that he turned to alcohol because of trauma. After he won his games, he had to go on alone because the Capitol had his family and girlfriend killed. And now as the sole District 12 victor, he's doomed to mentor two kids every year for the rest of his life who, other than him, have historically always died. That's a lot of death and guilt to deal with. Haymitch is a warrior honestly to be able to shoulder all that and still be alive.
Unfortunately you miss some of these special details if you only watch the movies, awesome though they are. So if you're a reader, I can't recommend this series with enough passion. It's fantastic.
Also, it's Peeta, like pita bread. The baker's boy! ❤
Seconded! Please read these books, they bring so much more depth to the story. Also, recommended and similar Dystopian feel, see: Parable of the Sower.
Books aren't movies... please stop
@@donnieboughton1730 What is your malfunction? Some movies are adapted from books. It's not a crime to compare them and suggest that folks read the books if they also enjoyed the movie.
Honestly, get wrecked.
@@meghanmonroe nope I've watched the Harry potter movies dozens of times. Same with lotr and several other adaptations. I know there are differences from the books, and I don't care. The movies are good. The books are good. But trying to pressure people into reading the books... or complaining that each movie isn't 13 hours long to include every exact detail is childish. It's the "but, but this happened in the book, but the movie didn't show it" mentally. That's the whole reason it's called and adaption. Which means it was adapted, not directly translated... so I'm not sure what you are trying to say...
@@donnieboughton1730 Nothing about my original comment was a complaint or a criticism. In fact, I even said that I thought the movies were awesome. Again, there's a difference between bitching about the differences and mentioning some background details about a character that were left out of the movie in order to give Major a little better understanding and enrich his viewing experience.
Also, suggesting the books because they're excellent is not even in the same universe as "pressuring" them on someone.
In the book, each giant dog had facial features of each dead tribute. Imagine all of your kills coming back alive as a demon/gorilla dog!
Katniss never wanted friends or boyfriends. She lives in a world where her friends and loved ones can be taken away. She's only friends with Gail because of his hunting techniques. Peter was the first boy she ever kissed. Katniss is very standoffish. She only takes care of her mother and sister because she loves them and that's all she wants in her life. She lives in a sinister world.
Peeta*
Yes, that kiss she gave Peeta in the cave was the first time she ever kissed a boy.
@@IAmAlteringTheDeal ok, yeah 👍 Peeta. 🤭 I said Peter. 😂
Peeta keeps his enemies close and learn about them. Kat does her studying from a distance. lol
Great reaction! The books are from the point of view of Katniss, so it's clearer in them where she stands on Peta and Gayle and why. She knows they both have feelings for her. But her whole life is pretty much keeping her sister alive and surviving herself. She really has no interest or desire for any kind of romance and is pretty awkward with it all. She does value them both as friends and fellow people from her district though. You get a hint here and there that she might have a slight spark for Peta, but doesn't even really know what it means.
I think she doesn’t think Peeta actually had feelings for her at first, she thinks he’s just doing it for the games
I cannot wait to see what the next 3 movies do to you! If you thought this movie was stressful… lol
In the book not only did Peeta give her the bread, but her and her family were on the edge of starvation that night and that bread gave them the meal that gave her hope to carry on 🌼 great reaction, you really dug the meaning and understood the character ❤️
Also he burned it deliberately to make sure he'd have to throw it out SO he could give it to her, AND got beaten by his mother for it (his mother was pretty much an abusive piece of work). The only real hint we get about her in the movie is his line about her saying district 12 might finally have a winner, but she wasn't talking about him.
@@margisama so wait if he burnt it knowing he was gonna have to take a lickin for it just to give it to her why didnt he just not burn it and give it to her anyhow. Sounds like he got the same punishment either way so why even burn it?
@@GJBedrin His mother wouldn't have let him give the bread to her. So he burnt it on purpose so she'd tell him to toss it to the pigs. And he took the opportunity to toss it for Katniss to get it.
@@samsungstarist I get that, I just mean if you was already getting in trouble why not just go all the way and take some good bread go outside and give it to her. But I guess he probably had more chances of getting away with it without anyone noticing with the burnt bread method
@@GJBedrin Yeah, I think it's what his 11 year old self thought would be the best way to do it. It was pretty smart of him. Peeta is quite the bright and intelligent character.
The author of the books Suzanne Collins said she and her husband were watching a TV and they sumbled on some reality tv show and when they switched the channel it was war footage and thats how she became inspired for the hunger games, which make sense cause you can get food from the capitol for the exchange of putting your name more times, same when poor people join the army so that the goverment gives them benefits... Books are much much darker and deeper. Like peeta lost his leg after the games and the mutts werent the dogs but were actually made out of body parts of the fallen tributes.
Ps: its Peeta not Peter 😂. Also Gale and Katniss were just friends they never even kissed before so...
okay i was rewatching the movie the other day and wondered why nothing was mentioned abt the dogs being the other tributes. i thought it was some sort of mandela effect. i didn’t realize the book and movie was different
@@ryleawilliams391 yeah hahah they marketed movies mainy for teenagers so i guess they had to change it a bit
this series is underrated, the second one is one of my favorite movie, the books are even better
yes, the books are amazing!
We all broke down with rue! Those Mutts at the end in the books were called Mutations and had the eyes of the dead kids! Creepy. Yes to filming the rest in the hideout
You were saying that they should get something for winning. Well they do…they are given money from the capital for the rest of their life and they are given a special status in their district and now live with their family in the wealthiest part which is called Victors Village.
The name of the guy that came with Rue from district 11 is Thresh
Thresh was the MVP of the 74th Hunger Games. No Thresh, then Clove kills Katniss and Peeta has no chance vs Cato and Clove.
“He did look out with the bread”
“But he just threw it into dirt and the water but I mean shiiiit” lmao 😂 that made me laugh 38:39
The books tell and reveal SO MUCH more that the movies don’t. Like for example the main theme of the story is hunger. Hence the name. In many of the pages, what Katniss is always thinking about, is food. In her first meeting with Cinna, there’s a scene where she’s thinking about how she would put the plate of rich food together if she were at home, stating the differences what would be plausible and what wouldn’t be, showing us, the reader the differences life is like for district 12 citizens like her and the citizens in the Capitol and richer districts where a plate of hot fresh food is available at the push of a button.
Wish more elements were included somehow. But after you watch these, I definitely recommended reading it. My husband is also reading it, and he loves the extra details that were left out. Can’t wait for the rest of the reactions! :)
And also the amount of time in the games is WAYYYY longer than could be possibly portrayed in the movies. Her and Rue were together for a long time before she died and in the movie it just seemed like overnight. Way bigger loss in the books because of that bond over time.
@@briandhinton not to mention I was sad that we didn’t get to see Katniss receive bread from Rue’s district. What’s interesting, my husband pointed this out to me; Katniss received that bread just after Rue died. I assumed they collected money and it was always meant for Katniss. But my husband thinks district 11 already had saved up and bought the bread for Rue, but she died before they could send it. And when they saw what Katniss did for her; they sent it to her as thanks. I didn’t think of that, and I don’t remember if it’s officially clarified that way, but I think his idea is way more plausible. :)
Lol great reaction 🤣 loved hearing you call Peta, Peter and Pete the whole movie 😆
You turned on him quick. "He don't really like her he trying to get that dub"
My favorite part "Damn she got Tracker Jacked" 😆 🤣 😂
Don’t let the Harry Potter book lengths scare you! They look long because the books are thick, but they have giant margins and huge line spacing
Not only that but usually after the first chapter or 2 and maybe 1or 2 more midway through the books are also pretty much suck you in and the pace stays throughout
Because no reaction channel can watch Hunger Games without being told they should watch Maze Runner, don't expect them to be remotely close to the quality of *Hunger Games*
I usually laugh internally while watching movies or TV shows, but when you jumped at the "pitbull, bobcat, jaguar, mountain lion" I was full on, out loud, belly laughing and had to rewind and watch your reaction 2 more times! 🤣🤣
The place that they were visiting is the capital. The closer you are to the capital, the more resources, training, and over all money you have. So district one is well off, district 12 is the farthest so they are the poorest. But there was a district 13 that president snow destroyed. Also is name is peeta not Peter. And peeta didn’t betray her, he wanted to be inside the inner circle to protect her and himself. And he didn’t get her a sponser. Hamitch (idk how to spell his name) sent it because while all of this is happening, he’s watching on the tv along with all the other districts.
So this is in no way a spoiler to the movies, but to the books, the only way that someone can get out of the hunger games really, is, do you have a family member volunteer like Katniss did with prim, Peeta has older brothers that were still eligible for the games, but did not volunteer for him.
I love commenting this but fun fact about the mockingjay: The capitol breeded a bird called the jabber Jay to spy and record conversations from all of the districts. The people found out and started to spread lies to the capitol. The capitol let all of the jabber Jay's out to the wild expecting they would die. But the didnt. They breeded with mocking birds creating the "Mockingjay" they mimic sound like the songs with Rue. It's symbolic because its something the capitol didn't mean to create. Its a slap in the face to them. A rebellion..... please react to the others!
Damn Jessica thank you for dropping this gem keep them coming I cant wait to read the books. And I finished the series already its up on Patreon it will be up on YT soon
I did not have "Boyz In Da Hood reference during a Hunger Games reaction" on my 2022 Bingo card, but I respect it!
Gonna say it again just as I did for my own reaction…
Rip Rue 🤍🤍🤍 the goat 🐐
So the next movie- Catching Fire is my fav of them all. The story really picks up, the costumes and effects are at their best and things are insanely good. Can’t wait for movie 2! Love that you love all we pick out for you. You’re my favorite reactor the one I get on YT to see. Keep um coming buddy!
Catching fire is def the best 🔥🔥
The reward for winning the Hunger Games is safety from not being put into the reaping again. You get money and a new home, so you're right about the outcome of the win.
I’m letting you now once you enter into the world of hunger gamer series you never want to leave it! These movies are addicting as heck. You are in for a crazy ride. New sub
The three finger salute has a significant meaning in District 12. It means, "Thank you for your time" like a farewell salute. Also, that's the one thing I'll never forgive the movies for... they made her seem so confused on which boy she should pick... but it wasn't that way at all. She was just trying to survive, she wasn't thinking about boyfriends at all.
I listened to them on audiobook, when Rue died, I cried so hard, and then the narrator had so much emotion, I called my best friend (who hadn’t warned me), at 2 am to chew her out. Lol
So major the movies really don’t explain it all that well, but typically districts, 1, 2 and 4 are really the Favorites of the capital.
the books tells more!
- The 3 finger salute is a sign of respect and they did that for Katniss because she often got food for some of the more poorer people through her hunting. she was one of the only ones who knew how to hunt (citizens in districts wielding weapons are forbidden and seen as dangerous and rebellious) and she went past the gate to the forest to get food (trespassing)
Peeta! His name is Peeta! LOL Not Peter...OK, end of rant 😂 So glad you're reacting to these, love these movies
I heard you mention the name Ragnar and I saw that you watched Vikings. I'm not sure whether it has been mentioned or not but I think you would enjoy the last kingdom.
The story goes that the Hunger Games author, Suzanne Collins was one day was channel surfing and was switching back and forth between the war in Iraq and an intense competitive reality TV show. She had been so tired that day that after a while the images began to blur in her mind to a point where she couldn't tell the difference anymore between the war and the reality TV program. Rumor has it that the reality TV show she was watching was Survivor Cook Island. The very show my brother Billy Garcia was a contestant on back in 2006. On Survivor it is the norm for contestants to compete for rewards that most of the time includes food being that through out the entire show they have to fend for themselves and go hungry the majority of the time when not competing. It was from that experience of watching the show and the war that the author, Suzanne Collins drew the inspiration and idea for The Hunger Games novels.
That is the legend Lenny Kravits and cat women in Batman was his daughter (if you didn’t know)
Amandla Stenberg who played Rue has been in several movies since. She was Starr Carter in The Hate U Give.
The Capital isn’t a District. There were 13 Districts but 13 was destroyed by the Capital. So the 12 remaining Districts are heavily controlled and support the Capital’s lavish lifestyle. Some of the Districts are more favored by the Capital (like 1 and 2) while others live in squalor (like 11 and 12).
Also, once you’re a victor, you are at the mercy of the Capital.
my favourite part abut the hunger games is the irony of "May the odds be ever in your favour" because we're shown throughout this whole movie how unfair the games can be i.e, the game makers manipulating the games with fire/rules/dogs or how in order for poor districts to sustain their lives and families they can offer up more times their entered into a reaping in return for oil and grain. Gale had his name in 42 times during the reaping. But my ALL TIME favourite moment is when we see Cato come to the realization that for his whole life, he thought the games were his to win. He trained, he volunteered, he was likeable, THE ODDS WERE ALWAYS IN HIS FAVOUR. unfortunately he found out the hard way that when in the arena his odds were equal to everyone else because the game makers saw him as any other tribute. He was manipulated to think his life matter when in reality, the odds were never in his favour. I could watch a whole movie just from Cato's POV. His story is so sad. Great Reaction!
10:40 that’s the capital where all the rich upper class people live. District 1-12 are consider the low class people. you were kinda right tho district 1 and 2 are considered to be “the wealthiest” out of the 12 and 12 being the poorest.
These are what the districts are known for and why the capital depends on them so much it helps to know for the other movies!
District 1: Luxury goods
Ex. Their goods are used to decorate the capital
District 2: Masonary
District 3: Technology
District 4: Fishing
District 5: Power generation
District 6: Transportation manufacturing
District 7: Lumber
District 8: Textiles
District 9: Grain
District 10: Livestock
District 11: Agricultural
District 12: Coal mining
Better flowers??? For Christ sake Kat spent the time out in the open when someone from that clan could’ve come upon her and killed her! Katniss risked her life to give Rue as proper a send off as possible! And you take off your headphones and don’t hear their interaction at the end if Rues life! Once more Better Flowers??? LMAO!
Pretty sure he said Bed of Flowers
They do get rewarded for their survival of the games, but I’ll let you see when you see the second film. I REALLY loved your reaction as usual! It’s great to see it thru the eyes of someone else for the first time. See you on the next one!
An interesting theory about the guy who first threw whatever it was at the scales, is that that was someone in Rue’s family.
I thought for sure it was a family member, maybe even her dad.
@@dressmup1 it was never said in the books or movie.
One of my all-time favorite movie and book series'. 😊
So excited that you're diving into this movie series. This first movie is one of my favorite ones.
Looking forward to your next reaction. 😊
The Black dude from 11 is named Thresh. I don't think they ever say it in the movie. But we heart Thresh. He was off living on his own, like Katniss. He wasn't fighting other tributes unless they came at him (which Cato does towards the end, we don't know exactly what happened but he injures Cato before the dogs attack). He must've felt bad that he hadn't helped Rue once the two victors possibility was announced.
Rue was the cutest. I love her. Some people complained about the casting when the actress (Amandla Stenberg) was announced--because in the books Katniss says Rue reminds her of her sister and dumb readers thought that meant she had to be white. I think they are crazy. She is perfect. So adorbs she started a revolution.
I genuinely believe this is the best book to movie adapted series ever made. Including Harry Potter and LOTR
You talked about how this is like the battle royale games. This is like the second iteration of this idea, there was an OG version of the hunger games before this where Suzanne Collins got the idea.
Anyway, after this movie, Minecraft made a game mode called hunger games that was essentially the first battle royale type game. From there, other games started using the formula and eventually we got games like Warzone, Apex, Fortnite, etc.
So yeah, you’re absolutely right about it being like “those games,” you’re watching the start of the extreme popularization of the battle royale genre!
Yay! My favorite series! Looking forward to the next 3!
I really loved this movie series, second one is my fav. That cat and dog joke at the start took me out!!! Can’t wait to see your reaction to the rest of the series #JusticeForRue
peeta couldn't hand her the bread because his mother wanted it to go to the pigs rather than to starving to death katniss, so he had to throw it when she wasn't looking.
This is such an amazing series, one of the best out there, and a profound exercise in empathy, compassion and understanding for the audience. It is very much a story about trauma, both for the individual and a larger society, choosing compassion in the face of fear and tyranny, when the entire system set up around you forces you against this and encourages only fear, division and brutality,
and helps us to understand the inner workings and tricks of tyrannical regimes, control and propaganda.
Just for context to help better understand the relationship dynamics going forward, Katniss has never had any interest in any kind of romantic relationship; she has always been solely focused on the survival of herself and her family, and in her own mind, has little time or room for anything else. Gale is the only other person in district 12 that she is ‘close’ to, other than her mother and sister, but that relationship is purely platonic, and also heavily based on survival, as they hunt for food to provide for both of their families and just decided that sticking together would be the better option, as they made a good team.
Gale does have romantic feelings for Katniss, but he has never really outwardly expressed it to her, and while she is vaguely aware that his feelings may go a little beyond friendship, she ignores it and kind of tries to say as far away from that subject as possible, as she doesn’t feel the same way but values him as a friend and partner, and is extremely awkward and uncomfortable with romance altogether. She does not really understand it and has never made room for it in her life, as she is so stuck in constant survival mode and is already dealing with trauma from her life in District 12, even before the horror of the Games.
And you were right, Katniss has started developing real feelings for Peeta during the Games, but she doesn’t really recognise it, or understand what it is that she is feeling, as she has never experienced it before and has blocked herself off from it so much.
Hopefully this will help with watching the rest of the series. The books are definitely worth a read, they are captivating, and everything is explored in so much more depth. xxx
In the games there's no villain or a hero. We only count for catniss because we see her pov. But at the end of the day everyone is just trying to survive, whatever it takes. We can't blame anyone because they didn't choose to be there.
Man I’m excited on your behalf Major you’re going to love it 🫶🏽

And Bjorn a bad mothafluffer, for real. Vikings is MY JAM. Was wondering if you seen it or not. I shoulda known you love them historical shits maaaan.
Love the update Major. Glad to see things settled. Hope you and the lady and the lil man had a lovely Christmas.
So major, there is said to be a prequel to the hunger games movies in the works.
Hyped about this! I wouldve chosen hunger games as well lol but I hope to see you do pirates of the carribean after this series those movies are awesome as well
Only rue dying would make me get goosebumps on a 90 degree day.
That part. Oh my goodness. Reading about it was just as hard ten years ago..
Watching it is event worse.
Great reaction dude, this is a cool series make sure you check out the rest of them.
I know you have lots of wonderful books on your to do list, but I highly recommend reading this trilogy! They are a bit darker, however they were pretty faithfully adapted to the screen.
Panem is America. It was divided up into 13 Districts. District 13 felt that they should have been in power instead of the Capitol so they riled all the Districts up. People rebelled against those in power (the government) because there was over population & starvation. The wealthy had everything while the poor had nothing. Anyway, after the Great Rebellion, as a way to keep the districts in line they had to offer up their children for the Hunger Games. Because District 13 headed the rebellion, they were boomed out of existence. Each District provides something to the Capitol. The closer your District is to the Capitol the better off u r. The Capitol itself is nestled in the Rocky Mountains of... I believe, Colorado. Katniss & Peeta's District 12 is like Virginia, Tennessee, or anywhere around that area where they do coalmining. They r the poorest District. Rue & the big black guy that helped Katniss, named Thrash are from District 11, the agricultural district. They have a lot of those TrackerJacker Wasps in Rue's District. That's how she knew what to use to treat the stings.
Ok, about Haymitch. He was badly traumatized by his Hunger Games because his was in the 50th Annual Hunger Games. Every 25 years the Capitol holds a special Hunger Games. Haymitch's year, they doubled the amount of contestants. So, 47 kids had to die that year for Haymitch to come out on top. When it came time to being a mentor, he refused. He did not want to send any more children to their death. That was when they murdered everyone he cared about. He drank to dull his pain & trauma.
Effie, the chick w/the way out outfits, is District 12's Capitol Rep. That is why she is so over the top.
Now, about that Love Triangle. It's evident that Peeta has feelings for Katniss, as does Gale, but Katniss is unsure about her feelings for either one. I mean, she's 16 years old trying to keep her family safe & survive. Gale is 18 years old going to his last Reaping for the Hunger Games, her best friend & hunting partner. He definitely has feelings for her & drops hints that he likes her more than friends. Peeta is I believe the same age as her, & has always had a crush on her. Katniss' dad died in a mine explosion. Her mom got really depressed & couldn't take care of Katniss & Primrose "Prim" for like 6mos, so it was up to Katniss to provide. That rainy day, Peeta had gone outside to feed the pigs when he spotted Katniss leaning on a tree almost fainting from starvation. His mom came out to see what was taking so long. She saw Katniss telling her to go away because there was nothing for her. Peeta purposely burned the bread & got beat by his momma for it. She told him to toss the burnt bread to the pigs, but he tossed it to Katniss, & hurried back inside so his mom wouldn't see what he had done. Without that kindness, her & her family probably would have starved to death. Katniss does have some feelings for Peeta, but she just keeps telling herself it's all for the audience & the sponsors. Most of this info is from the books. As u can see, the books are a lot more in-depth.
Anyway, I have commented long enough. I enjoyed your reaction. I will definitely follow along w/u for the rest.
great details, thank you!
The next one in the series is my favorite, you'll love it. They do get to move into the Victor's Square, giant houses for the people who have won from their district, they get extra money and extra food for the rest of their lives. And they are safe from being picked for the regular hunger games from now on.
I love your enthusiasm, and really hope you put Tropic Thunder in soon!
So glad you're reacting to this movie
Katniss is my favorite movie character. So brave and courageous but also frightened and human. i love her
I can definitely relate to your talk about not being proud of coming from a more lower class background. It sure does keep me humble and grateful though, I can't complain about that.
You can't be talking about no grilled cheese while I'm high. So hungry now. 😊
I already know you’re gonna be pissed about rue. It’s so sad 😢
I've watched the hunger games series at least 5 times (at least the first 2) and I can't wait for you to watch the rest. I enjoy watching others watch this for the first time so I don't feel weird that this many times later I'm still fascinated and horrified by the world these books created. It's a tough watch and yet I love every minute of it.
Actually part 2 is in the jungle 😅
So excited to see u react to it
Happy you enjoyed it.
Some people say way too much in these comments damn let him watch it.
i bawl my eyes out everytime i watch rues death its so heart renching,
also fun little fact the author was inspired to write the story when one day she was flipping thru the channels on tv and went from the olympics to a documentary on a horrific dictatorship regime and she was like hmm what if a tht dictatorship was able to have televized gladiator style battles to the death and no one was around to stop them.
Major: "I ain't gonna say it, looks like someone won a war and took over"
The Gays: 👀
Glad you're watching these. I saw your soul leave your body there for a second. I'll always be grateful to the librarian who recommended these books to me. The movies do them justice.
Idk wat ur next movie series will be but I heard u mention pirates of the Caribbean and u would absolutely LOVE those movies they are the definition of brilliant
